New Moon in Virgo 17 September 2020 A Soul Critique

Honestly, this doesn’t look too bad–which may just go to show that hell is a personal, internal creation. ‘A Soul in Hell’ By Evelyn De Morgan 1902 {{PD}}

The New Moon perfects at 4:00 AM PDT at 25 Virgo–those are some nice round numbers, aren’t they? (And as an aside, don’t read anything into that–numbers are a human-created system–there’s no mystical meaning in neither having minutes.) The NM noviles Vesta, right away telling us that what begins at this time is something that carries a spark of genius, in terms of the way it can instigate important commitments, can dedicate our energies to what really matters to us, and can bring the spiritual into interactions. What is birthed right now matters, to the Soul, to the psyche, and to the manifestations of these in the life, as they arise from our own accounting and critique (Virgo) of who we are (the Sun) and how we feel (the Moon).

The New Moon, which is of course conjoined the Sun and opposed the Earth, also happens to square the Nodal axis. The Nodes are not bodies but ‘markers’, in a sense, of the points at any one time when the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic, and so can be thought of as energetic placeholders, adding depth to analysis of the Moon’s situation at any particular point, and indicating the direction of a general energy stream moving from South Node to North. Since this Grand Cross consists of the event bodies (New Moon-Sun), one that’s always linked to the Sun anyway (the ever-opposing Earth), and these extremity markers (the Nodes), no one could be faulted for thinking this isn’t truly relevant to the event–but it is, simply because this likely signals the kind of ongoing tension typical to a GC that is kicked off by the New Moon event. That is, what starts at the NM simultaneously brings forward questions of identity and role (the Sun), the past (South Node), and the direction we’re headed in life (North Node), and this happens as a logical matter of course, and again marking the depth of meaning behind the NM itself and giving events the sense that decisions and choices must be made.

The New Moon trines Pluto and is in close trine to Saturn, suggesting just how easily profound change may occur, particularly in ways that change the material reality or that create structure or limit restraints. Further, Sedna could be considered to fill in a loose Earth Grand Trine with Saturn, indicating that either our instincts and intuitive faculties, or those matters we carry in our ‘blind spot’, become instrumental in events. Do we have a choice here as to whether we get a leg up with accurate instinctual perceptions or suffer at the hands of matters we just aren’t conscious of? No, probably not, though we can do our best to stay open to change, and so to Truth–a willingness to see and know may be our most important asset.

The New Moon in Virgo forms quincunxes to the Black Moon Lilith point and to Mars, the latter of which is still stationary in Aries, poised to break backward in apparent motion. The light dawning with the New Moon may slowly begin to illuminate what we need to do about matters we’ve ignored or denied–but whether that comes as a flash of knowledge all at once, or seeps in over the coming days, can’t be known, and considering that Mars is technically already retrograde, may imply that we don’t do anything, but instead learn what must be done, and then reserve action for a later date.

The NM also makes a sesquiquadrate to Uranus. This points out to us the need to ‘make peace’ with our own uniqueness. Too often we seek to subdue, distort for acceptability’s sake, or otherwise hide what is most true to ourselves, partly out of fear: to be known and seen is to be vulnerable, and partly out of a desire to be accepted. But, this Moon event will help us see, even if it’s only in some small way, how embracing a unique part of ourselves will make us truer to who we are at a Soul level. Special note: if you have something 8 and 12 degrees Aquarius, then that natal placement fills in the base of a Fist of God with Uranus and New Moon as apex. The suggestion is that Moon events might come directly from a clash between your most unusual qualities and the natal energy as they try to ‘get along’. For you the ‘recipe’ for making the most of New Moon events very firmly rests in the need to accept something you up until now may have seen as too ‘out there’ to be incorporated as a part of the identity–but now you must find a way.

The Sabian symbol for the New Moon is, ‘A Flag At Half-Mast In Front Of A Public Building’. The editor in me wants to correct that to say ‘half-staff’ as half-mast is only shipboard–and then I wonder, is that ‘mistake’ part of the message itself? Is it meant to convey that the mourning of loss and show of respect shown by lowering a flag is actually, in some strange way, misplaced? Maybe it draws our attention to an area we have been mourning, something that brings us sadness, only to point out to us that we are sad either about the ‘wrong’ component of the situation, or that we are misunderstanding our own mourning, either the need to or the need not to (which in some circles could be seen as unacceptable and so punished). In any case, this sadness has a public component, a public ‘face’, so that we may be challenged to examine whether what we are told we should be mourning really matters to us, or whether we are mourning something else entirely in private, participating in group sadness as a way to find ‘cover’ for our real feelings. Whatever happens at the New Moon, it may involve the loss of a feeling state (real or pretend) that moves us by its subtraction closer to living a most genuine life.

