Painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, depicting a scene from Kalevala, a Finnish epic poem. The warrior Lemminkainen had been killed, his body hacked to pieces and thrown into the dark river that flows through the underworld, Tuonela. His mother, having collected the parts from the river and sewing them back together, looks up to see a single bee bringing back honey from the halls of the god Ukko, a wondrous ointment that would bring her son to life. This suggests Lilith as a mother, the lengths and dark depths to which she would go for her child, and the projection of the (sacrilegious) idea of taking resurrection into her own hands.

His mother, having collected the parts from the river and sewn them back together, looks up to see a single bee bringing back honey from the halls of the god Ukko, a wondrous ointment that would bring her son to life. This suggests Lilith as a mother, the lengths and dark depths to which she would go for her child, and the projection of the (sacrilegious) idea of taking resurrection into her own hands.

A Little on Lilith

Lilith is an attractor—it’s one of those qualities we almost hate to recognize in her, as it’s so much easier to call her a bad girl; we’re so much more comfortable dismissing her as a problem, rather than recognizing that there are things about her that draw us to her, things we might like to have or be ourselves. She is said to sleep with demons—but isn’t that what a patriarchy that had been defied would say about the one who defied it? It’s undeniable that her dark qualities have a hypnotic pull; she is the shadowy alley we enter, the deep beyond the cliff’s edge that tempts us to step over, the lightless closet into which we reach, because we want to know. That was said to be Eve’s sin, a desire to know; it’s also said that Lilith returned to the Garden of Eden as the serpent who famously offered the Apple of Knowledge to Eve, hesitant, I-came-from-the-rib-not-made-of-an-equal-portion-of-creation-‘dust’-as-was-his-first-wife. Lilith is something more: she’s the woman (or the anima in men) that knows who she is: an equal to anyone else, in that most important sense of the word, the one describing our equality at the level of our basic humanity—and by seeing herself as equal, she succeeds in claiming equal rights, she succeeds in claiming the right to know, and asks permission from no one to do so.

What is Lilith’s real power? In demanding equality she became a screen for projection of all that the social sphere deemed undesirable—and so Lilith may speak much more of the power others attribute to those things they think they are not; she is a catch-all for everything deemed ugly and wrong, everything termed degrading to the feminine ideal within a culture. But with high Self-esteem as her hallmark, the source of her compelling and attractive nature may lie within us: she is an attractor because she has declared herself free and equal in a way we all desire to be, as well.

7 June our empowerment options come instinctively—either we know what to do, or we just don’t. Those who routinely block the unconscious will feel lost. Relationships and/ or finances get in the way of making uninhibited choices or taking action freely, and we may find ourselves resenting what we otherwise really need and want in our lives—the other possibility is that we find ourselves uncomfortable or unhappy trying to accommodate someone we love, or the needs of our pocketbook. We are sure of our values and what we’re dedicated to, and this clears the mental arena and makes perceptions unusually sharp (barring the empowerment/ unconscious conundrum) (Perfecting today: Juno conjunct Sedna, Venus quincunx Mars, Sun trine Vesta and parallel Mercury)

Today’s image is an early summer garden already overrun with growth. Though some might see this as evidence of abundance, it can be overwhelming for a gardener–too much to do! This image corresponds to what a great many of us have been going through lately–too much happening in our lives to handle all at once. What we need to remind ourselves of is that all this new growth is good, that it offers us tremendous choice, that it will mature at its own rate, and that all we need to do is keep our eye on what we really care about.

8 June beauty may blossom in some ugly places, and amazing transformations may, for one day, become routine. Relationships or financial situations may alter in a heartbeat—but if one or the other does change, it won’t be something you weren’t able to anticipate if you are honest with yourself. In fact, that may be the theme today: honesty brings reward, even if that reward is only that one knows the truth, especially in terms of resources or with others. That’s actually good, as it’s clear the reality picture needs modification, especially as this applies to how and where what we’ve learned from our wounds, or our Chirotic skills, may be better employed. (Perfecting Today: Venus trine Pluto, Sun quincunx Saturn, Chiron square Sun-Earth axis)

