Johann Bayer {{PD}}

Decades ago I’d written most of a book on something I termed the Void, the ways we malfunction when we deny, distort, or otherwise misinterpret our Lunar needs (those signified by our natal Moon placement). I talked about the Gap, the space between our genuine needs and our misunderstanding of those needs, and our inadequate attempts to bridge the two, with a goal of offering ways to recognize and remedy these imbalances. The book didn’t go anywhere (it was never completed), but it seems like now might be a good time to pick the bones for any tasty bits they may contain, and if I find enough worth passing on to you, dear Reader, I’ll probably also include it in the Moon book (as the fundamental need is based on Luna), with the new book to be finished (I’ve been working on it every day!) sometime before I expire. I hope. Here on the blog I’ll be posting, in no particular order, some of my thoughts on sign needs and dysfunction, for your edification, discussion, and rebuttal, as inspired by that old manuscript. First up, Virgo.

It starts with a fundamental need: for Virgo, the need is to accept ‘what is’. With Mercury as its ruler, we might think that the need would be a mental one, and it is; if we tailor that idea to the proclivities of Virgo, what we find is that the mentality is employed in a function of discernment–and it’s this automatic impulse to judge, sort, categorize, assess, and account for, that is to discriminate via characteristics, that can also describe certain weaknesses, namely a tendency to believe that because the inclination is to judge, that judging is necessary, that every circumstance must be vetted and assessed by the Virgo energy. As in all things, for all people, just because Virgo can, doesn’t necessarily mean Virgo should.

Healthy discrimination and discernment are the ability to perceive differences and/ or comprehend relative worth (‘worth’ being defined as uses and/ or functions) between or among persons or objects. This differs from criticism and judgment in a single, important way: it doesn’t assign a valuation or character of ‘good’ or ‘bad’ to what is. It instead encourages the understanding of what exists and the recognition of its worth without imposing an idea of worthiness, or a moral assessment.

Wherever our Virgo energies are by House, we run the risk of failing or refusing to recognize and accept reality, and when in that state of Beingness we’ll be unable to sort appropriate from inappropriate behavior, or know which is the baby, which is the bathwater. For instance, we can easily discriminate between a butterfly and a moth. We can discern their differing functions and note the variations in appearance. If we make a critical judgment of butterflies and moths, though, we may judge moths to be ugly (no pretty colors) and ‘bad’ (they eat our woolens), while we may judge butterflies to be beautiful and ‘good’.

It’s one thing to recognize disparities and understand differences, it’s quite another to make pronouncements on the worth of, in our example, the moth and the butterfly; that kind of judgment means the conclusions reached aren’t objective absolutes, and if there’s room for disagreement, then one has rendered an opinion, not stated a fact, and so wandered into subjective criticism territory.

By Charles J. Sharp – Own work, from Sharp Photography, sharpphotography, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=25023269

To work through the shadow side of Virgo, reality must be seen and accepted; that is, Virgo energy must know all about what makes the butterfly different from the moth, and in acknowledging the factual nature of these differences, let go of the prerogative seized, that of believing Virgo is entitled to judge the value of the life and functions of the moth vs. the butterfly. Two things help in acceptance of ‘what is’: 1) refuse to allow the mind to dictate priorities (as in believing in the rightness of its own judgments), and 2) realize that it’s inappropriate to sit in judgment of anything (and remember, this is much different than discrimination/ discernment). As soon as we give a ‘value label’, we distance ourselves, making the world and others into ‘things’ and reinforcing the proclivity to judge.

The difficult part for Virgo is that the facility for discernment is an asset, a strength–but anything used to excess inevitably warps into a liability–and this is what Virgo faces, the need to learn to accept the way things are, and to use that facility for discernment to determine whether judging is even the right thing for them to do. Assessment is Virgo’s natural response to, well, everything, but not every situation requires forensic dissection, nor is a pronouncement about the state or quality of every component of every situation desirable. Virgo won’t know that until the ability for discernment is firmly focused on reality, and simultaneously awareness is achieved that the autonomy and authenticity of others, and of things, situations, feelings, everything that makes up the fabric of life, has not only its own character, but an unquestioned right to exist, and that those things will be what they are whether or not Virgo judges them. Virgo must learn that the very fact something exists isn’t an invitation for a critique.

