Can I get a job if Jupiter is transiting my 1st?

My first thought here was, why wouldn’t you? Jupiter would, barring other circumstances, bring opportunity to you as you contact the world. The main, job-destroying possibility with the planet of expansion and abundance moving through your 1st might be seated in the personality; since 1st House traits will be exaggerated as Jupiter moves through, seeking a job where your personality might need to be downplayed may put you at a disadvantage. For instance, if you’re being considered to model clothing, the designer wouldn’t want a model who takes attention from his or her designs. This isn’t about you doing anything in particular; it’s about others’ perceptions of the persona you use to meet life. And, if you suffer from any unfortunate personality ‘tics’ these could be overblown, and be off-putting to an employer–a normally harmless tendency to chatter when nervous, for example, could become voluminous and signal (incorrectly) to a prospective employer that you lack Self-control. So, the best ‘defense’ for a Jupiter 1st House transit when seeking employment is a keen awareness of how you come across–in which case some brutally honest friends and a video camera might be your biggest help in interview preparation.

What is the effect of Mercury combust the Sun on career?

This is a great question, and also impossible to answer with any specificity without an individual chart, so we’ll look at what we can surmise generally. Combustion is when a planet is between 17 minutes and 8.5 degrees from conjunction with the Sun (less than 17 minutes is another condition, cazimi, and a condition extending out from 8.5 degrees is known as Under the Sunbeams). It’s not unusual for Mercury to sit combust the Sun, considering how closely they travel together. Opinions on span of influence and on effects vary widely; in my view, combustion suggests that the Soul (Sun) is ‘in charge’ of the communication function (Mercury), rather than, as in a typical conjunction, which functions as a fusing of the two energies. Because of this, much of the effect will depend on the sign in which this occurs. I’ve seen combustion result, in the case of Mercury, in a scenario where the essence and manner of the Sun seems to override the purity of the communication function. For instance, if the combustion occurs in Libra, the individual may exhibit an emphasis in communication on relationships and relating that takes a highly subjective view, where the person is constantly measuring her or his communications and the impact they have on others–it’s as if Mercury can’t  function in any objective way–the Sun’s bias is always there, coloring everything said, done, thought, and processed. This can, on the other hand, make for Soul’s ability to communicate itself that is eloquent and very true to the individual’s intent–so in some careers this can be a great asset. We can’t forget that the Houses ruled by Mercury and the Sun will play a big role in delineating where this expression (or its lack) will show up.

How do Capricorns show they’re into you?

Wait a minute–weren’t you here last week? (See previous post, ‘What You’re Asking’). Capricorn, Capricorn, Capricorn–you’re the star right now, as the Sun prepares to enter your territory, and this seeker wants to know how you show your interest. I’ve got one word to describe a Capricorn who wants to get to know you: serious! You’ll likely get a lighter, initial approach (Capricorn will play it cool, if Venus sits in Aquarius, or act the bon vivant if Venus is in Sagittarius) but she or he will quickly get down to brass tacks. The primitive types will try to push you to commit immediately, and may even try clubbing you and dragging you into their rocky hideaway; run from this one at all costs. The healthy ones are cautious. Because they take even the most casual commitment so seriously, Capricorn may eye you for awhile before approaching–but when Cappy makes his or her mind up, there’s no mistaking their goal of making things solid, establishing rules and boundaries, and building a little love nest together. You’ll notice Capricorn when they’re finally ready for a relationship; Cappy will be the one standing ramrod straight at the back of the room, grim-faced and determined, clutching a bouquet of posies, hoping to win your attention, and your love.

Bonus hint on keeping Capricorn’s love: never ever ever embarrass them.

In what way is fame connected to the 5th House?

