The AstroEssence: Uranus retrogrades today at 24 Aries 30, and begins backing toward a trine with Venus that perfects in just two days. This suggests a review of both the originality/ uniqueness and the erratic nature or unreliability of our own actions and choices (Uranus in Aries). We measure their worth, their effect on relationships and finances, and we look at how well they serve our own ends and interests (Venus in Leo). Matters of health in any form may figure in to your re-assessment (Venus semi-sq Hygeia); we won’t be able to unsee what we notice about ourselves at this time, so better to take the matter in hand and do something about it. Modern or unusual methods might provide the answers, though it may take some time (through the retrograde, perhaps?) to come to that conclusion. Look to feel this most strongly, at least initially, in the House with Aquarius on the cusp.

Our Uranian considerations may be part of a larger trend toward smart thinking and wise planning that we somehow find difficult to enact. Knowing what’s right may be easy, but making choices or taking actions that support that knowledge may create conflict or in some way prove tough. Finding a way isn’t impossible, though, and indications are this will come clear by the 31st. (Mercury parallel Pallas and sq Mars)

Today’s word image is an angry person venting their anger at the ‘wrong’ Other. If we are avoiding expressing ourselves directly to the person who stirs these emotions in us, then we must consider that we are, for any number of reasons, not being honest with ourselves or with the Universe–and the result is often misdirected animus. Own your feelings, and know that there is a certain amount of choice involved; when we pretend that emotions ‘just happen’, and so in significant ways take us over, we are denying the important point that the feeling couldn’t exist for more than an instant unless we focus on it and feed it–and that is very much a choice.

The AstroEssence: Attention is on health, and that covers a lot of ground, depending on your focus: mental, physical, emotional, spiritual. We are likely to be critical of what we see (Jup in Virgo) especially in terms of externals, of the health of the social order (Jupiter again), but what we need to know is that what we’re seeing, and the origin of our focus, is really us, at a personal level; what we complain of, admire, or desire in matters of health and see in others (Hygeia in Libra) are really statements about ourselves and our responses and reactions to our environment (Sun in Leo). It may be dismissed as simplistic, but what we see out there is definitely what we’re carrying inside, so that externals guide us as to our own need to modify, clear, and make healthy (Perfecting today: Sun sextile Hygeia and semi-square Jupiter)

Today’s word image is a red flower and a stone. What kind of impulse do you have to interact with the two? Is the first thing you think of to smash the flower with the stone? To move the stone so the flower may grow and expand? To put the flower in your hair and the stone in your pocket? To leave them just as they are? To wonder what those two things are doing there? There’s a loose Water Grand Trine with Vesta, Juno, and Pallas, all in very early degrees of their respective signs. This offers the balancing of what’s smart, what’s empowering, and what’s sacred to us through the emotions. In this case, getting the emotions under control (the early degrees of a sign can be raw and chaotic) will bring about the balancing. Whatever you’re reacting strongly to can be sorted successfully by asking: What’s the wise choice here? What supports my feelings of effectiveness as well as my highest values? This should tame and direct the passions, as well as soothe what may be a highly overwrought (and so inaccurate) perception of what’s going on.

The AstroEssence: If we’ll accept the unusual idea, the radical (compared to our current way of reasoning) thought, if we’ll accept that a situation really can be healed, we’ll find healthy outlets for our thinking (look to Leonine energies as well as those Houses in the natal chart ruled by Mercury), as well as resolve conflicts that stretch tentacles below the surface of consciousness (Mercury trine Uranus, square Sedna, nov Hygeia, and qnx Chiron)

Today’s word image is an ancient Greek vase. A ‘container’ from the past can be useful now; look to what gave shape, form, restraint to the thinking or the life previously, and consider using this method once again, if only temporarily, to contain what might otherwise overwhelm.