For Virgo, this all comes from a pure intent, one that strives to improve everything in its sphere. If we’re talking about a Virgo Moon, then we need to understand that there is an emotional need to feel competent, organized, informed, ready to ‘share the harvest’ in whatever form Virgo recognizes it as taking–and as well, there’s a fear of not having a clear accounting, of not having a sense of who’s responsible for what, and a fear of being in possession of a list of criticisms that aren’t being addressed. These conditions, linked with the Lunar consciousness, will feel like chaos to Virgo, like the Piscean energy of its opposite number has thrown a shroud of fog and confusion over Virgo’s attempt to keep careful, detailed books–and for Virgo, nothing could be (or feel) worse.

Though I’ve focused here on the shadow characteristics of the sign, Virgo excels in some of the most vital qualities to guarantee not just survival, but an ability to thrive. The properties Virgo offers allow us to discern the poisonous berry from the edible one, because Virgo took the time to study the fruit’s characteristics, to note in what ways they differ, and to make remembering (another Mercury function) what we know about these berries important. Virgo’s also the one who wrote down the recipe for berry pie, and paid attention to what conditions the berries needed so that we could plant them close to home. Am I making Virgo sound a little plodding, a little too mundane? But that’s the beauty of it! Virgo knows things, knows the details, and shares that knowledge in a clear and comprehensive fashion–and that’s something we should thank them for.

Things to think about, related to your Virgo energy: consider that interactions don’t need to be tracked on a balance sheet, of who owes what to whom; in what way do you freely serve related to Virgo? Do you ever give anonymously, and keep it anonymous? That would be your Virgo! List things you like about yourself (not physical features) and consider ways you can share these qualities with others in forms that benefit them; what’s the goal, when you offer criticism? How do you feel about partnership and sharing? Those can be two ‘prickly pear’ issues in chart areas where Virgo is located. Do you delight in attending to details, joyously getting lost in the texture of them, or do you resent them, feeling like they slow down progress?

Signs your Virgo energy is operating in shadow mode: overly critical, sometimes using this as the only form of communication, critical of others ‘for their own good’; detail obsessed (and consequently not giving enough attention to the Big Picture; proud of perfectionism; pettiness; lacking a sense of priorities and proportions (for example, making the color of the car as important as its performance); confusing productivity with busyness; fixes and serves even when those efforts are intrusive; the humble-brag of ‘I’m just a worker bee’ (false modesty) no matter what the actual role, accompanied by a laundry list of what the larger organization ‘needs to do to improve’; cattiness or gossip meant to make yourself look informed or better than the one criticized (where Gemini’s gossip is more about spreading info, even when it’s unproductive)

Signs your Virgo energy is operating really well: a rhythm to proceedings/ efforts; not offering an opinion unless asked; being organized in such a way that a larger purpose is served; knowing what information is important, and willingly sharing it; taking on responsibilities without resentment; taking care of the Big Picture simultaneous to attending to meaningful details; having and using good judgment; you know where everything is! work and play are balanced; any debt is well-handled; appreciation of dry humor and word-play; no issues with sorting through possessions, coupled with an ease at throwing out what’s no longer needed; able to edit the life and keep it on track toward goals; the patience to ‘nurse’ things along, when appropriate

Special note for those with: Pluto in Virgo=when activated this can plunge you down a complicated, labyrinthine rabbit hole in matters related to the House where it’s posited, confusing you, stymieing you, causing you to tilt at windmills, or it can make you a genius at organization and research in House areas, with info at the ready to support change, and an always-transforming-according-to-new-information attitude. You’re not scared of change, sex, death, or the Karmic ledger, you just want to always be completely informed about your status with each

Uranus in Virgo=Higher Mind can get bogged down in details or regulations, with this placement, and the group may exert more influence than is healthy, or activation can liberate you from unnecessary constraint, as you read the contract fine print and see that many conditions don’t apply, due to your uniqueness. You can embrace the academic and flow with the serendipitous accident or spontaneous idea or improvisation, just as long as you feel you know what you’re agreeing to

Saturn in Virgo=myopia is the dysfunctional expression of this, where you miss the forest for the seedlings underfoot, but it also means that under other circumstances reality delivers a sparkling, informative load of detail and meaning to you, giving you a navigation and decision-making advantage. Control of information flow or contract terms may be a big deal for you in some way; you’d do well to learn when you can lighten up and enjoy the fruits of your labor, and when it’s paramount you pay attention and buckle down

I hope you’ve enjoyed this! I don’t know when I’ll get back with a post about another sign, but will be back with a Full Moon report within a week. Until then, thank you, and stay safe!

