Remember that trine between the Sun and Black Moon Lilith we talked about yesterday? For a few hours on the 12th it becomes a Fire Grand Trine as the Moon moves into the last decan of Aries (later AM Pacific)–and this happens just after the Moon forms a T-square by opposition to Jupiter and square to Pluto. The energy is big, sweeping, serious, though it doesn’t feel heavy, except in the way we see (or perhaps I should say ‘perceive’, as not everything will be on the surface or immediately identifiable) it shuffling the chess pieces on our board. We get to the end of the day with things considerably different, arranged in a way we didn’t anticipate, as at least some of what happens involves having to attend to (and so acknowledge feelings about) those things we’d rather ignore or deny. Know that there’s liberation to be found in dealing with things, and be aware that, particularly right now, we must be willing to allow others the autonomy to make their own decisions, no matter what we believe.

Mercury also begins apparent retrograde in Virgo, needing to backtrack only 7 minutes to perfect a trine to Pallas. This suggests that at least part of the meaning of this retro period will involve critical discernment (Virgo) of what’s wise, what’s practical, what skills are needed (Pallas). This sets the tone for the entire period; make sure that what you review and re-do brings answers that address those Pallas questions.

Today’s word image is a bowling ball floating on the water. Impossible, right? We may encounter something just as unlikely today–but in this case, accept what you see, but verify how it’s done, even though that takes the ‘magic’ out of it, as you’ll be much better off knowing the ‘why and how’ behind it.

Anticipation may be the theme on the 13th. We see the Sun trining a retrograde Saturn, Vesta and Neptune moving toward opposition, Mars heading toward a quincunx to Pluto and sextiles to Zeus and Jupiter, and there are a coupe of close semi-sextiles that link energies through a mild tension: Mars-Venus, and Chiron-Uranus, which we can read as, ‘man-woman/ animus/ anima’ and ‘sudden hurt or healing, wounding accident, spontaneous display of unique skills’. We may spend the day in a state akin to waiting, but not knowing just what we’re waiting for. The Moon in Taurus counsels us to relax and enjoy creature comforts–that’ll be my goal, and should be yours, too.

Today’s word image is: a sea serpent pokes his head up out of a choppy lake. Hmmm. Again with an image that may or may not be a reality. And again, accept that you saw it, but don’t accept anyone else’s definition of what it actually is.

Just a Little AstroEssence 11 August 2017 Jupiterian Possibility

Boris Kustodiev – ‘Merchant’s Wife at Tea’ 1917 {{PD}}

You know what’s drawing my attention today? Sun trine Black Moon Lilith, with Jupiter at the midpoint. That lights up what’s being ignored, denied, or what enrages us, and shows us the opportunities for more (good or bad), for expansion, for plenty, for a certain kind of freedom that might come from dealing with what we’ve so far avoided. With the Sun recently passed over Mars, we may feel we’ve already addressed this (probably those matters of the House wherein Leo is contained), but the reality is we’ve not yet taken the right (or the most effective) action. So, as the Moon trines Mars from assertive Aries (late PM Pacific time) we may respond to the intuitive or emotional push that tells us we can get ourselves a little bit o’ that Jupiterian possibility, too.

Today’s word image is: You, tasting a food you’ve never tried. Trying a new food is good, but let’s take this image in a broader context: see it as taking in something new. That can be eating something, but also hearing something, doing something, learning something, visiting somewhere, trying an activity–whatever might give you a ‘taste’ of what you’ve never had before.

Enjoy your weekend eve!

New Moon in Aries 27 March 2017 Choosing the ‘I Am’

Who needs New Moon-light, when you’ve got such splooshy stars? Edvard Munch – ‘Starry Night’ (1922–24) {{PD}}

The New Moon occurs at 7:57 PM PDT at 7 Aries 37 of the 27th, and makes only a few contacts: a very wide (for a New Moon) conjunction to retrograde Venus, which is in fast retreat; a wide trine to Black Moon Lilith; a square to Hygeia; and we should note, though it’s technically unrelated to the NM, that Pallas is at 29 Pisces, suggesting a state of crisis, and likely one that involves delusions, spiritual matters, or one’s place in the Collective in a ‘all the Universe vs. me’ scenario, all this mattering as it applies to what’s smart, what’s wise, what’s practical.