Signatures within the chart indicating fame are as individual as the persons who attain this, and are so intimately connected to the reasons they’ve attained that fame that it’s impossible to suggest ‘fame indicators’ ahead of time. My personal feeling is that people tend to make much too much of the 5th House in terms of potentials for creativity, which so many of us see as vital to positive attainments of fame; the 5th is below the horizon, a personal area, and in that way is indicative of seed, of potential, to some extent–but seed needs water, sunlight, the right conditions, to avoid attack from pests and disease–and all these ‘growing’ conditions are found elsewhere, and tell the real story of 5th House potentials. As well, creativity is found in many other areas of the chart, so I see the 5th as a repository of mostly unconscious creativity, that ‘leaks’ out via the connections to other points; after all, creativity is a very vague concept–without shape, form, impetus it’s really just a notion, a wisp of idea with no innate push to become concrete–other energies drive that. Think of 5th House potentials as you do the potential to have children, another 5th House subject, and you’ll see how much energy and intent are needed to turn creative potential into creative accomplishment.

That said, we can suggest a few things that might fall into the fame mix: prominent or angular Pluto is common, perhaps because these people are in some way driven, and certainly they in some way interact with or attract power and power positions; Saturn in some relative strength in the chart–this suggests a modicum of Self-discipline (in instances of fame achieved, rather than stumbled into accidentally), also that the world may take one seriously, and that one can make some impact on reality; the chart ruler (ruler of the Ascendant) prominent in the chart, suggesting a force of personality; the Midheaven and/ or Sun usually vital to the aspects that show what the individual is famous for; and some significant Nodal involvement with the other energies. Just some suggestions, of course–it’s up to the individual, not the chart, to take what we’re endowed with and shape it into something worthy of the regard of the rest of humanity.

Good morning, and welcome to the Monday Poll Round-Up here in the frozen north. We’re enjoying unusually low temperatures for this part of the world, and join our brethren on the eastern coast of the US in power outages, ice storms, and slippery mayhem of all kinds. The weather was probably a big factor in the answers to the question concerning weekend plans, with a full 25% choosing escape of some kind (a hole, partying, or isolation fueled by paranoia) and another 25% going for a mini-vacation; I hope all of you got the relief and rejeuvenation you sought. As for the other half of respondents, we gritted our teeth and dealt as best we could, maybe not the smartest strategy for our mental health; joining a friend in a hole or at a party might have been a better choice, considering the weather induced stress I’m seeing all around me this morning!

Observation of the Nodes as they move through the natal chart might be higher on many people’s lists in future; it’s not surprising that half of respondents said they hadn’t really tracked the transiting Nodes progress or effects, while others have a leg up on us: 29% say they count on contact for positive change, and 21% for negative–kudos to those who’ve been observing this all along!

And kudos to our president for such spry reflexes and for noting that the freedom to hurl that shoe was something that likely would not have existed before the US arrival, but thumbs down on his inability to take this expression of outrage and frustration seriously (and where, I wondered, were the Secret Service–shouldn’t they have been on that guy as soon as he stood up and raised his arm?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8GOrc0-Ygg  It seems imperative to me that Bush treat this journalist’s quite literal acting out of Uranus in Pisces seriously. That energy is nearing the natural stress point that occurs for any energy late in a sign, and with Uranus this could signal a serious rejection of a continued US presence in Iraq through explosive rebellion, an attempt to seek an Iraqi version of freedom that quite naturally does not include the US as paternalistic overseer.

The journalist involved, who normally reports on Sadir City, a minority stronghold and hotbed of violence, has, during the course of this invasion and occupation, been kidnapped, tortured, and lost family members; unfortunately, that’s not an uncommon tale–so who can blame those who’ve had their lives so thoroughly disrupted when they object to the ongoing imposition? The danger here is seen clearly in Bush’s dismissal of this man as kooky, a nut, someone who just did something silly for attention; I see this man as a symbol of seething frustration–and when someone shows their profound anger and upset, one must respect and acknowledge that, even when one doesn’t agree with it. Mr. Bush failed to do so, and in denigrating this man as just a goofball he denigrates the serious feelings of a wide variety of persons, both inside and outside of Iraq, who want this to end. I have one final question for Mr. Bush: if this man was just an attention seeker, why was he arrested, and at this time continues to be held, as if he were a real threat? You can’t have it both ways, George.

