The AstroEssence: Birth time  No new aspects perfect today–it’s a blank slate, though we do note the Moon moves through late Pisces and trines Mercury, guaranteeing the fog doesn’t lift just yet–so I’d like to address a topic I’ve recently been asked about: What does it mean astrologically speaking when someone doesn’t have a birth time?

First we need to know what birth time describes in the natal chart: it’s used to locate the positions of all planets in the Houses–that is, it defines the exact point on the horizon (the rising degree, as well as sign, with each sign occupying a space of 2 hours on the horizon every day) at birth according to the latitude (how far north or south of the equator the birth place is), and so determines House position for each body, as they are located longitudinally around the chart–and this is true no matter what House system is used.

The natal chart, then, is a map of the sky as seen looking south (if you’re born north of the equator) or looking north (if you’re born south of the equator) from the exact spot on Earth where you’re born, with the bodies located below the Ascendant-Descendant axis (Houses 1-6) not visible from the birth location, while those in Houses 7-12 are potentially visible, if you have the means to spot them. No matter what the House system used, the Ascendant and Midheaven (and their corresponding opposite points) will always be the same for the individual–but in order to know them, we must know the birth time.

What is missing from understanding the individual if you don’t know the time of birth? When the Ascendant is unknown, we can’t be sure how the individual meets the world: how they present themselves, and what others see on first interacting. It’s the Soul’s ‘point of entry’ in terms of time and space, and it is shaped by very early experiences concerning body concepts, concepts surrounding the ‘I Am’, and survival. Typically, the Ascendant describes, among other things, both the personality and the kinds of coping behaviors the individual learned in the early environment; with the latter, these are behaviors that the individual interpreted as guaranteeing survival. We may observe this when someone feels threatened–often they will retreat to some version of and to behaviors rooted in the energy of the Ascendant sign–and we can observe it as the ‘first line’ approach when someone reaches out to others, as the Ascendant energies are seen by the individual as what others value them for, hence the association with helping one survive.

A couple of examples: my Ascendant is Aquarius, and I tackle everything with the mind first, attempting to understand, especially before I move forward–and in early life intellectual acuity seemed to me to be what allowed for success–but the mind is also the place I retreat to: the intellect becomes my weapon, my ambassador, my defense, and understanding is always the goal, and the only thing that makes me feel safe. My husband’s Ascendant is Sagittarius. He tries to meet the world by knowing ‘the facts’, or by engaging immediately and heading for the horizon to have a Sagittarian adventure; when he defends, it’s also with whatever knowledge he can muster, and when he retreats, it’s to wander, physically or mentally, toward that same horizon! So, when the birth time is missing, we’re missing a vital piece of the puzzle, specific to the individual processing and response to her or his part in the world.

The Midheaven is also unknowable without a birth time, though since it inherently carries a sense of removal (the career is a relatively impersonal thing, as is business, and we have no control over the reputation or the way others know us ‘at a distance’, in an entirely impersonal manner) it is most important in terms of timing, with transits to it–so we lose an indicator for worldly opportunity and involvement, as well as the chance to know the ‘flavor’ of our public persona, which can help tell us what others expect us to be, or be good at.

The other big issue is that we are unable to associate planets and signs with their ‘correct’ Houses for the individual. The best we can do is choose a noon chart, smack in the middle of the day for the place of birth, which offers a kind of mid-picture, and gives us our best guess as to a valid Moon–or we can use a sunrise chart for that day, placing the Sun on the Ascendant, which allows the Solar energy to illuminate potentials for the individual in meeting the world. And of course, not having a birth time puts the descriptive burden on the relationships among the various chart bodies–but there is much to be learned there, so we’re never without recourse for at least some knowledge of the individual, when missing a correct time.