A New Moon in Aries asks, ‘What will you do?’ or ‘What will you be?’; that is, ‘Who are you?’, bringing up issues of role, identity, and personal initiative. In this instance, the NM may give us the feeling that if we don’t act, or choose, we may lose Love or Money. We’re given aid by the way we have access, one way or another, to matters that have been hidden, denied, or ignored by ourselves or others; suddenly having the New Moon impetus to deal with what’s been avoided or put aside may reveal resources we didn’t know we had, may shape the landscape or offer justice, especially within one-to-one relationships, and may offer choices or the opportunity to act that restores balance, perhaps unexpectedly.

But what happens when that Universe balancing chance to right a wrong or attend to the ignored is influenced by an anxious sense of inner knowing, one that feels something must be done? Our health, mental, emotional, spiritual, physical, suffers, probably because our attention is on the opportunity and spurred by our own anxiety, our wish to ‘be smart’ about the whole thing. Perhaps the Sabian can add something illuminating.

Portrait of Abigael Bromfield Rogers (1753-1791), step-niece of the artist. John Singleton Copley 1783 {{PD}}

‘A Large Woman’s Hat With Streamers Blown By An East Wind’. Hmm. A hat is a statement, one that covers our ‘thoughts’ and signals who we are, maybe even telling others of our role, function, or status. We could dissect the heck out of this, offering all kinds of minute meanings for each element, but I think that might defeat the point: the New Moon in Aries might be much like choosing a hat. In essence, we are donning an identity with the New Moon in Aries, asserting who we are–it’s no more complicated than that.

The AstroEssence: The Moon’s left idealizing, drifting, confusing Pisces, and moves through clear, first-person point-of-view Aries–and now our feelings, and our thrust toward the future, condense and take shape. We know just what kind of future we want to create, and we have a precise idea of how to empower ourselves, and of where real-world power (that is, the power that lies externally, and that can affect more than just ourselves) lies. Action, we realize, is itself power, as is choice, no matter how seemingly minor, and this fuels pursuit of ambitions even as it draws our attention to those matters that should no longer be ignored or denied, or toward those subjects that enrage us–all are in prime space not just to pull our notice, but to enable our efforts to bring equity and balance. It may seem like we’re just putting out the worst fires at this point, but in reality we are creating the future–and careful adherence to ‘the rules’, physics, the dictates of authority (even as we work to change them), and to what’s established or solidly reliable, all facilitate gain, with positive potential for diplomatic solutions, sudden insights, the creation of new and lasting relationships, and profit of all kinds. If we’re awake, this period shows us where we actually want to go–and illuminates the way–the rest is up to us (Uranus parallel NN, Mars sxt Juno and parallel Pluto, Venus enters Capricorn and nov Black Moon Lilith, Mercury semi-sq Juno and nov Zeus, Sun conj BML)

Today’s word image is this: a false wall in an old house is removed; beneath this, on the original wall, is a mural, a master artist’s piece. Renovation and re-styling, when done carefully, is a good thing, but did you long ago cover up something, walk away from something, repudiate or ignore something, that is actually one of your most important qualities, possessions, skills, talents, traits, or attitudes? Whatever it is, it’s been covered with something ordinary, in the name of ‘updating’–tear down the false barrier, and see what you’ve got.

