‘World of Dreams’ By Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema 1876 {{PD}}

Though an eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs during a relatively long period of time (minutes or hours), for astrological purposes we’ll look at the moment when the degrees and minutes for the opposition between the Sun and Moon become exact: 7:34 PM PDT of the 17th, with maximum eclipse effect occurring at 7:44 PM PDT (see more details on timing here). Here in Seattle the event actually begins while the Moon is still below the horizon, so unobservable, with the penumbral period starting at 5:41 PM.

A Lunar eclipse is a Full Moon; what makes it an eclipse is the alignment of Sun, Moon, and Earth, with Earth between the Sun and the Moon, so that what we’re seeing during a Lunar eclipse is the shadow of the Earth blocking the Sun’s light from reflecting off the Moon. If we were observing this from the Moon, we would see the Earth come between our vantage point and the Sun, throwing us into at least partial darkness (depending on how precise the alignment, which determines whether the eclipse is partial or complete). Fun fact: the Moon is moving away from the Earth, at the rate of roughly one inch per year. How do we know? We put mirrors on the Moon, then over time shoot lasers at them and measure how long it takes the light to bounce back to us.

The Lunar eclipse of September 17th occurs at 7:34 PM PDT at 25 Pisces 40, with the Moon just short of conjoining Neptune and sextiling Uranus and (barely) sextiling a 29 degree Pluto in Capricorn (though a big orb for an event sextile, Pluto’s stressed status suggests it will be felt, one way or another). Add to this Jupiter forms a wide T-square with the eclipse axis, while Venus will soon perfect a quincunx to the Moon that is already within orb. Eclipses are events where previous energies are wiped out, replaced with a rearrangement of energies based on the eclipse picture; in this case we see the full potentials of both idealism and delusion as they might play out fully formed (FM in Pisces). This suggests that however we imagined things to be before, whatever we believed would be an ideal outcome, whatever delusions we continued to support, knowing full well they were delusions, these will all be undeniable and we’ll have to acknowledge their implications–and in so doing we see a new set of ideals, new dreams, take shape before us, along with new potentials for being misled, for following what we imagine is there, not what really is there.

This reformation of ideals, dreams, and delusions is potent (conj Neptune); we’re unlikely to have a totally conscious handle on what’s happening, and we’re unlikely to see the full picture, whatever that is. This is where the Lunar intuition, a sense of knowing that springs entirely from the unconscious perceptions and the feelings they incite, should be employed; to rely on the mind is to ask to misunderstand and misinterpret. Proceed knowing that at least some of what presents itself is inherently deceptive, that we may be in a fog, unsure, confused, or, let’s hope, inspired. A good way to handle uncertainty at this time is to exorcise it through creative effort led by feeling–I’ll rephrase that: a good way to handle everything at this time is by allowing what we feel to inform the impulse to create–and then to follow through on that, not aiming for a finished product, but rather to giving what we can’t bring to conscious awareness a representation that can show us something about who we are, or what direction we need to take.

Expect the unexpected, the original, the unusual, and maybe a little chaos (sxt Uranus) and the potential for real change to the landscape that, up to now, surrounded us (sxt Pluto). There will definitely be a sense that either destruction is imminent, or that if we institute change, we will cause destruction. Neither is necessarily valid; if we want to harness Plutonian energies, we need to think of them as transformative, and accept that anything that is destroyed or falls away in the process needed to go, anyway. Balancing our feelings with the facts (Jupiter sq) will go a long way toward offering stability, as will being willing to modify our choices in order to respect those people and things we love (Venus qnx)–a simple but effective yardstick for measuring the appropriateness of our choices.

