William Merritt Chase ‘Hall At Shinnecock’ 1893 {{PD}}

What we’ve got going for us today are an enormous appreciation of the material world, of the senses and those things that comfort, gratify, and reassure (Venus enters Taurus), and we find both wisdom and practicality in seeing to our own and others’ ‘animal’ needs, and satisfaction in artisanal pursuits and products (Venus parallel Pallas). There is a kind of admiration for the physical world and the beauty of it that makes all of us connoisseurs–and that may have the effect of loosening the purse strings. ‘Smart’ and ‘beautiful’ seem to go together–and that can be an alluring, even irresistible, combination, so proceed with some awareness of your susceptibility, as the tendency may be to see one and assume the other. That may be minimized, though, by the focus on what we honor, what we dedicate ourselves to, on the home and the mate (Sun parallel Vesta).

Difficulties are all (thanks for your assistance, Merc retro!) due to our own misunderstanding of either the reality picture, or what actually needs to change (Mercury contra-parallel both Saturn and Pluto). What we think may be darker or more stringent than necessary, we may believe only permanent, extreme change will do, and we could temporarily stray entirely from our usual thinking and modes of communication. It’s not the time to let others know what we think, nor to address important issues, but it’s a great time to reform bad tendencies in thought processing and in getting our message across–we may find that a greater awareness of the wide world is needed, and that what we saw as powerful, effective, or efficient communication and thinking was something much less (Merc contra-parallel Saturn and Pluto)

Today’s word image is a bow and arrow. What are we to make of the Archer’s equipment? Saturn and Mars are both currently in Sagittarius, and both retrograde, suggesting frustration in efforts and accomplishments–and certainly, if we have natal placements in Sag, we are likely to feel a deficit that needs healing (through action, of course!) related to the nature of the body found there. For everyone, it may be a reality check in the sense of both what truly is, and the ways at least at present we are prevented from, or slowed at, doing anything about it.

Read about the current Mercury retrograde here, the Mars and Pluto retrogrades here, and enjoy your Friday! My books are available here, and include a free jpg of your natal chart–just include your complete data, using a word not numbers for the calendar month, in the order instructions to merchant or using the form on the Services page, and your chart will arrive with your book(s). Thank you!

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida 1908 {{PD}}

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida 1908 {{PD}}

It starts on the 27th as a low-grade hum, a vibrational dissonance that rattles our instincts and makes that sensation of suddenly dropping through space, just around our hearts; we revise and revise again our choices and actions, while at the same time finding the most odd things inspire us. It’s like that moment at the beach when the water recedes around your feet, drawing sand through your toes and underfoot in such a way that you think, ‘If this goes on just a little longer, it could pull me out, too.’ Try not to become disoriented as everything seems to move around you–and hang on to those ideas that come, they may be some of your most original (Black Moon Lilith contra-parallel Sedna, Uranus nov Neptune, Venus opp BML, Sun qnx Mars)

Mercury begins apparent retrograde motion at 10:20 AM Pacific time on the 28th, with first contact a trine from the Moon in Capricorn, quickly followed by a re-joining with Vesta, with both bodies in Taurus. Our minds may be so leaden, so concerned with the material, the senses, that effort at this point may be like punching our way out of a paper bag–hard to tell if we are as weak (or maybe that’s ineffective) as we feel, or whether that paper bag is much tougher than it appears. It may be this: every dark or hidden thing within us, every thing ignored or denied, every injustice we’ve witnessed and failed to address, is draining us, and Mercury turning around simply removes the mental safety net we’ve had in place; it takes away both our usual facility and the safeguards we are used to, exposing feeling incoherent in its amorphousness. We’ve used the mind to tamp this emotion or these facts down for so long they hold no shape when finally revealed.