Just such a scenario as that for our word image happened 15 years ago, in a renovation in Tribeca, NYC-the artist was Keith Haring. Photo shows his work in public space in Barcelona. Pic By Alberto-g-rovi - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=32189340

For those born with the Sun at 19 Scorpio: Your deepest, darkest secrets, those things you’ve pushed down or denied, need to come to light this coming year, through to your next birthday–if they don’t you run the risk of having unconscious forces take over, and that allows them to orchestrate circumstances you just can’t ignore. Never fear, though: you have the perfect mindset to handle these matters, and, though there will be a few surprises (and those aren’t necessarily bad), you may get assistance from established relationships or resources, and from forward thinking groups or your own original ideas–and these can lead to much bigger rewards in the future. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

By Émile Friant - {{PD}}

‘The Boating Party’ or ‘Reunion of the Meurthe Boating Party’, by Émile Friant – {{PD}}

The Lunar Essence: With the Full Moon in Aries at 23 Aries 14 occurring at 9:23 PM Pacific daylight time, we see the threesome of Earth-Moon-Uranus in a less than one degree span opposed the Libra Sun, which is sesquiquadrate Neptune. The Full Moon itself of course forms a semi-square to Neptune, and is as stated conjoined Uranus and widely conjoined Ceres, the latter of which sits at 29 degrees of the Moon’s sign, adding stress through the actions of Nature or authorities. The Full Moon is also quincunx Juno, and makes a wide square to Vesta, which we should count as the swift-moving Moon races toward, rather than away from, aspect completion, with this square creating a T-square with the Sun/ Earth-Moon-Uranus axis (but even more closely aspecting Ceres, as both Vesta and Ceres sit at 29 degrees), adding even more stress. It’s notable, too, that this Sun is also parallel both Juno and Neptune, suggesting that just observing, just seeing (the light of the Sun) can empower and make the dream, whatever that may be for the individual, a very realistic possibility.

full-moon-in-aries-october-2016So what do we get from this Full Moon? Why stress, of course! But from what source? We reach a peak of involvement with, rejection of, rebellion from, or original and innovative cooperation with ‘the group’, and this brings us to a point of ‘energy crisis’ in terms of our own power and authority, our priorities and those things we honor, and with how closely the results align with what we imagine is ideal, as well as how we feel about this resulting real-world arrangement. It’s a point of radical enlightenment, as we see quite clearly the personal power situation and the role we can play in the larger scenario, and these are revealed within the microcosm of a single interactive situation; we assess this real-life situation, and see beyond it (into the Uranian future, if you will) to what larger role we can play, title we can claim, or area where we can accomplish.

There are both stresses that are not under our conscious control, such as Mother Nature, exerting herself through things like weather and our own biology, and stresses within areas where we have exerted ourselves, tried to gain empowerment or authority, tried to commit to those matters that are most important to us. The Vestal energies of dedication, commitment, and the sacred must resolve against those Ceres energies of power expression, authority, and knowing and controlling our ‘domain’, and this is done through Ceres’ own mechanism of negotiation, an internal discussion that happens within the individual psyche that is acted out in real-world arenas. We see what adjustments, compromises, and alterations are required for ‘the dream’ to become reality, with the light of the Full Moon showing us exactly where and how we are empowered to make it happen.

Wiosna w Gościeradzu (Spring in Gościeradz)  by Leon Wyczółkowski {{PD}}

Wiosna w Gościeradzu (Spring in Gościeradz) by Leon Wyczółkowski {{PD}}

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘Blown Inward By The Wind, The Curtains Of An Open Window Take The Shape Of A Cornucopia’. The FM event ‘opens a window’ that is either a time period of opportunity, or an ability to both see our goals clearly, and to know what the ‘fruits’ of our current direction will actually be, the latter allowing us to make needed adjustments to our actions and choices. The FM offers either feedback that illuminates our own effectiveness and true course, or the chance to make things happen, if we’ll only take the steps, or modify our path, a chance to affect things that didn’t exist until now.

'Butterflies', Wilhelm von Kaulbach, c1860 {{PD}}

‘Butterflies’, Wilhelm von Kaulbach, c1860 {{PD}}

We always look at the Sun for a Full Moon, as the source of the Full Moon’s light. ‘A Butterfly With A Third Wing On Its Left Side’ suggests nothing so much as fulfillment; that is, the result of what has incubated and emerged, now fully ready, developed, that holds all the promise invested in its preparation–and a third wing simply implies a resource, a kind of existential aid, akin to the Third Eye: there is something extra, unplanned but propitious, that offers information or assistance specifically useful to our goals. Lucky us, right?

