The AstroEssence: Venus enters Virgo, and we may start to see ‘virgin territory’ as a desirable place to explore, transform, or critique. We go where we’ve never been before in relationships or financially, or we are willing to be accountable publicly for some change in our values–it’s as if we’re saying, ‘Yes, that’s who I am, not what you expected, right? I’m not afraid to go there”. This is good, if it’s freeing you to express genuine feeling, not so good if it’s an aberration fostered by a too-prickly relationship with Virgoan characteristics, right now (check natal Merc for what it might be receiving by transit–a tense aspect or two almost certainly promises you’ll go out on a limb, then try to saw it off).

The mind may almost compulsively dig into areas where matters are denied or ignored, or where deep change is happening but those involved are pretending everything is just fine. This will cause friction, especially in relationships or financially, but if handled consciously (with deliberate discernment, rather than a critical approach), may excavate areas painful or too long ignored, allowing healing to begin. Warning: thinking easily drifts into the fantastical and unreal; stay connected to the facts–and don’t mistake your or another’s thoughts for facts–for best results (Perfecting today: Venus sesq Pluto, Merc sxt Black Moon Lilith and contra-parallel Neptune)

Today’s word image is a picture of a stranger, found in a box of old family photos. Whose ‘surprise photo’ are you most likely to find emerging from the past? Who within the family is this person connected to, and why? And does this illuminate anything about this family member for you?

For those born with the Sun at 14 Leo: If you’re willing to let go of outmoded or irrelevant energy drains, and acquiesce to re-making those areas that need ‘power reform’, you can mid-way through your year, through to your next birthday, find like-minded others and develop an aesthetic both of which will support realizing your goals and ambitions. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

The AstroEssence: Our ambitions drive everything right now; we have innovative, unique, and inspiring thoughts about our desires, wants, and goals, and we see what’s impractical or unwise about the form our current aims take, and so can modify our intended direction and our efforts. Our quest to express our individuality pushes us forward, and we’re heartened both by seeing how and why things didn’t work in the past, and how we and our ambitions can fit into the social fabric now. Optimism is pervasive, but take care not to bite off more than you can handle (Pallas sesq Zeus, and Merc nov Zeus and parallel Uranus, Sun nov Jupiter and qnx the SN)

Today’s word image is unfinished knitting. What have we begun to knit together, pulling in different threads to make a coherent and cooperative whole, that we’ve lately put aside, neglected, or given up on? Whatever the project is, remind yourself of what you intended at the time, then look at things in the light of now–that’s the only way to know if it’s right to pick it up and finish, or to unravel things, and put the energy and materials to a better use.

For those born with the Sun at 13 Leo: Though most of the year goes smoothly, you are actually headed for great change; the question is, will this be forced upon you, or will you see the writing on the wall, and modify your course so that what you’re required to do fits into what you want, anyway? You prepare best by being flexible, and at the same time being as Self-responsible and Self-aware as possible; avoid being too critical of yourself or others, as this is especially likely at those points when emotions overcome you. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

The AstroEssence: What we love is actually good for us right now–can you imagine? It may seem like a trick, a deception, a sleight-of-mind, but we’ll only be mislead if we focus our attention too narrowly on ourselves and our interests; keep the world in mind, and our actions and choices can verge on transformative, that’s how effective our ‘reach’ into the real world can be. Make it pleasant, make it pretty, make it profitable, and we’ll all benefit. And we find, in exerting ourselves, that if we anticipated pain for taking charge and being responsible, we were wrong–empowering ourselves is not just hurt-free, but helps us shed any illusions we may have accepted as valid (Chiron contra-parallel Juno, Mars semi-sq Pluto, Venus nov Hygeia, Sun qnx Neptune)

Today’s word image is a forest, where every tree trunk is covered with butterflies. To me butterflies are symbols of potential, of what someone or something can become, and a forest speaks of an environment that acts as a sheltering place to gather, replenish, and breed, a proper ground for bringing something to fruition. This image may prompt us to look at how well our environment incubates our efforts; are they properly nourished, allowed to develop, recognized as valid once they are complete? If not, consider modifications that can help support even the most delicate and elusive of ideas, the inspired kind we must take seriously and pursue, before the moment passes. See one man’s efforts to support butterflies here, and a real-life forest such as our image describes here.

