Were you engulfed in the drama yesterday, or did you just watch it roll by, cool and measured in response? Our reaction to what was presented was nothing so much as a measure of our own emotional health, and if we fell down, what we need today is some unconditional Love–and luckily, it’s scheduled. You’ll be offered loving thoughts, and you can offer these to others, too–and be ready, as accepting the Love offered could challenge one or more of your standards, could cause you to see others in a new, less judgmental light–and that’s good, as it opens your world just a little bit more. However, the one thing we should all do is keep our advice to ourselves (and look at me, right here, offering advice!) It seems we’ll all have a somewhat skewed view of reality at present, with too much emphasis on difficulties and obstacles, and that means what we tell others in an attempt to aid them won’t effectively apply to the real-world picture–it may be too pessimistic by half–in fact, receiving skewed advice from others may cause us to change our views of the individual who offered it, or to take destructive steps, because what’s told us is so out of alignment that the effect our actions create is negligible (and so ineffective) or unanticipatible, in terms of results.

By contrast, choices we make on our own, without the input of others, go very well. Make the most of this Self-driven action, because it can offer us material empowerment in a form we hadn’t thought about before, and because what we need to do to make a difference, to make change happen, to wipe out something negative, is crystal clear, ready and waiting for us to take the first step. (Perfecting today: Fist of God-Saturn sq Merc, apex Vesta; Mercury conj Venus; Mars trine Saturn; Pluto sesq Merc and qnx Sun; Earth qnx Juno)

See my books here; the Vesta book should be available within one-two weeks. Have a great Thursday!

Gustave Doré 'Andromeda' 1869 {{PD}}

Gustave Doré ‘Andromeda’ 1869 {{PD}}

Moment of meeting of the Sun and Moon occurs at 2:37 AM PDT of the 20th at 29 Pisces 27, with the eclipse officially beginning just a hair after. The New Moon makes a wide sextile to Ceres, and a square to Pallas, which fills in the base of a Fist of God, apex Jupiter, and also creates a T-square with the Sun-Moon/ Earth axis; a panoply of ancient gods are involved, each having a say in what is born at this time, each contact suggesting that what came before with that energy is eclipsed, wiped out, or superseded. The NM is a conception point, the placement of which (in the 29th degree) signals that a new beginning is coming at a point of supreme stress; things must reach maximum tension in order for the new beginning to form at all. That means that some who are able to avoid that point of nearly unbearable strain may not receive the kind of wipe-out and new start that those who almost drown (this is a Water event, after all) will; theirs may be much more subtle, with changes playing out over the six months between this event and the next Solar eclipse.

The change is gentle with Ceres, which represents our personal authority, power, territory, a somewhat maternal inclination to overstep boundaries, and our capacity to negotiate (which at least in part rests in our own confidence; someone frightened or powerless surrenders or attacks—someone personally empowered negotiates). We adjust our boundaries, perhaps re-assign territories or re-claim some of our own, and we may take a step back (or forward) concerning relationships where caretaking and responsibility lie at least somewhat in our sphere. Too, the presence of Ceres in the equation can suggest that Nature itself will exert an influence, whether through external circumstances (flood or fires, for instance) or internal ones (such as hormonal changes, diet, or illness/ imbalance), and that these will play into events.

The T that Pallas forms with the Sun-Moon/ Earth is naturally tense; it takes the stress of a Solar eclipse, ups the ante with the event forming at 29 degrees, and then challenges the entire event with a question: Is this wise? The ‘this’ refers to whatever previous guidelines we navigated by and the way the eclipse brings them into question, or even obliterates them, proving them unwise or currently untenable. Pallas is in Sagittarius, so may imply that new information, facts, or exposure to another way of being or doing turns our ‘wisdom world view’ on its head; there’s also the chance that Pallas refers to practical or skill-based options that change with the eclipse event. Acquisition of new knowledge or skills may make old ones obsolete or make something that was once practical no longer so.