Good Day To . . . 16 September 2020 A Personal Reckoning

‘In der Gartenlaube’ By Arnold Böcklin 1891 {{PD}}

The 16th Is A Good Day To . . . watch what you communicate to those who nurture you, care for you, have some form of control over you, as well as be cognizant of what ‘message’ you’re sending to Nature/ the Universe itself (Mercury sesquiquadrate Ceres). You’re asked in some way to make a statement about who you are and what path you think you’re taking, vs. what path you really are taking. It’s a very personal reckoning (which means others may not even know it’s happening, and if you’re not tuned in, neither will you–and of course, this will largely be invisible to you within others’ experiences, as well). You’re asked to consider critically, to take accounting of (Sun in Virgo) what you think (North Node in Gemini) and measure it against what the facts truly are (South Node in Sagittarius, all three components in a T-square). Do it willingly, for best results; otherwise the Universe may force consideration of identity and life direction–and that would only add unneeded pressure.

Remember, we’re in the Dark of the Moon period–inner work and contemplation will actually serve to make more happen than will externally-focused efforts.

Good Day To . . . 15 September 2020 Inclined to be Wild

The 15th Is A Good Day To . . . question our motives and choices. Not in a way that says that they’re wrong or bad, but instead in a way that pauses to ask: is that a choice that aligns with my values? is that an original idea, or one that comes from a desire to get attention simply by disrupting? am I justifiably rebelling, or just trying to mess it up for someone else? is that an elevated idea, or merely an angry one, confusing righteousness with integrity? You get my drift–we may endanger our own assets and relationships out of an inclination toward the wild, erratic, or from a pure wish to shock–and that kind of impulse suggests that what we really need is some attention. Yes, that’s a genuine need (in spite of how so many of us were told to sit quietly in the corner, that to want to show what we can do, and be appreciated for it, was selfish–I’m here to tell you it’s not). Consistently, the inclination to disrupt arises from repressed or denied need for authentic energy expression–instead we are likely to have been told only certain ways of expressing are acceptable coming from us–and live by someone else’s standards for too long, and it can all get explosive. Do your best to recognize, stop, and then channel those hair-up-the-you-know-what feelings into something positive you actually want to be responsible for.

Good Day To . . . 14 September 2020 A Drop of Courage

‘Destiny’ By John William Waterhouse 1900 {{PD}}

The 14th Is A Good Day To . . . let go of the past! Especially those parts that distorted our Self-image, that have kept us (so far) from being as closely connected to manifesting our Soul’s intents as we’d like. Sometimes we hide from ourselves, not really wanting to see the path we were born to take–and I’m not saying that there are only one right set of steps for each individual, I’m saying that there’s an overall aim we carry within, one that makes the absolute most of who we are–and that it’s not unusual for the awesomeness of that purpose (the spiritual intensity of it, that is!) to unconsciously overwhelm us, prompting a kind of hide-and-seek with our own destiny. That’s no way to spend your life energy, your potential, your days.

Though our minds might try to sabotage us, just a little (skipping away too easily from matters we have chosen to ignore or deny), today we actually have the capacity to see exactly what needs to change (or needs to be stripped away entirely) to make us more genuine versions of ourselves–all it takes is a willingness to listen to our instincts, and a wee drop of courage.

Good Day To . . . 13 September 2020 Empowerment Glitches

‘Waiting’ By Edgar Degas 1882 {{PD}}

The 13th Is A Good Day To . . . recognize that much as we might like to exercise our prerogatives and make our wishes felt over our own territory, it’s just not to be. We don’t see the situation clearly, so that what seems like reasonable effort or measures to take to us is, somehow, way off base–and if we do insist on going forward, we likely find the results are not at all what we intended them to be. Glitches and hold-ups signal the need to step back from pursuit of the current goal, no matter how inconsequential that goal seems; judgment is off, and inspecting too-closely relationships or finances simply amplifies hurt, feelings of inadequacy, and/ or resentments, putting us on a destructive path. Take refuge in the creative or the spiritual, and wait for more supportive influences to make your Will felt.