There are two asteroid contacts of note, with Karma and Pandora conjoined in Cancer and trine the eclipse. These suggest myriad possibilities–in fact, a Pandora’s box of them–released with the eclipse. I think it’s reassuring (or damning, depending on your own past operations) that what occurs is karmic–that is, earned or deserved. That could bring possibilities, good, bad, or otherwise, that up til now only lived in your imagination (Neptune, Pisces)–but those possibilities can be ideal, and hold the potential to make dreams come true. Someone once said that a good way to know if you’re living up to your own ideals of behavior and beingness is to thing about “getting what you deserve”. If that phrase is appealing, you’ve definitely been doing your best; if not, it’s a signal that you’ve either strayed from your own ethics and standards, or mistreated others, or both, and need to get right with your Soul. No matter what, Pandora’s box contained hope, the absolutely, rock-bottom, vital ingredient for going on, and for each of us personally going in a positive direction.

‘Pandora’ By Odilon Redon c1914 {{PD}}

The eclipse Sabian is, ‘Watching The Very Thin Moon Crescent Appearing At Sunset, Different People Realize That The Time Has Come To Go Ahead With Their Different Projects’. A slender crescent Moon is a very new Moon, symbolizing the new starts we typically associate with this Lunar phase; in this case, though, it’s a symbol of the new creative landscape and outlook we’re likely to develop during the eclipse. At sunset suggests, possibly, that the project we see as ready to go forward has already received sufficient scrutiny and effort (the day that’s now done). It’s a point of realization, offering a significant step forward, if we’ll only take it. The Sabian for the light-giving Sun is, ‘A Boy With A Censer Serves The Priest Near The Altar’. The project of the Lunar symbol is, in some important way, a form of service that fits us perfectly. This may be an odd interpretation of the symbol, but here goes: we’ll know whether we’re going in the right direction, taking the right steps, if it ‘smells’ right (the intense odor of the incense burning in the censer). Intuition, then, is key–good thing we’ve got a Lunar eclipse to pump up the intuitive volume.

Starting tomorrow, the 10th, I’ll be unavailable until Sunday the 15th. All comments will be answered and orders will be filled then. Thank you, and have a wonderful week!

Full Moon 30 August 2023: A Period of Adjustment

‘Morning Fog’ By Jasper Francis Cropsey 1854-55 {{PD}}

The Full Moon perfects at 6:35 PM PDT of the 30th at 7 Pisces 25, and it makes only a handful of aspects: a quincunx to Juno in Leo, a sesquiquadrate to Zeus-Ceres in Libra, and a novile to Pluto in Capricorn. That’s a goodly amount of Cardinal energy working on a Watery, nebulous Lunar energy infused with a fiery bit of egoism–and all of it through the more subtle mechanisms of less pronounced aspect relationships. That makes the events surrounding the lunation emotion-heavy and personally focused to a greater degree than usual.

A Full Moon brings to culmination some matter either related to the sign in which it occurs, or to the matters of the natal House where it falls, with specifics added by any close aspects it makes to natal placements. That specificity is why a general overview only goes so far (and, I think, contributes to the idea, fed by those familiar only with Sun sign horoscopes, that astrology is superstition, rather than what it really is, a language–one we’ve barely begun to decipher–through which the Universe itself communicates).

The Full Moon in Pisces promises endings related to illusions, delusions, dreams, ideals, or a creative effort (and the fact that it’s the second Full Moon of the month, termed a Blue Moon, really doesn’t matter–the movements of the planets–to include the tilt and orbit of the Earth around the Sun–are Nature’s calendar, not a man-named month). As we know, endings don’t arrive solo–they always contain the seeds of the next thing (or at least, they make space for it, with surrounding energies poised to fill that vacuum we hear so much about Nature abhorring).

The quincunx to Juno gives us our theme: personal empowerment. Something about what occurs shows us how we must adjust (the quincunx) to keep or enhance our ability to direct our own life and make our own choices. It’s fueled by Fire (Juno in Leo), probably making us feel we must do something, even though the matter is perceived through the emotions and intuition in a direct pipeline from the Universe (Moon in Pisces), and so may demand we process it thoroughly, as much as it calls for action. Feeling strongly the impetus behind the Creative (Pisces) may only add to our sense that we need to actively address matters, with the sesquiquadrate to the pairing of Zeus-Ceres in Libra entangles events and the issues they stir with ambitions and level of personal authority we enjoy in relationships–where we see those need adjustment, too (the sesquiquadrate).

