'Deva and Gryphon', by Gustave Moreau {{PD}}

‘Deva and Gryphon’, by Gustave Moreau {{PD}}

Eclipses change things; we’ve got a Solar one (so, a New Moon) on September 12th at 11:41 PM Pacific time, at 20 Virgo 10. Everyone is stressed (Saturn at 29 Scorpio has no mercy, dredging up what we fear, dread, have carefully hidden from ourselves and others, threatening to bring it all into our reality, and so announce it to others, broadcasting our secrets far and wide–that last is the anticipation of the Old Man’s move into Sagittarius); everyone believes, consciously or not so, that this eclipse will wipe out that tension. I don’t think it will–but it may make things seem quite a bit different–and we will definitely gain.

Keeping our orbs tight, as always, we see that the New Moon is opposed Chiron–that is, Chiron is still within conjunction of the Earth. The NM also glances by quincunx off Uranus in Aries–and unless we stretch our orb to more than 3.5+ degrees, we get nothing else. But, that’s how we keep our eclipse picture sharp–and what this says is that NM beginnings may arise out of inconvenience or accident, out of needing to adjust to the group or to something new or modern, and out of this we come to understand something important–and this opens us to healing some area where we have been too critical, too immersed in detail, so that we have lost the true breadth of the situation (with the subject particular to the House in the natal chart where the eclipse falls for you).

I don’t want to muddy the eclipse picture by making the orbs too big, but there are two things that seem worthy of note, if only by their symmetry and proximity to the eclipse degree. One is the Earth Grand Trine involving Juno-Sedna-Ceres (and if we are generous, the New Moon eclipse)=this promises a certain balance within the natural world that offers empowerment to those who ‘tune in’. Being in sync with the elements (and the elementals) may be the way the understanding we reach at the New Moon is made known to us. We may feel or sense it, absorb it from the very air or through our skin–we ‘know’ with a certainty the mind just can’t offer.

John Atkinson Grimshaw {{PD}}

John Atkinson Grimshaw {{PD}}

The second related body is the wide square from Pallas in Sagittarius to the eclipse point. If we cling to what we think is wise, if we rely on the mind and things we’ve learned or been told, we may be in for a shock; that is the very kind of knowledge that could get blown out of the water with the eclipse. We are being shown a picture where the senses are more accurate than the mind–believe what you feel, not what you are told, or think.

The Sabian Symbol for the eclipse is, ‘A Girls’ Basketball Team’. This is a modern symbol for anima energies working together. We see this hinted at with the inclusion of Uranus (the group or team), in the location of the event in Virgo (the sign of cooperative effort that brings results, ‘the harvest’), and in the way so many goddess energies are lingering just outside the eclipse orb: Juno, Sedna, Ceres, Pallas, bringing skill, instinct, personal authority, and wisdom to what the eclipse reveals.

Expect ‘Vesta’ any minute–and by ‘minute’, I mean day šŸ™‚

'EntenhƤuser' (Duck Houses) by August Haake c1914 {{PD}}

‘EntenhƤuser’ (Duck Houses) by August Haake c1914 {{PD}}

The Full Moon begins at 5:05 AM Pacific time April 4th at 14 Libra 24, with the eclipse starting about half a minute later. The Sabian for the meeting of Earth and Moon is, ā€˜Circular Paths’. I’m anticipating that we’ll find ourselves some ā€˜place’ we’ve been before, but now with a whole different viewpoint and skill set. This has as many possible manifestations as there are people, but the common denominator will definitely be that we have seen, faced, or dealt with either the same or a very similar situation before—and we don’t get a ā€˜do over’ so much as a chance to, in some way, replace the vibe around our handling of the event, so that what we ā€˜write’ energetically into the Universal record is much more in accord with who we are now. It’s a re-ordering of the Karma surrounding the situation—and in effect, changes both the future and the past, from our vantage point in the now.

We look too at the Sun for a Full Moon/ Lunar event, and the Sabian is, ā€˜An Indian Weaving A Ceremonial Blanket’. This suggests that the causal event or energy is one involved in the individual preparation for a serious ritual. That could be anything, any effort at Self-improvement, any spiritual practice, any creative act that has at its center both Soul expression and Soul evolution. The intent is a pure one, and carries a kind of energy imprint into the world, and into the ordering of circumstances. It’s the shining of the personal Sun, making an impact through a Universal event.

