Scorpio

Scorpio and the preceding sign, Libra By Alexander Jamieson 1822 {{PD}}

As stated in a previous post: decades ago I’d written most of a book on something I termed the Void, the ways we malfunction when we deny, distort, or otherwise misinterpret our Lunar needs (those signified by our natal Moon placement). I talked about the Gap, the space between our genuine needs and our misunderstanding of those needs, and our inadequate attempts to bridge the two, with a goal of offering ways to recognize and remedy these imbalances. The book didn’t go anywhere (it was never completed), but it seems like now might be a good time to pick the bones for any tasty bits they may contain, and if I find enough worth passing on to you, dear Reader, I’ll probably also include it in the Moon book (as the fundamental need is based on Luna), with the new book to be finished (I’ve been working on it every day!) sometime before I expire. I hope. Here on the blog I’ll be posting, in no particular order, some of my thoughts on sign needs and dysfunction, for your edification, discussion, and rebuttal, as inspired by that old manuscript. Today, Scorpio.

What does the Scorpion need, with her sting and her exoskeleton and her deeply perceptive nature? She needs to feel powerful, of course. We can see that the defensiveness of the stinger is a response to the emotional sensitivity of Water, and the exoskeleton a response to the Fixed nature of the sign, as the hardness, the unchangeability, gives the sense of protection, surety, security–but what of the ability of Scorpio to peer straight into the depths of the darkness, unflinchingly? Wouldn’t that prompt fear? Yes, and Scorpio’s need, then, is to feel as if she can handle what she sees–and she sees a sense of power as the answer to her needs: power over the emotions and the emotional nature, enough power to feel safe, and enough power not to be threatened by change or the Truth, no matter what meaning that Truth holds.

We all need to feel we can have an impact on our environment; that’s not unique to Scorpio. Without this belief, we succumb to depression and hopelessness, or we try to prove we do have power via ruthless manipulation of people, things, or circumstances. So, this is a normal need, common to everyone, but Scorpio takes it one step further: Scorpio needs to see their impact through real change, transformation of what surrounds them, or through the wielding of Truth, sometimes like a shield, and sometimes like a bludgeon. They’re not just happy knowing that they have freedom of a kind, or that they have chosen or acted; they must change the landscape in deep and permanent ways for their need to be met, and that means they’re compelled to go beyond what the rest of us do. Scorpionic power brings irretrievable shifts and transformations, like casting a spell from which one can’t escape, or drinking poison that has no antidote, and it’s the no-turning-back quality of it that elevates this sign’s urge from a need to A Need–in fact, the principle one for the sign.

A Scorpio who hasn’t yet accepted that power expression as a legitimate need may project that intensity onto others, believing they make her ‘walk on eggshells’ or that they have hidden agendas or prejudices she can’t pinpoint but believes they’re intent on injecting into events, and so results. Scorpio may disown her own power, casting herself as at the mercy of others or circumstances; a listless Scorpio is a Scorpio who is abdicating not just her power but her responsibility, as well. The Will may become incredibly strong in a Scorpio in denial, casting herself as opponent to, well, everything, but she needs to realize that nothing will change (paradox alert!) until she accepts that change is what she exists to make.

Ways to successfully connect to and satisfy our Scorpio energy (for even if we don’t have a placement there, we all have it in our charts, so that at the very least, matters of the House where Scorpio falls will require dealing with this energy) include allowing the experience of unpleasant emotions (we must learn that we can safely look into the abyss, see what we see, and return from it, enlightened in some way. Scorpio teaches us that an encounter with the darkness doesn’t end in oblivion). We must also proactively learn to negotiate; the Scorpionic energy sees these kind of interactions as a contest, a ‘Sting ’til You Win’ scenario. What’s really needed is to understand that successful negotiation requires both parties get something out of the deal–if they don’t, it reveals itself to be a war, with one party collecting the spoils, the other angry and in ruins.