Not all altars are quite so obvious. Vicente Poveda y Juan ‘Taufe in Assisi’ 1899 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a doe struck and killed by a mini-van, lying in the middle of a busy highway. Unfortunately, this happens when humans and Nature intersect, and in the woodsy area where I live, it’s not unusual. What was unusual about this scene was the stillness of it, a strangely primitive tableaux, the highway emptied of all activity around the deer, the humans gathered and motionless at a slight distance. It struck me almost as a ritual of mourning, a moment taken to grieve what was destroyed, to respect what once lived. If you need to, take a moment to grieve what you’ve lost recently–sometimes in our modern world we forget how important and powerful saying goodbye, or giving thanks for what was, can be.

For those born with the Sun at 18 Scorpio: This coming year, through to your next birthday, you may find yourself with two goals: healing a rift, and pursuing an important goal. Where you find yourself actually, though, may be between the figurative rock and hard place of health concerns and matters ignored or denied; these require attention before you can successfully mend what’s broken, and fulfill that ambition–but once you do attend to these, follow ideals and dreams for the most effective approach to aim attainment. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

'Woman in a Red Bodice and Her Child' - Mary Cassatt c1900 {{PD}}

‘Woman in a Red Bodice and Her Child’ – Mary Cassatt c1900 {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: We may have difficulty dealing with the reality picture or the demands of the material world or authorities, and this would be rooted in a too-strong conviction that the past offers us the answers to the present. It does not; what does tell us how to handle things are relationships, values, and/ or our financial state. All offer informational or fact-based standards by which to navigate–and that’s a really good thing, because our instincts are definitely on the blink (Mars nov SN and Semi-sq Saturn, Venus nov Hygeia, Mercury opp Sedna)

Not the actual lemon, but amazingly similar. By Fir0002/Flagstaffotos Attribution NonCommercial Unported 3.0

Today’s word image is the first lemon off my greenhouse lemon tree, ready for election night cocktails. Aside from any jokes (yes, we’ll all need alcohol to get through this!) its readiness said to me that it’s time to look at those smaller things we are providing to ourselves and note, however insignificant it seems, the added degree of Self-reliance, as well as gratitude for what could easily be overlooked or dismissed. Focus on small things not only leads to greater appreciation of what we have, it leads us toward awareness of what we can do, and so toward building much larger and more effective accomplishments.

dsc_0060

Update! The actual lemon–and not one but two!

For those born with the Sun at 17 Scorpio: You’ve made some big changes of late, and now, brace yourself, because you’re going to experience the repercussions of going after your ambitions and desires, specifically through having to face all those things you may have ignored, denied, or avoided by going after your dreams. That sounds terrible, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, it’s really about removing those issues that may stand in your way of achieving–and dealing with them offers a kind of healing, one that opens the way to your ultimate success. Bonus: some of what you experience emotionally may belong not to you but to the Collective, so sort feelings before reacting to them. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

'Kamal-ol-molk' A Tehran neighborhood Dushan Tappe 1899 {{PD}}

‘Kamal-ol-molk’ A Tehran neighborhood Dushan Tappe 1899 {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: We concentrate on what’s healthy, right, balanced, and that’s good, and actions are driven by reason, though that latter doesn’t happen until late in the day; before then, actions burst forth from the pressure of strictures, repression, the demands of ‘the rules’, or the expectations of authority. Issues arise from distorted views of power, or lies we’ve accepted about power–great for the US election, right? We can override any misperceptions with a willingness to adjust thinking to fit the real-life situation, conforming to Mother Nature or to the ‘natural’ order of things–a difficult prescription, I know, but one that brings rewards by following instincts, and what we know to be the Truth (no matter how our prejudices have processed it) (Neptune semi-sq Ceres, Mars enters Aquarius, Venus qnx Sedna, Mercury qnx Ceres, Sun conjoined Hygeia)

Today’s word image is green candy. Does that even sound appealing? I took this symbol to say we should ‘eat our greens’–take in what’s good for us, however distasteful to the individual–because it’s going to turn out sweet.