The AstroEssence: There are only a few other influences at play for the 15th, and these may have us spending the time leading up to the Full Moon with our attention in places other than those that will be illuminated with the Lunar culmination. One is the way we might be weighing methods of healing against our own wounds, judging physical as well as mental and emotional situations for how healthy they might be; it’s an attempt to concentrate on hurts, to deal with them, but perhaps not to totally embrace what we know to be the healthy option. We’re trying to justify holding on to our wounds. It’s our thinking that’s encouraging the problem: we are obsessed with the dark, with how we’ve been wronged, with how others hold power over us, and in continuing to nurse our hurts it’s taking a (Self) destructive turn. Fortunately, though, what we’ll actually choose to do will be done with an eye to building the future–it’s just that we may not see how much better the future could be, if we could forgive, heal, let go (Chiron sesq Hygeia, Mercury sq Pluto, Mars trine NN)

For those born with the Sun at 23 Libra: It’s all about taking what’s new, modern, original in your world and making the most of it. The sudden, the surprising, the heartfelt facilitates accomplishment, and the smart move is to embrace them. The only thing we can count on is change, right? Oh, and death and taxes. But, this coming year should be more than a little positive and profitable for you, Libra, just as long as you conquer that crisis in confidence, and realize you can’t rule unless you’re willing to claim your territory. Good luck, and Happy Birthday!

Van Gogh 1882 'The Hague - Carpenter's Yard and Laundry' {{PD}}

Van Gogh 1882 ‘The Hague – Carpenter’s Yard and Laundry’ {{PD}}

It’s a complicated day full of complicated feelings, but we can gain something truly worthwhile from it, can see the Love, or even where and how to access resources, if we can get a little distance mentally and emotionally from what will feel like violations of our highest values–and this could include things causing disruption on the home front, with the spouse/ mate/ partner, or with those areas of life we honor and consider sacred–whether we are aware or not of holding that attitude.

Our sense of effectiveness, of our ability to express our Will, the urge to be different or to follow the group (whatever is unlike our usual inclination), to show our originality, all will threaten (or at least seem to require adjustment to) what we name a priority–and our need to earn, or our relationships, may pressure what we deem important in such a way that we may feel we must dishonor our highest values in order to deal with circumstances.

There are two elements that may make things even more difficult to handle: one is the way communications (and our own thinking!) will rub us the wrong way, surprising or shocking or causing a kind of feeling anarchy within; and two is the way our own choices and actions will be, not just anti-instinctual, but will undermine our creativity, and could possibly be based on accepting misunderstanding, believing a lie, or embracing a fantasy or deception as reality.

The peak discord will be from about 1 PM Pacific, just before the Moon enters Void status, through entry into Taurus at 4:12 PM PST. During that brief window it may be particularly hard to contain or even pinpoint our feelings–and this really will be the problem for the whole day, where it permeates events in a less intense form: that there is such internal discord, and or tough demands made by other facets of the life, that we may lose perspective and become alienated from our own core values–and so go astray because of it.

Out of all this, though, comes something related to the current position of transiting Venus (at 18 Scorpio), or through matters of the Houses Venus rules in the natal chart, that is positive, enlightening, and that fosters a bright new understanding of or knowledge concerning the Self (Vesta qnx Juno, Uranus contraparallel and Venus sesq Vesta, Mars contraparallel Sedna and sesq Neptune, Merc sq Uranus, Sun novile Venus)

Do you know your priorities and goals? Not those things you think you care about, but where your energy really goes? The dissonance between what we tell ourselves we want and what the Soul (working through the unconscious) drives us toward is what causes personal discord and stalls progress. Find out by examining your natal Vesta--and enjoy your Sunday!