Boris Artzybasheff {{PD}}

Boris Artzybasheff {{PD}}

Our mentality isn’t the only place we’ve been burying things; we see what’s been living under the stairs at this time, and we see the worth (or worthlessness) of our social connections. It’s as if we’ve used the power of our creativity and imaginative ability against ourselves, making us weak as kittens until we acknowledge (at the very least) all that we are avoiding. Until then we see a barrier between us and others, the quirk up of the flow of money and other assets, the social scene becomes awkward, and until we face things, this orientation makes us pick at our own wounds, though for the most part they’re not really a factor in current events. Face whatever you’ve been avoiding (convinced that it’s dark, but how do you know? You haven’t looked) and things get much, much easier–it’s that simple, and that hard, all at once (Saturn parallel Pluto, Venus sesq Jupiter, Sun semi-sq Chiron)

The word image for the 27th is: you cut open three fresh hot peppers, and feel your skin burn even though there’s no visible open wound. We don’t always know how close we are to being affected by something–those are the times we’re surprised by the sting. Pay attention–that pain is there to show you what to address, and where you’re truly vulnerable.

The word image for the 28th is: two monkeys share a snack in a shady tree. We all need someone to share and relax with, don’t we? If you don’t have your own favorite companion, someone you trust and feel good around, then why not?

At this time idealism seems practical, implementing the dream wise, and not so difficult, as we perceive the Collective, even the Universe, will offer support. What we need to understand, though, is that bringing the dream to reality will cost, though we can’t know ahead of time whether that will be actual money, assets, or love and relationships that will pay the toll. Somehow being so acutely aware of what we honor as the ultimate in life ends up disempowering us, likely through those costs we are unable to anticipate–or even just through the wear on our minds and hearts that comes from knowing we will pay (and have no choice in the matter) if we dare to reach for the Moon (Pallas enters Pisces, Venus semi-sq Neptune, Sun opp Juno)

Today’s image is a small pitcher, shaped like a cow, that holds cream. Watch for bovine imagery today, or for the quaint niceties (like a cream pitcher) from the past; either will hint at interesting moments, even turning points, when past and present show extraordinary connection, and may point to where we’re headed, without realizing it, in the now.

Lately I’ve seen and heard from a number of individuals who feel they, more than others, are under fantastic pressures far beyond what the rest of us currently feel; I would have to say, if you feel this way, please know that everyone else does, too. Some of us may be facing things in more dramatic (and so mostly external) forms, but we are all undergoing a kind of slow squeeze by the Universe. I am loathe to blame it on any particular aspect, but what pops out at me is the inexorable vise of Pluto and Saturn in relation to the South Node. Over the coming months they move toward perfecting a sextile and square, respectively, that give the feeling of an ever-tightening noose. Pluto’s is inviting, a ‘wouldn’t everything be better if we just eliminated/ walked away from/ discarded that?’ impulse, with a focus that continues to get smaller even as we find ourselves tossing what’s useless or outmoded overboard. Somehow, doing Pluto’s bidding doesn’t relieve the pressure–and it doesn’t help that, since the South Node is an extreme point, rather than a body, we may feel we can only grasp part of the equation, that we can only get a handle on some of what’s bothering us.

With Saturn, the matter is harsh and likely externally-located, taking the form of circumstances, rules, obligations, or even time itself, presenting an unavoidable restriction/ constriction/ conflict–and with both Pluto and Saturn, we are aware the whole time of now meeting the consequences of the past (South Node). Neither influence is escapable, but as I’m sure you’ve heard, none of us is getting out of here alive, so to realize that pressure, though it seems to come from demands and externals, is really an internally generated thing, a response that arises from a sense of helplessness in terms of the situation faced, is important: it helps us know that how we read those Plutonian and Saturnian circumstances rooted in the past will determine whether we process them as bumps in the road, easily managed or even laughed about, or as crushing obstacles and requirements that pinch the joy out of life.