‘A Casting from Life’

Your creative impulse has perhaps been forced to take a back seat for awhile–but not anymore, dear Aries. The creative urge within is building momentum, and you may find, consciously or not, that you are seeking a form into which to pour that spark, a way to translate the energy into a shape others can perceive–but at this point, creating may seem like a distraction. You are currently busy handling things, people, and events formed in the past, and the need to deal with these, to settle, eliminate, transform, or accept them once and for all is strong; what you may not realize is that the die is already cast in this area. You already know how you feel about, and what you want to do about, each particular thing–it only feels unresolved because you’ve been dragging your feet, slow to take action–but that hesitation should be over, at this time. Through to your next birthday, you can wrap up what was and no longer needs to be, and bring your creative goals into focus–all it takes is a willingness ‘to do’. Happy Birthday, Aries, and good luck!

If you’re looking for a little something about the effect of eclipses on people born close to them, please see here and scroll down the home page for more on the previous Solar eclipse and the upcoming Lunar one. Thanks!

Now that the Solar eclipse has occurred, we can pick up the pieces and look ahead–to the Lunar eclipse of 4 April. I’ve referred to the upcoming Lunar eclipse as a ‘drop the microphone’ event, one where we’ll experience the true impact of this period, if not immediately then in circumstances that begin their development at this point. Wherever the Lunar eclipse at 14 Libra 24 falls for you may only be the tip of the iceberg–because the Lunar-Solar-Earth axis creates a T-square with Pluto that is likely to bring Underworld extremes to the surface through conflict, destruction, and yes, transformation that can be as drastic as a hormonal change or a house burning down or as deeply meaningful as taking spiritual vows or having an epiphany that changes your entire Being. The Sabian Symbol for the event is ‘Circular Paths’, suggesting we may be coming full circle in some important way. So what do you think?

What You’re Asking–Mermaids, Mercury’s Birth, and Peacocks–Delicious!

John William Waterhouse - 'Mermaid' {{PD}}

John William Waterhouse – ‘Mermaid’ {{PD}}

This is a re-print I thought you might find interesting, as it talks about both the Fist of God, a config involved in the upcoming Solar eclipse, and about the effects of an eclipse that conjuncts the natal South Node. ā€˜What You’re Asking’ is taken from search terms (shown in italics) used to bring seekers to this site, and I’ve modified the Full Moon answer below to reflect the next one that we’ll see, a Lunar eclipse.

mermaids and full moon

Let’s answer this one first, as an excuse to use that beautiful Waterhouse portrait of a mermaid: of course they exist, and if you’re lucky enough to see one, it’ll probably be under a Full Moon–just seems right. The next one comes at 5 April, 5:06 AM Pacific time, and falls at 14 Libra 24. Find the perfect beach, then when the day comes stake it out (you’ll be ‘up with the fishes’!) preferably with a picnic and someone you love to keep you company, and wait for the magic to happen.

astrology fist of god

A configuration where the base is two or more bodies square each other, with all base components sesquiquadrate (135 degrees) from the apex body. Typically this presents as an initial conflict between the base energies that, once resolved (or at least is brought to some kind of equilibrium) then results in another hurdle, described by the conflict between the disparate points of view of the base bodies and the apex body–so we officially have three viewpoints to juggle, and possibly to blend/ resolve. Often this generates both intense internal tension and stressful outward situations, and just as with a ā€˜regular’ square, we can’t ignore that initial clash of the base energies–they demand attention, and once they’ve gotten some, the apex energy makes demands, and this is so whether we’ve successfully resolved the base energies or not. We can really feel it’s being piled on when a Fist of God (some prefer Thor’s Hammer) is activated, but the thing to remember is this: don’t let the stress run the show; nine times out of ten, a Fist presents issues that are in some essential way unresolvable (at least, if formed or activated by transit, unresolvable in the moment and solely by you), and you’ll gain a great deal by taking a step back and recognizing that this may be a riddle that, right now, has no totally satisfying answer.

