Not quite the meeting of the Sun and Mercury. ‘Meeting of Abraham and Melchisedek’ By Dieric Bouts,the older c1466 {{PD}}

You can feel the ambition flowing through you today, can’t you? You may label it something else: restlessness, desire, passion, ants-in-the-pants, but in any case, you want to make the best situation for yourself possible–that’s what ambition really is–with the agitation caused by some slight discrepancy between the idea of our personal values that inform our Self-image, and the change to that Self-image that will be undeniable if we fulfill that ambition. How to balance that out, take advantage of the forward momentum without hurtling off the cliff? Concentrate on pursuing what’s original (for you) and unique–that is, that thing that’s having its moment right now, and that you are in the perfect position to exploit/ express; pay due tribute (but no more than that) to those in power–that brings gain; and make sure that choices, actions, ‘moves’ clearly reflect the reality situation–it’s not a day to launch projects on a whim or that are rooted in the fantastical. Take care with what you put in motion right now, as the Inferior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury brings a kind of life-generating power to ideas and starts–and that can mean that even the most casual step forward may have more seed-power than you ever think it could.

(Vesta qnx and parallel Zeus, Uranus nov Vesta, Mars trine Saturn, Venus parallel Ceres, Sun and Mercury trine NN as they meet in Inferior Conjunction)

By Jahn Henne. – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://comons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=34513742

Today’s word image is a black cat. Does it make you think of Halloween (a time when strangers can knock on stranger’s doors and ask for candy, and no one thinks it’s weird), or maybe how they’re thought to be handing out a kind of curse as they cross one’s path, does this bring a favorite real-life cat, someone you know who loves cats, a storybook one (the infamous ‘Midnight’ from my first reader!), or does it just remind you of your allergies, your dislike of cats/ preference for dogs, or do you feel an annoyed twitch thinking of how they own the internet? This is one of those very personal symbols, evoking a very personal response.

For those born with the Sun at 24 Pisces (check your natal chart for your Sun degree!) Your new Solar year starts out STRESS-FUL, but don’t worry–this is to your advantage, as this pressure cooker acts to propel forward something new and well-thought-out–even though you won’t immediately know what’s started or where it comes from! It makes the year one of longer-term gestation, with some idea or beginning growing from a spark to a significant enterprise–so, be highly conscious of what you nurture now, as it WILL grow, in spite of any confusion about its origins. You’re setting the course of your life now, and the best thing you can do is be fastidious with your investment of time, attention, energy, money, love, effort, and creativity. It’s no time to mess around.

13 March 2019 Change, And A Hard Choice

Just think about it. ‘Portrait einer Venezianerin’ (Protrait of a Venetian woman, By Anselm Feuerbach 1855-56 {{PD}}

Change (or is it transformation?) is all around us today, and this either offers opportunities or knowledge–and then forces a hard choice. What benefits us? Clear thinking, and acknowledgment that it’s a fine balance between feeling empowered, in charge of your own life, and what’s wise, practical, just plain smart. Sometimes the wise thing is to ask for help, to turn down the opportunity, to choose not to exercise your power. Look at what (and in whom) you have real faith, before making a choice; though it may seem unconnected, please consider: the trust you put in the Universe may be commensurate with how much you can trust yourself.

(Pallas sesq Juno and semi-sq Ceres, Merc nov Venus, Sun sxt Pluto and sq Jupiter)

Today’s word image is this: pick an Archetype, any Archetype, whose qualities you believe would help get you through today, if you could access them–and then think of that Archetype as ‘backing you up’–hovering behind you, supporting, offering their own particular special strength. And then go through your day, extra confident, supported, feeling capable, no matter what. I get the feeling we’re all going to need this exercise, sooner rather than later.