And finally we have the plethora of answers gleaned from the question on relationships. We can’t talk absolute numbers since more than one answer from each person was accepted, but we can see some trends among readers of this blog. Nobody put love relationships first and didn’t care about other relationships, and nobody listed friends as a replacement for family; the latter surprised me, as there had been a trend in the late 90s/ early 00s that suggested especially among young professional city dwellers that they were gathering together and creating quasi-families for holiday and social events. I’m wondering if the trend back to connection with actual family isn’t in large part based on the growing economic difficulties; after all, if home is the place that has to take you in when you come to the door, for most people that would hands down be relatives, especially in these tough times.

Registering with a note of misanthropy (or perhaps just a healthy Self-interest) are the 8% who see relationships as needless impediments, and the 8% who love things other than people (and this latter I found very healthy–these are the people who outlive all their peers because they are not too interdependent or enmeshed with others– as long as you’re talking about interests that make living worthwhile, and not Eros centered attention to objects!) But I’m truly concerned with the 3% who believe there’s only one right mate for them, the 15% who hold relationships to impossible ideals, and the 25% (!) who are lonely at a Soul level. My heart goes out to all of you. My prescription to you, as both an astrologer and a human being, is to work on your relationship with yourself and to the Universe; supportive and fulfilling relationships come when that is the focus. Though my answer may sound glib, and is certainly more easily said than done, it is the core of any true happiness, and as such is something we all deserve.

I’ve decided that one of the best ways to serve readers may be to look through what they’ve been searching and try to address the topics that brought them here in the first place. To that end I’m creating a new feature, ‘What You’re Asking,’ that will on a weekly basis explore some of this material, and some of the topic queries, in a question and answer format. First up:

Can a Grand Trine be made up of different elements?

Yes, and when it is they become of prime importance in delineating the meaning of the aspect. We have a good example in the chart of Osama bin Laden (granted, even the date of 10 March 1957 Riddah, Saudi Arabia is in question, but if this is right . . . .) He shows a Grand Trine of the Moon at 00 Cancer trine Vesta at 26 Aquarius trine Neptune at 2 Scorpio–and we might guess that this config might have played out solely within his personal life if all positions had been in Water, but with the addition of Vesta in the intellectually-oriented Air placement of Aquarius we see the elevation of pure, basic emotion (Moon in Cancer) and emotion-keyed ideals/fantasies/delusions, possibly with a destructive bent (Neptune in Scorpio) to the level of philosophy and mental contemplation; and from there, it’s not hard to imagine the ‘action transit’ (a Solar Arc of Mars, perhaps?) that could’ve set bin Laden’s viewpoint into real-world motion.

Just knowing a Sun sign is not much to go on, but presuming that he is ‘typical’ (whatever that means!) then we can make a few guesses. Since Capricorn may be prone to expressing love through (in positive manifestation) the desire to ‘build’ something, tangible or intangible, for the object of his interest, then we may see him quietly (for the goat can be a stealthy creature) withdraw his efforts or support to very practical, day-to-day kinds of nurture. This is the kind of guy who offers to make your dream of a backyard retaining wall or cedar lined closet a reality, or he organizes on-line bill pay for you, or drives you to work every day–and then one day he is not working on the project, or administering the billing account, or you are curtly informed that he won’t be able to drive you–and there’s no mention of future availability. With a less healthy Cappy, this may show as an end to trying to make you conform to certain standards, no more dictation of your agenda or priorities, and no more judgment, ‘rules,’ or suppression–and it may take a minute, but soon you’ll feel the blessed relief of having his cloven hoof removed from your back!

What are the common mother/child connections in astrology? madonna-and-child

Though this can be a highly varied subject, with indicators keyed to the involved individuals, there are a few fairly consistent guidelines to look for. Almost without exception, I’ve seen contact in the form of conjunction between a personal placement of the child (very often the Moon) and one of the mother’s ‘public’ angles, typically the Midheaven or Ascendant–makes sense, as the birth of a child easily changes the way one presents oneself (ASC) and/ or the public image (MC). Contact between the Jupiter of one with a personal placement of the other (often Sun–identity–or Moon–mothering or role as mother) is common, with Jupiter in this instance representing the social role or place in society. Transits or Solar Arcs of Pluto to the mother’s chart can often signify pregnancy, and so the child will have a Pluto in relative proximity or close aspect to something important in the mother’s chart.

