Your Ascendant Zodiapedia: ‘The Caretaker of Comfort’ Taurus

Lovis Corinth ‘Mädchen mit Stier’ (Girl With Bull) 1902 {{PD}}

My Word dictionary wants me to change ‘Taurean’ to ‘tureen’–strangely appropriate, considering the Bull’s affinity for comfort food 🙂  –Tweeted by me 22 January 2014

Being born with Taurus on the Ascendant signals an individual who understands the physical and material pleasures/ experiences of life—and so is attuned as well to their potential origins, losses, or transformation from one state to another (through the opposing sign, Scorpio). This suggests an early environment where the material experience was prominent—either through appreciation for what surrounded the individual (whether that was luxurious or spare), or through lack that focused the individual on the material surroundings via the issue of survival, above anything else. Taurus might have taken comfort in the physical (food, enjoyments, activities, the learning of skills applied to the environment–typically artisanal or artistic–or exercise of talents) to fill some kind of gap, such as a common childhood loneliness or the experience of early caretakers who either made a huge fuss about the physical (and so focused the child’s values there) or who neglected them completely, leaving the young one to fend for her- or himself.

Taurus on the Ascendant appears to others to be grounded, methodical, aesthetically and especially sensually-oriented, concerned at all times with the material experience. Why is Taurus seen as so steadfast, so reliable? Is it because they’re plodding and dull? Nein! It’s because their priorities have both a practical and an aesthetically pleasing tinge—they are ruled by Venus, after all—and of course that fact lends an awareness of the Other in relationship—so it’s only natural that the Bull channels at least some of her or his Taurean response toward the welfare and comfort of those with whom they interact, and so gains the reputation of willingly looking out for others when they fail to look out for themselves—not a glamorous stance, but an appreciated one, in most cases. Since the material is important to Taurus, that’s where her focus stays—and others may unfairly read a lack of imagination in that. Taurus is about creating an atmosphere, an experience, and acquiring the materials and arena in which to do so—and meeting the world in this way makes for someone unusually competent at procurement and at understanding the worth of what surrounds them—practical indeed.

Remember, Taurus is looking out at the world through this lens, and what Taurus notices is surroundings and the way these make the human organism feel; above all, the Bull is tremendously responsive to the environment. Secondarily, Taurus’ focus on the material means he or she immediately and continually assesses and categorizes what is available and what must be done to create an acceptable ‘comfort level’—and this is a highly positive thing, as everyone benefits: Fire signs may be too busy to see to needs, Air signs who may ignore the material world entirely, and Water signs may be too overwhelmed by feeling to worry about fundamentals. This concentration on what’s right in front of her or him is what gives Taurus the reputation of being a plodder, a title bestowed by those who may assume that the details are beneath them—but when those who think like that are in charge, we find the necessities and the niceties aren’t seen to at all, and consequently our animal Selves suffer. Taurus’ concerns are highly practical ones, and as well, Taurus knows the importance of enjoying the experience—something we could all use a friendly reminder of.

It’s important to recognize that dealing with the material is no less spiritual than meditation or prayer; to see it as such is to miss the reason we incarnate in the first place, and Taurus knows this much better than most. The Taurus Ascendant may find the focus on the physical and on comforts becomes detrimental as the social sphere expands and the education goes forward; there are those who would designate material matters as ‘less evolved’ or sophisticated than say, intellectual pursuits, relationships, or finances—and these individuals would be, if not wrong, then really unpleasant in their snobbishness (which is something the less-developed Taurus knows all too well, when the focus is on luxuries and status within the established social standards). Taurus’ reputation for being stubborn comes from a need to feel grounded—and for the Taurus Ascendant, this can play out as a need to feel sure of the identity, including talents and the asset picture, and to achieve physical comfort, before anything else can be attended to. Stability in all forms is the goal of Taurus.

