The AstroEssence: One reason I don’t usually single out aspects, especially ‘heavy’ ones (between slow-moving outer planets) is that they don’t happen in a vacuum; the tendency to read things separately is what makes for discordant or contradictory readings, though admittedly, it is the way to learn about contact effects. It’s not that there aren’t often opposing forces and flows in play, it’s more like without a whole picture orientation, we can’t really see how that aspect may be buffeted and shaped by the other aspects in effect–and that’s not even taking into account the way it may or may not affect the individual landscape through the natal chart.

So, we see the final perfection of the Saturn-Neptune square today, with this suggesting, in the most general terms, a culmination, ending, completion, materialization, manifestation, or boundary (though we can’t discount the possibility that Saturn in this instance simply means ‘time’, the passage of which has reached a particular point of conflict with the Neptunian factor) with a fantasy, creative idea or impulse, a deception, an illusion, a dream, or of an ideal, reached through a clash, conflict, or the advent of a contrast or pressure point that brings the problem nature of the thing into full view.

The thing is that today’s square may be a repeat of already addressed situations or problems, or may be yet another version of these energies in conflict, and so may not be recognized for what it is. Too, we may believe we know what to look for, though it often takes some hindsight to spot the actual (as in this case) impediment (Saturn) causing hesitation or denying access to the dream or ideal (Neptune); that is, we may think in the moment we know what’s stopping us, but be blind to the true cause (Neptune obscuring Saturn). This is in part an effect of that singling-out tendency: though it makes things fall into neat categories, it does not show us the full picture.

What’s the full picture for today, then? It involves thought processes that must adjust to what’s actually wise, rather than just to what we perceive as smart–and that takes a willingness to step out of the crowd, to let go of the belief that we know, and to refuse to dwell in hurt of any kind. It also asks us to see that acknowledging all parts of our life, especially those we have lately ignored or denied, is the healthiest thing we can do, as is acknowledging any anger we carry, particularly over any disrespect we feel we’ve suffered–and this last point, disrespect, must be recognized as something of a code word with some people–be sure you’ve actually been disrespected (not treated as an equal, and a human being) before you mistakenly use this word to characterize a difference of opinion, asked-for advice, or a warning, when it turns out to be other than you want to hear (Hygeia parallel Black Moon Lilith, Saturn sq Neptune, Mercury qnx Pallas, contra-parallel Jupiter, and opp Chiron)

Damian Shibniov 1906 'Versailles' {{PD}}

Damian Shibniov 1906 ‘Versailles’ {{PD}}

Today’s word image is Versailles. This could mean a lot of things, though those that stand out to me are the place as a symbol of a pinnacle of Self-indulgence as a lifestyle, and that it has a hall of mirrors–so is today’s image about (over) indulgence, or about taking a look at ourselves? Your choice.

For those born with the Sun at 18 Virgo: you may take action this year, Virgo, because of what you learn or know; this may spring out of priorities and commitments, but will be propelled by emotions, and the feeling nature will reach out periodically and re-shape the direction you’re headed. You may come across as too head-strong, too impulsive, and too much out for your own good and goals–but if you don’t do ‘it’ for yourself, who will? No guilt, no hesitation–and anybody who tries to take you there may need to step aside, at least temporarily. Good luck, and Happy Birthday!

If you come here often, please consider supporting the blog. Thank you!

Your Weekend 18-19 June 2016 The Dream Dissolved, or Made Real

Dante Gabriel Rossetti: Beata Beatrix, ca 1864-70 {{PD}}

Dante Gabriel Rossetti: Beata Beatrix, ca 1864-70 {{PD}}

The worst thing is that, if our response to Friday’s influences (especially that lingering pressure of the Saturn-Neptune square) isn’t thoroughly processed, we may end up taking actions or making choices that are at least very serious, in terms of their implications or repercussions, and possibly devastatingly destructive–and this may lead to a mindset that is disconnected in important ways from the reality picture. Our choice of whether to allow a dream to dissolve, or to move on giving it form and structure, is not the determining factor–neither choice is superior–the whole thing rests on whether we actually make a choice. We may think we have time to ponder, or that we can take a more passive stance and the ‘right’ thing will simply come into being, but that is abdication of the very power that we must embrace in order to use Saturn-Neptune in the most positive way–and in abdicating our power, we invite external sources of power, in the form of others and their Will, or the impulses of chaos and helplessness, to wreak havoc, or at least really really mess things up.