For those born with the Sun at 16 Scorpio: You’ve taken measures to address both the health and real-world power situations–now what? In reality you still need to tackle these subjects–treatment of them was too shallow, too much at the surface to make for effective change–and the reason it’s important is that you need to be ready for the major opportunities you’ll encounter soon in the areas of realizing ambitions and/ or fulfilling desire. Don’t put Self-improvement or Self-definition off, Scorpio! Good luck, and Happy Birthday!

‘Harem Women Feeding Pigeons in a Courtyard’ Jean-Léon Gérôme {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: This can be a crazy good day, facilitating creativity, bringing gains in power and influence, and excellent for communication, signaled by a pile-up of fortuitous indicators–as long as we honor our highest values, our commitments and causes, and our partners and mates. Simple enough, right? Except that our inclination may be to skip, ignore, or compromise on our standards, believing that’s what’s needed to get to the good stuff; it’s not only not necessary, what we get if we stick to our values is way better than what we get if we sully or deny them (Pluto semi-sq Juno, Mars nov Neptune, Venus trine Ceres, Mercury nov Jupiter, parallel Hygeia, and contra-parallel Vesta, Sun sxt Pluto)

Today’s word image is a dove in the rain, hiding her head under her wing. Sometimes the peaceful way requires retreat, with inclement conditions urging us to ‘sit it out’, allowing others their way or command of the situation; other times we actively retreat, using the tactics of passive resistance in order to maintain personal peace in a formidable situation where we might otherwise actively aggress. Be sure you know the difference between the two, and if you choose retreat, consciously choose which one.

For those born with the Sun at 15 Scorpio: Emotional conflict over real-world changes you want to make this year, between now and your next birthday, are likely the centerpiece of this period. On the one hand, you actually know what you’re doing, and should have confidence in those changes you seek to make; on the other hand, you’re not as clear on the actual wisdom of what you want to do, and may have neglected truly thinking through the emotional impact to yourself and important others. Of course, now that’s it’s brought to your attention, you can examine your choices much more effectively, before going forward. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

Today, we float some consideration of what it means to be healthy. Self-portrait in a balloon gondola, Konrad Brandel c1865 {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: Do we take measures to make changes to our own health, or is it that we’re seeing changes in someone else’s? Or does this apply to a more general perception of the positive (or at least, noticeable) nature of recent changes around us? Our level of Self-focus is probably what drives the form for manifestation today; if we’re centered on our own uniqueness or original expression, we could harm relationships or even our financial situation, but if we’re outer-focused, we may see erratic behaviors (our own or others’) that injure or otherwise take a toll on our vanity. It’s a day when we may find ourselves thinking in very specific channels, our thoughts curlicues that fold around on themselves, our psyches far too sensitive to give proper proportion to events, whether they’re internal or external–but if we do try to improve things, especially health-wise, our reformations should stick (Pluto sxt Hygeia, Venus sq Chiron and trine Uranus)

Today’s word image is the green tips of paperwhite bulbs being forced in the winter indoors. Forcing something isn’t always a bad thing; sometimes initially we need to create an artificial condition in order to get something started. Is there some small beginning you’re seeing, that you’d truly like to watch bloom? Give it what it needs to flourish, and then allow Nature to do the rest.

For those born with the Sun at 12 Scorpio: You’ve set yourself on the Path you want to follow, but are your choices working to take you where you want to go? Health matters and other real-world conditions may limit your way forward until they’re attended to; dealing with what you already know to be a problem (but probably thought you could ignore until later) is the only way to get to a space that allows real, significant change, and offers you the influence in your own life that you want to have. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

The AstroEssence: Go on instincts–but be really sure those are instincts, and not desire or blind spot material masquerading as primal knowledge. If you need some help, relationships offer wisdom in one form or another (sometimes they show us what not to do, no?) and follow the money and asset flow in order to identify the smart trends. If you know yourself (and so are able to identify impulses correctly) this can be a very good day for you (Mars trine Sedna, Venus sxt Pallas)

Today’s word image is a three-word text–use the first three words that pop into your head–what does it say? Consider this a message from the Universe.