Saturn square Pluto

As a natal aspect, this is weighty; it pits the darkest and most powerful personal elements of the Self against the personal elements most slavish to custom, fearful of authority, locked into rules, hidebound, and conventional. The alchemical nature of Pluto requires almost constant change, either through destruction and resurrection or replacement, or through transformation, while Saturn is all about keeping things just as they’ve always been. So, we’re likely to see this clash as a recurring theme in the life of someone who has this in the horoscope, and this is likely to express with the individual balancing the two awkwardly (gently committing a little more to one or the other) until something forces an impossible choice or requires the two factors to work together–and the energies can be reconciled, if the individual knows both her or his own power (Pluto) and is firmly in touch with reality (Saturn) and as well has mastered at least a modicum of Self-discipline (also Saturn). We can’t overlook the fact that this unites two or more Houses of the natal chart, the ones with Scorpio and Capricorn (and possibly Aquarius, as Saturn was its ancient ruler) on the cusp; the nature of this connection will be one where some of the matters of the Houses will face this same status quo vs. regeneration challenge, possibly repeatedly, until the individual reaches a final, working relationship between the two energies, giving neither one short-shrift in the life.

pallas in scorpio

As a natal placement, this promises that one’s internalized wisdom is deep; there may be a sense of intuitive ā€˜knowing’ from an early age. Guidance may spring from getting to know darkness (one’s own or the workings of darkness within the world), and from a strong sense of curiosity, the kind that will research fearlessly for the answer. The person with this placement may understand emotion and the wisdom behind its expression, or may glean knowledge from emotional experience, and Pallas in Scorpio may have a kind of x-ray vision, seeing to the Truth of any matter. Positive manifestations show wisdom based in a thorough understanding and acceptance of the life-death-life scenario, while a negative expression could come in the form of the Evil Queen who offers others a poisoned apple (tainted guidance), out of malice, jealousy, or the desire to destroy.

peacock to eat

I just had to Google this myself; Juno prefers these majestic birds pulling her chariot, and would flip out if she saw a mortal eating the bird that represents her (which is, I think, why this query showed up at my site, due to some mention of Juno and her mascot). I was curious: do people eat peacock? There’s this, which describes preparation of peacock in medieval Europe. Of course, about half the answers that Google gave reversed the scenario, as if I’d asked what peacocks eat; the most entertaining (and somehow unnerving–whoĀ isĀ this person?) was on Yahoo Answers: and I quote, ā€ i used to raise peacocks and lemme tell you they are some good eatin.ā€ And end scene.

south node solar eclipse

This seems a very compelling event, with the power and intense energy of a Solar eclipse meeting the point in the natal chart that designates ā€˜the past’ (one’s memories, experiences, all that is residue of what was for the Soul). The result could be a breaking-free from old habits, obligations, or restrictions, especially those that are imposed through outdated roles or occurrences that no longer have resonance; residue of memory and the interference of others could fall away in a single instant. One could even have one’s memory wiped clean, through something as soap opera-y as amnesia or as life-changing as a stroke, or where a version of the past is removed from the life quite literally, as when a tornado destroys everything one owns. It could be much simpler, and entirely internal, as when the eclipse illuminates something from the past that has been unavailable or hidden; one finds out about one’s own adoption, perhaps, or learns of a family secret that lifts the veil on some important mental viewpoint or emotional response to their own origins or experience. There’s also the potential for actualizing all accumulated knowledge in some form that allows it to flow into the future and manifest in some wise and divine creation, as if lightning has struck all that was for the individual and crystallized it into a single, shimmering idea that one is destined to deliver to the world. Just remember to keep the orbs very tight; for this aspect I would prefer 1.5 degrees or less in variation from exact.

Juno’s response to Mercury’s birth

ā€œIt’s a bay-bee!ā€

(Possibly as spoken by Julia Sweeney’s ā€˜Saturday Night Live’ character, ā€˜Pat’)

Have a wonderful weekend!

For a variety of individuals, this eclipse, at 00 Scorpio, may fall on a natal body, and for large numbers of people, it may fall on slow-moving natal Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto. For eclipse contact by conjunction, use no more than a 3 degree orb no matter which natal body or point is involved. Of course, this links the eclipse ‘New Start’ to the planet’s expression, but also to the House(s) ruled by the planet in the natal chart; watch the matters of this/ these House(s) over the coming 6 months, through to the next eclipse set. The matters of these Houses are where that wise and valuable beginning offered by this eclipse is likely to make big effects felt. Considering this event falls in Scorpio, we may be looking for a new beginning that is something of a resurrection or re-birth, an echo of what was in a new form. In any case, a beneficial birth, no matter the outer trappings it arrives in.

Have a wonderful eclipse!