For those born with the Sun at 12 Leo: there is a ‘fresh’ feeling to your new Solar year, one that offers you the time, energy, and inclination to address old issues, see to lingering problems, and adjust current matters so that you are rid of what’s outdated and can effectively turn your attention on the future. You are entering a larger process of change that will take some time; getting right with the past is your first step forward. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

If you don’t find your groove, moving forward may feel like this. 1912
Source https://www.flickr.com/photos/statelibraryofnsw/6433918107/ State Library of New South Wales collection Australian Antarctic Territory {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: Action-taking and choice-making are impulsive and yet create opportunities, and may in particular create an opportunity related to the New Moon; this abundance of possibility is true for us, as long as we access instinct, don’t confuse that with wishful thinking, and stay aligned with our genuine priorities. We can make gains in knowledge and widen our horizons, if we can find the groove. Strange as it may sound, just don’t think about it; that may be our best ‘in’ to the instinctual nature, along with feelings that are clear (that is, not confused with thought). Those who confuse the sources and meaning of their impulses will find it costly, damaging to either relationships or finances, while everyone else can successfully ignore the unpleasant or denied in favor of the instinctual and what’s true to oneself (Mars into Sagittarius, Vesta-Pallas-Juno Water Grand Trine still in effect–see forecast for the 1st–with Vesta also perfecting a sextile to Ceres, Venus sq Sedna, Mercury contra-parallel Black Moon Lilith)

Sun_and_Moon_Nuremberg_chronicleThe Lunar Essence is exemplified by the New Moon in Leo, falling at 10 degrees 57 minutes, at 1:44 PM PDT of the 2nd. This event in Leo brings a focus of Self-awareness, of our part in the larger scheme, and particularly makes us aware of how we might ‘shine’ in life. This meeting of Sun and Moon (as viewed from our perspective on Earth) ends the Dark period and signifies energetically an inception, a new start, a seed moment, likely related to the real-world matters represented by the House in the natal chart in which the NM falls. The aspects made tell us the story; this New Moon is square to Black Moon Lilith, trine Saturn, quincunx Neptune (and close to but too far out to count a quincunx to the SN), and sesquiquadrate Chiron. We personally (Leo) can begin the process of materialization, or we can find shape and context for these matters, or we can limit or otherwise contain issues related to matters of the House where the NM falls. It will take some effort, some of it potentially unpleasant, but the results can be both healing and creative (especially if you can find that groove!) and can remove a long-held shadow from the psyche.

Fritz von Wille 1880 {{PD}}

Fritz von Wille 1880 {{PD}}

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘Children Play On A Swing Hanging From The Branches Of A Huge Oak Tree’. This may tell us that our best approach, as with the ‘not thinking’ mentioned above, is one that takes a carefree attitude with developments, toward both what we do or generate and what comes from outside us. Play may be our most useful and productive way of engaging the energies, as it all ‘hangs’ on our wisdom and strength, signified by the oak in the image.

For those born with the Sun at 11 Leo: it may feel like you have just awakened, just been struck by the lightning of an exciting and vital idea, or that you are embarking on a renewed life, even if nothing in your circumstances has changed. This is the effect of having your Solar Return follow so closely in the lee of a New Moon. The emphasis, for you this year, is on creativity; be willing to be flexible, to make the changes, adjustments, and modifications that will support exercising your creative energies and doing right by your spiritual needs, because a helpful wind is with you–you can go a lot farther than you think. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