Remember, Pallas is a Warrior by birth, so we may come out fighting at the suggestion that what we thought was wise really isn’t, anymore; being nothing so much as skilled means that Pallas, after the first aggressive response, will likely look to her skill set to handle what comes forward. Realizing that even wisdom can be conditional, or can change with circumstances, is important in dealing with the kind of curve-ball the T will throw at us.

Pallas is also part of the base of the Fist; the T and the Fist may address two different Pallas in Sag related matters or may speak of just one that has several facets. A Fist of God can be as harsh as it sounds—it can represent a hard situation or conflict (the base square) that results in the apex, and whether that’s a positive outcome or a further frustration is often up to us. In this case, with the eclipse itself square Pallas as the initiating tension, we will likely see a New Moon event that challenges our ideas of wisdom and practicality (much like with the T), but the difference will be that resolution of this particular upset will either offer us entré to a wider social circle, will bring acquisition of new knowledge, philosophy, or belief, or could offer opportunity—the problem being that this may be forced on us, and feel more like punishment than a positive!

Jupiter is of course the supreme god, at least as far as those who gather on Mt. Olympus are concerned. As significator of the Fist outcome, this may suggest we feel very much at the mercy of some larger entity, something like society, which seems to call all the shots. It’s vital to remember at this time that this is a perception only; we are still able to fashion our individual choices and responses independent of the social sphere, should we truly want to—but making that choice holds consequences that we must be prepared to accept, should we go our own way.

This is an excerpt from the Solar eclipse article in ECLIPSE. Of course, we’re in Dark of the Moon territory right now, with Luna still to contact (by conjunction) Vesta, Mercury, Neptune, and Chiron before the Solar event–and that may mean a lot of restless energy, whispers just below hearing, looking for a place to express. This can be a very creative time, for those open to manifesting the urge that usually remains quiet in the unconscious–it’s accessible now; it’s as if we’re able to see into the dark corners of the mind, sensing things, with no need for direct illumination–take a look, see what’s in there.

John William Waterhouse - 'Mermaid' {{PD}}

John William Waterhouse – ‘Mermaid’ {{PD}}

This is a re-print I thought you might find interesting, as it talks about both the Fist of God, a config involved in the upcoming Solar eclipse, and about the effects of an eclipse that conjuncts the natal South Node. ‘What You’re Asking’ is taken from search terms (shown in italics) used to bring seekers to this site, and I’ve modified the Full Moon answer below to reflect the next one that we’ll see, a Lunar eclipse.

mermaids and full moon

Let’s answer this one first, as an excuse to use that beautiful Waterhouse portrait of a mermaid: of course they exist, and if you’re lucky enough to see one, it’ll probably be under a Full Moon–just seems right. The next one comes at 5 April, 5:06 AM Pacific time, and falls at 14 Libra 24. Find the perfect beach, then when the day comes stake it out (you’ll be ‘up with the fishes’!) preferably with a picnic and someone you love to keep you company, and wait for the magic to happen.

astrology fist of god

A configuration where the base is two or more bodies square each other, with all base components sesquiquadrate (135 degrees) from the apex body. Typically this presents as an initial conflict between the base energies that, once resolved (or at least is brought to some kind of equilibrium) then results in another hurdle, described by the conflict between the disparate points of view of the base bodies and the apex body–so we officially have three viewpoints to juggle, and possibly to blend/ resolve. Often this generates both intense internal tension and stressful outward situations, and just as with a ‘regular’ square, we can’t ignore that initial clash of the base energies–they demand attention, and once they’ve gotten some, the apex energy makes demands, and this is so whether we’ve successfully resolved the base energies or not. We can really feel it’s being piled on when a Fist of God (some prefer Thor’s Hammer) is activated, but the thing to remember is this: don’t let the stress run the show; nine times out of ten, a Fist presents issues that are in some essential way unresolvable (at least, if formed or activated by transit, unresolvable in the moment and solely by you), and you’ll gain a great deal by taking a step back and recognizing that this may be a riddle that, right now, has no totally satisfying answer.