And we’ll wrap it up with aspect analysis: Eros conjunct Node  That gives us two possibilities: South and North. Eros conjunct the South Node marries the desire nature to the past–so what we find erotic may have been formed very early or even (if we believe this) in another life. With the North Node, this suggests that the desire nature may be a driving force behind our destined direction, and thus our life choices. If we’re talking about cross-chart contact, the stronger connector is by far one party’s Eros to the other party’s South Node–and this may be whirly-swirly with conflicting ideas and motivators; with Eros in one chart conjunct North Node in another, this could bring the Eros person into the picture as he or she looks to further the other’s life course, so overall this contact may feel a little user-y, with the Eros person being the ‘giver’ and the Node person the one receiving all the benefit (even as the Eros person desires to help).

Monday Poll Round-Up (Not), Fun With Cursors, and What I Did Over the Weekend

I went an entire week without asking you a single question, but I’ll mend my ways today, with a brand new poll. My experience over the weekend brought the transiting Nodes to my attention in a big way, and I want to hear about what may have happened in your life when the transiting Nodes touched important planets and points in your natal chart. For me this weekend, the Nodes brought forward intense memories, and I really didn’t anticipate this; but once I looked at the aspects, I realized how big their effect can be.

My husband and I drove down to Eugene, Oregon to check on our house, which is for sale (great timing, no?) As we came to the edge of town I felt a heaviness settle on me; it was almost palpable, and repeatedly through the weekend tears welled up as I recalled one sadness or another that had happened during our eight and a half years there. This was a huge surprise to me, as I’d really loved our time in Eugene; but as an astrologer, I had to wonder what this sudden effect might correlate to. I hadn’t really been paying attention to transit activity to my own chart, but as I pondered I realized that the transiting Nodal axis is square my natal axis. On returning to Seattle and my computer, I gave it all a closer look.

On pulling into town on Saturday the transiting Ascendant was square my natal Moon, and the current Pisces Moon was Void at 29 degrees; with these measurements, an emotional wallop was not a surprise, even though, in the moment, it certainly wasn’t what I expected (a Void Moon can be defined as just that, bringing unexpected progress and results–I’m assuming this was the trigger for the flood of memory). At the same time, the transiting South Node was four minutes from exact to my natal 6th House Uranus, ruler of my Ascendant, and was trine my natal Saturn. This put the North Node one degree twenty-five minutes from conjunction to my Chiron in the 12th, and the transiting axis was 15 minutes from exactly square to my natal Nodal axis. Also of note at less than one degree from perfection were transiting Saturn opposed natal Moon, and transiting Earth conjunct/Sun opposed natal Juno.

My mind was preoccupied the entire weekend with the negatives and heartbreaks of our time there, and in looking now I suppose this was shown by the activity to my Moon (as well, Solar Arc Pluto is quincunx my Moon, only adding to a long-term purging and transforming effect), though I think the real marker was the Nodal contact. In looking back at other contacts of transiting Nodes to the natal Nodal axis I haven’t found anything like this, though I have noticed a pattern of tension and life shake-ups coinciding with hard contact, usually tensions that kept me preoccupied with life in the moment, and allowing a minimum of time for examination and reflection. So, I want to ask all of you:

It’s Monday Poll Round-Up, and we’ve looked at each Moon this week, asking what people feel will be the challenges for each. Overall, the results are steady, with 56%+ each time giving answers indicating either positive feelings or a positive outlook on their ability to cope. This is heartening, telling us that more than half of us are meeting events with the best attitude possible, and that means chances for success in anything we apply ourselves to also goes up. A big plus: nobody was simply looking to escape–kudos to all, for the willingness to take responsibility, while the biggest plus is likely one we’re not even aware of: the emotional influence works largely through the unconscious, and with a positive outlook we may encounter ‘set ups’ and situations that are predisposed to a positive outcome, in response to our positive attitude; we really do create our own Universe!