The AstroEssence: We’re well into Dark of the Moon, that three day period prior to the New Moon when the Lunar light is absent, effectively removing our symbolic connection to the passing of time–and it’s this sense of timelessness that we should be mindful of right now. Particularly in that final 24 hours before the New Moon, we may find turning inward more natural than turning outward, and aligning our inner life with our outer one especially difficult, as they seem to be so disconnected. That means that meditation, contemplation, revery, creativity, and seeking the vision are all especially effective now, while activities with a purely external focus don’t get the attention they need, and so don’t go as well as they could. Add to this Mars at 29 Scorpio, and we have the potential for a lot of compulsive or poorly thought out actions and choices, prior to the Mars entry into Sagittarius (and Mars moves into Sagittarius only about two hours before perfection of the New Moon, suggesting that the impulse to act may come forward before the intention, the ‘why’, becomes clear). Perhaps a note to the Self reminding us that though the inner life and viewpoint seem to be of ultimate importance, even more ‘real’, during this period, we are still physical beings in a material world, so measured activity and some caution is advised.

‘Le Bec de Gaz – Nuit bleue’ Henri Le Sidaner 1905 {{PD}}

It’s the perfect time to reach emotional balance, specifically by getting clear within our own minds on what we are dedicated to, where we are empowered to act effectively, and by following the wisdom that exists internally and that is externally offered. It’s in being sure within ourselves of where we want to spend our energy and time, and how we can best exercise our prerogatives, that we find guidance toward the smart choice, or the practical one, and so insure we have the desired impact.

If we align our mentality too closely to material matters, we may find ourselves hurting, particularly through relationships or financial matters, and it’s almost guaranteed we won’t understand why–the tendency will be to blame others or circumstances, rather than see that our own viewpoint needs adjustment (Water Grand Trine of Vesta-Juno-Pallas, Mercury at the midpoint of Vesta-Juno and opp Pallas, Merc trine Ceres, Venus qnx Chiron, Sun sesq Chiron and trine Saturn)

Today’s word image is a swan. Distilling the many meanings and associations of a swan, we see them as symbols of purity, associated with Venus, and linked to music. Look for the ‘swan element’ within your life, those things that represent beauty, purity, and the pure sensory enjoyment that comes from the Venusian aesthetic, especially through music–or just watch for swans, alerting you to synchronicities ahead.

For those born with the Sun at 10 Leo: early in your ‘new year’ you may feel emotionally confused, cut off from the feeling nature by real or imagined barriers, but soon enough you adjust, chiefly by realizing that it’s your own creative energy that’s distorting your perceptions–and that energy needs a solid outlet for expression. This may be your quest this year: to find the ‘perfect’ expressive mode for either your artistic or spiritual Beingness–everything else may take a back seat, until such expression is found. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

Have a great start to your week!

The AstroEssence for Saturday: doing what’s smart empowers (and though you may think, Duh, of course it does! you might be surprised how often we turn away from what we know to be wise, in favor of what’s popular, fashionable, expedient, cheaper, quicker, etc). We call on our inner knowing, in order to be as effective as possible–but this only works if in thinking critically we don’t become destructive or overly focused on the pessimistic or consumed by our own rage or sense of injustice. Keep it balanced, keep it real, and put emotion on the back burner–it will only lead you wrong (Pallas trine Juno, Mercury enters Virgo and sesquiquadrates Pluto, Sun squares Black Moon Lilith)

Dick Ket, 'Still Life with Eggs' 1934 {{PD}}

Dick Ket, ‘Still Life with Eggs’ 1934 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a basket of eggs–in contradiction to that saying, ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.’ Though caution and alertness are still advisable, this may be a time to put all our eggs–that is, all our effort and energy investment–in a single direction. It could be we need to concentrate and push forward without distraction in order to actually achieve what we’ve been aiming at. No more meandering or slow build-up–all-out effort, carefully applied, is now called for.