Setting the table for your year ahead. Art by Peter Ilsted {{PD}}

For those born with the Sun at 23 Pisces (check your natal chart for your Sun degree!): It’s a year of difficult emotional choices presented by opportunity, by abundance, by educational or religion-related developments that say to you, ‘Okay, here’s the profit, knowledge, and chances you asked for–doesn’t feel so good, does it?’ The pain is rooted in the feeling nature and in the effect of such opportunities on relationships; you never anticipated that getting the chance to have or do what you wanted would be so hard on your interactions with others–but it is, and that may be mostly or even entirely because you changed when you got what you wanted. This is a year-long ‘lesson’, but if your responses are heartfelt and honest, you’ll reach your next birthday considerably richer in several ways that count.

Hey! Read a book! And if you’ve already read one, please offer a review at GoodReads. Thanks!

12 March 2019 Resisting

Japan, late 19th-early 20th century – Embroidered and Resist-Dyed Fabric – 1916.1325 – Cleveland Museum of Art CC0

Why is it today that the only way we feel empowered is to resist what those we see as holding some authority tell us to do? Is it a kind of jealousy, born out of the secret fear that we are, in reality, helpless? Or is it that we resist because there is a hurt that disfigures our identity, one that we have yet to drag out into the light? If we find ourselves responding to others or circumstances this way, resentfully, even petulantly, we need to take a step back, and listen to the unadulterated inner voice, the one that speaks to us as instinct, the one that delivers to us what we ‘know but don’t know’ in times of stress. We need to understand that our discomfort is within us, it’s our own, not the fault of any external entity–and that means that in order to maneuver successfully, we must resolve to act, rather than respond, to be proactive, rather than carried along by the currents of the unconscious. Don’t resist, choose.

(Juno opp Ceres, Mercury sxt Sedna, Sun contra-parallel Chiron)

‘Camp Fire’ By Winslow Homer -1880 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is: you are alone, at night, camping out under the stars. I really like being out at night because, looking up at the sky, you can almost feel the Earth turning beneath your feet. Do you ever go out and look up? Do you ever sleep outside? Have you ever spent the night alone in the wilds? What’s your relationship to the night sky? Do you respond differently to being outside at night, and outside in the daytime? If you avoid being out alone at night, is there a reason? Indifference? Fear? Do you have strong feelings, either positive or negative, around camping or being out in nature over night? How do you think you’d feel, if you lived that way all the time?

Setting the table for your year ahead. Art by Peter Ilsted {{PD}}

For those born with the Sun at 22 Pisces (check your natal chart for your Sun degree!): Your song for this year: ‘Changes’ by Bowie. What seems like a hard knock, a bad break, a loss, will end up being for the better–you’ll just have to give it some time. Expect change, change, and a little more change–but if you want to take circumstances in hand, want to shape things as you’d like, you need to accept your own power to transform, and then meet each event, whether it takes you forward or sets you back, as something you have orchestrated–which automatically makes it something you can change, should you want to. So, it’s really about taking a mindset that sees no limits to your influence, while at the same time not overreacting to more temporary situations, demands, or setbacks that crop up along the path. The opportunities that will come may take some time getting here, or taking shape, but they’ll be worth the wait.

11 March 2019 The Perqs of Power

We’ll know the perqs of power, maybe collect them, benefiting ourselves, but we’ll also see the ways in which having privilege messes with your head and possibly re-shapes what we otherwise know to be smart. Having an advantage in anything may distort our thinking, our value system, even what we find sacred–and we may meet this in others, as well, with the effect that the relationship will never quite be the same, at least, not for some time. We can solidly benefit, today, in arenas where our authority and ‘voice’ are established and recognized–just don’t let what we might gain pull what’s important to us out of shape.

