S103-E-5037 (21 December 1999)— Astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery recorded this rarely seen phenomenon of the full Moon partially obscured by the atmosphere of Earth. The image was recorded with an electronic still camera at 15:15:15 GMT, Dec. 21, 1999 NASA – http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/gallery/images/shuttle/sts-103/html/s103e5037.html {{PD}}

For the forecast for 2 August, please click here–

The Full Moon perfects at 8:58 AM PDT on the 3rd at 11 Aquarius 45, loosely sextile Chiron and catching Ceres (which Saturn also happens to parallel) at the midpoint, square Uranus, and sesquiquadrate Venus in Gemini. A Full Moon in Aquarius brings culmination, conclusion, a finish or ending, and so at least to some extent understanding, as Higher Mind either orchestrates and delivers the realizations that come with ‘lessons’ or delivers innovative, inventive, or original ‘answers’, sometimes to questions we didn’t even know we had, and sometimes via surprises, accidents, or serendipities!

Contacts this time suggest healing through accepting some facet of our own authority–this is, in essence, the response we must give when the difficult Uranian situation occurs, and this situation in turn likely springs from the difficult Venusian one, centered in relationships, finances, or values. With Aquarius, Aries, and Gemini involved talk, especially assertions stating ‘I Am’ or ‘I Know’, comes to the fore, though the Uranian element of the equation sits firmly in Taurus, telling us that something physical may spark speeches, declarations, and attempts to define the Self and persuade others of the legitimacy of the designation.

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘On A Vast Staircase Stand People Of Different Types, Graduated Upward’. Does this imply some sort of human hierarchy or Karmic ‘ranking’, does it represent different points of development or evolution for the individual, or does it simply illustrate how we’re all at a slightly different ‘place’ on the same ‘staircase’? When we weigh the aspects made by this Full Moon with this symbol, it may be that part of what we come to understand with FM events is that everyone has a slightly different perspective, depending on their spot on life’s staircase; that would suggest that the sense of understanding one person gets may be other than what someone at a different point, and so having a different perspective, concludes. This might warn us not to judge others using our own perspective; our conclusion is valid for us, for the position we hold, but may not be valid for anyone else.

‘Night Fete, International Fisheries Exhibition 1883 London, England’ By Frederick Whymper {{PD}}

We also look at the Sun’s Sabian for a Full Moon: ‘An Evening Party Of Adults On A Lawn Illumined By Fancy Lanterns’. The social circle we move in as individuals is illuminated by the glow of maturity (this is an adult party), and this again emphasizes, when combined with the Full Moon’s Sabian, that different perspectives depend on our personal viewpoint–or said another way, birds of a feather flock together. Our conclusion might be that there are good reasons for us to be where we are in life; acknowledging that our experiences are tailor-made for what we need to discover, learn, experience goes a long way toward seeing that accepting our circumstances is the first step in learning from them, and then moving on to an even more desirable situation. The Aquarius Full Moon delivers a chance to move up a step or two as we gain understanding; sticking to our misconceptions, refusing to learn, is literally the only thing standing in our way.

‘The Birth of Aphrodite’ By Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky 1887 {{PD}}

The New Moon in Aquarius (also known as the Chinese New Year) occurs at 1:41 PM PST of the 24th at 4 Aquarius 21, sextile Chiron and square Uranus, but both of those on the wide and separating side, and we can also include a loose novile to Venus in Pisces. That suggests in a psychic sense the New Moon is dangling out there, a loner, an individualist, on its own, birthing something unanticipated, something startling and beautiful–and in Aquarius, that can be something new, modern, advanced, academic, unpredictable, or chaotic.

We may take an intellectual approach to the new feelings sparked at this time, or may discover a new understanding of an already extent situation, and these viewpoints arise from both a shock and a healing moment; those may be the same thing, or two different things, but together end up opening the door brilliantly to a reward, relationship, or ‘treasure’ of great spiritual depth, one that connects us in a unique way to the Collective.

However, there’s nothing brash about what happens here. The shocks are mild, traceable to a recent conflict or difficulty, and perceived in such a way that with a bit of effort, all can be healed, smoothed over, or put right, with the upset likely showing us exactly what we need to see. Conflict with the group is possible, or we may be guilty of erratic behavior, unreliability, or generating chaos ourselves, but it’s within the tumult that we find the seeds of understanding, revelation, and ultimately, acceptance.