For those born with the Sun at 8 Leo: as much as half your upcoming year, through to your next birthday, may be spent in the ’emotional dark’, where you may either decline to engage the emotional perceptions or where you may be flying blind, groping for some kind of realization and order connected to the feelings. Eventually, though, illumination comes, and it has tangible, material or physical results that shape your reality, likely in a very positive way. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

By Pierre-Auguste Renoir – {{PD}}

The AstroEssence for Sunday: be aware that the past shapes current ambitions–and may influence negative thinking about aims and goals, as well–and that means what we assume about our wants may be mistaken, rooted in a past that no longer is. Again, smart moves that lead to empowered circumstances are possible; keep in mind that the unexpected, the revolutionary, and the modern may bring benefits but also costs, and these can easily get out-of-hand. Look for easy flow, in both positive and less useful ways, between matters of the Houses ruled by Venus and Uranus in the natal chart (SN parallel Zeus, Pallas sxt Ceres, Venus trine Uranus, Merc semi-sq Zeus)

Michaelangelo Meucci. 1892 {{PD}}

Michaelangelo Meucci. 1892 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a songbird. Are you aware of the ‘song you sing’? That is, do you really know what you’re telling others, celebrating, announcing to the Universe? We’re often unaware of what we’re conveying, thinking we’re presenting one focus when many facets of which we’re unaware are seen (and responded to) by others. We may think we can consciously control what ‘comes out’, but the reality is that what we genuinely are shapes everything. The more honest we are with ourselves, the more authentic our ‘song’ becomes.

For those born with the Sun at 9 Leo: it’s easy to build what you care about this year, through to your next birthday; you have the energy and drive, and previously noted constraints and barriers seem to have fallen away. Don’t waste the opportunity to order your reality in a way that’s much closer to the ideal. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

The AstroEssence: Uranus retrogrades today at 24 Aries 30, and begins backing toward a trine with Venus that perfects in just two days. This suggests a review of both the originality/ uniqueness and the erratic nature or unreliability of our own actions and choices (Uranus in Aries). We measure their worth, their effect on relationships and finances, and we look at how well they serve our own ends and interests (Venus in Leo). Matters of health in any form may figure in to your re-assessment (Venus semi-sq Hygeia); we won’t be able to unsee what we notice about ourselves at this time, so better to take the matter in hand and do something about it. Modern or unusual methods might provide the answers, though it may take some time (through the retrograde, perhaps?) to come to that conclusion. Look to feel this most strongly, at least initially, in the House with Aquarius on the cusp.

Our Uranian considerations may be part of a larger trend toward smart thinking and wise planning that we somehow find difficult to enact. Knowing what’s right may be easy, but making choices or taking actions that support that knowledge may create conflict or in some way prove tough. Finding a way isn’t impossible, though, and indications are this will come clear by the 31st. (Mercury parallel Pallas and sq Mars)

Today’s word image is an angry person venting their anger at the ‘wrong’ Other. If we are avoiding expressing ourselves directly to the person who stirs these emotions in us, then we must consider that we are, for any number of reasons, not being honest with ourselves or with the Universe–and the result is often misdirected animus. Own your feelings, and know that there is a certain amount of choice involved; when we pretend that emotions ‘just happen’, and so in significant ways take us over, we are denying the important point that the feeling couldn’t exist for more than an instant unless we focus on it and feed it–and that is very much a choice.

For those born with the Sun at 7 Leo: hidden or ignored matters bubble to the surface through conflict–I’m sorry, you’re just not going to be able to avoid this–but once dealt with these matters that you once pushed aside can become a source of strength and support–and even better, they can be mustered to uphold justice in some important context within your life. Emotions will speak; be sure you listen. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

Carl Larsson ‘Summer Morning’ 1908 {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: Attention is on health, and that covers a lot of ground, depending on your focus: mental, physical, emotional, spiritual. We are likely to be critical of what we see (Jup in Virgo) especially in terms of externals, of the health of the social order (Jupiter again), but what we need to know is that what we’re seeing, and the origin of our focus, is really us, at a personal level; what we complain of, admire, or desire in matters of health and see in others (Hygeia in Libra) are really statements about ourselves and our responses and reactions to our environment (Sun in Leo). It may be dismissed as simplistic, but what we see out there is definitely what we’re carrying inside, so that externals guide us as to our own need to modify, clear, and make healthy (Perfecting today: Sun sextile Hygeia and semi-square Jupiter)

Today’s word image is a red flower and a stone. What kind of impulse do you have to interact with the two? Is the first thing you think of to smash the flower with the stone? To move the stone so the flower may grow and expand? To put the flower in your hair and the stone in your pocket? To leave them just as they are? To wonder what those two things are doing there? If the flower is ‘new growth’, a chance to ‘blossom’, that needs nurture and space, and the stone is your in-built Saturnian need to aggress, to stop or contain something, then your response to this pair should tell you something about how you’re treating new creations and fledgling projects and energies, and what rules or boundaries you may be imposing on them.