‘Stillleben mit Samovar und chinesischer Teeschale’ (Still Life with Samovar and Teacup) Max Schödl 1869 {{PD}}

We have the drive, and the focus, to fulfill ambitions (or at least to create the circumstances that will pave the way), and we aren’t afraid to, as they say, break a few eggs to get that omelet made. The best part may be that we can see the value in our wounds, the way our hurts have given us wisdom and shaped us into the person we are now. We are bringing all our skills, learning, and experience to bear on achieving our goals–and that means thinking is laser-focused, concentrated on power expression and making successful change in our world. Is there any down side to today’s influences? There is a destructive quality, even a cruelty, about communications, so keenly aimed are they at accomplishment; that could mean we are less than sensitive to the needs of others. We could also be tempted to wallow a bit in hurt, as we’ll so appreciate the things we gain from it that we could forget the real purpose is to help us move forward. The Aries Moon doesn’t help, making us even more Self-focused, and the Moon’s meeting with Uranus around 4 PM PST suggests a point when we will be most likely thinking individually, and perhaps seem unreliable to others as a result (and we may see others this way, too.) Under the right circumstances the conjoining of Luna and Uranus could blend our own interests with those of the group, making us willing to share our energy and so serving both causes–and this could be emotionally freeing. We can be very effective today in moving toward our desires–just try not to lose sight of other priorities (relationships, financials, values, that might not seem so important right now) in the process.

Thanks so much to all who’ve been so supportive–and if you’re here often, please consider a donation, at this blog or to your favorite astrologer! Have a great Saturday!

Lunar Eclipse 27 September 2015: A New Vestal Path

I’ve been obsessed with doves the past few days–I’m taking it as a symbol for the Lunar event. ‘Le Jeune Fille Aux Colombes’ 1874 Charles Joshua Chaplin {{PD}}

There’s a total Lunar eclipse on the 27th at 4 Aries 40, beginning at 5:11 PM Pacific time when the Moon is still below the horizon in that Western time zone; it reaches maximum at 7:47 PM PDT, though my software shows it completing closer to 7:50 PM, which is the chart I used. The eclipse is completely over by 10:22 PM Pacific. As you know, a Lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and Moon, with a Total eclipse caused by the perfect alignment of all three bodies along the ecliptic. The Earth blocks the light of the Sun from reflecting off the Moon; still some light from the Sun passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, which bends it toward the Moon, with most colors of the spectrum blocked or scattered (known as Rayleigh scattering) and red the only color that makes it through. This gives the Moon a reddish hue during a total eclipse, prompting the descriptor, ‘Blood Moon’.

This is also a Super Moon, which is the point on the Moon’s orbit when it’s closest to the Earth, known as perigee, making it appear larger from our vantage point, especially when it’s near the horizon. As to those end times prophecies about this combination being an unprecedented event (including the way we’ve had a series of these, not just one), check out this overview and scroll down to ‘Media Attention and Critics’ to see why it’s much ado.

This Full Moon is opposed Juno and Black Moon Lilith, is squine to Pallas (that’s an aspect halfway between a square and a trine, 105 degrees, that carries contradictory influences), sesquiquadrate to Venus, in wide square to Saturn, and in conjunction to Vesta. Full Moons are endings, culminations, conclusions–but as we know, in the endings lie the seeds of beginnings, and an eclipse goes one better, promising obliteration–in this case, obliteration of the emotions or short-circuiting the intuitive flow (Moon), specifically those things related to our highest values, or the home or mate (Vesta), by material considerations (the Earth), with the aspects describing how this will play out.

The Lunar eclipse conjunct Vesta, both in Aries, suggests that old values and priorities, especially those based on emotion or that have been passed down without examination, will be eclipsed through the mechanism of the material world; new leaders will be looked to, and independence and assertiveness may gain prominence. The individual cause may become paramount within the home, in the mate relationship, or in the causes to which we dedicate our energy; with this latter, what we get out of our commitment, and what we can do to make it happen, become the prime motivating forces (Vesta in Aries).

