Jupiter Reverses, Mars Enters Leo: The Madness!

Jupiter, Mars

We may be feeling a little unhinged as of late, and I think I’ll lay blame at the feet of giant Jupiter as it retrogrades (the 9th at 3:57 AM PDT) and our little internal warrior Mars as it escapes Watery, touchy-feely Cancer for the bravura Fire of Leo (the 9th at 1:21 PM PDT). We’re stirred up yet short-circuited in our bid to keep getting bigger, in some vital way. Jupiter’s turnaround point forces a pause, and a reconsideration of just what we’ve been up to; and it always comes just when we feel we’re on the verge of that BIG breakout.

Why would the Universe orchestrate such a frustrating pattern? We get a clue in the way the Sun trines Jupiter just after retrograde–this points up that we have reached a reasonable peak relative to our efforts, and now must in some way re-visit our path to this moment, if not for revision then at least for time to truly assimilate what’s occurred. But what happens when, as we’ll see now, the ego and assertive urge undergoes its own ‘crisis’ as it moves from one sign to the next?

Mars is liable to burst forth as it hits Leo. Simultaneous to entry into the sign of the Lion, Mars will quincunx Pluto and then semi-sextile Saturn, and this influence will be felt! The urge to run forward will plunge us into some dark material, some of it by accident, some by design as we hope to erradicate problems and ‘clean it up.’ Saturn’s involvement may bring energies into reality more easily than we would typically anticipate–and then our Mars/ Pluto quincunx will be staring us right in the face–so what should we do, now that we have a chance to make real change?

My thought is that we can look to the House(s) Mars rules in the natal chart, and to Pluto’s natal state in general, for appropriate and effective outlets for this exuberant (and if not controlled, destructive) energy. Elimination of the negative, the encumbrance, the hurtful thing that’s been holding us back, is possible, and timed with Jupiter’s withdrawal of permission to expand indefinitely, implies a graceful intelligence at work in the Universe that prevents us from overdoing the destruction or elimination; instead Jupiter helps us avoid leaping over the brink, and saves us from devastating sturctures, relationships, and creations that we would never be able to recover.

The Long, Slow Effect: December’s Jupiter/ Pluto Conjunction

04 Sunday May 2008

Posted by juliedemboski in aspects and placements, astrology, Jupiter, Pluto

≈ Comments Off on The Long, Slow Effect: December’s Jupiter/ Pluto Conjunction

I thought a re-print of this in reference to current activity in the sky and our previous discussion of the Jupiter/ Pluto cycle might be of interest; it first appeared at Yahoo 360 December 12, 2007

For the last few days I’ve been looking into the real life effects of the last Jupiter/ Pluto conjunction as experienced by myself, and by friends, relatives, and clients. I wasn’t just curious about what to expect; I wanted to know about that most illusive of astrological subjects, timing. Did your Jupiter/ Pluto experience occur immediately, as the aspect perfected? Was it a single event or change, or did the transformation come over time? Was the change within, from without, or some of both? These were some of the questions I’ve been asking, and the answers for the most part were surprisingly consistent: it seems, rather than a big, splashy trauma, most people described the effects as spreading out from the point of the conjunction like ripples on water. Though the conjunction itself was fraught with tension, not much in terms of immediate change occurred; only later did the reverberations come in waves that pushed people to make major decisions or commitments, to decide life-altering or life-determining alternatives, and to go forward in ways that made for deep, permanent, and fundamental change in the way they view themselves. All this came from compelling inner energies interacting with the individual’s current circumstances. This is the most important part of what I heard: that the changes springing from this time were ones that shaped Self-concept in a major way–that we saw ourselves, our abilities, and what we are capable of in a new light; not necessarily what we’d expect from a textbook reading of transiting Jupiter and Pluto conjunct.