For those born with the Sun at 11 Scorpio: Luck and opportunity come your way this year, but obliquely, through the pursuit of the every day and the well-intentioned. It’s not glamorous, and it will test your ability to recognize genuine chances at making your name or making a buck, but in either case the opportunities will be there, most likely found through partners, through the Arts, and/ or through matters of the Houses in the natal chart ruled by Jupiter (Sagittarius or ancient association with Pisces) or through which Jupiter is currently transiting (Libra). Good luck, and Happy Birthday, Scorpio!

Don’t make the mistake of believing that because you’re angry, that means you’re right. Ludwig Knaus – Mein Napf ist leer (1886) {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: Thoughts are about achieving health through stripping away, detoxing, and by purging the emotions (Hygeia in Scorpio), and this offers an impetus toward genuine change; interactions and financial moves, however, are all about fulfilling ambitions and desires, so there’s some disparity between what we’re thinking about and where we’re putting our attention and resources. There’s a third prong to our intentions, shown by anger or a deep need to act that brings conflict with those in authority, and that may seriously detour us away from our intended life direction. The crux of the problem is found in how Self-absorbed we are, how insistent on having our way or making an impact, or how angry we are with those running the show–if we can find a constructive outlet, or even just contain our need to assert, we’ll gain enough time and space for reason to prevail. Bonus hint: don’t spend so much time trying to illuminate the past–the reasons why things were as they were are long gone, now, and that may be where a lot of the hidden anger, unnecessarily renewed by our examination, comes from in the first place (Mars sesq NN and sq Ceres, Venus sxt Zeus, Merc conj Hygeia and sxt Pluto, Sun trine SN)

Today’s word image is: during a windstorm a man uses a leaf blower to blow nothing from the sidewalk. Where are you wasting energy? Creating useless noise? Pretending to do something productive that’s anything but? Where are you in denial about the true state of things? Answer this and you may liberate an enormous store of energy/ time that you didn’t know you had, as well as clear out the psychic ‘drains’.

For those born with the Sun at 10 Scorpio: The past seems to have an unreasonably strong hold on you this year, through to your next birthday; it may be that you spent this past year on a creative tear or with your head in the clouds, and so ‘woke up’ to changes you must now review and revise–or maybe you just didn’t want to deal with things, and now the mess left behind must be dealt with. In any case, look at it less for its janitorial duties and more for the possibility to shape what’s coming by modifying and clarifying meaning in what you choose to keep. It’s a powerful position, whether you know it or not, so move forward aware that your choices and actions really do matter. Good luck, and Happy Birthday, Scorpio!

Silence By Nikolay Nikanorovich Dubovskoy {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: With all our attention on the ideals, the creative, and the spiritual, we may miss the way our perceptions around these subjects are unclear–and yet we allow these fuzzy, illusory, or deceptive ideas and images to run our actions and dictate our choices. We are running partly on instinct, partly on ambition, and we somehow find serendipitous material circumstances to support our current direction. The issue comes later, when we examine in the cold, unobstructed light what we created in today’s present. We’re likely then to find 1) that though we did what we did out of mistaken understanding, or following an outright deception, it worked out okay because this was something in line with our instincts, anyway, 2) that one way or another we gained power by pursuing what we wanted, 3) that we may have unintentionally sacrificed our standards to preserve a relationship or financial source, and 4) that sticking to the facts is the wise course–and that latter suggests our best guideline for today is to judge, choose, and decide strictly according to what the facts support (NN parallel Sedna, Juno nov Zeus, Jupiter parallel Pallas, Mars semi-sq Neptune and nov Saturn, Venus sesq Vesta, Sun trine Neptune)

Today’s word image is a beautiful but tarnished old vessel that, according to a child who shows it to you, may or may not contain a djinn. The image suggests something potentially magical within your reach, something it may take a childlike or innocent attitude to discover or make the best of.