Think of what happens around this Moon as a fact-finding opportunity where we are quite naturally able to interpret creative and effective solutions or approaches; then the challenge becomes having the courage to make permanent, irrevocable transformation or change, or to eliminate something that has outlived its time in our sphere (aspect to Pluto). We should be assured that our ideas of how to respond with power and grace are inspired ones (the novile). That means there’s nothing to be afraid of–and that if we don’t make the needed changes, Pluto will reach out and start trimming and shaping without our consent.

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘A Girl Blowing A Bugle’. So this is a call to action, mustering our creativity in service to our ideals and imagination. The Sabian for the Sun, giver of light, is, ‘A Five-Year-Old Child Takes A First Dancing Lesson’. This image suggests we may feel we’re beginning at the beginning, likely in terms of what fills the void left by what the Full Moon ends or eliminates; that can be frustrating and even discouraging, but only if we are judging ourselves with a big ‘should’ that says we must be further along, further developed, on this particular path. That’s an attitude that will drain us and is guaranteed to stop progress. I suggest we abandon our ‘shoulds’ and our ideas around where we must be in life according to our judgments about age and skill, and instead embrace this new thing as a child would: seeing it as a new world to explore, a place of opportunity, and for the older among us, a reminder that ageless living (that is, living life without constant reference to one’s biological age, and all the shoulds that accompany that) really is the ideal.

Some of you may question why I’ve not included the wide conjunction to Saturn that the Full Moon makes–in my opinion, it’s too far past to ‘speak’ within the Lunar picture. It does suggest a situation that restricts one’s freedom, license, or creativity, or some sort of restriction or denial, leads up to the Full Moon event, probably making us aware of a way in which we’re not being fulfilled, with the FM bringing home emotional impact of this, and then making clear what must change in order to move closer to our desires, or to achieving our ambitions (sesquiquadrate to Zeus). The potential novile to Chiron is also a bit too wide–suggesting that hurt feelings aren’t necessary, so if you see any displayed, they may be more of an indulgence or attempt to manipulate.

Special note for those with placements between 6 and 9 Libra: that adds this natal energy as base, with Juno in Leo, to a Finger of God with the Full Moon as apex. This suggests your empowerment quandary will precede the Full Moon, that the Full Moon will bring an emotional result that illuminates the ways in which the expression of that natal energy is or isn’t calling its own shots. This is likely to impact your identity and your relationships (Leo, Libra)–so proceed with that in mind.

Have a wonderful Full Moon!

Just come back to the world, and what do I find? I slept through a Full Moon! But I saw it forming each night, clear and luminous, and was anxious to find out what it might bring; this is what I see:

At 2:59 AM PDT of the 10th the Moon conjoined Earth in Pisces, opposed the Virgo Sun, with the Moon just hours before this contacting Juno, and both Moon and Earth poised to conjoin Neptune, the Moon in hours, the Earth in about a week. What culminates at this point is a material matter that reflects a spiritual one, which impacts identity and creates the emotional landscape with which we’ll engage over the next two weeks. It’s as if in the hours around the Full Moon we think we know what defines us, what empowers us, what we control or have authority over, and then the Moon and Earth meet and we’re given a vision, or perhaps presented with a physical scenario, that reflects back to us a spiritual Truth, one that has a very personal message for us about how to go forward.

Here’s where I have to stop and say that I might have given this Lunar event a somewhat different interpretation, if not for my own experience last night. It was a warm night, that kind of late summer warm where you’re still feeling the heat of the day in the air and coming off the pavement, and yet there’s a breeze off the water that once in a while gives you a chill, warns you that things are changing. I was in a car and came to a stop light. I felt compelled to turn and look at the driver in the car to the right, where he sat under a very bright streetlight, and got a shock: this man looked exactly like someone close to me who has been dead for years. Not just that, but he looked young, much younger than this person was when he died, and even stranger, he had a small smile and a confused expression, and he was looking right at me.