(Vesta contra-parallel Pallas, Venus sxt Ceres, Mercury semi-sq Venus)

Today’s word image is this: someone, used to wielding power and a position of authority, finds they are unhappy once they’ve left their lofty perch, so others scramble to nominate them to a place that will ‘feed’ what the ego misses. Is this a good thing, to provide someone with a ‘power path’ simply because they are dissatisfied without their usual reach and influence? Or is a beast being fed, one that may need to understand that every position is needed, and that not all of them make one ‘in charge’? Consider what parts of you expect to have power, and what the appropriate response might be if you lose that. And if you’re someone who is trying to placate someone else, consider they may need to figure out a path toward satisfaction on their own.

Setting the table for your year ahead. Art by Peter Ilsted {{PD}}

For those born with the Sun at 21 Pisces (check your natal chart for your Sun degree!): This Solar year, through to your next birthday, looks largely like a time of emotional comfort, of enjoyment of a kind of security that’s rare, and from this you’ll find the energy, time, and attention to pursue goals, go after ambitions, fulfill dreams, and to acquire those things you desire. It almost sounds leisurely, doesn’t it? It can be a smooth path or a bumpy one, but in either case, will see opportunity and inevitable change. Your job is to be ready: to travel or accept the exotic or unusual, if it takes you closer to your aims; to discard the structures, strictures, or frameworks that may have been highly supportive up to now, if they no longer serve; and to be willing to learn–no one’s ever too old or too jaded to attain new skills, or to find out more about the world and how it works.

‘Peasant Girl Before a Shrine’ By Antoni Kozakiewicz 1895 {{PD}}

We see evidence of our commitments, our duties, our priorities, and our fulfillment of these in real-world form; we see how we are empowered via our highest values, and the ways in which we’ve chosen to fill our lives with what matters to us. We should be proud of our innovations, our originality, our follow-through–so what is it that’s making us so squirrely? We may be just a tad misled in our actions, likely through some long-forgotten hurt that winkles our thoughts and messes with our usual wise and practical judgment–and this in turn leads us to scuttle some ambition or want, out of a sense it’s out of reach, or even pushes us into baiting our opposite number or acting out, for no reason other than pique. Take a step back, give the correct respect to the correct entity, including oneself, and know that it’s in your very uniqueness and adherence to a spiritual set of values that your strength lives, and your path ahead is clear.

C.I. Pigment Red 207, a mixed crystal phase of quinacridone and 4,11-Dichloroquinacridone, By Hardcoreraveman {{PD}}

Today’s word image is the color red. Of course, we equate the color with anger, astrologically with Mars, but let’s look a little deeper. This color has been shown to have a stimulating effect though we’re not consciously aware of it; that’s why so many restaurants feature red in their decor, to encourage appetite. Is there something that you’re not quite aware of, that may be stimulating some response in you? Something creating an ‘appetite’ that you don’t yet recognize? And in what way will that influence send you beyond conscious wants and parameters?

Setting the table for your year ahead. Art by Peter Ilsted {{PD}}

For those born with the Sun at 20 Pisces (check your natal chart for your Sun degree!): This year, through to your next birthday, you may need to concentrate on honing ambitions, desires, and the plans that support them, and may specifically need to solidify or even seek out supportive networks, frameworks, and partners who will also gain and so will be more than willing to help you succeed. Part of what may be slowing your progress is trying to make too many square pegs fit round holes, symbolically speaking; recognition of the true inclinations of those around you, as well as how effectively you’re actually addressing things is vital to making the whole life work better this year–that’s the overall goal.

‘In Danger’ By Hendrik Willem Mesdag c1895 {{PD}}

Have you ever been descending steps and hesitated, suddenly unsure of the step’s depth or placement, suddenly fearing you’re going to take a tumble? That’s today: the startle at a shadow that wasn’t there a moment ago, a breeze coming out of nowhere that chills, reaching into a dark closet or entering a darkened hallway and suddenly thinking better of it. Instincts are speaking in a primal voice, but are they an embedded form of intuition, or a reflexive leftover from a more threatening time? Here’s your answer: there’s wisdom in those instincts, even if what they prompt you to do seems impractical, or gets in the way of what you want. Follow them anyway, because the reality is, there’s danger, out there.