Scorpio energy needs to practice taking steps that make a discernible difference in the life. Start small, until you’re comfortable with the energy, by using Taurean pursuits, such as cooking, artisanal creation, or measures taken to insure comfort, to bring about changes that impact the senses. That will help ground the Fixed Water, with its natural tendency to need but resist flow; in drawing in other elements, and manipulating materials, we give that Scorpio urge something to grab on to, resonating with the Fixed energy, and we offer something tangible that prompts an emotional response, satisfying the Water factor.

When it comes to relationships, it’s pretty obvious Scorpio is more Self-protective than most. What looks like them being mysterious is really them lurking inside their own feelings, unwilling to show those feelings even to themselves. Dark and brooding may seem attractive, but more often than not it’s a symptom, one where unacknowledged and even unrecognized emotion is bubbling to the surface, making disorienting and unsteady feeling in a Scorpio who just wants to nail that feeling down and control it–and if you think of Scorpio disowning the feeling nature, that’s really the picture you get, someone desperately trying to nail water in place! They’ll have to connect that it’s okay to feel a feeling, that just having an emotion doesn’t unleash world-crushing destruction, to the fact that they’ll experience feelings and that those feelings will naturally change and change again, fluctuating as they flow in relationships, and that they’ll be able to handle it. Nothing scares a Scorpio like chaos (though the ones who love it are convinced they’ll get power out of it, making them black hat Scorpions), which is why it’s so ironic that Scorpios who don’t accept their need for power create such chaos around themselves. The other Scorpio fear is too much routine, promising no change at all, that can strike them like a waking nightmare. So go figure. Carpe diem, my Scorpio friends–you can handle it.

Your Weekend 2-3 July 2016 An Instinctual Picnic

'A Picnic at Portofino' George Spencer Watson 1910 {{PD}}

‘A Picnic at Portofino’ George Spencer Watson 1910 {{PD}}

Saturday our thoughts and communications have something beautifully instinctual about them; be sure to really listen to yourself and to others, as the unconscious perceptual nature makes itself and its wisdom known, and that means there are no stumbles if we’ll simply pause to hear what’s really going on (and which way we should go–the instincts are dead on with that!) Even with the potential for scenarios requiring adjustment (either to the material situation and/ or to what we think we know), we find that the instincts will serve us if we’ll just give them some attention (Mercury nov Sedna and trine Pallas, the Sun semi-sq Sedna and qnx Saturn)

Sunday presents a radically mixed (and so confusing) bag: on the one hand we may find that things we’ve said and done in the past may hamper us now, and the reality picture seems to not only contradict our highest values and priorities, but to actually impede us in exercising our status (that’s a wide net that generally covers circumstances where we would normally be empowered to act but for some reason can’t). Add to this the potential to be mislead, even mightily deceived, and we could feel there’s nothing we can count on. Contrast this with the way creativity and opportunity are spread out before us like a picnic; we are offered rare, nearly guaranteed circumstances for future success, and if we can keep our heads screwed on straight, and find creative venues that suit our specific, unique sensibilities, we can give that dream, the really big one, a reasonable chance for manifestation (Juno sesq SN, Saturn contra-parallel Vesta, Jupiter parallel NN, Mercury sesq Mars, Sun trine Neptune)

P. H. Fabre CC BY 4.0

The titling on the picture reads: “THE HOME-COMING OF THE BRIDE Having at last found a cavern that promises well as a dwelling-place, the male Scorpion leads his bride into it. Next morning the cave has only one tenant” But they don’t say which one! Photo by P. H. Fabre CC BY 4.0

This weekend’s word image is something my husband observed this morning and shared with me in an email: “I stood behind a woman at the bus stop this morning who had a Scorpio tattoo on her toe and then, when the bus I was on was driving through downtown, it stopped next to a car whose license plate said WTRSIGN.” We may be dealing with action and choice dictated both by the need for conscious change (Mars in Scorpio) and those matters ignored, denied, or that enrage that may be driving us from the unconscious (Black Moon Lilith, also in Scorpio), and individually we may look for this effect in matters of the natal Houses that hold Water signs. Expect strong emotional reactions to be the initial signal, pushed by a psychic ‘wave’, that mental or physical change is underway–then watch which direction following those emotions may take you.

