Alexandra Day's 'Good Dog, Carl'

Alexandra Day’s ‘Good Dog, Carl’

When my girls were little we discovered a series of books that featured a babysitter named Carl and his adventures with the children he was tasked with watching. That’s cool, right? Except that Carl was a Rottweiler, and the children’s parents repeatedly put them in the most absurd, precarious, and dangerous situations without a care–as Carl would make sure it all worked out.

I loved these books; I have a keen sense of and fondness for the absurd, and I delighted in introducing my children to something so unreal. I still indulge in this, often asking kids of 6 or 7 if they’re married or have their driver’s license. They are old enough to recognize I’m saying a nutty thing, and it’s always fun to watch their reaction–ends up about half will laugh and say something like, ‘No!’ while the rest actually get a little angry, as if to say, ‘Why is this grown-up not playing the social game right?’

So is it just me, or are many individuals, and even larger entities, going to great lengths to convince others to accept the absurd? I’m looking at what’s going on in the sky right now, and we have one of the most solidly realist aspects imaginable at present, the square between Mars and Saturn, that brooks no nonsense and will nail all facts to the table–and perhaps I’m sensitive to the absurd v. the real right now with Mars and Saturn forming the base of a Fist of God with my natal Moon–ouch!–so what’s behind this for everyone else?

Maybe it’s the Ceres-Neptune opposition (Authority faces off against Idealism), or maybe it’s the approaching Finger of God with base of Pluto-Chiron and apex Mars–that’s like a Universal shout out for a Band-Aid® applied with a nail gun! It’s like saying, ‘We’ll heal through destruction, by wiping out the injuries (or maybe the injured!), and we’ll bring about that healing through martial means!’ Oh sure you will.

Usually I deal with the personal, so I think that’s how I’ll approach this question, too. With Vesta as current body of latest degree, we may find people are defending what they see as sacred, whether it makes sense or not, and whether it’s truly worth defending or not. The very idea that this is possibly what’s motivating us should give us pause–and spurred by the quincunx between Ceres and Juno, we might want to adjust our thinking about our own empowerment, and how much we do or don’t need the co-operation of authorities to achieve it. Jupiter and the Sun are in sextile, and Jupiter and Zeus are square; this shines a bright light on the social order, and through conflict on the ambitions and desires of those involved. This should give anyone willing to look a clear enough picture to determine whether we must go along with the absurd, or whether we can free ourselves, with a minimum of hurt (Uranus semi-sextile Chiron).

‘The Gathering of the Manna’ Tissot c1898 {{PD-Art}}

I saw Venus square Pluto, perfecting today, in action, as part of the long-term Uranus-Pluto square, with Venus making a T-square and only promising to get worse, as our Lady of Love heads toward conjunction with Zeus (ambition, lust, desire). The way I saw it play out was this: the group (or I should say, individuals appointing themselves as speaking for the group–Uranus is in Aries, after all) asks for discussion of ideas/ exercise of the intellect, but doesn’t like anyone they label as rebellious (others might call them original, thinking for themselves, or loners)–there is a right stance to take, and you must take it, and want to be part of our group, and if you don’t, you’re intellectually inadequate–because you couldn’t be as modern, learned, or smart as we are, otherwise you would conform! The group offers obliteration (via Pluto–of the intellect, the ego, or anything that indicates separateness) to those who don’t see the group’s standards as holding ultimate value–which says that the minute a Uranian entity like a group forms, it loses it’s Uranian qualities if it chooses to reject anything that differs from it–it in effect becomes Saturnian, authoritarian, intolerant.

Have you had an experience like this, have you watched the group reject anyone not willing to bow down? This is not the first time I’ve seen this, but I think the willingness to judge others so harshly can only be based on fear: of being left out themselves, of not being seen as worthy of high status, of having wasted their time, energy, money pursuing something someone else doesn’t seem to value or want. For some people there’s nothing worse than doing, buying, being something that others aren’t impressed by–I think I ran into them today.