For those born with the Sun at 6 Leo: The health of your primary relationships may be paramount this year, through to your next birthday, with a need to do what’s smart and practical calling the shots. You may be tempted to keep secrets or bury less-than-pleasant factors under the rug, but that will only foster guilt and tensions that may keep even the most inevitable-seeming positive things from happening. Talk it out, this year, and think before you speak; these should be your mantras. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

'Woman Holding a Balance' Johannes Vermeer {{PD}}

‘Woman Holding a Balance’ Johannes Vermeer {{PD}}

There’s a loose Water Grand Trine with Vesta, Juno, and Pallas, all in very early degrees of their respective signs. This offers the balancing of what’s smart, what’s empowering, and what’s sacred to us through the emotions. In this case, getting the emotions under control (the early degrees of a sign can be raw and chaotic) will bring about the balancing. Whatever you’re reacting strongly to can be sorted successfully by asking: What’s the wise choice here? What supports my feelings of effectiveness as well as my highest values? This should tame and direct the passions, as well as soothe what may be a highly overwrought (and so inaccurate) perception of what’s going on.

The AstroEssence: If we’ll accept the unusual idea, the radical (compared to our current way of reasoning) thought, if we’ll accept that a situation really can be healed, we’ll find healthy outlets for our thinking (look to Leonine energies as well as those Houses in the natal chart ruled by Mercury), as well as resolve conflicts that stretch tentacles below the surface of consciousness (Mercury trine Uranus, square Sedna, nov Hygeia, and qnx Chiron)

Today’s word image is an ancient Greek vase. A ‘container’ from the past can be useful now; look to what gave shape, form, restraint to the thinking or the life previously, and consider using this method once again, if only temporarily, to contain what might otherwise overwhelm.

For those born with the Sun at 5 Leo: the state of the health, and ‘healthy’ behaviors (or their rejection), will drive much of what occurs through the first half of the year–and the way you deal with this determines whether issues are eventually brought into the light and made to add to your power, or buried thoroughly, to act as a burr under the skin. You know which is better, right? Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

The AstroEssence: It may feel today as if what’s smart is relative, and in a way, that’s right: viewpoint defines our ideas of wisdom, practicality, and ‘right thinking’. That should tell you there’s no Universal ‘right answer’ at the moment, only what’s right for the individual; too, our focus may be on what’s not working, rather than what is, with a tendency to be overly critical because we’ve lost perspective–and if you are criticizing something or someone for a lack of practicality, re-frame it as a statement of wisdom, and the other way around, criticism of something as unwise needs to be seen through a lens of practicality. Be lenient in your judgments of others, and allow them the same freedom to choose as you demand for yourself. (Sun qnx Pallas)

Egon Schiele - 'Edith with Striped Dress, Sitting' 1915 {{PD}}

Egon Schiele – ‘Edith with Striped Dress, Sitting’ 1915 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is stripes. Stripe patterns are a meshing of two distinct colors that ‘work together’ without losing their uniqueness. We also talk about ‘a different stripe’ meaning something of great contrast to something else, and we talk about how a tiger can’t change its stripes, meaning something has a nature that cannot be modified. One of these may apply to something in your life–two things working together but distinct, something that is what it is, no matter how we’d like to see it–or it may just be that when you see stripes you need to note what’s going on around you, for future reference.

For those born with the Sun at 4 Leo: emotional crisis that could lead to material upset kicks off your year, through to your next birthday, and health and/ or ‘habits’ need attention–what was smart for you in the past no longer is, and yet I don’t mean to be negative–it’s in dealing with these stresses early in the year that you will gain your power. All denied or hidden matters will be sorted, and those things that enrage you will be righted or eliminated, leaving you in a strong position to have and to shape things exactly as you like. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!