So my experience of the message was in the form of an (unsettling) vision, one that has personal meaning for me, associations made to this person and his example, and which I must decipher for myself–and you will have had a similar event, or will have undergone some revelation, some realization through a dream, some imagining that reveals something new about yourself to yourself–or maybe it came through criticism (that Virgo Sun), or through a kind of accounting, accountability, or harvest, one that told you exactly what the combination of your creative energies and your material ones have brought into being.

The Full Moon also makes a sextile to Uranus, implying a suddenness to what comes, a shock or surprise, or a chaotic note that allows a vision or message to emerge from a maelstrom of activity or information. The group as a whole may deliver your Full Moon conclusion, possibly bringing to a stop something you still carried hope for–Luna is the purest conduit of hope–or delivering it in material form, perhaps an unanticipated material form.

There are also two configurations: a Grand Water Trine, with Moon-Earth-Juno, Black Moon Lilith in Cancer, and South Node widely conjoined Hygeia in Scorpio. A Grand Trine is an invitation for energies to work together through their emotional commonality; here we see material matters around empowerment about which we have strong feelings ‘getting along with’ those matters we are in denial about, ignoring, or about which we are angry, and with what was and wasn’t healthy about the past that is affecting the present. Again, a very personal picture, one that may suggest dealing with issues that bring strong emotional reactions is inevitable.

The second configuration is a loose Mystic Rectangle involving the Moon-Earth-Juno sextile North Node-Uranus trine the Sun sextile South Node-Hygeia and back around by trine to the Moon. This brings together elements of Earth and Water, the past and the present, the material world and the intangible (feeling, spiritual, Soul) one, and asks us to find ways in which the factors and memories coming forward now can empower us materially while making for a healthy Beingness, an approach to ourselves and our place in the world that is positive, benefiting from what came before, and what we can learn through Higher Mind (Uranus) lens to shape the future.

The event should conclude in about a week with Earth conjoined/ Sun opposed Neptune, delivering the ‘Full Vision’ (or for some, the ‘Complete Delusion’) that will power us forward, and which may give us not just a particular spiritual awareness around the Soul identity, it may also prompt a kind of costuming, in the sense of showing openly the roles we are now playing through appearance and behaviors, making apparent the identities we are embracing and offering to the world.

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘In A Gigantic Tent, Villagers Witness A Spectacular Performance’. Maybe what prompts your vision, what’s revealed, is a ‘Big Tent’ experience, one many people undergo at once–but that doesn’t mean it isn’t extremely personal, since our interpretation of and reaction to what happens is what gives it meaning for us. Or it may simply be that our gigantic tent is the human experience itself, with each of us witnessing some pretty spectacular things–and this may be one of them. Or we focus on the word ‘performance’, and note that this may involve interaction, actually witnessing another ‘putting on a show’–and again, the meaning of that will be decipherable only to you through your own experiences, past and emotional.

The Sun Sabian is at ‘An Ouija Board’, reinforcing the idea of information or messages that pass from the unseen to either realization or into the actual surroundings themselves–and so pointing to the importance of the message, no matter the medium that delivers it.

Mercury is also retrograde at this point, turning around in Libra, an Air sign, and so asking us to re-think, re-consider, especially in terms of aesthetic choices, partnerships, romances, and oddly enough, maybe asking us, through Venus’ territory of envy and jealousy, to re-examine why we might be envious or jealous–and perhaps rid ourselves of a tiresome and irritating feeling, should we find out we’d rather keep our own situation, problems and all, rather than take on one that only seems in a surface way to be better than ours.

The first major contact Merc will form in apparent retro motion is an opposition to Jupiter in Aries, which centers on the individual within the social order, and the way partnerships or collaborations make the whole thing tick. A riff, then, on the Lunar theme for this Full Moon, on identity and how that brings us to where we are in life.