New Moon in Pisces March 2018 A Goldilocks Moon

Jessie Willcox Smith – ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ 1915 Illustration for a soap company {{PD}}

The New Moon occurs at 6:11 AM Pacific Daylight time at 26 Pisces 53. Both bodies (Sun, Moon) are applying conjoined Chiron, sextile Sedna and catching Uranus at the rough midpoint, square Vesta, and widely square Mars, the latter two together in Sagittarius, with Mars at the stressful 29 degree mark. The New Moon is also headed toward a sesquiquadrate with the North Node, and is in wide separating trine to Jupiter, which suggests what was recently promised by Jupiter is now in the rear-view mirror, not exactly gone, but at least temporarily losing relevance and certainly making connecting with that Jupiterian potential impossible right now (and we might ask ourselves, what ‘new’ do we need to learn, related to that Jupiter possibility, that will make actually obtaining what we want possible? Look to matters of the House where the New Moon and retro Jupiter fall in the natal chart. The NM Mars could make us feel as if we must act on it–but the time’s not right, yet)–the sesquiquadrate to the North Node only adds to this, making the road ahead appear particularly bumpy from our current vantage point.

Forming so close to Chiron suggests the New Moon brings potentials for hurt or healing–but which? We get a clue in the sextile to Sedna, which finds Uranus at the midpoint; this promises that something prompted either by the instincts or the ‘blind spot’ (that is, that we stumble into, rather than deliberately choose) will bring something unexpected or shocking, will garner the input of the group, or will foster understanding, not just intellectually, but emotionally, even intuitively. We must also consider that the knowledge, opportunity, or belief ‘withdrawal’ suggested by Jupiter may be the source of the wounding or healing. Whatever it is, it challenges our commitments, our priorities, or our highest values, with responsibility one way or another falling back on us and our own (possibly) poor decisions or potentially arising from aggression or conflicts sparked by others. This New Moon gives us the opportunity to reckon with our own and others’ ego urges and assertiveness, and to do so via our capacity for creative thinking, or through applying ideals to the imagination (Pisces); like Goldilocks, we’ll need to ask: Are we too aggressive and Self-involved, or are we giving our own needs too little attention or regard, or are we just right? The NM lays the emotional groundwork to successfully deal with this question, and when Mercury retrogrades in Aries on the 22nd, it will be prime time for reviewing and changing our actions (retro in Fire), particularly the way we act out or express the ego and action urges (Aries); we’ll have this New Moon to thank for a least a portion of our insights.

With Mars at its current position (29 Sagittarius) we may feel we’ll have to act in order to learn, but that would be premature–wait for Merc’s turnaround, as more will then be revealed–at this New Moon point, it’s all about feeling, intuiting, and communing, to discover our precise relationship to the Universe–modifications come later. One thing we may have to face at this time is that there is no difference between our woundedness and our ability to heal–and that in response to that awareness, action need not and often should not automatically be our answer to what’s revealed. Hints as to what follows are found here–