Saturn square Pluto

As a natal aspect, this is weighty; it pits the darkest and most powerful personal elements of the Self against the personal elements most slavish to custom, fearful of authority, locked into rules, hidebound, and conventional. The alchemical nature of Pluto requires almost constant change, either through destruction and resurrection or replacement, or through transformation, while Saturn is all about keeping things just as they’ve always been. So, we’re likely to see this clash as a recurring theme in the life of someone who has this in the horoscope, and this is likely to express with the individual balancing the two awkwardly (gently committing a little more to one or the other) until something forces an impossible choice or requires the two factors to work together–and the energies can be reconciled, if the individual knows both her or his own power (Pluto) and is firmly in touch with reality (Saturn) and as well has mastered at least a modicum of Self-discipline (also Saturn). We can’t overlook the fact that this unites two or more Houses of the natal chart, the ones with Scorpio and Capricorn (and possibly Aquarius, as Saturn was its ancient ruler) on the cusp; the nature of this connection will be one where some of the matters of the Houses will face this same status quo vs. regeneration challenge, possibly repeatedly, until the individual reaches a final, working relationship between the two energies, giving neither one short-shrift in the life.

pallas in scorpio

As a natal placement, this promises that one’s internalized wisdom is deep; there may be a sense of intuitive ‘knowing’ from an early age. Guidance may spring from getting to know darkness (one’s own or the workings of darkness within the world), and from a strong sense of curiosity, the kind that will research fearlessly for the answer. The person with this placement may understand emotion and the wisdom behind its expression, or may glean knowledge from emotional experience, and Pallas in Scorpio may have a kind of x-ray vision, seeing to the Truth of any matter. Positive manifestations show wisdom based in a thorough understanding and acceptance of the life-death-life scenario, while a negative expression could come in the form of the Evil Queen who offers others a poisoned apple (tainted guidance), out of malice, jealousy, or the desire to destroy.

peacock to eat

I just had to Google this myself; Juno prefers these majestic birds pulling her chariot, and would flip out if she saw a mortal eating the bird that represents her (which is, I think, why this query showed up at my site, due to some mention of Juno and her mascot). I was curious: do people eat peacock? There’s this, which describes preparation of peacock in medieval Europe. Of course, about half the answers that Google gave reversed the scenario, as if I’d asked what peacocks eat; the most entertaining (and somehow unnerving–who is this person?) was on Yahoo Answers: and I quote, ” i used to raise peacocks and lemme tell you they are some good eatin.” And end scene.

south node solar eclipse

This seems a very compelling event, with the power and intense energy of a Solar eclipse meeting the point in the natal chart that designates ‘the past’ (one’s memories, experiences, all that is residue of what was for the Soul). The result could be a breaking-free from old habits, obligations, or restrictions, especially those that are imposed through outdated roles or occurrences that no longer have resonance; residue of memory and the interference of others could fall away in a single instant. One could even have one’s memory wiped clean, through something as soap opera-y as amnesia or as life-changing as a stroke, or where a version of the past is removed from the life quite literally, as when a tornado destroys everything one owns. It could be much simpler, and entirely internal, as when the eclipse illuminates something from the past that has been unavailable or hidden; one finds out about one’s own adoption, perhaps, or learns of a family secret that lifts the veil on some important mental viewpoint or emotional response to their own origins or experience. There’s also the potential for actualizing all accumulated knowledge in some form that allows it to flow into the future and manifest in some wise and divine creation, as if lightning has struck all that was for the individual and crystallized it into a single, shimmering idea that one is destined to deliver to the world. Just remember to keep the orbs very tight; for this aspect I would prefer 1.5 degrees or less in variation from exact.