What I saw followed the old idea that what comes out of someone else’s mouth says far more about them than it does about the person they’re speaking of–when I remembered that, I realized how little anything that was said, particularly that was said to me, had to do with me–and I went back and looked at my own assertions, because those are the ones I must own. I’d simply said that I didn’t think ‘x’ necessarily indicated ‘y’, nor did I believe it was necessary to follow a particular learning trajectory to end up at ‘y’–no more, no less. I just don’t hold a lot of ‘shoulds’ in assessing others–I believe the proof is in the work, and nowhere else, and I think that’s true in all areas of life: I don’t need to judge someone else as fit or not in some area, their life experiences will do that for them.

We enjoyed the Superior Conjunction today (the meeting of the Sun and Mercury with Mercury direct) which is typically a culmination point of its own. I’ve been watching for some time now as people show who they really are under the pressure of Uranus-Pluto, and like everyone I’ve been dealing with these same pressures myself. What I discovered was that I am not fearful enough, or insecure enough, and that I am not working to prove myself to others (the only person I need to impress is me), and so there are some people who will judge me and see me as inferior, because I won’t struggle with them (they think I should care what they think), or because I’m just not like them (they see their own way is superior, and if I don’t support that view, I’m wrong)–and that’s okay.

Stories–feel free to share ’em if you’ve got ’em! And have a great weekend (the Lunar portion of the forecast for tomorrow is below) Thank you!

The Push-Pull of the Tides: Uranus Retrograde, Saturn Direct

‘The Seashore’ Wm H Margetson 1900 {{PD-Art}}

Saturn goes direct evening of the 7th Pacific time, at 4 Scorpio 49, and Uranus, stalling out at about 12 and a half degrees of Aries, retrogrades on the 17th. This may feel a little like shifting tides; we’re just realizing something has lifted and loosened (Saturn) when the tension of the Uranus turnaround becomes apparent. A Uranus retrograde seems to manifest in chaotic encounters, accidents, and uncertainty, always very close to the actual retrograde date (typically only a day or two before and after, at most). I’ve observed tension at the retrograde point of other heavyweights, but Uranus seems to be different: we really do seem to be plunged into a kind of confusion when he withdraws, with a much higher chance of inattentiveness, carelessness, and even, if I may be so dramatic, betrayal (this latter showing in abrupt and often bewildering changes to our role within the group). Be aware that just as what was holding us back seems to ease, we encounter a kind of riptide, not always discernible to the observer, which is why we’re so often taken by surprise, and overwhelmed, when we swim into its path.

If either of these planets is in hard aspect to a natal point or body at the time of turnaround, the associated energies, as well as any House ruled, should be watched; with Saturn, we look for clues as to what might progress, and where we might feel a removal of impediments–or, for those like me, who actually find themselves with restrictions lifted when Saturn is retro, we might see a slowing and inexplicable halt to what seemed to be sailing along just fine–while with Uranus it’s about the unexpected, with caution in related areas called for. In any case, it’s a chance to get a little bit of a jump on what could become trouble areas–and those not into astrology will swear it all comes ‘out of the blue’.

A Look Back: Egypt’s Morsi

'An Arab Caravan Outside a Fortified Town in Egypt' Jean-Leon Gerome c1900 {{PD-Art}}

‘An Arab Caravan Outside a Fortified Town in Egypt’ Jean-Leon Gerome c1900 {{PD-Art}}

This originally appeared in ECLIPSE just after Morsi’s election on 30 June 2012–thought it was worth another look now:

The new president of Egypt, Mohamed Mohamed Morsi Isa al‐Ayat, was born 20 August 1951, ntk, in the Sharqia Governorate, in northern Egypt‐‐since the birthplace is not pinpointed, and the province itself rather small, I chose the capital city, Zagazig Az‐zaq. Morsi’s rise is meteoric only in the sense of his arrival on the world stage; he was a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood, but gained the globe’s attention when, in the wake of the Egyptian Revolution, he became the candidate of the newly formed political arm of the Brotherhood, the Freedom and Justice Party. Now, with his election to president, Morsi brings unquestioned loyalty to the Brotherhood and their beliefs to a previously secular post‐‐and, having seen other instances where religious figures rose to political power within the Arab world, the West watches and waits to know the direction its one‐time ally (Egypt) will take.