The negatives, averaging around 34%, were troubling, if only for the way some of us expressed feelings of helplessness or some degree inability to cope as well as we’d like. My impulse is to say, Don’t be afraid, everything is as it is because a) the Universe truly is working in your best interests, and anything happening is happening in order to steer you in a particular direction and to give you particular experiences, and 2) if you are responsive to what is being revealed to you, there is no reason to fear–it’s only when you are not heeding the information offered that fear is a reasonable response, as the situation becomes similar to a driver on the highway who ignores ‘do not enter’ ‘wrong way’ ‘one way only’ and ‘stop’!

The ‘Dandies and Dictators’ poll was intriguing, mostly for the way a full 20% feel that the men they know are neither dandified nor dics (!) My only question then was, what are they? as I was unable to think of any male I’ve ever known who didn’t hold even a very mild desire to either be admired/ the center of attention/ or glory in his metrosexualtiy (some of the results of a dandified Juno) or to gently boss others around (again, Juno showing her power within the male psyche).

Venus and Jupiter meet in Capricorn, but here again, we must be willing to see the actual effect created, rather than looking in vain for what we expect. Will we get more love and/or money? Certainly that’s one alternative, but we must also note that circumstances might be deceptive, illusory, or inspired (Neptune influence), or they might bring results that are unduly restrictive, or results may be withheld, for now (Saturn aspect). So, we might not know immediately what this smash-up means, and there’s always the chance that it can have more than one influence for the individual; in fact, I would assume this will indicate at least two manifestations: one oriented toward the matters of the House in the natal chart where this conjunction takes place, and one drawing on one or more combinations of subject of the Houses each rules in the natal chart.  We must also consider that Jupiter’s involvement might signal exaggerations of the current state of love, money, relationships, so that whatever their present status, we will get a snoot full, and that may be great or not so! If you are having difficulty synthesizing possible meanings for the meeting of Venus and Jupiter, I would be glad to give suggestions specific to the various Houses they rule in your chart; please elaborate in the comments section. My sense is that we’re all at least a little puzzled by the state of things, either personally or on the world stage, with the horrors of Mumbai being the latest assault on our Collective psyche and sensibilities. Take the direct approach; look around your own life for signs of both pitfalls and promise. This morning I saw a mating pair of eagles in flight, certainly an unusual sight, especially so close to a city; and yet where I live the tall cedars, firs, and pines of the Northwest have been preserved in place to a surprising degree, and wild life is still abundant. Certainly, none of us should be surprised to see such a soaring beauty in our own surroundings, and in our own lives, if we’ll just look into the heavens.

Happy Monday, and welcome to the weekly poll round-up, where we shake out the poll numbers in an effort to see trends in thought and feeling. I was heartened this week by the high number of positive responses in each of the polls, especially those that evinced a healing and contribution-oriented attitude. The more of us who approach daily life with a consciousness of the interconnectedness of all things, and the willingness to add in positive ways to the Collective energy and experience, the more likely we are to sway things in a positive direction on a planetary scale.

Sound a little high falutin’? I think not, considering that roughly 17-20% in each survey chose an answer that reflects some fear or a distrust of the Universe. There are many many reasons this may be so, and I’m in no position to judge those reasons. What I do know, however, is that the Collective positivity that is in evidence will influence those who are momentarily caught in doubt and fear, and can bouy them in ways they’re hardly conscious of.

I also thought it was tremendously positive that so many showed an awareness of the need to take action, whether it was to make fundamental changes (25%) or to make clearer contact with the internal (a full 47%). Now, I always assume that I’m having experiences at least in part to draw my attention to something that may be brewing within the greater sphere, and these results, plus some recent experiences with individuals, have emphasized that there is a small contingent who are wrestling internally with change and the inevitability of it. They want to grow, they are aware that life is calling them to, and yet they are having great difficulty giving up the idea that they already know–what’s best, the way things ‘should’ be, who they are in the now, and though this drives them to seek guidance and situations that challenge them to grow, they also reject outright the feedback they’re receiving–because they cannot acknowledge that the ‘old’ knowledge that seemed to work so well for them before is no longer valid. I see this as a manifestation of Pluto in the final degree of Sagittarius; those who prosper are those who see that change is coming, and who surrender to a fresh input of information, that gives them the knowledge to go forward, successfully in charge of change within their own lives. This applies to everyone, myself included; for some, the hardest thing will be to give up the outdated idea of who or what they are.