Eventually, the Bull realizes that it’s not all about warm sweaters, cozy fires, and delicious stews (or cool breezes, swinging in a hammock, and a tall fruity drink in one’s hand!) With time, the Taurean becomes more contemplative and less experiential, and begins to look below the surface of things (the complementary energy of the opposing sign, Scorpio), embracing a sense of mystery in the process, in contradiction to their inborn urge toward security and no surprises. They’ve always known that the unseen is there, affecting things, but it takes both a maturing and a certain level of surety within the physical sphere for Taurus to allow exploration of what she or he can’t see. We need to remember, Taurus is a highly sensitive sign; their involvement with comfort may be a response to an early emotional life that was lacking, as much or more than a response to the physical side of things. This kind of experience can make for a wise counselor or one who knows what others need, materially and spiritually, especially after or during trauma or an emergency. Taurus’ sensitivity to the environment and comfort evolves, translating into a sensitivity to the unseen forces of life and the power to resurrect or remake through manipulation of the material world, reflecting its companion opposite, Scorpio.

Just a Little Astro Essence on Venus in the Natal Chart

‘A Breezy Day’ CC Curran 1887 {{PD-Art}}

Venus, of course, makes her presence felt by House at least twice in the natal chart, once in her rulership of Taurus, and once with Libra. These two signs are naturally quincunx each other, and this describes the way we quite typically see relationship matters (Libra) as incompatible with material ones (Taurus). We tend to believe that the lowest form of relationship in which we can engage is one where we receive a material benefit; we call this person a ‘prostitute’ or label them ‘kept’ and act as if this (a money for  action or energy exchange, and we condemn this in spite of the fact that a job has the same general parameters) is in itself a moral failing. Our natural uneasiness in mixing or equating the two must be tempered by an awareness that living in mutually beneficial material situations is really what we must do, not just for survival but in order to build civilization. We tend to see a relationship that involves love as more noble than one that provides something we need–and yet we mix these things, love and material need, all the time, particularly when we are in partnership–and perhaps that is one of the underlying reasons the mate relationship is so fraught with emotional landmines: we hold ourselves and our loved ones to impossibly high standards, demanding ‘pure’ love be given and received, and yet the very fabric of day-to-day requires an interdependence that, if we recognize any facet of it as a cold, material exchange, may de-value our relationship in our own eyes.

Taurus Into Vesta: ‘Look Around and Appreciate’

Atmosphere and relationship, especially surroundings that are a material statement about our Taurean essence, will be emphasized with Vesta in Taurus. by Corot 1857 {{PD-Art}}

For the 30th of April, Vesta enters Taurus, making us more than usually aware of what’s precious to us materially, around the home, and what physical about the partner (looks, earnings, possessions, talents) we find admirable. This viewpoint should not be eschewed as lacking in spirituality; that quality is found in the person, not the trappings–and yet, what we’re surrounded with is no less worthy and spiritual in expression than anything else, since it is part of, even a statement about, our world. What surrounds us is, in essence, a manifestation of our spirituality–it’s now a time to celebrate the flower growing in the trash heap, so to speak, appreciate the animal appetites, or to notice the rot that may underlie the thing of beauty.

Venus Enters Taurus: ‘Slipping Into Something More Comfortable’

Casas 1894 {{PD-Art}}

Venus tiptoes into the sign of the bull at 2:24 AM PST on the 5th of March, and we’ll hear a general sigh of relief as shoes are kicked off and toes run through new spring grass, armor plate is unbuckled and set aside for something soft and cozy, and we stop demanding what the ego wants and start filling our pie hole with the culinary glories we’re suddenly noticing all around.This is one of Venus’ two homes (the other being Libra), so she’ll be super-happy here, right?

Umm, not so fast–as she changes signs she positions herself in an exact semi-square from the transiting Sun. uh-oh. The great Isabel Hickey spoke of this, the only possible aspect of discord between Sun and Venus, noting that this mild negative is the most dissonance that there can be between the symbol of the Soul (the Sun) and the principle of Love (Miss V). This suggests that, at least at first, Venus will be gettin’ into the tangible comforts of home, the sensual, and the creative at least in part because she’s a little upset–maybe jealous, envious, or wanting ‘more’, all typical Venusian ‘faults’–or because her vanity, aesthetic needs, or attempts to show love are not being seen in a flattering light. Whatever it is, Venus retreats in what is essentially a passive-aggressive stance meant to say, “I’m done pushing forward (her time in Aries), I’m unhappy when I try to partner, or with the Other, who doesn’t appreciate me (her other sign, Libra), so now I’m going to hide away, indulge myself, and relax–with the added purpose of ignoring you, and concentrating on me.”