Rudolf Koller 1856 {{PD}}

Rudolf Koller 1856 {{PD}}

I think of the two weeks between eclipses as a kind of valley; we can’t see clearly over the mountain behind us, to where we’ve just been, and we can’t see what’s over the mountain ahead of us, either. In the human animal this builds tension, as we fear being trapped in this situation indefinitely; anything could surprise us, and we are very aware of that! In traversing the current valley between the eclipses, we scan the horizon for aid and opportunity (Sun sextile Jupiter) and we look intently for what we should do, how we should act (Sun sextile Mars), and we do all of it with our fate, the direction we’re traveling in life (Sun conjunct North Node), front and center in our (confused–Merc retro) thoughts.

There is nothing unusual in this tension between eclipses; it’s one of the reasons we anticipate their arrival with such dread. We know in our bones, remember in our nerve endings and muscles and psyche, how very stressful the last round was. And yet, there isn’t much we can do about this feeling. In the current situation we’ve just been through an ending, or had the inevitable ending of something signaled loud and clear (the Lunar eclipse of the 8th), and even if we knew this was coming, it was hard; we likely had to admit something about ourselves and what we want (Aries placement) that we had been avoiding up ’til now. This was an area (signified by the House where the eclipse fell) that we may have been controlling, trying to control, or telling ourselves we were controlling–and suddenly we must face that our Will controls absolutely nothing outside our own skin (and not even all inside of that!)

The new start we get on the 23rd (the Solar eclipse) can be summed up as offering a beginning that is ‘wise and valuable’–and that’s so whether we see it as such or not! That doesn’t make our anticipation any less tense, though; it’s like the stress of bringing home a new baby, getting engaged, winning the lottery. In spite of the fact that it’s one of the best things that can happen to us, we still experience a great deal of upset, pressure, unforeseen effects, and our responsibility–our need to respond–is tested and stretched and drains us of energy and initiative right at the point when we need it most. Knowing that something like this is coming can grate on us terribly–but knowing that’s the case, and knowing there’s nothing to be done about it, should free us. We can safely ignore much of what’s troubling us now–whatever needs facing will come to us, with the eclipse in Scorpio, representing a raw kind of truth at 00 of the sign–and it will open the way to a new beginning–and most of us would really welcome one of those right about now.

'Cornstalks in the Moonlight' Theodor Kittelsen c1900 {{PD}}

‘Cornstalks in the Moonlight’ Theodor Kittelsen c1900 {{PD}}

The eclipse of 15 April falls at 25 Libra 15, and is a Full Moon (Lunar eclipse), conjunct transiting energies Ceres, North Node, and Vesta, opposed t Juno, quincunx t Sedna, sesquiquadrate t Venus, and sextile t Pallas. On its own the eclipse suggests a watershed point in partnership, cooperative efforts, artistic endeavors, and in regard to ‘the Other’, everything and everyone outside ourselves. A Full Moon brings an ending, but within this is found a new beginning; this particular culmination/ beginning is amplified by an eclipse, and married (so Libra!) to Nature/ Authority (Ceres), the future (NN), and to an impeccable level of dedication of life energy (Vesta)–it is, in effect, a relational seed point that carries a walloping life force–and this contradicts the kind of puny, Willful, egotistical sense of empowerment that may be found in negative manifestation of Juno in Aries (opposition), as well as causing adjustment to the unconscious (Sedna) and cooperation with what’s ultimately wise (Pallas). The Sabian for this eclipse is, ‘An Eagle And A Large White Dove Change Into Each Other’ This symbolism implies that the ‘other’ focus of Libra involves an actual transformation of one half of a pair into the other, and vice versa; what we are observing or are partnered with, then, becomes what we are.

The Solar eclipse occurs April 28-29 (depending on your location) at 8 Taurus 51, a New Moon that only sextiles Neptune; everything else is outside even a generous orb, with Mercury just days past Superior Conjunction (if this were moving toward the eclipse point I would consider counting it) and Mars, though moving retrograde, outside the orb for a quincunx. That lays it all on Neptune and the Sabian for this eclipse, ‘A Fully Decorated Christmas Tree’. The New Moon, eclipse or not, also indicates new starts; so, we’re looking at a new beginning that may be born of ideals, fantasy, or creative application (Neptune), and that could represent (the Christmas tree) a time of celebration, could usher in an ‘ideal’ period, or present the beginning of a personal creative initiative (birth) or renaissance (re-birth). We’re looking at a pair of factors (the Sabian and Neptune) that describe personal ideals–but particularly with the Sabian, we have to note that the celebration is based on our relationship to the unseen, on faith. It’s not related to any specific religion, but instead on our individual idea of a kind of ‘perfect moment’, the kind that memories are built on and that are striven for consistently in everyday life.