Utagawa Hiroshige – ‘Cuckoo Flying Under a Full Moon’ 19th century {{PD}}

The Sabian symbol for the New Moon in Pisces is, ‘The Harvest Moon Illumines A Clear Autumnal Sky’. This suggests opposites, through the imagery of a Full Moon, and autumn rather than the spring that’s soon to come (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere–for those in the Southern Hemisphere, the message may be simple: in the beginning is the end, and it is now). This could imply for Northerners that New Moon events play out through the summer and come to some sort of peak in the fall, or that what is born with the New Moon has the seeds of its completion, its ending, built in. That suggests not only that if we look carefully we will see the outcome to events already implied in their beginnings, promising a ‘harvest’ proportional to our efforts now, but that what happens now may also bring endings–that is, that the New Moon beginning has arisen from the completion of other cycles, that it’s time for other efforts to naturally terminate, conclude, or die. The imagery may also suggest we note Virgo at this point, in any or all of its guises within the personal life. That means subjects, qualities, and even people we associate with the sign may hold one or more keys to the meaning of events. Earth sits in Virgo, and that means those symbols will be literal, or at least tangible; check also the subjects of the House in the natal chart that holds Virgo for clues as to what may inform the New Moon event. ‘Discernment’ may be a key concept–also ‘criticism’, ‘accountability’, ‘results’. The ‘Circle of Life’ may be extraordinarily apparent right now–embrace this as a natural part of things, and appreciate what you have, in the present.

How to Make It Through the Holidays: Virgo

Illustrating at least part of the spirit of Virgo 'The Harvesters' by Brueghel {{PD-art}}

No matter what you do or don’t celebrate, it’s the holiday season–there’s no way to avoid it. In the newsletter I shared a few tongue-in-cheek suggestions for how to survive this annual time of family, food, fights, fun, fruitcake, and all those other ‘f’ words, and I’ll be sharing a little advice for each sign, one at a time. Your Nemesis, listed at the end of the sign, suggests who might be out to sabotage or just give you a hard time, while your angel is the sign energy you can call on in others for assistance, and your personal elf or cherub is the sign energy that will cheer you up and work behind the scenes to make your holiday special. Watch for the rest of the signs during the coming weeks.

Virgo  You are so thorough, so attentive to detail, that trying to attain perfection just comes naturally–which is why people begin to respond so negatively when it comes to your 2,000th ‘suggestion’ for a better holiday. It’s not that your ideas aren’t good, it’s that once the party has started nobody much wants to fuss over whether everyone is using coasters and those charms to identify their glasses and are they wiping their feet before they come in it’s raining out and oh gosh let’s just make sure everyone takes their shoes off and maybe we ought to have a timer for the bathroom because Stu has been in their 5 and 1/2 minutes or maybe we should have a sign-up sheet . . . see where I’m going here? Micro-management does not a holiday atmosphere make. In order to protect yourself from the criticism you almost inevitably attract at some point this time of year, you might want to make a pact with yourself: before the party or gathering, obsess away; during the party or gathering, act like a Pisces 🙂  Your Nemesis this holiday season: Leo, Libra, or a real Pisces/ Your secret angel: Taurus/ Your own personal elf or cherub: Capricorn

1 March 2010: Expressive Moon

3 AM PST and the Virgo Moon opposes lovely Piscean Venus, suggesting the emotions detach from their relationship roots and sit ‘out there.’ Feelings of alienation, wishing to be part of the larger scene (Pisces), and a too-critical stance toward the love object, one’s finances, or one’s talents is likely. It’s just a blip, so ride it out. By 8 AM PST the Moon opposes Uranus and our attention turns to the group or to expressing our own individuality, but take care; we may be too critical of our own creations and ideas, and we may think the group can’t keep up–and they’ll surprise us. At the same time the Moon squares Ceres, making us feel prickly toward authority and perhaps upsetting digestion and allergies–Mother Nature sees fit to stir up the morning hours (and lots of pollen).

Earth and Moon courtesy of NASA

By 10 AM PST the Virgo Moon quicunxes Neptune, giving us pause and the need to sort real from imaginary (or truth from deceit), and by 11 AM PST the Moon’s quincunx to Chiron says we may be fixed on hurt or on trying to heal. Shortly thereafter the Void begins, and we while away the time until the Moon enters Libra at 4:31 PM PST and immediately sextiles Mars at 00–bam! anger and aggression jump forward in relationships–though exchanges are wreathed in smiles and ‘please’ we will still feel the Martian energy coming at us (of from us). Even those who don’t think they have a beef will become relationship pugilists, and will probably be fighting (irony alert!) in the name of love. And, we won’t be shy about communicating our irritation–Moon quincunxes Mercury–just try to keep us from speaking out!