And finally, the Moon enters Scorpio this morning, and we’re, yes, lookin’ for Love, and, you betcha, it’ll be in all the wrong places with this Moon that will dig a little too much, stirring something deep in the Scorpio cave; and by Love I mean any nurture or enrichment or comfort that brings security. How do we combat this tendency to turn over all the wrong rocks, to kiss all the wrong frogs? With a serious, even passionate, need for emotional honesty. Embracing our own emotional depths, accepting even the less shiny or flattering impulses we have, and as well forgiving those in others (even though we may be perfectly justified in holding trespassers at arm’s length!) is the way to deal with this Moon’s squares to the Nodal axis, Chiron, and Neptune. A commitment to emotional honesty also keeps at bay the possible hurt, delusion, and misdirection along the life path that comes to those who insist they couldn’t possess a darker side. An opposition to Vesta only challenges us, again, to be scrupulously truthful, specifically by putting that which is sacred before us and daring us to live up to what we say are our standards. Choose with care, and the Scorpio Moon’s trine to Uranus (the 25th at approx. 9 PM PST) will show how well we’ve handled this, and could bring forward a depth of satisfaction we didn’t really anticipate.

Monday Poll Round-Up, Past and Present Collide, and the Fog Rolls In

We only had one poll this week, ‘Is Love or Money your big ‘danger area’ with Venus in Capricorn?’ As of this morning, 28% say Love, 33% say Money, and a puzzling 39% are looking forward to this, as their natal Venus is in Earth; and I say this is puzzling, as we might expect more like 25% of readers to have Earth Venus placements. So what does this say? Maybe that people who are practical and concerned about concrete Venusian issues read astrology blogs out-of-proportion to their Airy, Watery, and Fiery counterparts.

I’ve had some intense, jarring experiences in the last few days where past and present have met in some unusual and intriguing symbolisms. People I haven’t thought of in years have popped into my head (or my dreams!) and the same seems to be happening to people around me–and I’m assuming, to you, too. What’s driving this? Perhaps Pluto at 29 of Sagittarius, exorcising the distant past, and conveying information about the now at the same time–if All is One, and there is no time in a linear sense, then a window is open that allows us to connect and synthesize elements of the past as they apply to the future, surely a delicious opportunity for understanding and acquisition of knowledge.

The Cancer Moon today (the 17th) quincunxes Pluto, suggesting that the emotional implications of the past and present reconciling will be at the forefront of our emotional reality; the Moon will also trine the Sun, then, when it enters Leo, trine Mars at 00 Sagittarius, and what action we might take will come clear. On the 21st the Earth perfects a quincunx to Pluto, bringing the material impact of all this Plutonian dredging and examining into focus (would that we could see this first, then receive the Mars/ Moon impetus to act, but ours is not to question why  . . . ) The upcoming Sun/ Mercury Superior Conjunction on the 24th brings the final message–believe what is communicated at this point, as it will be the key to finishing up with Sag issues successfully.

The fog rolls in–literally, as it has done here in Seattle, and figuratively, with the Mercury/ Neptune square. We know the drill here, know all the keywords that can describe Neptune’s effect on communication, information, short-distance travel, sibling relationships, and so on, so how do we determine which one of the scary (delusion, illusion, deception) or uplifting (inspirational, idealized, dream fulfilled) banners should be hung on Mercury for us as individuals? It’s elementary, dear Watson: look at the emotions behind the messages (Merc in Water) and the ways in which they clash with our ‘mental pictures’ (Neptune in Air). A secondary method involves looking to the positions of transiting Merc and Neptune in the natal chart, noting what they may be aspecting (anything at approx. 19-23 degrees of Air and Water signs, plus the ‘off’ measurements of the quincunx and semi-square)–if this puts at least one of them in hard (conjunction, square, semi-square, opposition, quincunx) aspect to something in the natal chart, then your message and meaning come here–and don’t forget, this is a conflict-meeting of the rulers of several Houses in the natal chart–look here, too, for meaning.