The first eclipse of the set is Lunar (a Full Moon) and falls at 25 Aries 45, arriving at 4:38 PM PDT (and for those of you who are tickled by synchronicities, I called the chart program up at precisely 4:38 PM, so that when I went to the correct day, there was the eclipse, already perfected!) We use, of course, our very strict orbs (that always somehow seem to get stretched!) so that the only aspect made is a quincunx to Ceres.

The singular event for this Lunar eclipse centers on a Full Aries Moon that is in uncomfortable aspect to the asteroid named for the goddess in control of the seasons, of nature itself, and with a powerful sense of territoriality and the strength to negotiate with even the most formidable opponents (in Ceres’ case, that was Pluto).

An Aries Full Moon marks the culmination of personal, individual effort, making a statement of the ‘I Am’ in no uncertain terms; we expect this statement in the natal House where the FM falls, and it’s purpose is Self-assessment, through a lens of completion: ‘I know I am ‘x’, because I have done ‘y”.

The Ceres quincunx suggests that the eclipse event of ‘I Am’ must take into account some power player, perhaps a woman of influence or authority, perhaps simply a human-shaped force of nature, or possibly an entity that feels they have say over our world, to the point of dictating our circumstances or negotiating our permissions, or another with whom we must ourselves negotiate in determining territory and reach. It may be someone from whom we have sought ‘permission’ of one kind or another at some point, who still believes your Self-statement is subject to their approval. It’s one of Ceres’ less endearing traits that someone strongly identified with this role may not clearly see her own legitimate boundaries–and this is something those involved with the lady (no matter what form she comes in) nearly always must negotiate for themselves–in this way contact with Ceres may challenge us to establish our boundaries to others, to announce our territory, or to say what or who we have dominion over–certainly an ‘I Am’ statement of the first order.

To see the complete eclipse report for both upcoming Lunar and Solar events, please subscribe!

Just a thought, morning of the 17th: Should we expect Mother Nature to act up? Maybe–with Ceres in Virgo, earthquakes may be the thing, but does fiery Aries promise lava? We’ll see! Sounds like a ‘scorched earth’ policy, in some important sense.

Lunar Eclipse 24 May 2013: ‘The End of the Illusion’

‘Allegorical Portrait of Anna of Austria as Minerva’ by Simon Vouet c1640 {{PD-Art}}

The final eclipse in a series of three occurs 24 May at 9:24:55 PM PDT at 4 Sagittarius 08, with the only aspect a square to Neptune. Since a Lunar eclipse is a Full Moon, we would naturally look for the conclusion of something; in this instance, though, we have the energy of a T-square as the primary outlet, suggesting that any resolution realized will be funneled into Neptunian results, events, or will be met with a Neptune-focused consciousness. Whatever concludes for us will spur Neptunian expression of a kind that is most characteristic of our natal Neptune. That means that though we may intend to be creative, to do dream explorations, to begin a regular meditation practice, or to sleep a full 8 hours every night, for example, we may instead find ourselves chasing a recurring fantasy (Sagittarius related, so focused on an educational, religious, travel, reaching out/ publishing/ broadcasting or foreign influences/ destinations scenario, or in the matters of the natal House with Sag on the cusp), being lied to once again, confused, or back on the same creative or delusional path.

What we thought had ended a month ago (let’s call it our belief that something wasn’t possible) is now being faced as possible, with all the tribulations involved apparent. So, we were notified at the initial Lunar eclipse of this set that the dream really was possible, and now we are being shown the nitty-gritty of how to do it–that is, if we’ll only refuse to be caught in characteristic Neptunian ideas, escapes, or avoidances. The month since the initial eclipse has presented us with every potential conflict in relation to realizing that dream, symbolized by the T-square of Neptune to the eclipse axis. We are now, with this eclipse, seeing the end of the illusion: we see what it takes to reach our ‘impossible’ goal–which is to say, we are truly, at this time, equipped to pursue and achieve it.

The Sabian Symbol is ‘An Old Owl Sits Alone On The Branch Of A Large Tree’.Ā  This draws my attention to Pallas, which happens to be body of latest degree at 27 Taurus 52, and which receives a conjunction from Mars. This suggests we look to the spot in the natal chart where the eclipse falls, or where Pallas transits, for the wisdom needed to act, even to fight, in order to pursue our dream.