What causes the change is symbolized by the Sun (which casts the light that makes the eclipse phenomenon visible in the first place) and its conjunction to Juno and Black Moon Lilith. What triggers the change is a personal need for empowerment or to establish status, with this need motivated by matters hidden, ignore, denied, or that bring rage to the surface. The contact to Pallas suggests this can be wise and practical, but also impractical or unwise, all at once, perhaps in a ‘means vs. ends’ way, and the contacts to Saturn and Venus imply the reality picture may not be easily altered, while the effects of what transpires will be tough on relationships and/ or finances.

The Sabian for the eclipse is, ‘A Triangle With Wings’. This tells us that anything ‘in balance’, but most especially that which is Vestal and in balance (so related to the home, the mate, or the causes to which we’re dedicated) will be elevated, or perhaps set free, by what transpires with the eclipse. When we look at the Sun symbol, we get, ‘A Man Revealing To His Students The Foundation Of An Inner Knowledge Upon Which A “New World” Could Be Built’. This is the idea of revelation, of realization, and suggests that what we ‘see’ at the eclipse, literally or psychically, shows us the possibilities, where those wings can take us.

Generally, what we find at the eclipse is that we will be motivated to look after our own interests, to listen to the still, small voice within (as Edgar Cayce used to say), in order to blaze a new path as the potentials are revealed to us. We will see an assessment and re-establishing of our own Vestal priorities–and from this, all other changes emanate.

This is a great time to learn more about your Vesta–see my new book here–it covers all the signs and placements, offers lots of examples of Vesta active in the life, discusses possible origins of Vestal symbolism, and gives questions and exercises that will help reveal Vesta’s role in your life.

Aries New Moon of 18 April 2015: Birth of the Will

'Starry Night' Edvard Munch c1923 {{PD}}

‘Starry Night’ Edvard Munch c1923 {{PD}}

New Moon occurs at 11:57 AM PDT at 28 Aries 25. A NM in Aries is the birth of energy that drives individual initiative, leadership, that propels achievement that is in our own Self-interest, and could give the ego or the Self-concept a ‘new lease on life’; it is the birth of some new facet of the Will, or the Self-identity. Because the energy is so individually focused, where it falls in the natal chart can tell us a great deal about whether one will be able to process and use that energy in a straightforward way, or whether others will voice objections to this ‘new you’.

The Sabian for this degree is, ‘The Music Of The Spheres’. This promises that what is born at this time has a quality of ‘Cosmic alignment’, bringing something forward that is an inevitable development of the individual, an Arian statement about the Self that must emerge and that is expressive of the Soul and the Cosmic plan. That should reassure us that whatever happens will be something uniquely characteristic of who we are, especially in terms of ego and want, but that suits and facilitates future expression of our Will completely.

James Tissot – ‘Ball on Shipboard’ 1873 {{PD}}

3 AM PDT of the 16th the Pisces Moon opposes Pallas. We may be inspired or just deluded, but either way we may be tempted to ignore the smart thing to do. Don’t. 10 AM PDT the Moon forms the base of a Finger of God with Sedna, catching the South Node at the midpoint, apex the North Node and Ceres; the Moon also trines the Sun. We sense what we can’t really see, something linking us to the past, and this informs both the future and our sense of personal authority and power. Our vision is clear at this point, so that anything we conclude, even when it’s gleaned from unconscious sources, will be accurate and informative. 12:30 PM PDT the Moon creates another Finger with Sedna, this time with an apex of Mars and Vesta. What we’ve sensed now prompts action or choice; the good news is what we act on or choose is directly in line with our truest values. 5:30 PM PDT the Moon squares Venus. Our sense of the creative or a need for escape is in conflict with relationship or financial needs. Don’t blow something important just for a few hours off, but do note the need you feel at this time: it’s indicative of some itch that can cause trouble if it’s not eventually scratched. Void begins at 5:59 PM PDT; the Moon enters Aries at 9:07 PM PDT and immediately trine Jupiter fresh in Leo. We may have an excited and expansive feeling about the social scene or from knowledge just gained; this is a great way to kick off the Moon in Aries, as this confidence and excitement primes us for Aries flavored action.