By 6 PM the Moon is within quincunx to Juno, as well, and that creates a Finger of God with Moon apex and Mercury and Juno as arms. This says that empowerment efforts and communciation issues combine and find expression through feeling–great for jazz musicians, public speakers, fundraisers, and preachers, among others–time communication efforts for this period and ‘impassioned’ will be the word used to describe you.

By 8 PM PST the Moon is tight with Saturn, and since Saturn is in his exaltation in Libra, we might see a need to make emotions manifest (rather than the clamping down on emotion we might otherwise expect). This is a creative aspect we can all take advantage of, if only to translate our emotional needs into an understanding of the kind of environment and relationships we truly require.

1 Feb 2010: The Virgo Way

Moon, My Daily Astrology Diary, the Magazine, Virgo

The Moon moves through Virgo and we all feel the attention put on detail–not necessarily with precision and fine work, but more in a ‘can’t see the forest for the trees’ kind of approach–we want to parse the nuances successfully, but a lot of other energies are getting in the way of unfettered perception, particularly the lingering Fist described in the previous entry https://juliedemboski.wordpress.com/2010/01/30/30-jan-2010-config-a-palooza/ and also because of the long-present Chiron/ Neptune conjunction–the question here might be, Does it hurt yet? because many of us have been walking around believing it doesn’t hurt, covering the wounding nature of some aspect of our lives with illusion or denial. Now that Jupiter has moved along, it’s much harder to believe the concoction we’ve devised as a distraction–we’re becoming aware of the extent of the damage, and the way in which there is something wounding we must acknowledge and deal with–and the Virgo Moon’s journey helps bring us one step closer to resolution.

Elizabeth I, the perfect Virgo in her role as ‘Virgin Queen,’ is discussed in this issue of Eclipse

First let’s look at a few other features of the skies above: Vesta in Virgo opposes Jupiter in Pisces, while Jupiter quincunxes Saturn, suggesting we’ll be faced with a real test of our values and beliefs, and must adjust reality to accomodate them; Venus at the midpoint of Ceres and Juno, and Mercury square Juno, placing relationships and values at the mercy of authorities and our own need for empowerment–this needn’t be unpleasant or have a bad end, so long as we don’t think sacrificing our standards or those we care for will bring us the desired power; and Mars is sesquiquadrate Uranus, implying that, as we’ve seen repeatedly of late, the ego is uncomfortable with the group, productive action vies with unconsidered impulse, and anger fuels an anarchic response in others.

So that’s a lot of potential discomfort, dicey decision-making, and possible chaos, isn’t it? The Virgo Moon at the very least helps to keep us sharp, or at least trying to stick to the goal–and that’s something we can be thankful for. The midnight hour PST of the 1st sees the Moon quincunx the Sun=emotions and intuition jostle with what’s illuminated for us–which do we believe, our inner senses or our outer ones? By 8 AM PST the Moon quincunxes Venus, trines Mercury, and sextiles Pallas=for West Coasters it’s quite a way to start the day, at odds with loved ones, telling it like it is, and feeling intuitively that this is the smart way to behave–and maybe it is, but we won’t find out right away, though the die will be cast by 10 AM PST when the Moon trines the North Node and quincunxes Juno=that says that what happens between 8 and 10 will have an affect on our destined direction, and that it may cause adjustments in the empowerment picture–just know that the events and choices of these hours will have a much larger effect than we may believe in the moment.

By 4 PM PST the Moon opposes Uranus, suggesting we won’t really be up for group endeavors, or that our own individuality urges may be something we’ll want to disown emotionally–and that says watch your reactions as being too insistent on having your own way may bring conduct you’ll be ashamed of (or at least regret) later. This sets the tone for the evening, until the Moon’s quincunx to Chiron and Neptune after 9–with any luck we’ll get some feedback on what the Virgo Moon has been trying to show us about that wound that’s been camouflaged until now. The Void begins at 10:36 PM PST–after that just sit back and get some rest, as the Moon’s entry into Libra brings it into the square with the Saturn/ Pluto dynamic duo–and we brace for another wallop of stress, likely through relationship. Moon enters Libra at 5:42 AM PST.

A big Thank You to all who’ve supported me and my work by purchasing the magazine–I truly appreciate it!