The novile to Venus in Pisces holds our ideal of Love, relationship, asset acquisition or talent expression before us, and shows us a clever and inspired way to achieve it; we still have to reach for it, putting in some energy to make it a reality–nothing is guaranteed, and the unpredictable element, if left unaddressed, can take it all sideways in a heartbeat.

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘A Council Of Ancestors Is Seen Implementing The Efforts Of A Young Leader’. Here the emphasis is on the experienced group recognizing the innovative leader, with the mention of youth a clue to that figure’s link to Higher Mind–for where else does wisdom come from, if one is short on experience? This implies that the revelations or reveals that accompany the New Moon are informed by a higher intelligence, and that it will take a cooperative effort, or an acceptance by the majority, to implement them.

No matter what form taken by the unanticipated beauty of the New Moon, and no matter how disorganized or shocking it is initially, it promises positives, information that makes our lives better, an understanding that unites rather than divides. It takes our breath away, and shifts our world-view toward the modern, the fresh, the future.

15 August 2019 Full Moon in Aquarius: Cost/ Benefit Analysis

Vandenis (Aquarius) in the twelve-paiting cycle Zodiakas (Zodiac) By Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis 1907 {{PD}}

The Full Moon occurs at 5:29 AM Pacific time at 22 Aquarius 24. Venus is still closely conjoined the Sun, and so figures in to the T-square formed by Vesta in Taurus. This dynamic describes the principle tension and likely revelation (or revelatory tension!) of the Full Moon event. A Full Moon is a culmination of energy, a building to completeness of some matter either related to the House where the FM falls or that has the character of the sign in which the FM perfects, and typically this has a strong emotional component. A T-square suggests conflict reaching a head, leading to either a showdown or an impasse, a ‘no resolution’ situation that we can only see a way out of after the Lunar event, likely by, in this case, following values and commitment guidelines.

In Aquarius we could come to some emotional conclusion without even realizing it, and yet not really feel it. Aquarius is forever mixing up the mental and the emotional, and the event or atmosphere associated with this Full Moon may not be recognized as an emotional ending, though the emotions will be stirred. The mind may jump in, rationalize, or may attain a mental understanding that neglects the emotional impact (and so neglects the individual emotional needs). Distance from feelings is a distinct hazard. We may not realize ‘it’s’ over, in some way–or we may not realize that ‘it’ can’t go on like this, despite the Aquarian promise of its Fixed nature, that encourages us to believe things can go on as they are, indefinitely.

This Waterbearer looks at first glance like Libra. Aquarius bronze and glass grille figure, National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C. Photo By Carol M. Highsmith {{PD}}

The tug-of-war this time may be between some feature of the talent or Self-worth picture, in the form of its value or cost to the Soul expression (Sun-Venus in Leo) versus an emotional-intellectual need that has a material component, or that involves surroundings or assets (Moon-Earth in Aquarius). What we spend and what we gain when we express ourselves may see direct reflection (a Moon characteristic) in material/ physical forms (Earth conjunction), and will carry an emotional charge–and the Full Moon’s function may be to make this as clear as possible by showing any dissonance among these elements of expression, material results, and the feeling nature as measured against our highest values, commitments, and those things we find sacred (Vesta).

There are no other contacts to the Full Moon that fall within our relatively narrow allowed orb. That just points out that the entire ‘punch’ is in the dissonance of the T, not scattered or watered down with many influences. You’ll likely end up running a cost/benefit analysis with values as your guideline, prompted by the Full Moon, and what you conclude may have an outsized impact on the forms Soul expression might take or the value you assign to the identity, with an emotional and material assessment of the profits possible or the costs incurred a key part of the equation.

You may come face-to-face with an inner or an outer ‘bear’, and you’ll need to deal with it. By John Bauer 1902 {{PD}}

The Sabian symbol for the Full Moon is, ‘A Big Bear Sitting Down And Waving All Its Paws’. The thing that draws your attention at the Full Moon is, as the saying goes, ‘a real bear’, that is, something truly troublesome or difficult to handle that you can no longer ignore. As a symbol, a bear suggests something big, animalistic in nature, that is already present but that you’ve been looking past, ignoring, that you’ve been denying the needs, nature, or existence of. Astrologically it may be represented by the asteroid Vesta; it may show there’s something we respect that we’ve been neglecting, or something that we need to respect, that we’ve somehow failed to honor–and certainly, what we honor is meant to show us a way out of any stress brought on by the Lunar event.