Last night I saw a movie again that I had seen many years ago when it first came out, and looking into the subject of the movie, I drew a possible connection to the Jupiter/ Pluto conjunction at 20 Cancer of late 1930 through mid-1931, with an orb lasting either side of these points. The movie, ‘Carrington,’ centered on a member of the Bloomsbury circle, painter Dora Carrington (born 29 March 1893, no time available, Hereford, England) and her relationships, particularly her interaction with live-in gay companion Lytton Strachey. Even by the open standards of their social circle, which preached acceptance of all sexuality and no jealousy, these two had an unusual relationship. Despite any number of lovers for either, each behaved as the partner of the other, with Dora clearly in denial of the lack of potential for a full physical relationship, right through to Lytton’s death January 21, 1932. Always in precarious health, Lytton Strachey hid the seriousness of his illness as long as possible, with it becoming evident in the period of Jupiter conjunct Pluto. The day he died Dora had transiting Neptune sextile Uranus, ruler of the 7th, quite literally dissolving the partnership; the conjunction had occurred in Dora’s 12th, perhaps compelling the need to eventually face up to the true domestic/ emotional state (Cancer) that she likely was aware of all along but hid from herself (12th House). Lytton’s illness and death triggered a long-brewing despair in Dora, who had been feeling more and more the outsider as others found relationships with those for whom they had a true passion, while it became more and more evident that she was missing something that she would never have with Lytton, despite their feelings for each other. After an unsuccessful suicide attempt (she was saved by her husband, who was in residence with his mistress), she finally succeeded in ending her life March 11, 1932. At her death transiting Neptune was conjunct her Moon exact, Jupiter was exactly trine natal Mercury, Saturn had just moved up above the Descendant and sextiled her natal Venus at 00 Aries (and this placement itself suggests a newness to her expression as a female that would have made rough going in a Mars ruled sign–in fact, she many times expressed a wish that she were a man). Though a terribly unhappy example, this is a version of the kind of major changes, both internal and external, that can emerge, sometimes only reaching fruition months down the line, with Jupiter/ Pluto.

In my own case, the Jupiter/ Pluto conjunction of 13 years ago brought major change for me with the purchase of our first house, the decision to look, choosing, and making an offer proceeding at lightning speed, with initial action coming about a month after the conjunction and huge change put in place (the actual move) less than a month after that. We ended a nomadic existence that had taken us across continents for the previous 10 years, changed our views of ourselves by becoming suburban dwellers, and setting the stage for enormous financial changes over the next year.

And in other news: I’ve noticed a few attempts to access Personal Page #1; this is password protected because the individual has arranged for an ongoing horoscope detailed to their natal chart, transits, and Solar Arc directions. Pluto

It seems that tremendous change, if not disaster, has come to everyone in one form or another. What gives? Weren’t all these Grand Trines supposed to bring earthly nirvana, wonderful bounty, and make it really easy to get what we want? Apparently not. Of course, I read trines as an ease in expression; I don’t necessarily see this as positive. So, I’m not surprised by the many traumas and major life developments all around me; I am surprised, shocked, even, by the extremity of the manifestations, by the sheer magnitude of the events. We’re not just seeing death in the vicinity, we’re seeing the life-altering death of parents or siblings or spouses; we’re not just seeing the loss of a job or position, we’re seeing the security and income of entire families wiped out; we’re not just seeing the disintegration or severing of relationships, we’re in the midst of bruising alterations of vital relationships, the kind we use as an emotional refuge, now gone from the face of the earth with a tsunami-like influx of change–but what’s really driving this?

The nature of the change shouts Pluto, and with it sitting at 00 Capricorn we may be seeing Pluto’s blunt introduction of what its time in Cap will really be like: paring everything it touches to the bone. Why didn’t this happen when it first entered Capricorn last winter? Possibly the effect was downgraded somewhat, particularly by the encounter of Pluto and Jupiter in December; that set up the origins of what’s occurring now, but so subtly that we didn’t take those tiny tremors for anything we couldn’t handle, and didn’t already have figured out. We met what came, adjusted, and felt we’d weathered the storm, patting ourselves on the back and thinking we’d come out of that with barely a nick–silly mortals!

As I mentioned in writing about this pairing at the time, this conjunction has the habit of triggering major changes that take some time to surface. Look back twelve years, and tell me there wasn’t a similar, irretrievable shift in your world then, too. The unfortunate part is that currently we are both extremely capable of handling these crises and even making the most of them, but we are also simultaneously incapable of discerning exactly where the correct path lies, and fear is a major factor here (Neptune, North Node, Chiron conjunct; Saturn conjunct the South Node; Mars quincunx Neptune/ North Node, Mars opposed Jupiter, for a touch of exaggeration!)