Good Day To . . . 12 September 2020 Big Opportunity–Jupiter Direct

‘Jupiter’ By Hans Thoma {{PD}}

The 12th Is A Good Day To . . . see that the powers-that-be are offering you something good–it might take a little effort, a little hard work, but you’re being dealt into the game–and to refuse to play, for whatever reason, will be like shooting yourself in the foot–you can blame it on someone else, but you picked up the gun and pulled the trigger. It’s a day when you really don’t want any of the typical excuses we as individuals use to avoid engagement with others, that stop us uncritically applying ourselves, or that make us feel righteous in withdrawing from the social expectations or larger public arena, from ruining what could be a genuine and highly fruitful opportunity. We have to be ready to accept new ideas into our thought-bubble, to adapt to fresh information or surprises, to proactively shape the aftermath of an accident or revelation to make the most of it–but doing so will benefit us in large and largely unanticipated ways.

So much of this is connected to Jupiter’s turnaround in Capricorn, freeing up the generous impulses of those empowered by the status quo, benefiting those who follow the rules (or those who previously balked at them, and now find the rules are changing in their favor). The first aspect Jupiter will move forward to form is a sextile to Neptune, signaling that it’s the season for creative endeavor, especially when that’s centered in hard work and serious effort, but also that it may be easy to succumb to the fabled ‘alternative facts’ if we aren’t committed to reality in an unbiased way.

Good Day To . . . 11 September 2020 Negotiating for Power

Tags

‘Summer Night’ By Eilif Peterssen 1886 {{PD}}

The 11th Is A Good Day To . . . use relationships with those in power to reach your own power ends. Sounds ruthless, doesn’t it? What we’re really talking about is strategically leveraging relationships in a way (and this is really important) that is respectful of both positions and also doesn’t begrudge the other something they can use, as well. Too often we go into negotiations with someone we see as having superior power believing that we deserve something, but they don’t deserve anything, because we judge them to already have ‘more’. We forget that to get others to share their power to benefit us there must be something positive (even if it’s just a good feeling at doing the ‘right’ thing) in it for the other party–and that acknowledging the worthiness of others (even when we don’t agree with it, or don’t agree that they should have what they have) is basic to seeing everyone as worthy–it’s our belief in judgment, in thinking we get to make the call, that poisons many power related interactions.

We’re aided today in a number of ways; here are the potential boosts and cautions: we may be driven by wounds we’ve hidden (even from ourselves) and by those matters that hurt but that we are in denial of–luckily, there’s a real-world mechanism that may throw up barriers to us proceeding that can save us from ourselves–so the moral is, if something stops us from going forward, we’re being rescued from a move based on unsound motivations; we’re clear-eyed today, but that may not allow crisp mental reasoning–instead, try accessing Truths through vetting circumstances against ideals, by exercising the imagination, and by tapping into your own creativity, as well as enjoying creative manifestations from others.

Good Day To . . . 10 September 2020 A Better Tomorrow

The 10th Is A Good Day To . . . let go of two things: illusions you carry about Love or Money, and thinking that arises from a wounded perspective. Both need to be done in service to a better tomorrow–the implication being that not doing one or both may result in a true relationship or financial crisis, or a line of reasoning that prompts some really poor decisions. How best to do this? Some hints to get you started: be as honest with yourself as possible about what’s actually gone down in the past, and about what you really want in your future–telling yourself tales about these, though soothing now, will put you in a bad spot in the weeks and months to come; be sensitive to others, especially if that’s not your usual style–the Moon in Cancer squaring Mercury in Libra today asks that you think about others’ feelings as much as your own, but communications must be clear and honest, without a hint of passive-aggression or ulterior, manipulative intent; and note that Merc is currently opposed Chiron and in about two days will quincunx Uranus, suggesting that communications that are driven by hurt or meant to wound will generate shocking or surprising events or accidents that will then require ‘clean-up’–so do your best to face relationships and financial matters head-on, and keep communications clear, clean, and rooted in the Truth.

Good Day To . . . 9 September 2020 Mars Retrograde: Inside the Vehicle

Tags

Alexandre Louis – Album de photo de Marcel Louis 1910 {{PD}}

The 9th Is A Good Day To . . . keep your limbs and head inside the car! Were you ever driving along on a road trip that seemed to last forever, driving, driving, and idly put your hand out the window to watch it caught and buffeted by the wind, and had an adult (for you were only a child, just trying to stay occupied) yell at you, ‘Get your arms inside this car! Do you want them cut off as we pass that truck?!’ That’s this Mars retro in a nutshell: the perpetual threat of sudden limb (or is it head?) loss, over re-visiting recent issues surrounding temper, aggression, assertion, recent choices or actions, or Will. The vehicle is ourselves, and Mars is the fuel, deploying it the issue. And of course, losing your Aries-ruled noggin can have two forms: one is if others come at us and ‘take our heads off’ over something, and the other is if we lose control of ourselves. Both are distinct possibilities.