Juno’s response to Mercury’s birth

“It’s a bay-bee!”

Have a wonderful weekend!

We needn't be a grim today as 'Clytemnestra, after the murder' John Collier 1882 {{PD}}

We needn’t be as grim over these days as ‘Clytemnestra, after the murder’ John Collier 1882 {{PD}}

We’re coming up on a couple of really rough days; they don’t have to be too bad, though, if we know how to face them. These forecasts are from ECLIPSE:

30 October we are in denial about some important things: the inevitable supremacy of nature, our own wounds, our needs, the fact that we have a wild, primal part that may contain a few things our civilized side considers unflattering. We can’t move forward, can’t create the future we want, if we are carrying a load of shame over things that just are. Our mistake is in seeing these things as bad, when they simply exist. Stop rejecting part of yourself, believing that some plastic idea of who we should be is better than the stinking, caterwauling, lusciousness of a human being in three-dimensions. With Merc retro, now’s the time to practice loving ourselves as we are, without that pesky over-socialized brain getting in the way. (Saturn semi-square Ceres, Mars opposed Chiron, Venus quincunx Sedna, Sun conjunct NN)

31 October it’s time to deal–with values that aren’t truly our own and don’t support our empowerment, with aggression, competitiveness, egotism, and even hatred we’ve been sensing that may finally break out into the open today, with the need to tell someone how much we love them, and with the way the image we’ve been propagating betrays both our highest values and our real empowerment needs. Whew! That’s heavy, as we used to say. So how do we handle things? Centering ourselves at our core is really the only answer; that allows us to both stay true to ourselves and to deflect any ill-will someone else cooks up toward us out of their own misery. And don’t forget that part about sharing some loving feelings with someone else; if you happen to do that with the person running toward you with an axe, you just might discover you’ve found the recipe for world peace. We must note, a Fist of God with base of Earth-Juno and apex Vesta; this says that in order to live those highest values we must first see to our own material empowerment. Though it’s carrying water, chopping wood both before and after enlightenment, we must realize that it’s seeing to those physical needs that gives us the true freedom to honor our values. As someone said sometime: nobody cares about freedom when they’re hungry; living our values requires a willingness to deal with the physical, and with physical needs–there’s nothing spiritual about turning our noses up at our own humanness. ALERT: more incidents that feed into/ reflect the UR-PL square. (Mars trine Pluto and quincunx Uranus, Mercury semi-square Venus, the Fist).

Sign up for ECLIPSE here–right now we’re doing the free Nodal lesson, focusing on the meaning of the Nodes in your personal chart!

Recognizing the Absurd

Alexandra Day's 'Good Dog, Carl'

Alexandra Day’s ‘Good Dog, Carl’

When my girls were little we discovered a series of books that featured a babysitter named Carl and his adventures with the children he was tasked with watching. That’s cool, right? Except that Carl was a Rottweiler, and the children’s parents repeatedly put them in the most absurd, precarious, and dangerous situations without a care–as Carl would make sure it all worked out.

I loved these books; I have a keen sense of and fondness for the absurd, and I delighted in introducing my children to something so unreal. I still indulge in this, often asking kids of 6 or 7 if they’re married or have their driver’s license. They are old enough to recognize I’m saying a nutty thing, and it’s always fun to watch their reaction–ends up about half will laugh and say something like, ‘No!’ while the rest actually get a little angry, as if to say, ‘Why is this grown-up not playing the social game right?’

So is it just me, or are many individuals, and even larger entities, going to great lengths to convince others to accept the absurd? I’m looking at what’s going on in the sky right now, and we have one of the most solidly realist aspects imaginable at present, the square between Mars and Saturn, that brooks no nonsense and will nail all facts to the table–and perhaps I’m sensitive to the absurd v. the real right now with Mars and Saturn forming the base of a Fist of God with my natal Moon–ouch!–so what’s behind this for everyone else?