(Pallas parallel Sedna and contra-parallel Zeus, Saturn parallel Pluto)

Snowflake Waltz in the White Forest (The Nutcracker Act I, Scene III) performed by The New York City Ballet Photo By Fred Fehl, Dance Magazine April 1954

Today’s daily word image is snow, long after the thought of it has passed. What out of season thing is occurring in your life right now that may be hard to believe, but that you need to accept and then act appropriately on? This kind of event can catch us off guard, and make us slow to react–now is not the time for either. Whatever it is, it’s time isn’t over, yet.

Setting the table for your year ahead. Art by Peter Ilsted {{PD}}

For those born with the Sun at 19 Pisces (check your natal chart for your Sun degree!): You’re very sure of your values and those things and people worthy of your commitment to them–aren’t you? It’s Go Time, a time when ambitions can be served, the Fate shaped, and if you aren’t ready–do your best, anyway, because energies are moving headlong right now, and that happens whether you try to direct them or not. So, get yourself together however you can and go for it! Some parameters: you don’t have to act immediately–take time to plan and review; emotions may be very Self-centered right now–but that’s okay, it’s the way it should be, and those who love you will understand; and be aware that all this is in preparation for big, life-changing opportunities and events that come late in your Solar year (that is, between now and your next birthday), so take the long view. With that in mind, get out there and get your ducks in a row.

20 February 2019 Hell-Bent On Change

‘The Motorist’ By Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1898 {{PD}}

Instinctual or reflexive drives are strong and yet we need to be aware they’re tuned to the past, not the present, and as such they don’t serve current impulses but instead draw on blind spots and those things we know but don’t acknowledge–which can be fortuitous, if that knowledge keeps us away from something negative, or can lead us straight into a quagmire of our own making. These instinctive drives are a vital part of the equation needed to make the changes we are hell-bent on making right now, because if we abandon ourselves to impulsiveness or arbitrary action (which is the temptation, should we reject our instincts) we come up with precarious situations in need of fixing that deposit us way off our targets. Embrace change wholeheartedly, but at the same time insist on standards of what’s wise, what’s practical, to measure those changes against. Allow that instinctual input, but run it through that inner filter that tells us whether an option is smart, or not–that’s bound to steer us toward healthier methods of realizing ambitions, as well as toward using only the best the past has to offer.

Setting the table for your year ahead. Art by Peter Ilsted {{PD}}

Happy Solar Return to those born with the Sun at 01 Pisces! (see your birth chart for your Sun degree!) You may be too conscious of emotional wounds at this point to effectively see the forest for the trees, but it won’t be long before you can let go of a sort of critical fog into which you’ve fallen, and instead deal with real-world problems and obstacles that have plagued you for some time. It doesn’t sound exciting, but it actually is: you’re right now in a position to make some truly perfect plans, the kind that make for sure-fire progress–and once you’re in motion, you’ll find out how empowered you actually are (that’s much more than you think), and how recent, hurtful experiences have set the stage for a new sense of Self, a new confidence, and a more realistic and worldly viewpoint, that will make new efforts, starting just over a month from now, really soar.

The Daily Word Image is a hole in the floor. This is going to make each person think of something different; I recall an old Volkswagen (The People’s Car!) I had years ago, which somehow developed a hole right through the floor on the passenger side. It was a scary, thrilling sensation that looking through that hole as I sped along the freeway gave me–I can still feel it even now–so for me this is a symbol of something a little bit dangerous seeming that isn’t any more dangerous than it ever was, it’s just more visible, more conscious. It was always a risk to drive such a tin-can like vehicle! It was only that, suddenly, I could see how rickety everything really was. So, what’s it mean for you?