It reminds me of what was my basic theory of the situation on the show ‘Lost,’ before the story shot off in a thousand different directions: I thought each character was in a netherworld where they encountered their deepest, most secret fear; a fear of not being able to step up to the task or the challenge or the responsibility, to be honest, to walk away from the addiction, to keep someone important to you alive and safe, to love. I suspect that’s the mechanism here; we’re meeting a form of our worst fear, and we must call up from our best selves all that the situation requires.

What can we do to cope? Hang tight, and even if you’re a born pessimist, become both a realist and an optimist; the combination of clear seeing and faith in the positive is in my opinion the ticket out of this. I’m not talking about hope–that’s something we offer when we are able to, or intend to, do nothing–I’m talking about an attitude that trusts the Universal wisdom and the rightness of all things and pairs this with a willingness to do, to be inventive, to allow inspiration, quite literally, welcoming the Universal spirit, and  continuing to dream, to live, to become.

Taking a Bite Out of Heaven

health

Today was the last in a series of physical exams, tests, biopsies, and a minor surgery (last week–didn’t want to mention it until the results were back). I have been given a provisional clean bill of health (with future check-ups planned for, but no further treatment needed for the moment), which is certainly a relief. I just couldn’t resist a look at the chart for today’s meeting with the last in a long line of doctors (and I have to say, I’ve been led to some of the most delightful, skilled, and caring health care providers ever). No surprise, then, that the chart for the time of my meeting (the actual time, rather than the appointment time) showed the transiting Midheaven exactly conjunct my natal Moon, ruler of my 6th of health and job/ everyday activities. Transiting Uranus is also conjunct my Moon (and this was indeed a sudden health crisis with a relatively quick resolution–though I’m thinking the final ‘out of the woods’ period will come with the next eclipse set, as the crisis was set off by the one in February). Mars is within trine to my Moon, suggesting action in these matters as Mars moves through my 6th–it rules my intercepted 2nd, and this episode has had a decisive effect on how I see myself. Jupiter is sextile my Moon, and the knowledge imparted today about my status was both reassuring and widened my personal horizons–travel, learning, and ‘getting the word out’ are all still a part of the future for me (for a while, I wasn’t so sure they would be). And finally, transiting Chiron is semi-sextile the Moon, healing me physically (Moon ruling 6th) and emotionally.

This all brings to mind a cake we bought late last week, a wonderful coconut angel cake that was exactly like taking a bite out of heaven. Venus, planet of cake (or, ruler of pleasures, at least!) opposed my Sun and conjuncted my Earth last week from my 2nd–and I had to wonder, waiting for the biopsy results, just how much more earthly enjoyment I might be allowed. It seems I’m being given another chance, and I intend to revel in and appreciate it, to make the most of all the wonderful, delicious bits of my life. And I urge all of you to be conscious of, and to thoroughly enjoy, the ‘angel cake’ of your own life.

There’s one more thing I’d like to mention, chiefly because the idea of waking during surgery has been talked about quite a bit lately–and it happened to me! I was under, but lightly, and I think the pain of what was happening ‘broke through,’ and woke me up. I remember simultaneously feeling a horrible, burning pain and seeing myself, in a completely different position than I was in when I went under (which turned out to be the position I woke up in at the end), and the doctor working rather intently. I was speaking, saying how much it hurt, and I think it unnerved everyone in the room–and I recall the nurse telling me it didn’t hurt that much, trying to quiet me! On the day of the surgery Pallas and Mercury (ruler of my 8th of surgery) were exactly conjunct each other and exactly conjunct my natal Earth and opposed my Sun–a ‘wise’ time to operate, perhaps. The Moon was in Gemini and moving through my 4th, suggesting, along with Mercury, nerve vulnerability, that involved my deepest Self, quite literally!

It’s been an incredible journey for me, and one I’m grateful for, as I appreciate life with new eyes now. I met many wonderful, caring people along the way, and thank them, and so many of my readers, for the kindness and support they’ve shown. Now, we can get back to what’s important: astrology and cake!