Have a wonderful, safe, and restful weekend, and to all in the U.S., Happy Independence Day!

How to Make It Through the Holidays: Scorpio

See? You can dress up anything to look a little more Scoprio friendly--don't ask me what the centerpiece is. 'A Black Cat Table' from 'The Book of Hallowe'en' 1919 by Ruth Edna Kelley {{PD}}

No matter what you do or don’t celebrate, it’s the holiday season–there’s no way to avoid it. In the newsletter I shared a few tongue-in-cheek suggestions for how to survive this annual time of family, food, fights, fun, fruitcake, and all those other ‘f’ words, and I’ll be sharing a little advice for each sign, one at a time. Your Nemesis, listed at the end of the sign, suggests who might be out to sabotage or just give you a hard time, while your angel is the sign energy you can call on in others for assistance, and your personal elf or cherub is the sign energy that will cheer you up and work behind the scenes to make your holiday special. Watch for the rest of the signs during the coming week.

Scorpio  Why do you begin brooding at dawn on November 2nd? Just ’cause the Dead have had their Day and won’t walk among the living for another year is no reason to pout; the holiday season seems to be all cheer and candy canes, but a current of pressure from obligations, expectations, and being trapped in the same house as all those people you fled at 18 runs below the surface like lava through Hades–there Scorp, I knew that’d bring a smile to that punim! It’s really not your time of year, in so many ways; people just rub you wrong, and the next stranger who comes up to you and says, ‘Smile! It can’t be that bad!’ while maddening holiday music plays in an over lit and overheated store may not walk away in one piece. It’s all you can do to put up with such garish seasonal displays, so when it’s your own family and friends who’re acting so . . . shallow, and nagging you for being a ‘downer,’ what’s a moody loner to do? Crawling into a cave (probably) isn’t an option, but taking a little time for your own personal kind of pick-me-up is. You might like to approach it by going off for a bit of morbid Christmas fun, sinking into any of dozens of Christmas-themed horror movies, or ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas,’ perhaps, or ‘The Comfort of Strangers,’ ‘Let The Right One In,’ anything with Vincent Price, catching up on ‘American Horror Story,’ reading Stephen King, Patricia Highsmith, Ian McEwan, Poe, or Larson’s ‘Dragon Tattoo’ series, to name a few possibilities–because really, a good, creepy tale will ease you out of ‘The Veil’ season and into that time of year we’re most likely to reflect on our lives and what we have to celebrate. You might also join the party by transforming an old tradition into a new one: how about changing the Christmas afternoon drop-in of friends and family to a candle-lit evening cocktail party–same guests, just with muted lights and music that takes the twinkle down a notch and makes it more intense, and more elegant, with ‘daring’ or more exotic food–something with unusual mushrooms, and perhaps a touch of holiday absinthe, if I know Scorpio. This might also be courtin’ time for you; you can play Pluto or Persephone to your opposite number, whether this is pursuit of a new relationship or renewal of an old one. For you, being happy during the holidays has a lot to do with not abandoning your need for a hint of darkness and for some time alone, or in intimate company–and it doesn’t hurt to honor the urge to transform some group occasion that you normally find trying into something a little more copacetic for Scorpionic sensibilities, with your best opportunity perhaps coming at the New Year, where we see old Father Time born anew as l’enfant 2012, ’cause you’re all about killing the old, and resurrecting it in a new form. Your Nemesis this holiday season: Libra, Sagittarius, or Taurus/ Your secret angel: Cancer/ Your own personal elf or cherub: Pisces

5-6 March 2010: Rebelations

05 Friday Mar 2010

Kelly M. Beard, Moon, My Daily Astrology Diary, Sagittarius, Scorpio

We kick off my ‘jump in at the middle’ forecast with a present moment picture of the Moon opposed Sedna and conjunct Pallas, suggesting ultimate wisdom lies, at least for now, in honoring the emotions and following the impulses they suggest–just be sure that you aren’t confusing others things (thoughts of vengeance or wish-fulfillment scenarios) with the pure intention of clear emotion.