Ambrosius Bosschaert 1614 {{PD}}

What is it about today that makes us want to act, all willy-nilly, in ways we know are impractical or unwise? We believe there are secrets to be discovered, bounty to be gained, and that answers may lie in the past–but what we need to see is that we are prone to treating ‘the word’ (whether that’s what’s been communicated, one’s faith, a promise given, or a thought we’ve defined as Truth) as sacred, and that puts us in a precarious position, as taking ‘the word’ as supreme puts us at odds with those in authority (who might otherwise help), alienates us from our own uniqueness and most original urges and ideas, and makes it incredibly difficult to pursue our ambitions and desires. So why do we elevate a thought, word, concept, or promise? We are convinced that’s where salvation lies, in connecting to the sacred within the idea. We’re mistaken, that’s all; we’re trying to particularize the general, as it’s a lot easier to see one thing as sacred, rather than seeing the sacred in all, and so having to behave with care in all things. Use the influence to see the sacred in the mundane, the every day, in each thing that comes before us; use the energy to acknowledge the sacred found everywhere and in every thing, rather than trying to invest the Universe in one ordinary comment, belief, hope, or thought.

(Perfecting today: Mars opp Pallas, Venus nov Black Moon Lilith and sesq Sedna, Mercury nov the South Node, conj Vesta, sq Ceres, contra-parallel Uranus and sesq Zeus, Sun parallel Vesta)

Today’s word image is bees. I think this one is personal, so consider what bees mean to you, what they bring to mind, what stories, images, activities, or entities (who use this as a symbol) that are significant to your life.

Setting the table for your year ahead. Art by Peter Ilsted {{PD}}

Happy Solar Return to those born with the Sun at 24 Aquarius! (this year in effect evening Pacific time of the 12th through evening of the 13th–see your birth chart for your Sun degree!) If you are seeking health, or are someone who is involved with creating it for others and/ or yourself, this year will see you bring forward some incredibly clever, unusual, and even revolutionary ideas for individuals to achieve optimum health in all its forms (which I might define as an optimal relationship with one’s environment and the other Beings one shares this with). The area where things might not go so well is the emotional one, where the ‘blind spot’ could hold any number of potential missteps, all of which can cause anguish. The problem is you’re struggling against your intuition, and if you continue, you’ll inevitably pay the price. Try to be up front and open with others; having no pretenses is the best way to avoid problems, and re-connect with your intuitive nature.

What we truly care about, are invested in, honor, find sacred, are willing to sacrifice some part of ourselves for, these are the things that benefit us today. Rewards come in a form commensurate with the matter we value; if we find we’re not getting the Love or other payoff we expect from some quarter, then we can be sure we don’t really treat, honor, or care for what we think we do as we think we do. Around you, posers will be exposed, and today’s ‘reveals’ will be an excellent guide determining where and in whom it’s worth investing your own time, energy, money, and faith.

Today’s word image is an individual in your life who is hiding judgmentalism, intolerance, and outright hate behind a banner of enlightenment and ‘right thinking’. It seems to have become a popular sport nowadays, righteously telling others how wrong they are. A particular individual’s behavior brought this to the fore, but it’s true for all of us: if we’re so sure about our rightness that we beat others down when they try to express themselves, belittle, show disdain for, or cut people out of our lives when they disagree, or insist on sharing our opinion loudly and repeatedly to others over and again ‘proving’ our superiority, then what we need isn’t for the world to change to our specifications, but some humility accompanied by a reality check in relation to our own humanity.

4 February 2019 New Moon in Aquarius/ Lunar New Year: Dark And Light

Dr Neil Clifton / ‘Witches Galore’ at Newchurch 1978 / CC BY-SA 2.0

I’m really not into that whole binary, opposites, yay or nay way of seeing the world, but today may present us with a gentle mixing of two theoretically opposing influences, and normally I would counsel, “Sort them out,” but not this time. We’ll feel the urges toward both power expression and submission to a greater force, the urge to destroy and the urge to transform, we’ll dwell on injustices large and small, on what’s been forgotten or ignored, on hurts and their elimination, and all of it will come in the course of just going after what we want–and the most advantageous thing we can do is open to it all, allow it to wash over us, and most important, refuse to pass judgment on any of it. Let go of the negative/ positive designations, don’t put yourself under pressure to define, pronounce, or critique, accept it all as worthy of both existing and receiving your attention, and the way forward will be laid out for you, crystal clear–and you may be amazed that you didn’t see it that way, before. If you insist on dividing the world and your perceptions into light and dark, up and down, black and white, expect to be confronted by nothing but one solid shade of gray.