I hope you all had a wonderful Full Moon, and of course, all the usual caveats with Merc retro: don’t sign, don’t buy, don’t agree–with the exception that if the deal was fully in place and already explored before the retro, you can go ahead. Just remember that if you do implement something during the retrograde, you do so knowing that there’s something you don’t yet know about the situation–which could mean regret or disadvantage, when you finally find out.

Detail of the hand of Oopjen Coppit with Cuffs and pearl bracelet, By Rembrandt 1634 {{PD}}

The Full Moon perfects at 4:54 PM PDT on the 20th at 28 Pisces 13, sextile a 29 degree Sedna and forming the base to a Finger of God with apex Vesta at 00 Scorpio. What happens when feelings reach a zenith (FM), in fact overflow with no boundaries, and spring from the (overactive) imagination (Pisces)? And then reach accord (the sextile) with either those things we ‘know but don’t know’, or our ‘blind spot’ material (Sedna)? In this case, they give us a fresh (00 degrees) deep dive (Scorpio) into our core values and commitments (Vesta). The emotional impact of Full Moon realization is a brand-new take on what we care about most. What have you been dedicating your life (especially your emotional energy) to, and how, after this Lunar experience, will what you honor, find sacred, and commit your energy to, change?

The Full Moon in Pisces promises to make us aware of an ideal or dream we have been assembling, reaching for, or planning for (albeit probably below the conscious level) that is informed by things that are either a deep part of us (instinctive) or that we have absorbed without knowing we have, and these will require a new take on what we regard most highly in life. Look to the House in the natal chart that holds Scorpio to know around what subjects our ideals have, are, or will be changing, and consider that these changes are meant to be toward a dream or ideal form.

The Full Moon is also widely opposed Mars and semi-square Uranus, suggesting that matters of personal Will, ego, identity, or choice may factor in, and that surprises or sudden revelations, especially through accidents or the serendipitous, could be part of the Lunar event. You may ask, is the Full Moon conjoined Neptune? Sextile Pluto? What about quincunx Mercury? No, no, and no–remember, precision in drawing the event picture is necessary to drawing accurate conclusions that reflect the actual Full Moon and what it brings.

In the non-Lunar things I want to note category is the almost perfected at the time of the Full Moon (only one minute past!) trine of Mercury to Jupiter in their respective Air signs. This implies an atmosphere of easily exaggerated thoughts and communications, a tendency to ‘live in our heads’, to over promise, or to believe something we’ve thought, but don’t actually know. The Preacher, The Trickster, The Zealot, and The Persuader will all be overly potent at this time, making those who vibe to these Archetypes unusually influential–and not in a good way.

Then we have the way that, through Mercury, this ties in to a T-square with Mercury opposed Eris, with the arm Pluto. Communication might just naturally open the way for discord; if there are any destructive intents behind words, thoughts, agreements, or random comments, they will fly out like the ills of the world from Pandora’s box–and speaking of minor planet/asteroid Pandora (at 16 Libra 14, and not shown on the chart below), it’s currently forming, with Juno, the base to a Finger of God with apex Uranus. That sounds to me like being too strident about our position, status, or what we believe is owed to us, or vengeful for perceived wrongs (recall Juno had a difficult time feeling disrespected) can combine with poor choice (Pandora) to lead to sudden and quite unintended or out of control consequences. So take care, as all of this creates the atmosphere in which the Full Moon changes and revelations will occur.

One more thing: there’s also a loose Grand Trine of Mars/ Saturn/ North Node-Black Moon Lilith. This suggests taking action right now might inadvertently lead to stasis, perhaps promoting rage or forcing us to deny or ignore things that will turn out to be life direction shaping. Could this aspect also offer security, a solid footing from which to take action? Probably not, as even if things look steady they would be based on what we’re either angry about or in denial of–and that’s not a healthy recipe.