We have the ‘juice’, the insight, and the foresight to make permanent and significant changes in life direction–the only questions are: will what we see so clearly ahead motivate us enough to act? and will we believe in ourselves and our need to change enough to take the necessary action? Though each individual will face something different, I hope the answers for all of us are, Yes (Perfecting today: Vesta trine NN, which is part of a loose Earth Grand Trine when Pluto is included, and the Sun sesq NN)

Let’s just call this a very good day, with chances to expand our world, opportunities to express our most unique characteristics, and new and original ways to gain. There are only two sticky spots: the potential for our own egos to wreak havoc in finances or relationships, and aesthetic difficulties (largely surrounding our ability to perceive beauty or worth) in creative endeavors; we are, just temporarily, ‘taste blind’. As always, go with your strengths (likely best enjoyed in matters of the Houses in the natal chart ruled by Jupiter and Uranus), and consider leaving the idea of making your Will felt in relationships or money matters, as well as expressing through aesthetic choices, for another time. (Jupiter parallel Uranus, and Venus parallel both of them, Venus sesq Mars and contra-parallel Neptune)

Today’s word image is a branch of lilac in full bloom, lying in the street gutter. Is there something wonderful, at its natural peak, in complete ‘flower’, that we’re not treating as well as we should? This could even be something about ourselves that we are disdainful of, that if we would just ‘pick it up’ (have respect for it, in some sense) could be quite beautiful.

Yoshitoshi Ogiku {{PD}}

Yoshitoshi Ogiku {{PD}}

What reigns today? A kind of confusion, where we deny ourselves empowerment due to our embrace of our own wounds, where we harm others (unconsciously, inadvertently) in our attempts to gain dominion over our own lives, where relationships seem haunted by anger, darkness, denial, and the array of tiny unspoken injustices accumulated over time, where resources carry a taint or a need to ignore what’s wrong in order to accept them, where things ignored bubble up, endangering Love or Money.

Don’t panic–these are whispers, shadows, a haint, the sense of something hanging in the air. Nothing directly harms or challenges, unless the behavior is driven by reaction to these nebulous, often troubling, influences. They are the disquieting bits that leak into interaction and choice as the filmiest of feelings. So what can we count on, what can we do about it?

We can, through the senses and through interaction, through knowing what we value and what’s dear, center on the core instincts, the place within where we just know what is right, or what is wrong, in any situation. It’s there for the knowing; we only need trust our sixth sense, our ancestral knowledge coded in the DNA, our internal ‘place’ that connects us to every other Being in the Universe. A vast and vague prescription, to be filled through use of instincts, through touch with the primal Beingness (Chiron contra-parallel Juno, Venus contra-parallel Black Moon Lilith and parallel Sedna)

On a different note, I received a question from a lovely long-time client last night, asking, essentially, if she was a psychopath. In case you haven’t guessed, she’s not, and I joked to her that the question I usually get along those lines is, ‘Is (my husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, sibling, boss) a psychopath?’ She said that was going to be her next question! But then I started to think about it; the implication was that an interaction with someone with whom she’s close had perhaps made her wonder about her level of compassion, even her sanity–and it wouldn’t be the first time that a partner or spouse has called their significant other ‘crazy’ in one form or another. No, what it made me think was that this person had created such doubt in my client, even outright accused her of psychopathy, and that this is often the ‘go to’ accusation for those who no longer control the relationship. Generations of men and women have faced such charges when they stand up for themselves to someone who wishes to control them; and for women in particular, the accusation of insanity is often one that follows a woman’s decision not to feel or think as the other commands. As females we are raised to show kindness, compassion, caring, and to not show them has been labeled dysfunctional; we are broken if we do not put others’ feelings and comfort and goals ahead of our own. To that I say, absolutely not. We are fine the way we are. And there is nothing wrong with walking away when someone wants you to make their well-being more important than your own.

Aspects Friday the 22nd look like a tribute to musical artist Prince, who died early on the 21st in his Minnesota studio at the age of 57 (and we may note, the 21st was also the date of death of one of the founders of the band Negativland, Richard Lyons, who was also 57; and, Prince’s protege and collaborator Vanity, died 15 February this year, also aged 57–I’m starting to wonder if 57 is the new 27 in the music world, the age when we lost Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Cobain, Winehouse, et al). Venus (beauty, Art) conjoins Uranus (the original, the unusual, style) and both novile Neptune (the creative, music), framing the way forward (Venus-Uranus quincunx the North Node), putting our attention on our wounds and clever ways to heal them (Sun novile Chiron).