For those born with the Sun at 5 Leo: the state of the health, and ‘healthy’ behaviors (or their rejection), will drive much of what occurs through the first half of the year–and the way you deal with this determines whether issues are eventually brought into the light and made to add to your power, or buried thoroughly, to act as a burr under the skin. The AstroEssence: It may feel today as if what’s smart is relative, and in a way, that’s right: viewpoint defines our ideas of wisdom, practicality, and ‘right thinking’. That should tell you there’s no Universal ‘right answer’ at the moment, only what’s right for the individual; too, our focus may be on what’s not working, rather than what is, with a tendency to be overly critical because we’ve lost perspective–and if you are criticizing something or someone for a lack of practicality, re-frame it as a statement of wisdom, and the other way around, criticism of something as unwise needs to be seen through a lens of practicality. Today’s word image is stripes. Stripe patterns are a meshing of two distinct colors that ‘work together’ without losing their uniqueness. We also talk about ‘a different stripe’ meaning something of great contrast to something else, and we talk about how a tiger can’t change its stripes, meaning something has a nature that cannot be modified. One of these may apply to something in your life–two things working together but distinct, something that is what it is, no matter how we’d like to see it–or it may just be that when you see stripes you need to note what’s going on around you, for future reference.

Today’s word image is standing in a very long line, not knowing what it’s a line for! It sounds like a joke, but in the Soviet era there were stories about how as soon as people saw a line forming, they got in it–it didn’t really matter what it was for, as one could trade the goods if they weren’t of use. What are you waiting for, and do you even know if you’re in the right line for the thing you want?

The AstroEssence: Relationships challenge us, specifically over values or the way we feel, and both interactions and money matters excavate areas of feeling and intent we’ve long thought set in stone. Thoughts strive for the ‘healthy’ approach, whatever that means to the individual, but communications and our own reasoning processes repeatedly point out our less-than-positive habits and tendencies; there’s no glossing things over and ignoring the ugly parts, the potential for damage, or the dangers, which shimmer vividly before us as we light the cigarette or run toward the cliff wearing our homemade parachute. Tips for handling what comes at us: value change–that is, find the rewards in it; accept that all relationships have a dark side, and that even a dream job or earning opportunity asks us to exchange a little of our power in order to skirt ‘death’ (think symbolically); and know that all of us are trying to purge our minds and concentrate on what’s positive, what thoughts and ideas will build us up–but in purging, all that dross has to go somewhere, so step carefully (Venus qnx Pluto, Mercury semi-sq Hygeia)

Today‘s word image is a hungry rabbit with very big teeth! Despite the cartoon-y nature of the image, what we’re seeing is something normally harmless that could take quite a bite out of us if motivated. Temperaments fluctuate, dispositions morph and change; watch for the unexpected, aggressive ‘hunger’ from a quarter that’s normally passive, or more often seen as victim than aggressor. Today’s word image is a book cipher. How clear is your communication? Do you ‘encrypt’ things out of an unwillingness to embrace your own desires, hoping to get others to take the initiative, or is it a matter of fear at being ‘seen’? The AstroEssence: Today the Sun enters Leo, putting the focus on ourselves, and it’s a subtle case of a pair of Fingers of God that permeate thoughts and may allow reasoning to be altered, despite a less-than-desirable influence created by the social sphere or the facts (Jupiter contra-parallel Hygeia–and this may usher in a few public health crises, besides). Each of the Fingers includes Mercury, one as base with Zeus, apex the South Node, the other as apex itself, with base of Pluto-South Node (and in some ways we ought to consider Venus as part of the ‘Mercury effect’, since it is both closer in aspect to the Node than Mercury, and widely conjoined the Messenger). These are both a little loose, but noteworthy as the inconjunct of Merc to Pluto and the sextile of Merc to Zeus perfect today.

In Merc-Venus sxt Zeus apex SN, we have ideas and thoughts centered on the worth and talents of the Self and the ambitions and goals fixed firmly on the past; we look at the origins of our development and our viewpoint, and consider how this experience has shaped us (and for some, it will feel very limiting; the tendency may be to blame the past for current situations and future prospects).