The Sabian for the Sun (and for Venus as well) is, ‘In A Circus The Bareback Rider Displays Her Dangerous Skill’. This suggests that it’s our own actions or displays of talent that create the Full Moon situation in the first place. Something daring or out of the ordinary, something we’ve attempted, is the initial source of the Full Moon event energy, and this is specifically a try at showing our skills or talents, at putting them before the audience of ‘The Big Top’–that is, showing our talents in a public venue,or showing them openly, for all to see. Look to the House holding the Sun-Venus to help you pinpoint the nature of this effort, and look to the House that holds the Full Moon for clues to the life area that offer a response to this effort, with challenges coming from, or issues pointed out, via persons or matters of the House that holds transiting Vesta (which sits at 22 Taurus 38).

Good day to . . . see what you must deal with in order to bring your unique talents to the fore and so create/ attract Love or Money. This is an ‘information’ day, one where, if you’re paying attention and ‘want to know’, you can gain an enormous amount of useful data, especially about how and where to ‘put yourself out there’.

For those born with the Sun at 23 Leo. Check your natal chart for the correct Sun degree (you may want to read both the degree number and the one that follows, if you have minutes on your Sun position–together these offer a more complete picture of your year ahead). This solar year, dear Leo, may be headlined, ‘Pursuit of Love or Money’. It may also be an emotionally stressful year, one where you feel you must ‘do or die’, or where the emotional reality meets a turning point, such that it changes dramatically. So, the pair of matters, emotions and those things pursued, are likely to swallow up most of your effort and attention, and you should know, they’re meant to–a narrowed focus may be the only way you can deal with getting what you need, with finding worthwhile reward, and with creating the relationships you really want, so don’t let others label you selfish–this year you deserve to live about you and for you. Good luck!

I’m really not into that whole binary, opposites, yay or nay way of seeing the world, but today may present us with a gentle mixing of two theoretically opposing influences, and normally I would counsel, “Sort them out,” but not this time. We’ll feel the urges toward both power expression and submission to a greater force, the urge to destroy and the urge to transform, we’ll dwell on injustices large and small, on what’s been forgotten or ignored, on hurts and their elimination, and all of it will come in the course of just going after what we want–and the most advantageous thing we can do is open to it all, allow it to wash over us, and most important, refuse to pass judgment on any of it. Let go of the negative/ positive designations, don’t put yourself under pressure to define, pronounce, or critique, accept it all as worthy of both existing and receiving your attention, and the way forward will be laid out for you, crystal clear–and you may be amazed that you didn’t see it that way, before. If you insist on dividing the world and your perceptions into light and dark, up and down, black and white, expect to be confronted by nothing but one solid shade of gray.

The New Moon occurs at 1:04 PM PST of the 4th at 15 Aquarius 45, and tells its story quietly, largely through midpoint pictures, as it falls midway in a sextile between Saturn and Neptune, and midway between a square of Venus and Chiron–but if we think for a moment, we realize that means Earth is apex to both a Finger of God (with the sextiling planets as base) and a Fist of God (or Thor’s Hammer, with the square planets as base). Right away this tells us something interesting: that though we’re used to New and Full Moons having largely emotional impacts, this time the brunt of the event shows up materially, in the physical world or in the nature of what surrounds us, tangible or intangible (the intangible in this case meaning the circumstances around us, the mental and emotional lay of the land).

The material situation will change or see a new direction, then, that may come from physical events, or that is the result of emotional ones. Since a New Moon is a start, a birth, a new direction by its very nature, we can expect change, and in Aquarius the event may be something startlingly new, a catching-up-with-the-times thing, or an imposition of the modern, or could show us what happens when the intellectual is applied to the environment. Too, this could suggest some will feel alienated from their own emotions, as the NM events play out, bringing a delayed reaction, an ‘I just didn’t know how to stop it’ reflection later, or a situation where an individual can’t yet react, because they don’t yet know how they feel.