This combination hands us an awareness of the need for the creative, for Art, for Beauty, for the unique, the original, strange, and fantastical, as we move forward; we see there is no future without an intensely inventive spirit, without a love of both beauty and others (the relationship function of Venus), and both the desire to create (which really drives all life) and the desire to express that creativity in terms that are very particularly our own (Uranus). To me that sounds exactly like Prince’s life mission, one that in the eyes of many he fulfilled exceptionally well.

If we look at Prince’s chart (7 June 1958 6:19 PM Minneapolis MN USA) we see both the natal strains that were lifelong (for instance, a Whole Sign 8th House Gemini Sun, the position emphasizing the individual commitment to others, as well as the inevitable toll that commitment can take, and a 29 degree Pluto conjoined the Midheaven and ruling the 1st of the Self, suggesting serious strain through the career and public image to the personality and so too to the body itself).

Data via Astrodatabank

Data via Astrodatabank

When we look at the transits for the 21st, we note the transiting Sun just past contact to the natal South Node (bringing the individual attention to the past, perhaps to that point of what we are before birth–so, returning to one’s origins), and the way the current Sun-Earth axis is aligned his natal 1st House Neptune to the degree (conjoined by Earth, opposed by the Sun). According to The Atlantic, in a 1985 interview Prince stated, “There’s not a person around who can stay awake as long as I can. Music is what keeps me awake,” which is an interesting statement coming from one whose North Node and Neptune were fused in the 1st, a symbol of the creative, forward-looking consciousness he lived.

Transiting Saturn was just beginning to move off (in retrograde) Prince’s natal 2nd House Earth, and with the symbol of both time and ‘The End’ opposing his Sun, he was probably experiencing excessive debilitation; the weakness and exhaustion we feel when the transiting Sun-Earth is flipped from our natal one was likely mimicked and exaggerated a thousand times by Saturn’s contact to the material (Earth) and ‘draining’ of the opposing Sun.

Transiting Jupiter, showing his credentials as the harbinger of life’s longest journey, had already squared Prince’s Sun twice and is scheduled to square it again; once more, the sense is one of strain, and t Jupiter is opposed t Neptune, placing Prince’s natal Sun and Vesta as the arm of a T-square. What’s most vital to him (the Sun) and sacred to him (Vesta) is being strained and pressured by a temporary situation that pits the creative, music, against the social order, the need to reach out and share the creation. It’s no secret Prince fought long battles with record companies, a situation that lasted for years and made for the most frustrating environment imaginable for an artist.

And, the transiting Moon hours before Prince’s death passed over his 12th House Jupiter, possibly triggering that longest journey, in one form leaving the Collective but joining it in another.

The Full Moon 21 April 2016 Learning What’s Wise

'Night Scene' Carl Rudolph Krafft (1884 - 1938) {{PD}}

‘Night Scene’ Carl Rudolph Krafft (1884 – 1938) {{PD}}

Leading up to the Full Moon on the 20th we have only the Sun sesquiquadrate Saturn and novile the South Node perfecting. This may turn our attention to everything within the reality picture that needs to be changed or attended to, especially things that have been waiting for correction or modification for some time. Mistakes of the past may loom large; take this as a way to inform the present, to keep from losing sight of the need for order and restraint, for a plan; this also emphasizes how great an impact we can have on our physical world (Saturn).

The Full Moon is on the 21st at 10:22 PM Pacific time, and falls at 2 Scorpio 30 in out-of-sign trine to a 29 degree Pallas–and we may be digging deep, wondering how smart our choices are; they seem to be made under stress, especially under the pressure or scrutiny of the group (Pallas in Aquarius)–and with the Lunar event, we are left with the results of those choices.

Or, are we forced by the Full Moon events to make split-second or difficult choices? Again, we are unsure how wise what we are doing really is. Our lack of certainty is echoed by the FM’s quincunx to Ceres; this suggests we question our own authority, our ability to exert our power or reach, and our ability to negotiate for our own well-being and for the protection of those for whom we are responsible. We feel strong, but aren’t sure of ourselves–and that takes a mental toll, making us question what we would otherwise know to be wise or practical.