With Merc-Venus as the apex to a Finger with base of SN-Pluto, we may transform, in our own minds and interpretations, the past and its effects, thereby ‘freeing’ or otherwise reforming the thought processes and the understanding of our own skills, opening the way to create a future without the limits we’ve carried up to now.

The two Fingers work in concert: one shows us how we’ve proceeded, how we’ve viewed ourselves and our potentials, up to now, the other allows us to actually draw power from the past, by re-processing our perceptions of it, and thereby giving us a future much more in tune with our current Beingness and outlook. So that’s good.

Today’s word image is a spider living within a bunch of grapes on the vine. At first we might think this image indicates something nefarious within something positive or desirable or wholesome–but I look at it another way: the spider lives between the grapes and doesn’t harm them, in fact it keeps other bugs from doing damage. It allows the grapes to grow and ripen without invasion by creatures that would destroy them. What in your life that you’re automatically regarding as bad or negative is actually doing a service, serving a purpose, and doing no harm?

For those born with the Sun at 00 Leo the coming Solar year, through to your next birthday, brings difficult situations that will determine the balance of power, personal influence, and depth of your commitment to both yourself and others–and all of it requires flexibility in feeling, a willingness to respond appropriately to real-world changes in circumstances, to what’s known or discovered, and to what’s shared/ owned–but don’t worry, your intuition is turned up to High. The AstroEssence: We act and choose against our own instincts–why? We are resisting reality; following ideals and going for dreams doesn’t seem to have paid off, and now we are feeling let down, betrayed, unsupported by our personal Universe. Let’s shake off that myopia and align our thinking with the facts: it’s not that reality has failed to serve us, it’s we who have failed to respond to the true state of what is. We must re-examine dreams to see their real worth, what they’ll actually cost us, and willingly modify them to fit our real-life circumstances; do that, and genuine progress won’t be far behind (Mars opp Sedna, Venus qnx Neptune, Sun contra-parallel Saturn)

Today’s Word image is soft-serve vanilla ice cream in one of those cones that taste like paper. Love this or loathe it, it’s supposed to be a treat. What in your life that’s supposed to be a reward doesn’t feel that way? Are you going along with something as a reward, when it’s no reward for you? Or what do you like that could be loads better by just upgrading the ingredients? The AstroEssence: Our role in relationships, or our responsibility for finances, looms large; we get real-world feedback that either shows us our limits or delivers a solid manifestation of what we’ve put in to one or both of these Venusian venues. Past choices deliver current outcomes–and may wound, show us our weaknesses, or heal some hurt we held in our imaginations, rather than in reality (Chiron in Pisces). The good thing is that we gain, maybe socially, but definitely in tangible terms. Examine efforts and thinking in light of what past methods have produced; be willing to give up what doesn’t work–that only helps make room for more, and better (Venus trine Saturn, sesq Chiron, and nov Jupiter, Merc qnx SN and semi-sq Vesta, Sun sesq SN)

Today’s word image is an ironing board. This symbol of the housewife’s drudgery is something of an antique; new fabrics, steaming, more casual dress, and the proud display of wrinkles has taken this item out of daily use. You may have some personal associations with this–I see it as an example of something we all know now, that may soon pass so far out of use that coming generations won’t even know what it is–and that prompts examination of how the passage of time modifies our idea of what’s necessary, what’s useful.

For those born with the Sun at 28 Cancer the coming year promises an emotional ‘showdown’, a defining of the true emotional perceptions and state (and we know that may secure, alter, or otherwise bring change in any number of ways)–and there are also indications that everything that happens relates to you determining to whom and what you want to dedicate your life energy. You may find the perfect partner this year–or may re-dedicate yourself to the one you have. In any case, serious matters are sorted, and life determining directions chosen, whether this is done consciously or not (with the ‘not’ looking as if externals are pushing you in this direction or that, closing off and opening options, willy-nilly).