Watch the tone around the time of, and directly after, the sign change, and note where resentments seem to bubble to the surface, in ourselves and others. In just a day Our Lady of Love will sextile Neptune, and with both in their own signs, this may make for a potent elixir of Love, idealism, delusion, or deception, that turns us away from resentment and puts us on a creative, and hopefully kinder (to ourselves and others) path.

How to Make It Through the Holidays: Taurus

'Europa and the Bull' Kimbell 1634 {{PD-Art}}

No matter what you do or don’t celebrate, it’s the holiday season–there’s no way to avoid it. In the newsletter I shared a few tongue-in-cheek suggestions for how to survive this annual time of family, food, fights, fun, fruitcake, and all those other ‘f’ words, and I’ll be sharing a little advice for each sign, one at a time. Your Nemesis, listed at the end of the sign, suggests who might be out to sabotage or just give you a hard time, while your angel is the sign energy you can call on in others for assistance, and your personal elf or cherub is the sign energy that will cheer you up and work behind the scenes to make your holiday special. Watch for the rest of the signs during the coming weeks.

Taurus  Though your typical reaction to stress is to quietly hunker down until the chaos and shelling subside, during the holidays that will only result in more and more chores, tasks, and issues being strapped to your back–and you ain’t nobody’s beast of burden! So what do you do? You’re not a fan of confrontation, and plugging away at all those tasks in the hope of finishing and freeing yourself is a pipe dream that’ll never materialize–but acting like you can’t retain a message or instruction just might. Combine this with sudden restless feet and uncharacteristic activity: you must move, dance, run, play charades (at which Taurus can be very good), walk, leap, spin, and make yourself absent when chores are being passed out. And if you are spotted and told to do, give the impression that you can’t be trusted to remember, or to get it right, with a “Did you want 5 pounds of flour and candied citron, or is that 5 pounds of sugar and fresh lemon or . . . did you say something about shrimp and muffin cups?’ See what I mean? Your Nemesis this holiday season:  Aries, Gemini, or Scorpio/ Your secret angel: Capricorn/ Your own personal elf or cherub: Virgo

If you come here often, you should subscribe–you’d get a lot out of it!

13 May 2010: Fierce Beginnings

12 Wednesday May 2010

Grand Square, Mystic Rectangle, New Moon, Taurus, Taurus New Moon

New Moon for the month is at 6:04 PM PDT at 23 Taurus 09. Nothing falls in aspect within our usual 2 degree orb (in fact, nothing falls within 3 degrees, either!) So, derivation of meaning falls heavily on the Sabian Symbol for the meeting of Sun and Moon, and on a couple of configurations. The Sabian is, ‘An Indian Warrior Riding Fiercely, Human Scalps Hanging From His Belt’ http://www.cafeastrology.com/sabiansymbols_degreemeanings.html

Zow! What a symbol to kick off the Lunar month! It sounds enormously aggressive, until we inspect it a little more closely. This is, more than anything else, a picture story that must be interpreted within a cultural context, within the norm and standards for a lifestyle other than the one to which we’re attuned as members of Western society. Within a Native American framework of the past, this is a picture of a real go-getter, of the most virile member of the social order, acting his part in the group to the hilt. Again, within the cultural context, this is certainly a male, and so represents the animus, the part of the psyche that is the doer, that acts, that’s very Martian in nature; so what’s this symbol doing in Venus-ruled Taurus?

What he carries on his belt is key: human scalps, which within the culture were not so much proof of ferocity (though the taking of them was meant to convey complete seriousness to the takee! who, by the way, did not always die from this procedure); instead, they are status symbols, and as such align perfectly with the Taurean emphasis on the material world and one’s assets and talents. The scalps show one’s bravery, one’s formidable willingness to act, in no uncertain terms. They are irrefutable proof of our ability to ‘go out and get’-which is the mandate of this New Moon.