Juno in Relationship

Juno, relationship astrology

While Juno in the individual chart speaks of Self-empowerment (for women) and the empowerment specifically of the anima (in men), it also plays a significant role in laying out the territory and feelings inherent to a partnership or mating scenario. Juno will interact in a very particular way that relates to the individuals involved, and can explain a great deal about our responses to certain people; why did he marry her, when they seem so disparate? His Juno conjuncts her Sun, her Juno squares his Mars. Do they fight? Likely yes, for just as Zeus and Juno entered a power struggle in perpetuity once the 300 year honeymoon was over, this pair is likely to do the same, as her sense of Self-empowerment particular to relationship confronts his sense of himself as a man, and his idea of ‘wifely’ behavior responds to the Soul essence of who she is (Sun), seeing her very much as a mate.

Juno shows up in other interactions, as well. The people who work together, have no romantic connection, but who bicker and spar like an old married couple may have a strong Juno link; likewise two females who share a ‘power arena’ may struggle for supremacy, even when one is clearly designated as having a dominant position (such as the boss).  Juno works to stir the desire for Self-empowerment even as it is scanning the horizon for a threat to its position; think of Juno repeatedly learning of the infidelity of her mate, and all the ways she tried to trick, capture, thwart, or discourage Zeus in this behavior.

A brief Juno power sketch is provided by looking at the charts of the late former President Ronald Reagan (6 February 1911, 4:16 AM, Tampico IL) and his second wife, Nancy (6 July 1921, 1:18 PM, Manhattan NY). Her Juno is conjunct his Capricorn Mars in his 1st, her 3rd–she could communicate through him, while he identified with her Self-empowerment–she may even have carried a bit of his animus for him, allowing the ‘aw shucks’ persona to play possum in terms of responsibility (think Iran-Contra) and power (and this is supported later, as you’ll see). His Juno conjuncted her North Node in Libra in his 10th, her 1st–could there be a more obvious signature for a ‘fated’ perception to the marriage, both as a personal destiny (her) or as a public and career destiny (him). His Juno/ Pluto trine shows just how seriously he saw his marriage as a boon to his power, and vice versa, while his Pluto conjunct her Mars, and her Pluto opposed his Mars, hint at the orgy of power and Self-interest that may have fueled them both. With seven of her placements falling in his 7th, he may have felt irretrievably drawn to her, particularly since many of these are conjunct his Neptune–could he see her clearly? Probably not. Her Neptune is conjunct his Earth and opposed his Sun, so she probably didn’t see him clearly, either, but she may have had the capacity to make him see himself as she idealized (or fantasized) him to be. A powerful set of contacts, where most of the power struggles were likely kept between them and centered on how he would express himself as a man (her Juno conjunct his Mars), and what would be effective to take her in her destined direction (his Juno conjunct her North Node).

More on Friendship: How Do I Look?

18 Tuesday Mar 2008

Posted by juliedemboski in aspects and placements, astrology

We can never directly observe ourselves; no matter how quickly we turn, trying to catch a glimpse of our profile in the mirror (this was a childhood goal of mine!) we are destined not to succeed. We cannot observe ourselves from within ourselves, and even seeing ourselves on film isn’t adequate to convey who we are and how we come across to others, as film is once removed, losing the perceptual aura that comes with immediacy, with being in the moment. The natal chart offers us many clues as to how others perceive us under various circumstances, but one of the most intriguing is that of friendship. These are unique interactions, simply because we truly do choose our friends; without the compulsions that come with being related, or thrown together by need or circumstance, we label others as friends on a completely voluntary basis. Because of this, our chosen friendships can say a great deal about who we are, and so, to know how we’re perceived can be exceptionally revealing of one’s ‘real’ interests and personality.