The New Moon’s also widely conjoined Mercury (but really, only the Moon will care to catch up anytime soon, making Mercury in relation to the NM event more an idea that you already had, that shows up at the New Moon); our attention, then, will go the the sextile and the square, and what they promise. The sextile/ base of the Finger of God that catches the New Moon at its midpoint suggests dreams, visions, imaginings, hallucinations, nightmares (Neptune) made real (Saturn); the square/ base of the Fist of God that puts the New Moon at its midpoint suggests something that has the urgency of an emergency surrounding either skill deployment or the wounded nature (Chiron at 29 degrees), with this expressing through Art, relationships, or financial choices (Venus), possibly ones that locks us into obligations, contracts, or a system or framework within which we must work (Capricorn). For both cases, the apex planet Earth sits in Leo, implying that this will bring forward personal, individual situations that may challenge the Self-image, identity, ego, or the unique greater purpose the individual serves.

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘A Big Businessman At His Desk’. Again, the theme of worldly involvement and material results, with the individual as the driving force. In this particular case, we need also to look at the Earth’s Sabian: ‘The Storm Ended, All Nature Rejoices In Brilliant Sunshine’. At the very least, this promises that New Moon outcomes will clear up the environment/ atmosphere, very likely offering positive prospects ahead, the promise of ‘smooth sailing’ under clear skies.

(Along with the New Moon, we see Vesta parallel Ceres, Pluto nov Vesta, Mercury conj and parallel Black Moon Lilith, nov Chiron, and trine Zeus)

Though we don’t usually, we have a word image that I think will apply through to the next New Moon: the phrase ‘Juno therapeutics’. Ever since I saw it on the side of a building I’ve been thinking about what therapies the goddess might recommend. I toyed with things like Juno seeing revenge as therapeutic, or maybe owning your very own peacock! I think the broadest ideas are most applicable, those surrounding owning one’s own power, exercising prerogatives to the fullest, being keenly aware of from whom or what one’s power derives, and perhaps most important of all, don’t give commands or require things from others you have no power to enforce–that only drains the power you do have and acts as a breeding ground for resentment and vengeful circumstances.

‘Ejiri in the province of Shinano’ By Katsushika Hokusai c1831 {{PD}}

Wow! Can you feel your mind (and so, especially if you’re Air-heavy, your outlook) expand as Mercury comes out of that Scorpionic cave? The thinking may be changeable and ‘on fire’ (Sagittarius), but what does the flame need to thrive? Oxygen, and that may be in short supply right now, with only asteroids and Earth in the Air element–but today the transiting Moon in Aquarius offers support. Mercury’s emergence (and our mentality’s ability to ‘come into the light’) may be accomplished through a marriage of intellect and feeling, and the determination to stay grounded (Earth in Gemini) even as the horizons expand. No matter what the elemental composition of your natal chart, a sense of renewal, of opening up, is yours, should you be willing to embrace the following: optimism, on a grand scale, while simultaneously facing the facts; the ‘Big Picture’, to include an awareness that there are things we don’t know or see; seeing the ambitions for what they will actually bring, if pursued; and perceiving the way empowerment may not support (or may require adjustment for) the identity. This is a shift that may be more strongly felt, and more disorienting, than we anticipate–hold on to your hat!

(Mercury enters Sagittarius, Sun sxt Zeus and qnx Juno)

Today’s word image is applause. How often are you applauded in life? This can be any kind of complement, accolade, praise, or absolutely literal. Do you live for this? Is it more meaningful to you than criticism, or do they carry equal weight? Are you able to hear only one, praise or criticism, and not the other? Does applause affect how you behave, your commitments, where you put your energy, or your feelings about yourself or others? The more susceptible you are to changing yourself and your viewpoint in response to praise/ criticism in all its forms, the more difficult it is to hear and follow that inner voice, to maintain personal standards, or to be honest with yourself.

20 September 2018 Superior To What?

‘Still Life with Sunflowers’ 1881 By Claude Monet {{PD}}

Or is that ‘to whom’? The Sun and Mercury meet in Superior Conjunction today, with ‘Superior’ describing Mercury as in direct motion–and so delivering in full bloom what was seeded at the Inferior Conjunction that occurred during Merc’s retrograde phase (around 9 August). This meeting coincides with the Sun-Mercury trine to Sedna; coupled with the conjunction’s placement in Virgo, we can anticipate the SC bringing a message or accounting via results or plans implemented 2+ months ago. Mercury-Sun also noviles Venus, hinting that what we learn may involve either the ‘worth’ of relationships or deal with more concrete financial matters. In either case, we get info that demands a critical assessment of previous plans and efforts.