Public life may be a challenging road, one that fills personal ambitions for Morsi, if he can continue in creating the illusion that he has so far‐you’ll see why I call it an illusion in a moment. He has Jupiter, his relationship to and attitude toward the social sphere, in aggressive and independent Aries‐‐right away he may have problems in the social arena, if he doesn’t get to be the leader! With the exception of one aspect, Jupiter is harshly contacted‐‐but oh that one aspect: it’s a trine to Pluto, suggesting that a powerful leadership position is just the thing for him, and easily attained.

The other Jupiter aspects, though, tell the rest of the story, with the most startling perhaps being the sesquiquadrates to the Sun and Juno, which create a Fist of God with Jupiter apex=if he can mesh the identity‐Soul needs with his empowerment options (which are in some way at odds with the Soul, my guess being that his Leo Sun would simply prefer to be dictator!) then he will actualize the potential leadership role‐‐done and done. Sun, hZeus, and Pluto are all conjunct in Leo, in fact, painting a portrait of someone power‐hungry and focused on acquiring that power for the Self‐‐the Fist, and so the public, simply becomes a way of fulfilling personal goals. Jupiter also is quincunx Mercury (adjustment to speech and writing is necessary for harmony with the public) and square Uranus (the individuality and urge to uniqueness and rebellion were easily channeled against the previous regime, but really want to express as total independence from having to answer to those who put him in place‐‐we must remember that Jupiter is also religion and religious hierarchy). Jupiter also opposes Neptune, placing it firmly (and possibly literally) in opposition to ideals, and we note that Neptune rules both the North Node and Ceres, suggesting a fundamental rejection of both what is ’natural’, and of the future; this is a ‘live in the moment’ guy.

Saturn, which would logically make a significant appearance in the chart of someone strongly involved with a religious hierarchy, barely shows up, here sitting at 00 Libra, so that the idea of hierarchy, discipline, rules are all ’new’ to him; and in Libra, the philosophy presented was likely one of co‐operation, where following the rules and Self‐discipline are not just sacred, they define one as a man (sextile to Mars‐Vesta conjunction). Morsi recognizes the wisdom of this (Saturn trine Pallas), yet justifies his own use of sincere religious principle to further his own wants as required payback for past injury (Saturn square Chiron).

Astrologically speaking, Morsi appears to be an individual who has fooled (or maybe just used) the Muslim Brotherhood for his own, power‐hungry ends; but will this marriage last? Without House cusps, it’s very hard to say, though from the transits, I’m thinking the honeymoon might last awhile, though not indefinitely; Jupiter is in Gemini, soon to square his Nodal axis, signaling that ’people talk’, and though not enough to bring him down, information or gossip propagated now may sow the seeds of his eventual fate. t Chiron is conjunct the natal NN right now, suggesting that his use of very personal and specific skills have led him in his destined direction. t Pluto is moving to oppose natal Uranus, and t Chiron to trine it, suggesting that, as long as he can downplay the individuality urge, the rebelliousness within him to the Brotherhood (because for him it’s all about him, not any kind of religious ideal), and promise healing to the masses, he’ll remain in place. Having attained a pinnacle with the presidency, the vaunted Self‐regard and insistence on doing as he pleases shown by his Sun‐hZeus‐Pluto conjunction will not allow him to ever back down or let go.

t Neptune’s upcoming contact to natal Saturn by quincunx says that Morsi may successfully obscure his own goals or create an illusion that satisfies others, but it will take effort on his part; however, t Pluto trines the natal SN once again in January 2013, possibly stirring those old power urges and prompting a grab, and around August of next year (2013), t Jupiter conjuncts natal Uranus‐‐with this meeting we may watch as his individuality is ’seen’, by religious leaders, or by the masses, and considering that t Saturn will have recently squared natal Mars, reality ’threatening’ his manhood, we may see some fireworks, rebellious behavior, radical responses, or a ’beginning of the end’, as it seems to me a violent finale may be inevitable for this ambitious, would‐be dictator (that Sun‐hZeus‐Pluto natal conjunction in Leo, a human powder keg to which someone, probably himself, will eventually set a match).