Maybe it’s the Ceres-Neptune opposition (Authority faces off against Idealism), or maybe it’s the approaching Finger of God with base of Pluto-Chiron and apex Mars–that’s like a Universal shout out for a Band-Aid® applied with a nail gun! It’s like saying, ‘We’ll heal through destruction, by wiping out the injuries (or maybe the injured!), and we’ll bring about that healing through martial means!’ Oh sure you will.

Usually I deal with the personal, so I think that’s how I’ll approach this question, too. With Vesta as current body of latest degree, we may find people are defending what they see as sacred, whether it makes sense or not, and whether it’s truly worth defending or not. The very idea that this is possibly what’s motivating us should give us pause–and spurred by the quincunx between Ceres and Juno, we might want to adjust our thinking about our own empowerment, and how much we do or don’t need the co-operation of authorities to achieve it. Jupiter and the Sun are in sextile, and Jupiter and Zeus are square; this shines a bright light on the social order, and through conflict on the ambitions and desires of those involved. This should give anyone willing to look a clear enough picture to determine whether we must go along with the absurd, or whether we can free ourselves, with a minimum of hurt (Uranus semi-sextile Chiron).

'Jetty at Low Tide aka the Walter Pier' Joseph DeCamp before 1923 {{PD-Art}}

‘Jetty at Low Tide aka the Walter Pier’ Joseph DeCamp before 1923 {{PD-Art}}

Bits from the current ECLIPSE:

Around 5 PM PDT of the 17th the Leo Moon moves into a unique position: she ends up filling in a Fist of God as she squares the Sun (apex Pluto) and the Earth (apex Uranus). This double fist suggests an excessive amount of action and/ or tension in play, with the emotions or intuition fueling identity issues the result in change, transformation, or destruction, and with emotions or intuition fueling reaction to material matters that creates radicalism, upset, revolution, or that spurs originality and ‘forward thinking’. It’s certainly a day when anything really can happen–be ready.

18 May we may find ourselves and others hedging bets; relationships sparkle with surprises and ‘fresh’ interaction, but carry depths of danger, rage, or a serious interest in creating change, while communication is deceptive, confusing, or centered on fantasies, and even the most direct and honest of us will land slightly askew of reality. Caution will come naturally to most of us as we sense the riptide beneath otherwise gentle social and emotional currents. Accept the positive while remaining aware that shocks, deception, and some scary depths could wait just around the corner. (Venus sextile Uranus, quincunx Pluto, Mercury square Neptune, quincunx Saturn)

A little bit of Lunar essence for Sunday the 19th, also from ECLIPSE:

3 AM PDT of the 19th the Moon opposes Chiron, either making us hard as steel (“Nothing can hurt me!”) or melding us so completely with our pain we feel we are one. In either case, our best course of action is to ask ourselves ‘why?’–why do we hurt from this? why do we continue to live this moment as if it’s still happening? why don’t we let it go? 9 AM PDT the Moon trines the South Node and quincunxes Juno. Something from the past may cause us to stumble in implementing our own empowerment; take a critical stance, don’t just accept memories as accurate or still valid. 6 PM PDT the Moon squares Jupiter and trines Mars, making us keen to act but perhaps rubbing the social circle the wrong way. We are likely to be critical of others in justifying our own actions, but we need to remember, no justification is required, though we do need to make choices we can live with later. 9:30 PM PDT the Moon trines Sedna, pulling us deep into contemplation or Self-reflection, or blanking us out in escape mode. Neither is more virtuous, though we should keep in mind that if we’ve been avoiding looking closely at ourselves, now really is the time, as something productive will come out of it.