And here come the more subtle facets of those financial or relationship matters: Venus parallels the Black Moon Lilith point as well as the South Node point, suggesting there are very fine shades to what we learn, and that they echo both the past, and matters we have been ignoring or denying. Those echoes may stir the emotions, as the Aquarius Moon passes over both those points, suggesting one of two outcomes: we may either receive an intuitive revelation, which shows us the way to the next step, or feeling overwhelms, undercutting the information and perhaps flooding us with confusion. Being aware of the latter possibility is key; knowing that can happen can help us re-focus on the facts if it does.

Today’s word image is ‘The Sound of Music’. Having heard this mentioned repeatedly by several different sources within a very short time, I know the image/ idea is sound (ha! see what I did there?) but is also open to individual interpretation. Does the musical spring to mind for you? For me it was literally ‘the sound of music’, as I’ve been to three concerts in the past ten days, and in the same period I also discovered that if I listen to my iPod before bed, I don’t go to bed!! So, for me, this amounted to Self-revelation. For others, maybe it’s about appreciation (‘My Favorite Things’), finding Love or social elevation (the governess marries the aristocrat), losing a particular ‘shape’ to one’s faith (a nun leaves the convent), or escape (“Look–Nazis! Run!”)

26-27 July 2018 Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius: Consequences

By Quinn Dombrowski from Berkeley, USA – Implications and consequences of “all is one”, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=69798491

The 26th, the eve of the eclipse, brings a dust-up, with Venus novile Pallas, and the Sun quincunx Saturn and opposed Mars. Facing another’s Will or aggression requires adjustment, either to our vision of the reality picture or to circumstances themselves–but if we keep what we care about (Venus) in mind, we are inspired with smart and practical means of handling things.

The Total Lunar eclipse of 27 July 2018 (1:19 PM PDT) falls at 4 Aquarius 44, forming just after contact to, and still within orb of, a retrograde Mars; the Full Moon is also in wide sextile to Chiron and wide square to Uranus, with the latter, ruler of the eclipse itself, forming a T-square with the Sun-Earth-Moon-Mars axis. The only other aspect made is a sesquiquadrate to Venus in Virgo. A Lunar eclipse is a Full Moon, and this one occurs in the crisp, intellectually-oriented, forward-thinking sign of Aquarius, suggesting the event delivers revelation or understanding. Since it’s conjoined Mars, what appears could be the consequences of our own choices or actions, as instituted at the inception point of the previous Solar eclipse/ New Moon, or it could be that what we come to understand drives a current choice or action, with consequences still to be seen. That preceding Moon opposed Pluto, suggesting a power situation revealed, and this Full Moon may be the personal response to it, something driven by our intellectualization of the events that we then act on or choose according to, as we see the outcome of the New Moon start.

The results as manifested at this Lunar eclipse point have the potential for wounding or for calling forth skills (Chiron), but in either instance they show the need to express the individuality, or to accede to the group (Uranus), and all of this is likely spurred by difficulties surrounding relationships, finances, or Self-worth (Venus).

The Full Moon Sabian is, ‘A Council Of Ancestors Is Seen Implementing The Efforts Of A Young Leader’. This suggests that the authority and experience of those who came before plays a vital role in showing us which direction to take; that is, we learn from the past, especially from the experiences of others, appropriate considering eclipses always fall near the Nodal axes, with this Lunar one conjoined the South Node.

Since this eclipse seems so directly connected to the one preceding it, we’ll forgo our usual inspection of the Sun’s Sabian for a Full Moon, since in this case our ‘source’ is the New Moon that came two weeks before. Instead we move on to the next and final component of this eclipse set, the Solar eclipse in Leo.

The 27th besides the Lunar eclipse sees Venus sesquiquadrate Mars and trine Pluto, and Merc parallels Juno, adding to the sense of personal assurance even as it disturbs intra-personal balances and hands Love or Money all the Power. In spite of our own confidence, we must bow to some large concept external that holds sway–but considering the Sabian for the eclipse, this could place us, no matter our age, in the ‘Council Of Ancestors’ in the way that we need this fresh infusion of energy or information input, need to ‘follow the leader’, in this case Love or Money, in order to keep our efforts relevant and our choices effective.