Well, if you find my pessimism off-putting, now’s the time to stop reading! Or you can call it realism, and go on. The past two days or so, something has been in the air, and now that I’m looking at the chart for Mercury’s turnaround, I see what it is: Merc began to backtrack in the 6 AM hour Pacific of the 26th, coming off pursuit of Vesta, the only close aspect at the time a sextile to Sedna–and even that doesn’t perfect. Couple this with Venus’ stress at the end of Cancer, then today’s entry into Leo, Jupiter’s flight into exaltation in Cancer, and two oddballs, Vesta sesquiquadrate Neptune, and Uranus opposed hZeus while Chiron quincunxes it, and we see some interesting dynamics expressed. There may be a lot of ‘defending of the Faith’ when that is precisely the subject that needs examining; whatever it is that we’ve been (rather desperately) insisting is sacred is exactly what needs to be dragged into the light this Mercury retrograde. Venus in Leo gives us the strength to examine it without falling apart–unless that vanity is part of the problem. Jupiter allows the social sphere to play the part of kindly showing us what needs fixing, if we’ll only pay attention, as functions performed will include dispelling illusions about what we revere and shocks concerning ambitions and desires that poke at our primal wound and make us unreasonable (aside from the way we should be listening with our spirits, rather than with our minds, due to the retrograde). It makes for some confused and angry individuals, and a great deal of defensive blather even when no one is attacking. The best advice, perhaps, is that when you are bitten for trying to help, don’t take it personally.

Sweden

This is from the current issue of ECLIPSE, published last Thursday. For more, please subscribe!

Riots are spreading through certain enclaves of Stockholm, specifically those housing immigrants; claiming marginalization and segregation from the mainstream is increasingly prevalent, claiming racism and class-ism in a country known for its efforts at equitable treatment, protesters are lighting cars and property on fire and attacking responding police and fire units–and this has been going on for days. This crisis seems to have been building for many years, so I wondered what we might learn about the dynamic here by looking at the chart generally considered appropriate for the founding of modern-day Sweden, 6 June 1523 no time known in Stockholm, with current transits to it.

I randomly drew the transit chart for about 10 AM local time in Stockholm for the 22nd of May. The first thing I notice is that Jupiter is just 1 degree 51 minutes from conjunction with Sweden’s natal Gemini Sun. The Sun in the chart of a country can stand for the leader, the King or President, but can also stand for the ‘energy heart’ of a nation. Jupiter meets the country’s Sun; this could be seen both as ‘foreigners’ meeting the heart of the nation, but also as the populace, society at large, applying to the nation’s identity. Attempts to expand Sweden’s social arena are now being seen for what they are by all accounts, lacking an inclusive and accepting quality.

This same Jupiter also trines the country’s n Sedna, while t Sedna and t Mars are conjunct and in semi-sextile to the Sun. Things are coming up from the depths of the national psyche, and spurring anger/ violence (and the setting of fires! so very Martian), yet Sedna also conveys a lack of awareness here: both rioters/ immigrants and entrenched native Swedes do not see themselves or these events with any clarity–which promises the tensions will continue.

Interesting, too, that t hZeus is exactly conjunct Sweden’s n Juno=ambitions and wants are coming ‘from the outside’ and demanding equal empowerment. We also note a natal aspect of Vesta opposed Pluto, with a soon to occur Pluto Return! The natal aspect itself could imply that for many years Sweden has elevated the highest ideals and honored the worth of home and family structure, while denying internal darkness or destructive urges–and certainly, in modern times they have made a point of non-aggression. The question becomes, though, if you have this aspect, once you transform your system into your ideal, the most advanced (from your viewpoint) possible, where does the Plutonian energy go? You’ve created a system that claims to value all equally, perhaps never anticipating the influx of immigrants so culturally different from Swedes. This Pluto Return may bring that dilemma up to the surface, and out into the light.

Here, let this tranquil picture of a woman and her owl soothe you. by Valentine Cameron Prinsep {{PD-Art}}

I think we need to disentangle ourselves from the tense vortex of external events and internal tensions in which we all seem to be spinning. Easier to say than do, at this point, with Mars and the Sun conjoined in the 29th degree of Aries–either alone in an anaretic degree would be stressful, but together they become an intense martial weapon sent out into the cosmos, as if the combination elevates the Martian ‘attack/ weapon’ energy to nuclear intensity by adding the reactor that is the Sun. We all feel it; maybe we can use it (or at least express some of the energy safely) if we can re-direct it, as the eclipse/ Full Moon slated for the 25th will need our attention (it promises to show us that a dream, goal, or aim we thought was impossible isn’t–for more, see ECLIPSE).