Suffrage_universelIf we have accepted that challenge to make a definitive statement around the dream, a Yea or Nay to going forward, then our weekend will be pleasant and possibly mildly eventful, with a few surprises, a revelation or two about our own egos and values, and a resulting placidity of mind that reflects a sense of all right within our world (no matter what’s happening on the rest of the globe). If we have failed to take a specific direction, we may find that circumstances offer empowerment, but only at the price of seriously distorting our values and priorities, and/ or that the group or ‘being unique’ may ask some very uncomfortable things of us that violate our own precepts or world view. Peace requires acknowledgment of and engagement with reality (that is, the agreed-upon common reality)–everything else breeds discord, and attracts ‘accident’.

Evelyn de Morgan – ‘Phosphorus and Hesperus’, (1881) {{PD}}

I’ve noticed lately that individuals seem to be Self-separating into the two facets of the square: there are those who are dealing very effectively with reality (and having serious, concrete successes because of this) and those who are not, with the range from totally delusional to a troublesome lack of perspective on the Self and the world. If you are currently mired in disappointed hopes, are finding the world wrong and yourself right, or lamenting either how misunderstood you are or how foolish everyone else is, you may be wrapped tightly in the Neptunian side of the equation; if you are acknowledging your fears, the harshness (and joys!) of the world, and are doing something about them, then you are embracing the Saturnian side of things–and right now, getting down with Saturn is the most productive place to be (Vesta sesq Juno, Mars parallel Pluto and qnx Uranus, Mercury semi-sq Uranus and contra-parallel Saturn)

Saturday’s word image is a billiard ball. An odd thing, as on its own it’s really meaningless–it’s only when you have a table and cues and many other balls that this item gains real meaning. Maybe this is a reminder that ourselves and our lives are simply part of a much larger ‘game’, urging modesty in assessing our impact or judging the importance of other components. Or maybe it’s an admonition to take those Saturnian steps, to assemble what’s needed to create meaningful play–which is what occurs when we combine Saturn and Neptune in appropriate ways.

Sunday’s word image is the ghost in the machine. What’s haunting you? Or is it some energy that seems to infest an effort or a process that should be easily controlled? Or is this something within the mentality that’s exerting an unwanted effect? Whatever form it takes, what does it tell you must be acknowledged, before your ‘machine’ will be ghost-free?

Have a wonderful, ghost-free weekend!

We can and will take that title in one of two ways: either we will give up on a dream, goal, ideal, or plan (that is, box it up for later, or to ‘give away’ for good), or we will box one of those up as one does when purchasing to take something home. So, we will abandon, or completely buy into as well as create a form and structure for, something we’ve long contemplated or had our sights on.

If we buy in, we likely spend now through mid-August researching, learning, reaching out, and giving form to the dream, preparing it for its reveal to the world; if we abandon it, we may do so intending to pursue it later, or with the belief that this particular dream is dead, no longer a fit for our lives. If the latter, we’ll probably see how unreasonably restrictive, harsh, or oppressive the conditions surrounding making that dream a reality–and even if we’re unsure, if that’s what we’re seeing, that’s our clue it’s best abandoned, at least for now.

Which of these attitudes we embrace rests firmly on our own assessment of our personal wisdom and strength. At this time our thoughts and mentality are true to who we are, and we desire empowerment simply because we care, and want to do something about those situations important to us. So, success rests with our own confidence in ourselves, with a feeling that our mentality has a clear grasp on issues and options, and with the sense that we can trust ourselves to make choices that follow our deepest values and ideals (Perfecting today: Ceres at the midpoint of Mercury-Pallas sq; Merc is also parallel Vesta, Saturn sq Neptune, Venus enters Cancers and trines Juno)

Today’s word image is a globe with many countries colored a bright red. If you come here often you’re probably thinking, there’s that red again! But some kind of irritating, aggressive, pugnacious, inflammatory element does seem to be in the air, doesn’t it? Let’s take this as a cue to consciously take our own assertive energies down a notch, to intentionally refuse to aggress, to instead flood the atmosphere with gentle light, with the essence of acceptance (that’s what we all really want for ourselves, isn’t it?), to offer the Universe something bright and clear to fill and overcome the anger and the dark. And to W. K., who will probably now write me a scathing note, I want him to know that his comments have been for some time routed to spam–I don’t even read them anymore, and ask that he keep his gift of venom for himself–and if you also have someone who has targeted you as the recipient of their anger, you should do the same.

Have a lovely, and peaceful, Friday.