The Full Moon Sabian is, ‘A House-Raising Party In A Small Village Enlists The Neighbors’ Cooperation’ This implies that the Full Moon event may show us the necessity of cooperation. Everyone converges on a single spot, in order to build something; it’s constructive activity, both literally and in spirit, and is the main thrust of the Full Moon message: that despite our feelings of uncertainty, and our fears that we are being unwise or impractical in our choices, the way forward is to unite. This offers not just the aid of others, but a kind of balance in reflection: we can bounce our choices off others in order to gauge whether we are being reasonable or not. Together, whether with a partner or a whole village, we can do the positive and appropriate thing.

Full Moon in Scorpio April 2016

For a Full Moon we always look at the Sun Sabian, which is, ‘Natural Steps Lead To A Lawn Of Clover In Bloom’ We have reached this point naturally; the Full Moon brings, not an anomaly, but the predictable result of our past direction. Now we discover the nature of those past choices, and what they produced (the lawn of clover in bloom).

Non-Lunar influences for the day mostly involve the mentality and a few caveats: don’t take restrictions on your personal reach as deliberately hurtful; don’t look to money or partners to make you powerful; and keep thinking aligned with reality, positive and productive in nature, and focused on the future (Chiron sesq Juno, Venus contra-parallel Ceres, Merc contra-parallel Saturn and Pluto and trine the NN)

Johann Friedrich Anthing {{PD}}

Johann Friedrich Anthing {{PD}}

The image up to the Full Moon is a small tree, just transplanted, that is washed out of the ground by a sudden rainstorm. Sometimes things with a great deal of promise are cut short by unfortunate circumstances. The best approach is to mourn the lost potential, and to accept that sometimes no matter how well we prepare, the situation just doesn’t offer what’s needed to thrive. Let go of the regret you feel about some loss that was actually unavoidable, but which you may still believe you could’ve prevented.

Today it’s all about our ambitions, how they can be realized, and what they can get us, whether we are aware of this focus or not. We are attuned to what enhances our personal power situation, and without even thinking about it, we are likely to approach everything in ways that maximize our position and our effectiveness. This is great, except for the way relationships, values, and assets are all in some form of opposition to this, so that pushing so heavily for ambition fulfillment will almost certainly destroy (or transform significantly) our connections and those things that reward us. How to deal? Stay awake, stay aware, and be mindful of what really matters, having your way in the moment, or being loving? Though they’re not automatically mutually exclusive, to consciously take a loving stance will prevent damage–and that’s probably our best defense, right now (Perfecting today: Ceres parallel Zeus, Venus opp Zeus and sq Pluto)

Today’s word image is a small metal toy boat, bent and dented, lying in the middle of a (very) dry, sunny street. The saddest images are often those where something is in the wrong place, inappropriate for its situation or surroundings, and here we have an item meant for fun and a water environment stranded and abandoned–and yet to find a symbol of transport in the street has a kind of ironic ring to it, a sense that it was dropped not because it couldn’t float, but because where the person holding it found themselves (the street) was an inappropriate form for the boat. Look around you, and see if there isn’t some place in your life where you have abandoned something that might get you somewhere, if you’d only put it in its rightful place.

‘Lake McArthur, Yoho Park’ – James MacDonald 1924 {{PD}}

We’re mostly consumed with adjusting to the turnaround of Mars and Pluto, but there are two other influences today, a trine of Venus to Saturn, and a sesquiquadrate of the Sun to Jupiter. Each of these suggest some sort of brakes on bounty, a holding back or reality check on more or better–and this judgmental viewpoint may leak into relationships, especially if we are inclined to place responsibility for containment on externals (that is, if we are prone to do whatever we want, expecting the world or others to exercise discipline for us). We can wind up with some severe limits placed on our money or love; or, we can adopt those restrictive energies ourselves, and create an atmosphere that says ‘No’ preemptively to what could and should be a very good (though consuming) thing.

But, we may also have the grace to see the ways in which we can benefit by showing restraint, especially in relationships or with money, and our attention can be directed to what’s overdone, exaggerated, or what’s prevalent socially–and we can then make our own choices as to how to handle it. It’s a good day, but especially so if we’re willing to exercise optimism, give attention to detail as well as the big picture, and give both conscience and consciousness a workout.