2 June we find our worth through avenues of empowerment, through Self-expression that lets us have an impact on our life or our environment, but we need to be aware that the well-lighted path before us has a few dark, crooked corners that we just can’t see yet—be prepared. 19 May we are more than ready to face the Powers-that-Be, and to wield some power of our own. The stakes feel exceptionally high, and may be stated in a Love or Power equation, a false dichotomy if there ever was one. The reality is we needn’t give up either option, if we have the cojones to openly refuse to abandon either. The only thing this will require, besides the requisite chutzpah, will be a willingness to adjust the identity, to say, ‘Yes, I want power, yes, I want Love’. (Perfecting today: Pluto trine Juno, Venus opposed Ceres and quincunx Saturn, Sun sesquiquadrate Pluto)

17 May we get some clues as to what might be disjointed about our ambition picture and plan, and though the mentality perceives things in a light that respects our highest values we may still be too reactive to the primal wound to make truly objective choices. Relationships and/ or the financial situation will not be of help, and may actually distract us or put us on what we’ll later consider ‘the wrong track’. The answer may be to wait to make any significant choices; currently our fears or the influences of others or our ongoing situation are too strongly felt to be removed from any equation, and so may exert more pull on our decisions than we realize. Have the courage to say, “I don’t know”, “Not yet”, and “We’ll see”. (Perfecting today: Pallas semi-square Zeus, Venus opposed Vesta, Mercury trine Vesta and square Chiron)

18 May we may feel highly inventive and original in areas of Love, relationships, or in ways to earn, but we resist sharing our ideas, and with good reason: those in power are listening, ‘ears to ground’, as they say, looking for an opportunity outside the current structure. Though that may seem like it offers the perfect chance for mutual benefit, the thing you need to know about those in charge is that they’re not looking for collaborators. Nurture your uniqueness, your ideas, and your ability to innovate in private, with an agenda of considering how you might alter the existing structure in a way that conveys the power directly to you. (Perfecting today: Venus square Jupiter and parallel Uranus, Mercury trine Ceres and quincunx Saturn, the Sun quincunx the North Node)

12 May we’re focused on empowerment and think we know just how to achieve this, but we can’t make our ideas work unless we are willing to modify our actions or approach so that it respects current power arrangements. Too, there’s some underlying antagonism in relationships and possibly over money that may interfere with choices/ taking action—our job is to keep a clear head, go forward in implementing our ideas, and to do so without knocking anyone else off their throne. There’s a Water Grand Trine of Earth-Jupiter-Chiron and a Mystic Rectangle of Sun-Jupiter-Earth-Pluto right now; both configurations amplify what’s currently available. With the GT, intuition is magnified in the arena of application of unique skills to material matters. We each have those specific, Chirotic abilities we were meant to discover, cultivate, and share–this is one of those windows of opportunity when we have the ability to apply those skills to our surroundings, in use of our assets, or in the material picture in such a way that the abilities themselves are much more powerful than they would otherwise be–such is the amplification available through the configuration. With the Rectangle, we are given the vision or knowledge necessary to give the Soul expression in some material form right now; this will likely be through a vocational outlet, something we’re called to do or moved to participate in at this time. Both configurations give us extraordinary ability to apply our talents–use and enjoy!

‘Summertime’ Mary Cassatt 1894 {{PD}}

3 May Love or Money hurts us today, but only if we refuse to use our most sensitive skills to deal with issues; then we kind of deserve it, don’t we, if we’re wounded out of sheer unwillingness to go out of our way to make it work? The messages we receive are at odds with what authorities tell us, what Mom wants us to believe (that’s likely the internalized mother we all carry), or what we’ve observed ourselves in Nature, and this can make for uncertainty and, in those so inclined, a tendency not to trust the Self. The reality is that if we’re open to Truth, we can see it and deal with things as they are—always the best way to meet the world—and the bonus is that if we’re willing to embrace ‘being ourselves’, whatever that means to you, a particular power and personal heft that comes with authenticity is available, as well. (Venus parallel Chiron, Mercury quincunx Ceres, Sun trine Pluto)