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘Light Breaking Into Many Colors As It Passes Through A Prism’. The image suggests we’ll have an experience that allows us to separate into individual parts of the spectrum what lights (enlightens, illuminates–that is, makes life worth living, translating to those Vestal things we’re dedicated to) up our world–and so we’ll understand better which hues we want to enhance, which we want to move away from. The Sun, provider of light and symbol of ourselves/ the Soul in the individual chart, sits at this Sabian: ‘A Seeker After Occult Knowledge Is Reading An Ancient Scroll Which Illumines His Mind’. It’s in taking a posture of seeking, openness of mind, willingness to learn, that we receive that illumination; the ‘right’ attitude (the attuned attitude) opens the way for the re-assessment of priorities promised by the Full Moon in Pisces.

Everyone, have a wonderful Full Moon! Concentrate on realizing the Full Moon energies and what they can show you about your own priorities, and maybe hold back from too-active communications or actions, as that’s where the booby-traps lie.

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida – ‘Barcas en la Playa’ 1909 {{PD}}

The Full Moon occurs at 11:35 AM PDT on the 29th of August at 6 Pisces 06, and it makes us work to find its meaning; though it’s quick to tell us that our previous optimistic efforts, our openness, what we’ve shared publicly and with the social circle, our beliefs and faith (all through a waning opposition of the Moon-Earth to Jupiter), and that our ideals, creative efforts, inspirations or delusions (conjunction to Neptune) contribute to the Full Moon results we see now, it offers us no other major indicators of what may transpire. We could, then, conclude that we are getting feedback on our attitude toward or efforts to acquire bounty, to expand our world, to learn something new, to teach, or to interact socially, to assess an ideal, to create or avoid (through Neptunian delusion)–but that would only be part of the story. We may need to use a dream-like perception, a lens that allows the unconscious, the Collective, or the creative faculties to make leaps and connections we wouldn’t make based solely on facts (Jupiter).

The Pisces Full Moon makes two other, minor aspects: a semi-square to Uranus, and a novile to Ceres. The contact to Uranus suggests there is something unanticipated, surprising or unexpected that tosses a monkey wrench into the works, possibly resulting in an abruptly changing viewpoint or need to adapt spontaneously, and the contact to Ceres says there is an element of ‘Natural Genius’ about the revelations of the Full Moon, its endings or conclusions, and the results that come about based on our need to improvise and respond quickly.

Fortuitous outcomes are ours if we refuse to take the initial feedback as definitive. We may see the end of a dream or creative project, a stripping away of illusion, we may get feedback on a fantasy or ideal (Neptune and Pisces placement), and should we then process it by a critical analysis of what we’ve learned (Jupiter and Sun in Virgo) we may shut off the flow of further reverberations and implications. In the Houses of the natal chart that hold the Full Moon, the House that follows, and the House two Houses before (for example, if the FM falls in your 5th, as it does in the general chart for Seattle, the other two Houses involved will be the 6th and the 3rd), we find the areas to watch for potential surprises, revelations, changes in viewpoint, and ‘happy accidents’.

The Sabian Symbol for the Full Moon is, ‘Illumined By A Shaft Of Light, A Large Cross Lies On Rocks Surrounded By Sea’. No matter what faith we embrace, we can’t help but take this as a religiously-oriented scenario; we see ‘fallen faith’, a religious outlook that couldn’t stand up to true spiritual illumination, that falls in the light of new awareness. So, this isn’t about religion at all, it’s about something we ‘had faith’ in that is made obsolete by a dawning understanding, a new insight we are gaining by Full Moon events, and we should expect stirred up emotions (the Sea) because of it.

We always look at the Sun for a Full Moon, as source of the ‘energy’ we experience; it is, ‘A Harem’. Really! The symbolic implication is that there is a stable of valuable, attractive assets available to us–and we should draw on that. These are likely talents, energy, or understanding that we ‘horde’ a bit, hiding them away–now is the time to take them from our internal ‘harem’ and show them to the world! The Jupiter symbol is also worth a look, as the surface outcome will be directly tied to it: ‘Black And White Children Play Together Happily’. Ostensibly, a harmony is reached–look beyond that, for the real gifts.

See my books here, and have a wonderful weekend!