By 2 PM PST the Moon makes a T-square with the Vesta/ Neptune opposition, and trines Uranus, bringing an occassion where we must face and reconcile the opposing energies, which have been in place for a while but which we may have successfully ignored up ’til now. It’s a showdown between those things we honor and find sacred v. ideals as we live them, fantasies, dreams (as in hopes and what we wish to achieve), and delusions; the Moon comes along and via the emotions and intuitions forces a reconciliation of any discrepancies between the sacred and our Neptunian impulses. What comes forward can vary from emotionally tragic (as we realize nothing is as we thought it was) to finding that we are essentially manifesting our dreams and intentions, and honoring our most vital energies, to a startling degree. The trine to Uranus makes any revelations (my finger slipped as I typed, and at first the word was ‘rebelations’! which is precisely how for some this will manifest, as rebellion sweeps the scene and bestows a new level of knowledge and way of looking at things) sudden, immediate, and perhaps disorienting, and be prepared–this may all happen in front of the group.

At 4-6 PM PST the Moon squares Neptune more closely, and we may follow our revelations/ rebelations with the dawning of a new ideal (which for some will actually be a new delusion), and possibly with a new goal to aspire to. 6:30 PM the Scorpio Moon goes on to square Chiron, and draws our attention to the way those ‘old’ ideas or ideals may have hurt us, and could spur healing, or a re-assessment of our emotional state. By 7:30 the Moon is trining Venus–thank goodness, we’ll all need to be in soothing emotional waters after the day we’ve had–and we may find safe harbor in loving relationships, or may realize the profit we’ll enjoy from today’s Neptune-themed re-visioning. For a scant few, this Venus aspect will combine with the energies preceding it to bring a major financial ‘reveal’ that will bring us back to the reality of things, whether these are better or worse than we’ve been thinking.

Void begins at 8:32 PM PST, and Scorpio Moon in Void mode can bring a little transitory excitement through experimentation, secrets uncovered or shared (perhaps indiscriminately) and by adding a generally mysterious air to everything we do–just keep in mind that the Void carries an energy that can be either protective or disappointing (in that sense that ‘nothing will come’ of the act perpetrated) or that promises an ‘out-of’control’ feeling (in the sense that things born at this time won’t proceed as expected), so act with care (Mars at 00 and retro says action is dicey and maybe not as informed or conscious as we’d like, anyway, intimating that extra careful choices will make for the best time).

Moon enters Sagittarius at 11:36 PM PST, trining Mars and making us giddy with the urge to ‘reach out’ (West Coasters, no drunk dialing!) We sober up pretty quickly as the other party reaches back (Ceres sextile Neptune) and we are suddenly responsible for our fantasies. Being held accountable is a good thing, in the end, and one to keep in mind in making our choices in the first place–if we do we won’t go wrong.

By 10 AM PST on the 6th we’ve got an excellent sense of empowerment (Moon quincunx Juno, semi-square Pluto), though some will see this as a challenge or even a burden; for those few who’ve been waiting (and whining!) to have more say, embrace it! and don’t discount the possibilities and potentials just because some effort is called for on your part.

4 PM PST on the 6th the Sag Moon squares Mercury–another ‘best keep our mouths shut’ period–it only lasts a couple of hours, and a little vow of silence may allow us to sit back and observe interactions and energies that, if we jumped in and spouted off, we would definitely miss. By 8 PM the Moon squares Jupiter, and our attempts at expansion or interaction on the social scene just rub us the wrong way emotionally; as well we may be presented with intuited information that reveals the reasons behind our emotional perceptions. This is an excellent opportunity to trim the emotions to fit our own needs or the social milieu’s more appropriately.