The Eclipses of July-August 2018

Here are the general forecasts for the eclipse set coming late this summer. Notice that the first two seem strongly connected; I fully expect events around the initial Solar one to lead directly to the events of the Full Lunar one that follows at the end of July.

The Partial Solar eclipse of 12 July 2018 (7:48 PM PDT) falls at 20 Cancer 41 as the Moon, Earth, and Sun align on the same plane, allowing the Moon to ‘eclipse’ the normally dominant Sun at their New Moon meeting. This event also sees Earth, which of course is always opposed the Sun, conjoined Pluto, making its opposition to the New Moon eclipse the centerpiece of the aspect picture; asteroid Zeus forms a T-square with the Sun-Moon-Earth-Pluto axis, and Ceres is semi-square the New Moon. A Solar eclipse, this one in Water, is a new beginning, and that can come gently, like a tide lapping at the shore, or fiercely, like a wave crashing on the beach—but in either case, it brings change, which may slowly pull the sand from beneath your feet, can knock those feet out from under you, and/ or could even wipe the landscape clean in a tsunami, leaving you in an entirely new place. Change, then, is expected, and with Pluto opposed the event and conjoined the Earth, the very ground on which we walk, we may want to be highly attentive to the mix of Water and Earth, emotion and the material, flow and static states, in our world.

This event in a Water sign also emphasizes the emotional component eclipses already carry, as they are mainly Lunar events, with the Moon playing the pivotal role, either in blocking the Sun’s light from us (a Solar eclipse) or acting as the screen on which we observe the blocking of the light (by the Earth, as it moves between Moon and Sun) in a Lunar eclipse. This Solar eclipse event doubles down on the emotional, psychological, and intuitive potentials, making us all naturally hyper-sensitive to the atmosphere around the New Moon. Symbolically this speaks of, in the case of a Solar eclipse, emotions themselves causing a blockage between the material world (Earth) and ‘What Is’, including purpose and intent (the Sun). The block is meant as a disruptor, a point at which the usual view just can’t be adopted, as the light in which we view things is suddenly radically different. We keep this in mind as we look at the particulars of any eclipse event, as consciousness about the larger scenario illuminates the smaller details of the single occurrence.

Here we have the sheer power of Pluto aligned with Earth—and of course this kind of aspect always makes me think of earthquakes or volcanoes—most likely of a personal, symbolic nature, and this directly opposes the meeting of Sun and Moon on the ecliptic, so that we have Earth-Pluto, a material or physical power situation, that is receiving no light, as the Moon prevents it. That suggests that at or following the eclipse we face a real-world challenge that we’re prevented from understanding by our own emotional response.

Too, the challenge puts us in a spot: not only is our authority to respond at issue (Ceres), but we see conflicts with our goals, ambitions, and/ or desires (Zeus). The Sabian symbol for the eclipse is, ‘A Famous Singer Is Proving Her Virtuosity During An Operatic Performance’. This not only speaks of the individual need to express ourselves in a way most characteristic of us as unique individuals—to ‘sing out’—with the eclipse challenge one of performance: show us your stuff! In the context of the eclipse, what we see is that the ability to convey who we are, our strongest and most authoritative identity (Ceres) expressed in an earthly venue (Earth-Pluto) is endangered by our extreme emotional response (the eclipse), which blocks an objective assessment of the situation.

The Earth moves, and we react—and that stops a clear understanding of what’s actually happening, and so of knowing what’s actually affected. The change that happens here is serious, but not necessarily permanent; we may do best to see it more as inevitable reform, events or revelations that present us with personal power and ‘territory’ issues we hadn’t yet faced, and conflicts with ambition fulfillment we hadn’t yet acknowledged. Taking that tack tells us that what elicits our emotional reaction at the eclipse could’ve been anticipated, if we’d realized the extent to which these matters, goal achievement and our power reach, needed our attention to begin with.