The New Moon occurs at 1:04 PM PST of the 4th at 15 Aquarius 45, and tells its story quietly, largely through midpoint pictures, as it falls midway in a sextile between Saturn and Neptune, and midway between a square of Venus and Chiron–but if we think for a moment, we realize that means Earth is apex to both a Finger of God (with the sextiling planets as base) and a Fist of God (or Thor’s Hammer, with the square planets as base). Right away this tells us something interesting: that though we’re used to New and Full Moons having largely emotional impacts, this time the brunt of the event shows up materially, in the physical world or in the nature of what surrounds us, tangible or intangible (the intangible in this case meaning the circumstances around us, the mental and emotional lay of the land).

The material situation will change or see a new direction, then, that may come from physical events, or that is the result of emotional ones. Since a New Moon is a start, a birth, a new direction by its very nature, we can expect change, and in Aquarius the event may be something startlingly new, a catching-up-with-the-times thing, or an imposition of the modern, or could show us what happens when the intellectual is applied to the environment. Too, this could suggest some will feel alienated from their own emotions, as the NM events play out, bringing a delayed reaction, an ‘I just didn’t know how to stop it’ reflection later, or a situation where an individual can’t yet react, because they don’t yet know how they feel.

The New Moon’s also widely conjoined Mercury (but really, only the Moon will care to catch up anytime soon, making Mercury in relation to the NM event more an idea that you already had, that shows up at the New Moon); our attention, then, will go the the sextile and the square, and what they promise. The sextile/ base of the Finger of God that catches the New Moon at its midpoint suggests dreams, visions, imaginings, hallucinations, nightmares (Neptune) made real (Saturn); the square/ base of the Fist of God that puts the New Moon at its midpoint suggests something that has the urgency of an emergency surrounding either skill deployment or the wounded nature (Chiron at 29 degrees), with this expressing through Art, relationships, or financial choices (Venus), possibly ones that locks us into obligations, contracts, or a system or framework within which we must work (Capricorn). For both cases, the apex planet Earth sits in Leo, implying that this will bring forward personal, individual situations that may challenge the Self-image, identity, ego, or the unique greater purpose the individual serves.

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘A Big Businessman At His Desk’. Again, the theme of worldly involvement and material results, with the individual as the driving force. In this particular case, we need also to look at the Earth’s Sabian: ‘The Storm Ended, All Nature Rejoices In Brilliant Sunshine’. At the very least, this promises that New Moon outcomes will clear up the environment/ atmosphere, very likely offering positive prospects ahead, the promise of ‘smooth sailing’ under clear skies.

(Along with the New Moon, we see Vesta parallel Ceres, Pluto nov Vesta, Mercury conj and parallel Black Moon Lilith, nov Chiron, and trine Zeus)

Though we don’t usually, we have a word image that I think will apply through to the next New Moon: the phrase ‘Juno therapeutics’. Ever since I saw it on the side of a building I’ve been thinking about what therapies the goddess might recommend. I toyed with things like Juno seeing revenge as therapeutic, or maybe owning your very own peacock! I think the broadest ideas are most applicable, those surrounding owning one’s own power, exercising prerogatives to the fullest, being keenly aware of from whom or what one’s power derives, and perhaps most important of all, don’t give commands or require things from others you have no power to enforce–that only drains the power you do have and acts as a breeding ground for resentment and vengeful circumstances.