Almond Tree in Bloom by Van Gogh 1890 {{PD}}

Almond Tree in Bloom by Van Gogh 1890 {{PD}}

1 May personal empowerment comes through following instinctive prompts, or by digging deep to our primal inclinations. Relationships and finances figure in to life direction; with Venus in Pisces, we may be deluding ourselves that things are ideal when they’re not—or, we could be missing the true costs or rewards of pursuing our Path. We may see aggression (or at least assertion) work for others today, but don’t go there: it will have ugly consequences that we just don’t want to deal with. Just remember that the spotlight is on those who aggress, those who act precipitously, but that doesn’t mean that what they do is a good idea, or right. (Juno parallel Sedna, Venus quincunx the North Node, Sun quincunx Mars)

Today’s image is a small, misshapen apple tree, loaded with beautiful blossoms being nuzzled by countless bees. Often, we can’t know what’s going on below the surface; something can look completely unremarkable (even unfit) and yet produce an extraordinary abundance. There’s something in your life that you might be dismissing as ‘less than’ that could contain the capacity to generate an amazing bounty; take a second (or third, or fourth) look, and see what’s really there.

Post-Solar Eclipse 29 April 2014: The Wave

Are you feeling the afterglow of the Solar eclipse? Are you riding that Neptunian wave (for that was the only significant aspect made by the New Moon), or did the wave come crashing down on you? No matter what, it tossed matters of the natal House where the eclipse occurred, and none of them landed in the same place they’d been before. Most everyone I’ve spoken with is in some way disoriented; the surroundings (Taurus) have taken on a new character, with each individual trying in their own way to connect their ideals with their actual circumstances. This effort will likely reverberate through the coming six months, to the next eclipse set in October, as the Solar eclipse signals the ascendancy of the unconscious, the hidden, the longed-for, and that which meets our needs, in the areas of life represented by the natal House where the eclipse fell. The Lunar influence will be stronger in this House area than will the Solar one, making the subtle and the felt much more prominent than what we perceive with the conscious mind. The challenge may be to allow these normally hidden matters to arise, and then to recognize them as valid, rather than writing them off as coincident or extraneous; when Luna eclipses the Sun, we have a window into the unseen world, and this time, with the involvement of Neptune, we have the opportunity to draw on this and make of it what we will through the creative urge, the realization of ideals, through the power of imagination, and through the information provided in dreams, meditation, exploration of the spiritual, interaction with the Collective, and through the connections our creative faculties allow us to make among things we’re only now beginning to see as related.

Here’s what I said about today in ECLIPSE, concentrating on the post-eclipse atmosphere and the other influences in play:

29 April what we think or say may change everything; be very careful with communications—even thoughts will send out discernible ripples—don’t be surprised if others hear them! Attempts at empowerment may inadvertently wound, actions may be costly or foolish unless we stop and consider things first, and elemental urges (sex, aggression, Love) press us to ignore what’s wise. It’s a day when we may spend the entire time vacillating between being smart and acting out primal spontaneous wants. It’s just something we have to deal with—the best response may be to insist on using our best judgment, with the idea that incorrect thinking will lead to bad choices that will cause permanent effects. (Chiron semi-square Juno, Mars semi-square and Venus quincunx Pallas, Mercury trine Pluto)

'The Three Races or Equality before the Law' by Francisco Laso 1859 {{PD}}

‘The Three Races or Equality before the Law’ by Francisco Laso 1859 {{PD}}

26 April we look to the material world, to assets and talents and the sway money can exert on events, even as we are inspired by loftier things, ideals, dreams, and what we can imagine. This can be a set of aspects that allow excellent meshing of goals and aims with material needs and circumstances; we know what we need real-world to make our dreams happen. The one wild card is Nature (or for a few, authorities or even a maternal figure)—there are unanticipated costs and rewards available through the natural order or interaction with the natural world, and there’s no way to anticipate Nature’s role and its effects on our own efforts.

27 April It’s a great day to bring material dreams to reality, but only the ones involving hands-on or physically creative efforts—philosophical dreams or those based on intangibles will have to wait until thought processes are working on a clearer wavelength.

To see the complete forecast, get the Lunar Hour-by-Hour aspects and their meaning, the Daily Word Image, plus the Weekly with articles, please subscribe–it’s less than $7 per month!