The Partial Solar eclipse in Leo falls at 18 degrees, 41 minutes on August 11th at 2:57 AM PDT. This event is conjoined Pallas—ah! ‘new wisdom’ is the result of the past two events—with the aspects offering a subtle picture of what it is we’ve gained. A new start in Leo is about ourselves and our identity, and those facets of the individuality that allow us to ‘shine’; the aspects made by the eclipse describe the nature of our attributes, the ways in which we can make our uniqueness known. What begins at this time also has an air of the practical about it, or a sense of skills possessed—but no matter what, a situation that allows us to be our Best Self.

The eclipse-Pallas sextiles Zeus and catches Ceres at the midpoint, even as it semi-squares Venus. This suggests that it’s in the act of reaching for ambition or desire fulfillment that we both gain authority and power and learn what needs to change in relationships or finances in order to make ‘it’ happen. Should we count this as base to a Finger of God, with a loose Neptune apex? Maybe, if we consider that what we likely need to do to fine-tune the ambition picture is rid ourselves of delusions, or utilize our creativity—that’s what can make the whole thing work together.

The eclipse is also apex to a loose Fist of God with base of Saturn and Chiron, and quincunxes Pluto. As apex, the eclipse promises that resolution of conflicts between the reality picture or reasonable restraints applied to our effort, and our own skill set or wounded nature (the latter possibly referring to unreasonable restraints that need removal), offers a ‘New You’, a  fresh expression of identity or purpose, and that this is also an expression of our own wisdom and gifts (Pallas). The contact to Pluto simply tells us adjustment is needed, whether we want to gather power, make a change, eliminate, or transform.

There’s also an Earth Grand Trine that hooks into the eclipse by degree: Ceres (semi-sextile), Pluto (quincunx), and Juno (square). This implies the eclipse may be a spark of sorts, putting into motion material matters that, one and all, are concerned with power and power expression. No matter what else is in play at this time, this Grand Trine reminds us that there are some very real material stakes here, and that even the most innocent of moves holds an ultimate goal of gaining or solidifying the ability to make the individual Will felt and impactful.

If we really want to get loose with things, we can also see that the T-square formed by Juno’s hard angle to the axis  becomes a Grand Cross if we pull Jupiter into the equation. This may remind us that individual development doesn’t happen in a vacuum; others to whom we reach out, look for reactions and interactions, and to get a measure of our own empowerment are part of the picture, and must be taken into account, especially when we think about how beliefs, knowledge, and the capacity to reach out and to accept what we consider ‘foreign’ all shape not just our potentials for success, but our view of our own adequacy, as well.

The Sabian symbol for this New Moon eclipse in Leo is, ‘A Houseboat Party’. That promises a celebration, once we’ve dealt with anything that’s not working on our path forward to Self-expression—but we should also note the party of the image is afloat—that is, hovering on the surface of the water, the symbol of feeling. That tells us that beneath the joy engendered by successful realization of our gifts, skills, and most unique qualities lies a body of emotion, one that it’s entirely possible to sink into, even to lose our joy to. That implies that after this sequence of eclipses we might have a whole new set of emotions to explore—and maybe entirely new feelings related to how we see ourselves (Leo).

15 February 2018 Solar Eclipse in Aquarius: Revelation, Revolution

Robert Spencer ‘The Seed of Revolution’ {{PD}}

We see a partial Solar eclipse at 27 Aquarius 07 at 1:05 PM Pacific time of the 15th. Aquarius suggests a theme of understanding, beneath the flash of what’s new and original, beneath the trend toward being different, and below the busyness of the intellect and the fussiness of the academic; this is emphasized by the way this New Moon is tucked late in the sign along with the planet Mercury and asteroids Juno and Hygeia, all with less than a 1.25 degree span, so very close together. A New Moon is a time of beginnings, of inception, and in this sign and with these fellow travelers suggests the start to a new way of thinking and feeling centered on a healthy personal sense of empowerment. Somehow we have a better understanding of who we are and of our emotional landscape, and that translates into clearer perceptions in the life area (as determined by subjects of the House) in the natal chart where the eclipse falls.

It also translates into new starts, things begun in the spirit of an emotional need for an intellectual quest–or the intellectual need to discover and connect to the emotions. In whichever way you’re lacking, this Solar eclipse will prompt consideration of the missing facet, likely revealing healthy and fitting ways in which you can empower yourself. This New Moon promises a new and original mindset, tailored to who you are, a revolution in how you approach life itself, a spark that may bring chaos but that ultimately lights the way toward more effective forms of communication between the Self and the Universe. (On a personal note, look to the Houses of the natal chart ruled by Mercury for clues as to and from where that communication might flow).

