‘The Spirit of Winter’ By Pierre-Louis-Marius Poujol 1883 {{PD}}

In the Northern hemisphere, Winter Solstice is when the Earth is tilted as far away from the Sun as possible–and in the Southern hemisphere, this is the same moment the Summer Solstice occurs, as that half of the globe is tilted as far toward the Sun as it will get. This year it happens at 7:27 PM PST of the 21st. Let’s get a gander at the chart and what it might promise for the next three months, until the Northern hemisphere Spring/ Southern hemisphere Fall Equinox, of 2024.

The most striking thing may be that the Sun and Moon will be out-of-sign trine, Sun at 29 stressful degrees of Sagittarius, the Moon just entered a new sign, at 00 Taurus. At the same moment, the Sun will be closely opposed Vesta-Earth in Gemini, quincunx Sedna, and semi-sextile Pluto, with all these at 29 degrees of their respective signs. Could the tension run any higher, or for that matter, be more dangerous? Stressed energies are energies that can express unpredictably, specifically because perceptions may tell those affected that there’s no other choice–but we need to remember there is, there always is.

Our attention may be on what we find sacred, on what we revere, and so feel we must protect (Sun opp Vesta-Earth), with feelings ‘new’, in the sense that we didn’t know we felt this way (Moon at 00). Our instincts and those things we ‘know’ but aren’t conscious of may make us uncomfortable, bedeviling us with things that we just can’t quite put our finger on (qnx Sedna)–in fact, we may feel it’s dangerous if we don’t figure it out (semi-sxt Pluto)–but those are emotional perceptions discerned through the mind (Gemini Moon), and so being interpreted with all the pitfalls that occur when the mentality tries to define the heart.

Venus and Mars are semi-sextile, suggesting that relationships, sex, love, and aggression may act as outlets for all this tension, as may a pair of quincunxes: Pallas-Chiron (every time we try to be practical or act wisely, we open a wound) and Mars-Uranus (spontaneity or chaos accompanies action), with Uranus also trine Juno (acting freely and off-the-cuff is empowering), which itself is sextile Venus (but declaring our freedom will affect relationships or earning power) and square Mars (and maybe start a fight).

And Zeus is quincunx Neptune and opposed Eris, which may cause the most kerfuffle or draw our attention most strongly. Moving toward what we desire won’t quite bring what we imagine it will (and that begs the question: are we clear on what we’re headed for?), and may stir up the ire of those who’d like us to stay put. Being as aware as possible of stressful energies that will be abundant (and realizing we don’t have to react to them), while remembering discrepancies between our thinking and our feelings, will help us navigate–and too, knowing that pursuing what we want may cause some upset, we can weigh whether that upset is justified, or just someone not respecting our boundaries.

Thoughts On Jupiter and Saturn, Together Again (Or Still?) + Your Weekend 19-21 December 2020 Expect A Blossoming

Cherry Blossoms in the Evening, by Matsubayashi Keigetsu, Kabuki-za, Tokyo, Japan 1951 {{PD}}

If you’re an astrology aficionado, you’ve likely been focused for some time on the potentials of this current (as Jupiter and Saturn started out within orb of each other in Capricorn early December-ish, with Saturn going into Aquarius first) and future connection (perfecting at 8:14 AM of the 21st at 00 Aquarius 28 as Jupiter catches up). There’s a lot of material out there, so I won’t try to be definitive; I’ll just offer a few observations. One thing we should note right away is that this is an aspect happening now, and that means it’s happening to everyone–and that makes where it falls in the individual natal chart of prime importance, in terms of sorting out the meaning for each one of us.

What effect we can expect in the natal House where this conjunction occurs? We might want to look at Jupiter in Capricorn as previous beliefs about rules, or maybe freedom provided by structure or an intact system, the scaffolding beneath the social order, or beliefs in institutions, authorities, or elders, and Saturn in Capricorn as the hammer coming down, suggesting areas where we have become completely hemmed in, if possible even more so than ever before, and these applying to one or more subjects of the natal House(s) holding Capricorn. With Saturn’s move into Aquarius, we take a Higher Mind perspective: I see why this is as it is, I understand the human need for boundaries, for understanding the nature of things–and I see where I should (and can most effectively) rebel, and gain true independence. We can flag which barriers need to come down, which authorities to support, and with Jupiter’s Aquarius debut, we start sorting our place in the social order, asking ourselves, to which groups do I genuinely belong, and where should I strike out on my own?

There are so many possible permutations of this, so many potential manifestations, but we can sum up at least one related idea as ‘More Or Less’. We may see a marked expansion of one thing even as we see a diminishing of another. These may be complementary (happening in tandem–more water in the glass means less air) or they may not relate to each other at all (a glass of air, and a glass of water, and ne’er the twain shall meet), or loss and gain, the modernizing of beliefs and life structures (to include those institutions and others we support and regard as holding authority), beliefs coming up against reality (and vice versa), more rules, greater restrictions, real-world opportunities that could lead to positions of authority, an elevation in status, or that might age us in place!

Also consider the way the conjunction could unite matters of the two Houses ruled by these planets. It’ll be a pairing with the Saturn-ruled House following the Jupiter-ruled one, meaning that the larger idea of the consequences of learning from and dealing with matters of one House lead to development of our attitudes toward matters of the following one. For instance, if you have Sagittarius on the 1st and so Capricorn on the 2nd, you may see how your personal efforts to expand, reach out to the world, go adventurin’, to teach or learn, or the famous, bachelor-esque, ‘can’t pin me down’ attitude has brought about some sort of Capricornian development affecting personal assets, earning capabilities, talent expression, or the way you feel about and see yourself. Maybe one’s cavalier attitude in dating the boss’ daughter has made her father consider you unsuited for promotion–or maybe your sunny optimism has created reward, a chance at talent expression, or a promotion you might not have otherwise been offered.