11:30 PM on the 6th sees the Moon sextile Zeus–some will explore their own ambitions with this energy, while others will find it easy to impose their Will on others–try to ride it out by using the energy to examine goals and your effectiveness in working toward them. By 6:36 AM PDT (don’t forget the time change, for those affected!)–scratch that–it’s 5:36 AM PST, with time change next week– the Moon Ts with the Sun/ Earth axis, bringing emotional considerations of where we’re headed materially and spiritually–something of a natural worship and reflection time for those so inclined to accepting a Higher Power.

Moon, My Daily Astrology Diary, Scorpio

The Scorpio Moon moves along, doing its Scorpio thing, through the early part of the day PST; a lack of significant aspects among the Moon and the other bodies puts the emphasis on what the Moon may be aspecting in the natal chart, and on the matters of the natal House being transited. 2 PM-ish PST the Moon finally steps up and forms a T-square with the Sun/ Earth axis, and things start hoppin’. Or rather, they may have been hoppin’ before, but now they’ll take on shape, with energies corresponding to our own attention drawn to emotional and intuitive reactions to the life landscape. It may seem that things suddenly pop into focus, as if we have a command of our energy and the direction that it flows that wasn’t present earlier in the day. This likely brings on examination of something concerning the individual role and goals as they relate to the group role or involvement, echoing the recent Leo Moon.

By 6 PM PST we see the Scorpio Moon conjunct Pallas, setting a tone of calm, collected consideration of our emotional state; this is an excellent time to get a feeling perspective on the current situation, as we’ll be measuring and responding from a point of wisdom and common sense. Take advantage of the emotional clarity and equilibrium possible, as by the 9 PM hour the Moon is opposed Sedna, quincunx Juno, and trine the South Node; this introduces a serious note that may leave us feeling very uncertain. We sense that there’s something we’re not seeing (Sedna) that’s challenging our sense of our own empowerment (Juno), specifically questioning whether we know the full scope and implications of our position (Scorpio), and we search our memories for past experience (SN) that may clue us in to those things we sense but can’t pinpoint now (Sedna influence), as we try to discern the shape of things to come.

The 3 AM hour starts a chain reaction where the Moon engages energies, boom boom boom–a square to Venus (tension over values, finances, or relationships), a simultaneous sextile to Mercury and trine to Uranus (the messages are shocking, surprising, or meant to enlighten), then squares to Chiron and Neptune (emotional difficulties rooted in old wounds and delusions–let them go, for gosh sakes!) leading to the Void that begins at 8:12 AM on the 6th, prompting West Coasters to begin the day in relaxed mode.

If you enjoy these daily Moon-centered forecasts you may want to get the outlook for February, March, and April, available only in Eclipse: In-Depth Astrology for the 21st Century http://dogandsunflower.wordpress.com/eclipse-in-depth-astrology-for-the-21st-century/

4 Feb 2010: Self-Reliance

Moon, My Daily Astrology Diary, Scorpio

The lovely Moon enters Scorpio at 8:56 AM PST on the 4th; why, you may ask, do I call her lovely? After a trip through Libra, making so many easy contacts (trines through the latter half of  Aquarius) our Lady of Reflective Illumination is serene–until she enters Scorpio and emotions want to get big, via a square to Jupiter (4 PM PST), but the same aspect brings immediate feedback from the social sphere, shutting us down (and this may come through the spewing of ‘facts’ by those who wish to get the upper hand, a take on the Jupiterian value ‘knowledge’). The imperative now is to be open, honest, truthful, revealing (the positives of a strong Scorpio); exaggeration just won’t fly, and those surrounding us (Jupiter, Pisces) are not only looking to spar (the square), they’re perhaps holding themselves up as an idealistic example of how we should be (Pisces)–but we’re not buying it.

Hand colored woodprint by Samuel Coccius 1566

We can’t forget, though, that at the same point the Moon is making a sextile to Pluto, and this suggests that the way to handle a less-than-supportive environment is to make the effort to change it–maybe not the way of dealing that would be our first choice, but highly effective: if we give the situation our own structure, if we make the rules (Capricorn), then we can simply follow them, being Self-reliant–and leaving think-they-know-it-all others in our wake.