The Solar eclipse and company also sextiles Uranus, catching Chiron at the midpoint. This implies sudden revelation, with the capacity to heal (most likely) or to wound (a scant possibility). The inclination is to reveal and understand, and so to make a space to heal, or to react radically and cause hurt to the Self or others. The NM also squares Sedna, and we’ll count a wide square to Jupiter, as all together these form a Fixed T-square that is destined to make a bigger splash than we might at first think. The understanding and revelation we receive with the eclipse will create tension among ‘the facts’ or beliefs, and the instincts and those things we ‘know but don’t know’; this discord may lead to the eclipse events, or may spring from them, but in either case will translate into a new understanding, and so to taking a new direction.

One other minor aspect of note: the eclipse is semi-square the point Black Moon Lilith–and of course, that means BML is sesquiquadrate the Earth. This implies that something ignored or denied will cause a problem that leads to eclipse events–or vice versa, that eclipse events bring forward difficult circumstances that have up to now been ignored or denied. This may be, at the time of the eclipse, the most prominent thing, a thing you’d hoped would just go away that now, ‘in your face’, must be dealt with–it could distract from deeper, evolutionary shifts that occur, so that we only later see how much has changed, and what a revelation that change is.

‘The Oak’ By Issak Ilich Levitan c1880 {{PD}}

It all adds up to a kind of revolution, the nature of which is determined by the revelations received; they are instructions on how to empower ourselves in the most positive way possible, and suggest that tension or missteps arise directly from a failure to reconcile the nuts and bolts of the reality picture with our belief system and those things that are a part of our nature. What happens here is described in the Sabian symbol for the eclipse: ‘A Tree Felled And Sawed To Ensure A Supply Of Wood For The Winter’. A resource sacrificed to see us through coming tough times may be what we face with revolution, which is a systemic change meant to foster a better life in a better world–but always, there is a winter that precedes a flourishing spring, one that must be lived through, best we can, as Nature goes through Her cycles and humankind reorganizes into a new system. What happens with the Solar eclipse may be our symbolic supply of wood, meant to see us through a stressful period while the world is rearranged and healed, the terrain becoming ready to bloom around us once again.

Thoughts on Eclipse Season Summer 2017

The Lunar eclipse in Aquarius is just a couple hours off, but I feel as if we’ve been under the distorted light of an eclipse for weeks now. We’ve hit the record for days without rain–51–and are slated to break it, adding at least another seven days of hot, dry weather in the coming week. That’s made it hellish, but what gives the light the dull, reddish shadows even in midday are the wildfires in Canada; the mild flow from North to South that normally cools us in summer is carrying a dense carmine haze that permeates the air from horizon to zenith. Outside it looks and feels like those fleeting moments when the Earth casts its shadow (Lunar eclipse) or when the Moon comes between Earth and Sun, blocking out the Solar orb (Solar eclipse)–and it just seems so unnatural, as if we are living a slow-mo version of a transformative, seminal moment, over days and days.

The Moon last night here just north of Seattle, dark orange and partially obscured by the thick smoke.

Though I know some people are seeing the August eclipses as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, I’m seeing them more as breakwaters, those walls onto which the fiercest waves crash; breakwaters protect the shore from being decimated by the sheer energy of the waves, and these celestial events are meant to disrupt the pattern, to reveal, to free–that last most of all–and to both concentrate (showing us meaning) and dissipate (softening the blow) the impact that can come from a sharp, seemingly sudden energy shift. Take the eclipse events as a breakwater would: let them wash over you, let them reveal what’s generated that wave energy, but don’t allow them to force a precipitous response, or to give you the impression that you’ll never get out from under what it brings.

On a lighter note, I didn’t even know I had a bucket list, until Saturday night; that’s when I realized my Aquarian Ascendant had waited 35 years to hear Fred Schneider intone in person: “I’ve got me a car, and it’s as big as a whale, and it’s about to SET SAIL!” Oh, the little gifts eclipse season brings are really the best. Have a great one! And special thanks to all the lovely people who’ve written some really nice things to and about me lately–those words have been more appreciated than you know.