Embrace the Real, or Fail to Heal: For the 19th, we’re offered a crisp, clear view of reality–will we take it in? We see precisely where we are able to exercise our power and prerogatives in the real world (Saturn sxt Juno), and are offered a chance to not only adjust our thinking accordingly, aided by fine-tuned instincts, but find we’re at a point where past efforts coalesce into perceptible results (Superior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury, Mercury qnx Sedna). There’s only one issue, really, but it’s a major one: we may also become aware of how much we gain by keeping alive our wounds (Venus trine Chiron). Love can heal, but for some of us, it will be a struggle to let go of something we’ve seen pay off so handsomely.

The Devil Made Me Do It: Our challenge for the 20th is to sort fact from fancy, as what’s at stake is much more important than we realize in the moment. We may be tempted to violate our highest values, do what’s unhealthy, spill secrets, harm relationships (this either because we can’t keep what we know to ourselves or because of our own desire to be disruptive), all possibly driven by a deeply held belief that we’re being held back or held down. That’s not true; if we go with unfettered fantasy today, we cause our own downfall (Neptune opp Vesta, Venus qnx Black Moon Lilith and Uranus, and parallel Saturn, Mercury sesq Hygeia).

Be Optimistic: The 21st sees both the Saturn-Jupiter conjunction and the Solstice, the longest night of the year in the Northern hemisphere, the shortest in the Southern. Personal effects may be momentarily overshadowed by larger matters, societal or even global ones–and that’s okay, though in all arenas there will be intimations, at the very least, of shifts in power (Pluto semi-sq Ceres). We’ll have plenty of time going forward to consider the conjunction’s effects; right now enjoy that tinge of optimism in the air (Venus parallel Jupiter). Until then, stay safe, and enjoy this point of extremes in our yearly trip around the Sun!

The AstroEssence for the 17th: Why is it that everywhere we look today, we seem to see circumstances within our reality that contradict our highest values, that challenge those causes to which we’re dedicated, and that point out the flaws in our mate or partner? This seems to be so, even when these conditions are things we’ve chosen, the result of our energy expenditures, which we assume should mean they’d be much more to our liking. What’s gone wrong? Well nothing, really, it’s just that the current focus is on ‘the facts’ and how restrictive, punitive, judgmental, or harsh they seem, and that doesn’t leave any room for how these things make us feel. Add that component to your perceptions, and suddenly things will take on dimension, depth, and be a whole lot more user-friendly. Take note of the Sun-Merc parallel, as this is the lens through which we’re viewing the world today; it shines a light on the tension within the mentality, as Mercury slows to retrograde in Capricorn, with the turnaround bringing a period for considering our material assets and for really digging into what’s holding us back (Saturn sesq Vesta, Sun parallel Mercury)

Today’s word image is a concept, ‘procrastination’. I’m always dismayed when people seem to treat procrastination as if it’s a disease they’ve caught, one over which they have no control. They smile and shrug sheepishly and blame the mysterious power of procrastination for keeping them from doing, being, or changing. I think this comes, at least in part, from a serious misunderstanding of what procrastination is–we seem to see it as a trait, or perhaps an affliction–but it’s a choice. And it’s not a choice made because our goal is to procrastinate; we procrastinate because of whatever else we don’t want to face, do, discover, admit, or engage with, and that’s the important point: procrastination isn’t a thing, it’s just a multi-syllabic name for a pig-headed refusal to acknowledge and deal with a difficult situation. Using the word ‘procrastinate’ gives us distance from something that’s actually very immediate; maybe from now on instead we should say, ‘I refuse to deal with x’, and bring the focus and the responsibility back to ourselves.

For those born with the Sun at 26 Sagittarius: You are on the verge of making some very smart choices and moves–in fact, things may already be in motion now–but for success you’ll need to take the ‘right’ intellectual stance, that is, to place what you want to do in the mental context that will support it and facilitate your efforts. That may sound vague, until you realize that viewpoint is everything; someone who doesn’t believe they can climb a mountain in the first place will never begin the journey, much less seek out the gear and find a path forward. If you have any natal placements at 24-29 of Cancer these can provide an answer to how to proceed–otherwise, watch transiting energies, including the Moon–when they hit this degree area during the coming Solar year, they can play a vital part in energizing your intents and drawing them to the next step. Good luck, Sagittarius, and Happy Birthday!

No matter what your beliefs, get together with friends and celebrate the solstice point of change and renewal. In the Northern Hemisphere, we mark how dark it’s been, and how this is the turning point–from here on out, the light grows. This year the Solstice occurs at 2:44 AM Pacific time on the 21st; as always, this marks the Sun’s entry into Capricorn, and this year it happens just after the Moon in Libra has squared the Solar orb (suggesting the climate has been emotionally harsh, especially in relationships), and as the Sun makes a sextile to Mars and semi-square to Venus, suggesting the tone for the season may be one of choosing, doing, and doing so perhaps aggressively; and what do we remember from the Sun-Venus making the same contact on the 14th? That things get better from here–and this time, the change sticks.