For those born with the Sun at 9 Scorpio: Your creative inspirations, ideals, or spiritual revelations dominate the year, through to your next birthday, but it’s up to you to use them in the highest form possible. Methods for making the most of these surging talents/ influences is found in the past, your own or in practices, disciplines, or modes devised by others and handed down through artistic tradition, in forms of service, or in spiritual practice and forms of worship. If you apply yourself to realizing your ideas, you are likely to reach your next birthday in some serious way transformed. Good luck, and Happy Birthday!

The AstroEssence: Today the past looms large, and our vision is filled with opportunities lost, what we should’ve known (whether that’s a reasonable assessment or not), and with remembrance of exaggerated episodes of both positive and negative experiences. Optimism about the future and our goals may be squelched by recall of past missteps. We indulge in so much thought about what was, we may forget that the point of memory is to make better decisions and choices now (Jupiter qnx and Mercury trine the South Node)

‘Mt Fuji Behind a Spider Net’ Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎) 19th century {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a large spider web stretched above a busy highway. I saw this, and wondered, ‘What is that spider hoping to catch? A semi?’ The incongruity brings to mind when we lay out a plan, hoping to accomplish something, but fail to realize how inappropriate the ‘place’ (or venue, or method, or goal) we’ve chosen is. Or is it this: that an optimistic outlook serves us only so far, and that having a real chance at getting what we want requires a more practical, or perhaps more fully informed, plan?

For those born with the Sun at 8 Scorpio: Take care this coming year, Scorpio, as you may suffer a surprising amount of confusion between thoughts and feelings, often being unable to tell them apart. The reason may be that you are carrying some deep emotional perceptions that are trying to surface, and so inadvertently influence the thought processes. Doing some earnest excavation into the emotions will help, as will full-hearted acceptance of your creative urges, rather than the recent, socially-inspired inclination to tamp them down. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

The New Moon in Scorpio is conjoined Mercury, sesquiquadrate Chiron, and trine Neptune. The Sun and Moon conjoined always brings a new start, sparks a beginning, or, as with the event in Scorpio, may see the inception of a mystery, something hidden away, something that presents an illusion or deception, or something we don’t immediately recognize or understand to be a beginning, perhaps because it seems to be destructive, a coming-apart or change. What you need to know is this may bring a dream to realization, eventually, once the healing we’ve been resisting is accomplished, but the New Moon brings only a hint of what’s to come, and possibly delivers it in a form that at first creates delusion, confusion, secrets, or that plunges us into the creative, and so puts us out of touch with the reality picture. We may literally dream it rather than experience it; it may be that it’s only later that the mind can draw the thread from this New Moon start to the eventual fulfillment of the dream, materialization of what was imagined, or to the active application of the ideals to the real-world scenario.

The Sabian symbol is, ‘A Calm Lake Bathed In Moonlight’. This suggests emotional calm (the calm lake) that allows the individual to receive the inspiration or intuition needed (the moonlight). The keyword here might be ‘receptivity’, not just an openness but a stillness that makes us capable of receiving the message without interfering noise or the impulse to immediately react to what’s offered. ‘Bathed’ suggests a Scorpionic immersion, even a kind of pre-verbal, womb state. Allowing ourselves this kind of immersive experience promises at least a start to any difficult healing we may need to undergo, and specifically may spark our initial move toward or awareness of the New Moon dream.

For those born with the Sun at 7 Scorpio: This year, through to your next birthday, will be one of active communication–but it’s up to you whether that will carry a big creative dream forward, whether it will result in a spiritual advance for yourself, or whether you might spend the entire time chasing an illusion, or perpetrating a deception. Good thing it’s up to you, right? Choose according to your ideals, and you should reach your next Solar Return with some version of a magnum opus–we should all be so lucky! Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

I recommend this article by Liz Hathway, if you’re looking for a general peek forward to the US election.