I like to look at the point when a body officially turns retrograde, as it seems to give us a snapshot of what the course of the retro promises (particularly what the early part holds in store). This happens at 3:23 PM PDT of the 9th at 28 Aries 08, but we’ve probably already gotten a preview as Mars slowed to a crawl then standstill in recent days. Late in Aries, his own sign, Mars is likely already beginning to chafe without the anticipated retro; the stress of reaching the end of the window for perfect personal expression, the kind that recognizes no boundaries and no need for cooperation or thought of others, and having that window shut (sending Mars into Taurus, a realm where Will matters not nearly so much as material reality and security) would have in any case have been causing excessive unrest, especially if one is feeling that the ‘I Am’ statements or expression of the Will hasn’t been as complete or successful as hoped. So, there would be a bit of an issue anyway, and along comes apparent retro status to offer the dissatisfied and over-anxious a chance to re-visit choices and efforts–which situation inevitably adds its own stress, as individuals feel the pressure of just one more chance to get ‘it’ right.

Mars is itself Void at this point, as it would make no other aspects (though we do observe that the Moon would soon sextile it, it matters not, as the Moon, too, would be Void by then). Void status adds a huge amount of stress as it signals energy in stasis, a status doubly difficult for a Self-starter like Mars. The implication is that while traversing the sign a Void body did all it could in that sign–and now must wait for a new ‘style’ (the next sign) to once again find expression. Mars, then, begins his retro highly frustrated–and looking for outlets.

The first aspect made by the retrograde body seems to ‘set the tone’ for the retro period. Here it’s an opposition to Juno in Libra that suggests empowerment within partnership or cooperative arrangements will face a climax or crisis point, when who has the ‘right’ (a very Aries word!) to do what within the situation is sorted out. Straightforward enough, yes? Then we see a quincunx to the Sun on the 19th, suggesting what’s been revealed so far during the retro requires adjustment to what we pay attention to, matters of identity, or both. Right after the Sun moves into Libra (relationships are great! isn’t everything pretty? don’t we all get along wonderfully!?) and less than a week after the quincunx Mars conjoins the Black Moon Lilith point, suggesting that our optimism about working it all out with others may have been overly rosy, premature, or just plain wishful thinking.

But it’s the next thing, a Cardinal T-square with Mars-BML opposed Mercury and all square Saturn in Capricorn, that brings it all home. Those things about our choices or actions that we’ve ignored, been in denial about, or that have been perpetrated out of suppressed rage (or that have stirred rage in others) is communicated from without (probably directly from others with whom we are in relationships or cooperative arrangements–Merc in Libra), and it makes for real-world conflict (especially with authorities or established entities that are seen as ‘legitimate’ or supported by the status quo), crises over boundaries, restrictions, or rules, or bottom-line practicalities we can’t get around that may generate ‘next steps’ and/ or arise from our actions and others’ reactions to them.

So, hands, arms, and especially heads inside the car; know that your ‘drive’, whether literal or figurative, needs special care and attention, particularly when it comes to interaction and responsibilities shared with others. Being honest with ourselves about our own and others’ prerogatives, territory, and motivations will go a long way toward keeping us safely on the road, avoiding any fiery, temper-induced upsets.

If it’s any consolation, on the 9th the Sun also trines Jupiter=reach out, take opportunities, be optimistic, learn from what comes at you, and enjoy the day. We’ll have plenty of others that will be not-so-smooth, so rest and celebrate while and what you can.

The 8th Is A Good Day To . . . know that destiny is empowerment, and empowerment is destiny. At first glance, I admit, that sounds like nonsense, but the flow of energy today is such that we act based on many accumulated choices that came before, and in acting we place another brick into the Path forward leading to our destiny. We act building on previous actions (and so have limited, in a sense, what we are currently empowered to do), which led us to where we are now, and we choose again based on that empowerment level, creating our next step, which has further implications for empowerment in the future. Today, more directly than on most days, we are quite literally laying the groundwork for our future. The best part is that we’re especially clear-eyed right now, able to see fantasy or bullsh*t for what it is, and so can rather easily avoid it in making our choice.