The Moon squares Mars in Leo, 9 PM PST, and only adds to the tension–clashes at this point tend to be over bruised egos, or one Being imposing his or her Will on another. Maybe getting to bed early is the answer; certainly, we’ll need our strength for the next day, as the Moon moves on to square all those energies in Aquarius–but at least we can look forward to getting the message, delivered with a strong dose of the reality we’re in the midst of (Moon sextile to Capricorn Mercury).

Today’s Link: Time and Procrastination deftly discussed http://www.astroinquiry.com/2010/01/cosmic-stall-and-the-hanged-man/

And at least try to have a great day–I know I will (try, that is!) And if you want a more detailed forecast, please see http://dogandsunflower.wordpress.com/eclipse-in-depth-astrology-for-the-21st-century/ Thanks!

Monday Poll Round-Up, the Internal Struggle ‘to Know,’ and the Scorpio Moon: Lookin’ for Love

Monday poll round-up, Moon, Scorpio

Happy Monday, and welcome to the weekly poll round-up, where we shake out the poll numbers in an effort to see trends in thought and feeling. I was heartened this week by the high number of positive responses in each of the polls, especially those that evinced a healing and contribution-oriented attitude. The more of us who approach daily life with a consciousness of the interconnectedness of all things, and the willingness to add in positive ways to the Collective energy and experience, the more likely we are to sway things in a positive direction on a planetary scale.

Sound a little high falutin’? I think not, considering that roughly 17-20% in each survey chose an answer that reflects some fear or a distrust of the Universe. There are many many reasons this may be so, and I’m in no position to judge those reasons. What I do know, however, is that the Collective positivity that is in evidence will influence those who are momentarily caught in doubt and fear, and can bouy them in ways they’re hardly conscious of.

I also thought it was tremendously positive that so many showed an awareness of the need to take action, whether it was to make fundamental changes (25%) or to make clearer contact with the internal (a full 47%). Now, I always assume that I’m having experiences at least in part to draw my attention to something that may be brewing within the greater sphere, and these results, plus some recent experiences with individuals, have emphasized that there is a small contingent who are wrestling internally with change and the inevitability of it. They want to grow, they are aware that life is calling them to, and yet they are having great difficulty giving up the idea that they already know–what’s best, the way things ‘should’ be, who they are in the now, and though this drives them to seek guidance and situations that challenge them to grow, they also reject outright the feedback they’re receiving–because they cannot acknowledge that the ‘old’ knowledge that seemed to work so well for them before is no longer valid. I see this as a manifestation of Pluto in the final degree of Sagittarius; those who prosper are those who see that change is coming, and who surrender to a fresh input of information, that gives them the knowledge to go forward, successfully in charge of change within their own lives. This applies to everyone, myself included; for some, the hardest thing will be to give up the outdated idea of who or what they are.

And finally, the Moon enters Scorpio this morning, and we’re, yes, lookin’ for Love, and, you betcha, it’ll be in all the wrong places with this Moon that will dig a little too much, stirring something deep in the Scorpio cave; and by Love I mean any nurture or enrichment or comfort that brings security. How do we combat this tendency to turn over all the wrong rocks, to kiss all the wrong frogs? With a serious, even passionate, need for emotional honesty. Embracing our own emotional depths, accepting even the less shiny or flattering impulses we have, and as well forgiving those in others (even though we may be perfectly justified in holding trespassers at arm’s length!) is the way to deal with this Moon’s squares to the Nodal axis, Chiron, and Neptune. A commitment to emotional honesty also keeps at bay the possible hurt, delusion, and misdirection along the life path that comes to those who insist they couldn’t possess a darker side. An opposition to Vesta only challenges us, again, to be scrupulously truthful, specifically by putting that which is sacred before us and daring us to live up to what we say are our standards. Choose with care, and the Scorpio Moon’s trine to Uranus (the 25th at approx. 9 PM PST) will show how well we’ve handled this, and could bring forward a depth of satisfaction we didn’t really anticipate.

And whatever you do, have a great Monday!