Taurus, above all, makes use of what it has; it’s not just about possession, but about exploitation, and this is the message of the New Moon, in my opinion: Go fiercely (with energy and exuberance) toward what you want to create, particularly in the way this will make use of talents and assets, and raise status. Be unashamed of your goals-do not feel pressured to search for and dress them up in altruistic motivations-all that we do, want, and be has an effect on the world around us. Wanting a million dollars so you can give generously to charity is no more noble than wanting a million dollars so that you can travel, buy an island, build a business, or throw a giant party, simply because in any case the money flows back out to others (even held in a bank it is being used)-and this means that no matter what, both your desires and the social order are being served (here we enter the consciousness of money, of choosing where to spend or give as an expression of our values-Taurus, again).

Now you may object that status is more a Capricorn thing, but no energy functions in a vacuum, and Taurus works in a world filled with what we have, and what others have, both tangible (possessions) and intangible (talents, skills, and love)-it’s human nature to compare and contrast, and to want-without desire we’d have no reason to do much of anything-so, when we see what we have, and see what others around us have, it’s quite natural to draw from this experience concepts of what we would like to have-and this New Moon is meant to bring realization of what those concepts are, and to put those concepts into action, to seed them quite aggressively (and don’t be hatin’ on the idea of aggression-it’s simply ‘forceful energy,’ and whether you know it or not, you use it all the time-otherwise there wouldn’t be an open pickle jar on earth!)

A Grand Square at the time of the meeting of Sun and Moon, consisting of Venus, Saturn, Ceres, and Uranus, suggests that the New Moon intention will be forged and tested in an atmosphere of status, rules, and how we can play them (Saturn), accepting of our own or others’ authority as the ultimate authority (Ceres-I didn’t say this would be a cake walk!) also rebellion, innovation, sudden ‘moves,’ and reaction of/ place within the group (Uranus), and all of it over reward, over what may be gained, over what we treasure or desire (Venus).

PS Did manage to ignore Sedna’s conjunction–seems appropriate!–but since it only makes the effects difficult to see, and I’ve talked about it so much lately, I don’t think there’s much more to add.

There’s also a Mystic Rectangle; but that’s only discussed in ‘What You Won’t See on the Blog’ in the current issue of ECLIPSE http://dogandsunflower.wordpress.com/new-eclipse-spring-2010/ Purchase comes with a free, mini-reading on Ceres in your natal chart by me; just contact me at juliedemboski@hotmail.com post-purchase with your birth data–spell out the month, date, local time at birth, and place name, not co-ordinates-you may substitute someone else for the reading, but only one reading per purchase, please. Men may prefer a look at their Zeus, star of the Winter issue. Submit your data with a good dose of patience; I’m working quickly, but I still can’t fly! For all other reading requests, please see the WANT MORE? page-Please DO NOT contact me until you have looked there, under services-Thank You!

19-20 Feb 2010: Basic Instincts

Moon, My Daily Astrology Diary, Taurus

The Taurus Moon has offered us a re-birth with its immediate aspects to the Sun/Earth axis at 00, and we’d do well to look at things through this renewed lens, our basic instincts (it is Taurus, after all) refreshed and refocused, for the moment on the emotional effects of material matters. The morning square PST to Mars makes us want to act on what we feel; unfortunately this is flipped with our capacity for emotional realization, and may mean that we get into difficulties with our need to change it up while only considering the consequences later (7 AMish PST on the 20th, when the Moon squares Mercury) .

Thanks to http://www.karenswhimsy.com {{PD}}

Before this, though, we may go through a stop and start and stop again way of reacting, as the Moon first  quincunxes Saturn (we try to measure how much to put on the brakes, likely unsuccessfully), then trines Pluto (what we’ve changed, transformed, or destroyed is presented to us), then sextiles Jupiter (and we get a little too much of whatever it is we’ve created, or we get feedback or exposure socially). After all this comes the Mercury contact, and we get the message, one way or another.

By then we’re well into the 20th, and spend the day either enjoying or trying to remedy what we created the day before. By 4 PM PST we are offered another new start, as the Moon conjuncts Sedna and trines the North Node–and this one may be involuntary, as the material either floods our consciousness or we become completely disconnected from it. This aspect allows us to feel without the usual impediments, mental, spiritual, psychic, or emotional, and yet we may not be able to label what we experience. It’s an event when emotional perceptions go directly to the nerves and bypass the brain–for some of us implying danger, while for others a unique sensory experience, and for still others a much needed ‘time out’ that allows a form of Taurean renewal.