The Sun’s current House position in your chart may suggest a good outlet for what amounts to a nuclear bomb’s worth of power. Pinpoint goals related to this area and release the beast–and watch it all get done. This may (if the Sun doesn’t change Houses for you before the eclipse) be the beginning stage of the revelation that’s to come with the Full Moon; by the day of the eclipse Pallas and Venus will be conjunct in Taurus, far enough from the eclipse that they don’t figure in to its meaning, but still exerting their own influence, by uniting values and wisdom, showing the worth of following that inner source of guidance, and by temporarily using both relationships and finances as a vehicle for useful, smart information.

Subscribers: my apologies for a mistake in the 5-11 April issue that contains the Lunar eclipse assessment for this coming Full Moon. I wrote at one point that Mars is in Aries and so more intense for the effect; this is incorrect, it will be in Taurus, and is so noted as there in the rest of the eclipse discussion. I probably had way too many charts up at one time, and looked at the wrong one! The Warrior being in Taurus only reinforces a sense of more material-oriented action, toning down the Will and bringing more emphasis to the physical and to resources.

To those who are thinking of subscribing: order now and receive all three issues that contain the complete assessment of the upcoming 3-part eclipse series! For a traditional viewpoint, please see this by the excellent Peter Stockinger.

Another day, another time. ‘Rainy Day, Boston’ Childe Hassam 1885 {{PD-Art}}

The bombings in Boston yesterday are, like all such events, horrific, and asto enthusiasts may note this occurred with the Sun-Mars conjunction in Aries–a fiery and martial placement and combination–and with these two sextile Vesta, and widely conjunct a distressed Venus at 29 Aries. This points to values as the motivating force, and, considering the kinds of injuries involved (shrapnel and limb, especially lower limb) and the choice of place and time (Patriot’s Day, a world-renowned marathon) my thought was that this was sparked by rage at such injuries, which are distinctly the kinds created by war, and especially by IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device). I believe the perpetrator (and I think there’s only one) has either suffered this kind of loss him- or herself, or that this has happened to a loved one, and shattered their respective worlds. No matter what their pain, it is no excuse for inflicting the same on others. I send my thoughts and prayers to those who were injured and traumatized, and my gratitude to those who ran toward the blasts, to help–and I’m sure most, likely even all, my readers do, too.

The bombing can be seen in the light of the Pluto retrograde, as part of the need to express that often surrounds a change in direction point. I had planned to talk a little about venting those smaller matters that we bury until such an astrological event cracks open the cellar door, as described in the previous post by the retro’s sextile to Chiron, signifying mild hurts; but of course this applies to deeply seated rage, to passion and obsession, as well, if that is what has been suppressed or ignored. I think we’ll find our personal subjects for the retro period in the House(s) in the natal chart ruled by Scorpio; at least, that’s where I’m finding mine! What House is Scorpio on for you, and what experiences have you correlated with the Pluto retro over the past few days–and are these the same areas, or do they differ?

In this 14th century picture we see Ghenghis Khan in negotiations, in watercolors and gold on paper, from a work by Rashid-ad-Din {{PD}}

Lately the whole world seems to be wondering what Kim Jung-Un, leader of North Korea, is up to. In ECLIPSE I wrote of him: ” . . . there may be a need to be rebellious, but if one sees the past as having contained ‘the revolution’ what does one then revolt against, in order to continue to identify as a rebel? If one has an international stage upon which to act, then one with Mars in Libra, and Pluto and Saturn in Scorpio, all in the reputation 10th, may make shows of anger at ‘partners’, and threats of destruction and obliteration to show one’s authority, a mainstay of the agenda.” My conclusions were that Kim’s father set the behavioral expectations, and may have contaminated his son with the idea that only shows of force gain one the respect of others–but it also appears to me that Kim’s natural inclinations are to be co-operative, to commune and share knowledge. It may take a long time, but, if Kim can refrain from listening to any ‘old school’ advisers, he may eventually stop the threats and open up to new forms of exchange; in effect, he may ‘rebel’ against what he was taught. He is coming up on his Saturn Return (if the birth chart rectified by Paul Saunders at Solaris Astrology is correct, which I think it probably is), a time when he may be particularly determined to show how far he’s come, what his ‘accomplishments’ are–so it may feel to him especially important to let the world hear him roar, right now. At most I think NK may fire a missile into the ocean–I’d be very surprised if it went much farther than that.