Since only the individual can declare just who they consider to be a friend, a very subjective designation, I thought it best to investigate this subject from the inside out, so I’ll use myself as an example. First I looked for commonalities among those I consider close, long-term friends, and found a startling one: to a person, they all carry the Sun within the first 15 degrees of the Cardinal signs. What sense does that make? I wondered, as I have Sagittarius on the empty 11th, and I know this to be a fairly accurate symbolism for the way others perceive me as a friend; informal ‘knowledge exchange’ is often a part of things, as are an interest in travel and other cultures, in religion and all kinds of ‘politics,’ and in exploring ‘new’ territory. Sag is ruled by Jupiter, and that’s when the oh-so-obvious connection was made: Jupiter is at 12 Libra, conjunct the Sun and Mars–one might say that, with the Sun emphasized on both sides of the equation, my friendships are Soul intent to Soul intent connections (Sun to Sun) that take a Sag perspective or approach, or have Sagittarian ‘ingredients.’ Jupiter also trines Chiron, is semi-square Venus, and sits just to one side of the Saturn/ Uranus midpoint; Jupiter also rules the 10th, perhaps implying that what you see publicly is what you get in a friendship, as well. The interesting thing is that I don’t identify myself with Sag energies at all; but I know from feedback that my friends do. Is this the case for you? Do you see yourself one way, but friends identify you another way? How does your 11th tie into the rest of your chart, and what conclusions do you draw from it?

Friendship in the Natal Chart

14 Friday Mar 2008

Posted by juliedemboski in aspects and placements, astrology

Traditionally, the 11th House of the natal chart is said to represent our friendships, those people to whom we aren’t related and with whom we experience a rapport at some point in our lives. I’ve come to think this is a too-simplistic definition; what about those with whom we share a sibling-like relationship? Do we find them in the 3rd? And what about a spouse (7th) or lover (5th) who may also be a friend? And the boss or work colleague, employee or person with whom we have a semi-formal relationship, like one’s doctor, teacher, religious or spiritual mentor, or anyone who holds some form of authority or power over us (9th or 10th), where do we find the relationship that can develop out of these contacts? I think we may be able to do some sorting; the 11th seems to refer to one’s attitude toward and within a friendship situation of any kind. Then we locate the ‘friend category’ relative to the House where their designation falls. For instance, if we have Taurus on the 11th, we likely approach friendship slowly, warming up to someone over time, but remaining loyal over a long period as we share luxuries and experiences of the senses such as cooking and gardening. But this may also express the way others see us when they regard us as a friend. This can mean that, in the instance with Taurus on the 11th, others may see Taurean traits as emblematic of us; when they describe us, they may have abandoned a first impression (1st), ‘Soul’ (Sun) view, or a view based on emotional connection (the Moon), in favor of a Taurus-oriented perception such as “He loves to eat!” or “She usually dresses in velvet.” When we look at the person who says this of us, we find him in the 3rd (he’s our brother), with Virgo on the 3rd cusp. How do Venus (ruler of Taurus) and Mercury (ruler of Virgo) mix? If they are conjunct we may be very close, then intensely combative, by turns; but if Venus is combust the Sun, and Mercury is not, we may see an attitude toward the relationship (and toward friendship in general) that says, “Yes, I like to share a good meal, but ultimately, my energy goes to my life purpose,” greatly reducing the likely importance (and the potential for depth and harmony) in the sibling relationship.

I’ll be back in a bit with some examples of how we can look at our charts to, at least to some extent, see what others see, and to talk about how our ideas of friendship may mesh with the way we see others through the lens of our own chart.

Some excellent reflections on friendship are at http://zenhabits.net/

What We’re Talking About, When We Talk About the Natal Chart

04 Tuesday Mar 2008

Posted by juliedemboski in aspects and placements, astrology

≈ Comments Off on What We’re Talking About, When We Talk About the Natal Chart

As an astrologer I’m continually confronted with the assertion that the natal placements prevent or cause a particular behavior. For instance, someone may say, “I’m not able to express myself freely; it’s my Mercury in Capricorn.” To this I want to shout (contrary to every extant stereotype of my Mercury in Libra), “No no no! Placements do not define or confine one’s behavior, they describe innate qualities.” In other words, planetary placements are symbolic of those traits inherent to who you are–and, as an astrologer, I would also suggest that they reveal facets of the Soul as they have evolved over time (or over lifetimes, if you prefer). So, one may not always have suffered the reticence of Mercury in Capricorn; but the accumulated experience particular to the individual has led the internal Mercurial tendencies to aggregate at this point as Capricornian ones.