Fighting with polar bears is, I think, inadvisable. Biard 1839 {{PD-Art}}

A Fist of God is formed with Mars square Saturn/ h.Zeus with apex Neptune/ Earth. Zow. I mean, just what do we get out of this? With a base that says, Work on those ambitions and desires, or else! we may be hard pressed to be up and running in the ‘right’ direction so quickly; we’ll know we’ve concocted the magic, effective formula when we see our dreams (or at least something longed-for or idealized) materialize right in front of us. This is a roll-the-dice aspect that we can only know we’ve handled correctly when the highly positive result is right before our eyes–if it doesn’t materialize, it ain’t gonna. This aspect lasts through the 26th of August; that’s our window for making it happen!

From the Visconti Tarot deck 15th century

6 AM PDT of the 30th sees the Moon trine Uranus and quincunx Chiron. It’s like we’ll get a kick in the pants–and whether it hurts or not is up to how we receive it! We can either let it hit us right in the primal wound (which will make us howl!) or we can let it hit us and use the momentum to propel ourselves forward and up–which won’t hurt at all–in fact it should revv up our unique skills. It’s a great influence, if we’re willing to go with it! Now, this is the start of a Finger of God, apex Moon, involving Chiron and Pluto as the base. Separate from other effects, the Finger offers, very simply, healing with a willingness to change, with resultant emotional and intuitive benefits. It’s no more complicated than that.

New Moon is at 11:39 AM Pacific at 7 Leo 15. The Leo New Moon reads as releasing subtle but powerful energies; it opposes Pallas (and Earth, of course), squares Jupiter, and quincunxes Pluto. There are other things close but outside the strict 2 degree orb–so we leave them alone.

The aspects suggest changes (possibly intense, traumatic, inevitable, sweeping, or arising from the destructive or the negative) challenge us to prove what we believe to be wise really is. It’s a giant reality check of a very personal nature; the upsets will require us to truly show who we are–and what’s more, there will be a public element to this. It’s very possible we will feel under a microscope at this time. We may be observed by the social circle, we may be tested by our students, readers, audience, our teachers, or those within our religious hierarchy, or we may be challenged to broadcast or publish our knowledge or wisdom and then to defend it. This may be a tempering of the Soul and the Soul’s Purpose–but will in many ways be more gentle than we might anticipate, and we should come out the other side (for this NM may just be the beginning of a long-term effect, rather than just a singular happening) much more sure of who we are and what we’re here to do (and consequently what we are also NOT here to do, courtesy of Pluto, who will help us eliminate and start again.)

Just after noon of the 31st, the Moon trines the North Node–and at about the same time the Moon also forms a loose Fist of God with a Moon/ Sedna square apex Pluto. The entire picture is one of unanticipatable material events (Sedna in Taurus) that have emotional results–and, contrary to the usual, we do not need to work out the square before Pluto is accessed–this time, it just happens. A Plutonian event can be anything that involves an exercise of power–just keep that in mind. It’s not necessarily a trauma, destructive act, or experience of rage–it could as easily be a transformative event that feels like a major blessing–so be ready for anything.

The Essence for 14 March: No Drama

Fist of God, My Daily Astrology Diary, The Astro Essence

The Mars/ Saturn quincunx may be the underpinning on much of what transpires. The action urge and ego must adjust to reality–no question. Rules and regulations, though, might have to bend under assault of the ‘I am’ or the persistence and one-pointedness of the need to do–so which way it falls for you may be dependent on what’s stimulated in the personal chart. If your Sun, Mars, or Ascendant are receiving stimulus from transiting bodies, then you will likely make the rules bend to you; everyone else will probably need to surrender ego to the realities of life.

9:30 AM-ish the Moon completes a Fist of God with a square to Saturn, both sesquiquadrate Neptune. Perhaps this manifests as a test: the emotional nature tests itself against reality, and this, if successful, can make dreams come true. It sounds like a fairy-tale, but it’s really the kind of simple, to-the-heart admonition that can guide us soundly to where we want to go. There’s no need for drama–but sometimes we just don’t realize that :) At this point the Moon also trines Mars, making it easy to act on our promptings. Go Us!