13 June 2016 Focus On: Neptune Retrograde + Revealing Words

Of course, our old friend Neptune has been virtually motionless late in the 11th degree and early in the 12th of Pisces for some time now; we may have worked this energy and its impact into our own chart through its contacts (or lack of them, isolating this massive dose of inspiration, confusion, spiritual enlightenment, and energy-suckage in matters of the House its transiting), and convinced ourselves things may always stay that way. The retrograde point of something so sluggish as Neptune may resemble the slow-turn of a heavy stone wheel: it’s moving almost imperceptibly, grinding down what it touches, compressing that point and those natal bodies it forms major aspects to in such a way that the alteration in direction brings no relief, and little hope for change. Instead it threatens to take the slow-grind over territory we thought we’d already dealt with, and give the matter another layer of grist, so to speak, grinding away at new aspects of the same old subjects.

So, we shouldn’t expect immediate results from the retro–what we most likely feel is the return of something we thought we’d just dealt with a minute ago–and now we see it with the Neptunian influence withdrawn or changed somehow. We may question or re-examine our spirituality, our creative efforts or urges, may become confused to the point of do-overs, or just unable to navigate with any confidence. We could also see the imagination, spiritual efforts, or creative talents freed of their conventional Neptunian ‘beliefs’; that means that how we see and define those areas might get the chance for permanent alteration, should we decide to explore, experiment, or feel our way through the fog.

Neptune, Saturn, Vesta, and Jupiter are still forming a Grand Cross, and with Neptune’s retrograde we may apply those creative changes to the reality picture, the social role, and/ or to those causes we dedicate ourselves to, or to the home or mate. The shift in direction of Neptune offers us a new way to see all or part of the energy involved in the Grand Cross, and so to address it more accurately through the beliefs, the spirituality, or the creativity.

We also have a Fist of God with apex Mercury and base of Zeus-Pluto, with the impact continuing for a couple of days. This suggests that concerns surrounding power and desire combine, possibly through conflicts that arise, or that naturally exist between those power needs and the ambition/ desire picture, and fill the mind, the communications, and those things that are communicated by others. It may be an unavoidable free-for-all as no one will be terribly successful at keeping what they want, and how much reach they wish to have, under wraps. Brace yourself to hear some surprising power wants–and some even more surprising lusts, desires, and goals. The only ones who come out of this without revealing themselves are silent and invisible. A square of Venus to Chiron says this might hurt, especially in the way it reveals things about our relationships, and Venus quincunx Mars says we are vulnerable to awkward acting out or poor decisions that could jeopardize our assets, if we’re not careful.

Today’s word image is a red suit. A suit is something we ‘put on’, and red suggests energy and possibly power or influence. In what way are we perhaps pretending we have more power or ability or energy to handle things than we really do? We may think we have to wear this suit when we really don’t–if we can just admit the true situation.

Focus on: Saturn square Neptune

'Le Reve' (The Dream)-Puvis de Chavannes-Orsay 1882 {{PD}}

‘Le Reve’ (The Dream)-Puvis de Chavannes-Orsay 1882 {{PD}}

Our vision, our dream, is in conflict with reality right now, but even if our gaze is firmly fixed on real-life and What Is, we are unable to perceive it with any accuracy. This is the premise from which we must begin our musings; it seems, though, we are prone to do the opposite, to make up our minds about reality, to judge it according to the things we imagine are true, and to treat that as Truth. If we’re aware of this tendency, we might be more prone to making fewer pronouncements about what will happen, or about what we or others should or shouldn’t do.

This can be our best use of the energies: knowing that lies, illusion, fantasy, or idealization overlays our perception of reality, and that barriers, boundaries, rules, and a ‘lack’ mentality may infect our dreams, our ideals, and our creative urge. ‘What Is’ may seem untenable, insurmountable, or far different than it really is. We should be glad of this dissonance; it forces us to move more slowly, to look with more care, and it urges us to wait for facts, and then to examine those thoroughly and with caution, aware that these may distort the picture or hide something important. ‘Seeing Is Believing’ may be the sum of this aspect, and yet it’s exactly what we shouldn’t do.

We can be inspired by what we perceive about the world at this time, but we can’t take that inspiration at face value; there is too much ephemeral, hidden, or just plain false in our awareness of reality. We may have some luck by willingly putting boundaries on our dreams–that brings the energy of the square under our control (Saturn) and so means we can shape the dream (Neptune) within parameters (Saturn) we choose. Currently Neptune is poised to go direct and sit stationary for enough time to allow Saturn to catch up and complete the square on the 26th. They stay within orb through roughly late December, but again do a long slow dance starting mid-2016.

I wanted to add this: It occurs to me there’s another possibility: that through something difficult (the square) we get the real facts about some matter that has been confusing, impossible to understand, or obscured in some fashion. As always, there are a thousand ways to read aspects–that’s just another!

Outlook for the 17th is in the previous post. Thanks!