When we think of our planetary placements as having evolved, we can see why a natal chart can be very difficult to read; there are always many possible manifestations of an energy, and these possibilities are compounded by the presence of aspects, which in turn have their own spectrum of possibilities. Yes, it can be a dizzying, endless kaleidoscope–but we can narrow the possibilities simply by looking at the aspects presented by any natal chart as they accumulate influences. For example, we may run across a chart that has many of the energies in difficult aspect to Saturn, and the initial inclination may be to state that this person is excessively repressed or severe; but when we see that Aries is on the ASC (promising at the very least an assertive temperament), and we then see that Saturn is in the sign of its exaltation (Libra), conjunct a Venus/ Sun also in Libra, all in the 7th, and with Uranus sextile Saturn, we may have to reassess our assumptions–we may entertain the possibility that this is an entity who invents or builds beautiful things, who has a kind of spiritual investment in bringing beauty into material being, perhaps in a stylish and innovative way, and that this person may in fact by a very successful and capable businessperson or ‘builder’ in one way or another. But are these things dictated by the chart? No, they merely reflect what is innate–it’s up to us to shape and form them–that’s why relating the life circumstances to the chart, while frowned upon by those who see astrology as a parlor trick meant to astound, is vital to both a correct interpretation and to offering the client useful and accurate information.

Let’s look at a single character trait (as much as we’re able to separate the character into slices and bits), the power urge, through its obvious manifestation in Pluto.  Our subject is a woman, whose birth time is fairly well established (Rodden rating of B). Pluto sits in Libra in the 7th, rules the 8th and 9th, with the Earth and Uranus in Scorpio in the 8th. Pluto’s aspects are: a square to Juno and one to Jupiter (rules the MC), making it the arm of a T-square; a trine to Neptune (rules intercepted 1st); and a pair of inconjuncts to an exact sextile between Mars (rules second interception in the 1st) and Saturn (rules 11th and 12th), making this Pluto the apex of a Finger of God vis a vis Mars and Saturn. With Pluto in the 7th and in Libra a natural power outlet might come through marriage, and for this woman that is indeed the case; it also suggests that one’s power may be ‘on stage’ or observed by a form of ‘audience.’ This might immediately cause us to characterize this woman as ‘power hungry,’ or as one who married for power by proxy, or for status (square to Jupiter, MC ruler). But, when we look further, we might realize that could be an unfair assessment: the relationship to Mars/ Saturn says that both action and restraint are required in order to realize Pluto, a tough balancing act–this configuration also suggests that development of assertion/ action/ ego and Self-discipline and regard for effort and the status quo (Saturn) is required before personal power can be exercised (the FOG configuration). So, she’s likely to attain power only through personal discipline, in spite of the position conferred by marriage, and this is reinforced by the square to Juno, indicator of personal empowerment, particularly for women. What, then, of the trine to Neptune? We might assume a certain facet of delusion, or the tendency to delude others, with this as intercepted ruler of the 1st–but when we consider to whom this chart belongs, some things ‘pop into’ perspective, and the meaning of others becomes startlingly apparent. This chart belongs to Empress Catherine (the Great) of Russia (May 2, 1729, 2:30 AM LMT, Stettin, Germany), who came to power through marriage to Peter III of Russia, who ultimately went mad, with Catherine needing to ‘take the reins’ to prevent the country’s fall into chaos. She needed the support of the people (8th rulership, square to society-Jupiter) to be successful running a country of which she was not a native, though Pluto’s rulership of the 9th made her a natural to express power somewhere other than her homeland, and likely cued her acceptance. She did a great deal to modernize the country (Aquarius ASC and North Node), though some of her decrees (such as the order that officers in her army were no longer to go to bed wearing their boots) only served to show how far behind Europe Russia was at that point. The most interesting manifestation, though, is the trine to Neptune; Catherine was willing to deceive herself as she aged, allowing a series of lovers to fool her in one way or another, with the most famous being Potemkin, whose name is still used to suggest a facade meant to deceive; he had entire fake villages and towns, consisting of false fronts and peasants in finery, erected along the routes Catherine traveled, in order to persuade her he was doing a good job and that the country was prospering. Without context, the relationship to power shown in this chart wouldn’t be half as meaningful; and we must remember, too, that, as for all of us, Catherine displayed nothing in life that didn’t have a corollary within the chart.