Tried and Tried Again: Amanda Knox

‘Le Bateau Atelier’ Monet 1876 {{PD-Art}}

Tried and acquitted for the 2007 murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, while both were students in a study-abroad program in Perugia, Italy, American Amanda Knox found that the Italian justice system allows for the prosecution to appeal the verdict, a step unheard-of in the United States system without the surfacing of new evidence. A new trial will now go forward, though at present it does not appear that Knox will be required to attend, and if convicted, there will be an automatic appeal; only after a final conviction would Italy then move to extradite Knox, though her American lawyers have already sited our ‘Double Jeopardy’ rule (where an individual, once tried and acquitted, cannot again be tried for the same offense) as a reason not to hand her over. Of course, how sorry is Knox that her book is coming out in just about one month, concurrent with her first interview since her release? Not too, I’m thinking, as I assume her publishers were watching proceedings in the Italian Supreme Court, waiting for just such a sales-spurring ruling.

Do I sound cynical about this case? Yes, I am, largely because from the very beginning, I felt that one’s perception of Amanda Knox was based on just how willing an individual is to see what’s really in front of them.  She’s the classic Rorschach test for each and every observer: for those who are co-dependent, who carry someone in their own life they want to see in a soft light (and so must see that in others who ‘fit the profile’), those who want to pretend darkness doesn’t exist, or those who genuinely don’t see the evil in others, because they don’t have it in themselves, these individuals seem to feel her trial is a travesty, that such an obvious innocent couldn’t have bound and slashed another young woman, slowly torturing her to death. For those who can accept that a book is not so easily summed up in its cover, there are dimensions to be seen in Knox, and possibilities, both for the night in question and for other choices and statements, to be examined–but we will look through the lens of the natal chart, for what it may tell us.

Amanda Knox (9 July 1987  2:47 AM Seattle Washington USA) has a natal chart that perfectly describes this mirror quality, this way in which others look into her physical being (and this is an important point–more in a minute), and see only what they are capable of believing. She has her Earth (the material state we must create in order to live our Soul–Sun–Purpose) in Capricorn conjunct Neptune in the 8th of other people’s resources=we think we are looking at hard realities, but we’re seeing an illusion that bounces back what’s within us. With this conjunction, it’s even easy to forgive the too-generous assessments of Knox’s character; these reviews are informed with an idealism (Neptune) imported by the observer. The key to seeing Knox clearly, though, isn’t found only in the ability to withhold one’s projections, it’s also found in the realization that the physical beingness (Earth) is providing the illusion (Neptune). We read her and think we ‘know’, but we are taking cues from the physicality that are deceptive, not necessarily deliberately, but certainly played upon by the canny Knox. The Italian and world tabloid press dubbed her ‘angel face’ and ‘foxy knoxy’ during her trial, a good illustration of the physical influence.

With Sedna obscuring things from the unconscious 12th, in generous trine to both Earth and Neptune, Knox may keep a lot riding on this combo: it may allow her to project the image she wants, without too much conscious thought, making the image seem all the more valid to onlookers, and hiding the life-death-life associations, and the play between roles and expectations, even from herself. And speaking of identity, the Cancer Sun in the 2nd quincunxes the 7th House Saturn in Sagittarius, uniting the 4th and the 8th and 9th, family/ feelings about deepest Self, other people and their resources, and foreign travel, among other things, suggesting that the Self is uneasy in situations that combine these, and/ or that the Self is uneasy in reality itself (Sun qnx Saturn). This little complex, and a lot more, was activated on the day of Meredith’s murder.

Did Amanda Knox murder her roommate? Her frequently changed story in the early days of the investigation did not help her case; she blamed a lot of other people, at various points, with further court actions aplenty. I have a very strong opinion on the case–but so do many others, and all of us may be under that Neptunian spell, judging nothing but our own illusions