By 6 PM the Moon opposes Pallas; expect emotional stand-offs centered on skills or ‘the wise course.’  10 PM PST brings a quincunx to Ceres, bringing forward a need to adjust the emotions to nature, reality, or the needs of others, as Ceres takes a maternal tone. 2 AM PST starts a sextile to Uranus, followed swiftly by squares to Chiron and Neptune; the emotions take a beating, first startled, then lied to, hurt, deluded, or comforted with fantasy. If we’re asleep at this point the effect will enter through our dreams; look for the ways the senses will be represented, and what this may say about waking life.

In gratitude to all who’ve been so supportive in purchasing the inaugural issue of ECLIPSE, I’d like to offer the opportunity to ask a single, brief question. Email me at juliedemboski@hotmail.com with your query; include your birth info (write out the month, place name not co-ordinates) and I will determine if your question requires a look at the natal chart, at transits, or a horary chart. Vague, open-ended questions bring vague answers; specifics bring focused info. All answers will, of necessity, be very brief; be patient, I’ll get back to you as quickly as possible, and I’m sure you can understand that I won’t have the time for any follow-up exchanges, though of course I look forward to any comments you may have. This offer is valid only for purchasers of the magazine, and cannot be reassigned to anyone else, and the email used must be the email from which you purchased the magazine–no exceptions. No questions will be answered before magazine purchase. And, in case you’re wondering, it’s not too late–purchase your own copy of ECLIPSE–only $2.95!–and get in on the deal! http://dogandsunflower.wordpress.com/eclipse-in-depth-astrology-for-the-21st-century/

Pallas Into Taurus: the Wise Earth

19 Monday May 2008

Posted by juliedemboski in aspects and placements, astrology, current events in the sky, Pallas, Pluto, Saturn

≈ Comments Off on Pallas Into Taurus: the Wise Earth

Earth, Grand Trine, Pallas Athena, Taurus

We’ve seen startling transformations to the solid structures of the Earth, whether man-made or natural, in the earthquakes in China, with the unseasonal tornadoes across the United States, with the massive cyclone in Myanmar, and I’m sure there have been many other instances of destruction of the current reality, figurative and literal, in many many places. Saturn and Pluto have been showing their willingess to embrace each other; destruction and the solid easily combine, and humankind loses what they count on in the process. With Pallas entering Taurus, we’ll witness a Grand Trine for approximately one week, from the 20th to the 27th. What can we expect when Pallas puts down her shield and spear, and looks to plowing the field?

The spirit of Taurus is of the Earth itself; when the Warrior Queen enters the sign of the Bull, she puts aside her armor, leaves the battlefield, and returns to the source of sustenance and creation. This is represented by Taurus as the sign of the fields, of gardens and growth (though agriculture is Virgo–why?–because Taurus is the seed, the act of planting that is akin to faith, while Virgo is the gathering in on a large scale of the product); as well, Taurus is the actual soil things grow in, and as such she is the sign that represents those crafts and artisanal skills that are quite literally of the Earth and its products, such as sculpting, pottery, cooking, the fashioning of jewelry, and use of stone and wood to build.

Pallas steps onto the fertile Earth, and a set of talents entirely different than those we’ve seen during her time in Aries come forward. Pallas is an indicator of practical and artisanal abilities herself, and when in Taurus she becomes the pair of hands that deals skillfully with all that the Earth produces. She is also a businesswoman, and as such will deal in Taurus with the material, the tangible, with the real estate (in its most expansive sense) of each one of us. She will help us re-build, help us find a home, bring us to fertile ground, in one sense or another.

When she enters Taurus she creates a Grand Trine with Saturn and Pluto, and should aid in recovery from all the devastation that the Earth and her inhabitants have been experiencing. This aid will be practical and beautiful; Pallas is nothing if not wise in her choices. To respect Pallas is to honor our own wise inner voice, as well as our most useful skills and abilities. For this week long period, we’ll see some of the most meaningful steps being taken in building, planting, with energies rising Phoenix-like from Mother Earth. Check the House in the natal chart where this will occur for you to know where best to apply your Taurus and Pallas oriented efforts–you can make significant strides during the week long trine, and can exercise the wisdom of Pallas Athena in all Earth-related matters as she helps us move forward toward a productive and bountiful summer.
