'The Gathering of the Manna' Tissot c1898 {{PD-Art}}

‘The Gathering of the Manna’ Tissot c1898 {{PD-Art}}

I saw Venus square Pluto, perfecting today, in action, as part of the long-term Uranus-Pluto square, with Venus making a T-square and only promising to get worse, as our Lady of Love heads toward conjunction with Zeus (ambition, lust, desire). The way I saw it play out was this: the group (or I should say, individuals appointing themselves as speaking for the group–Uranus is in Aries, after all) asks for discussion of ideas/ exercise of the intellect, but doesn’t like anyone they label as rebellious (others might call them original, thinking for themselves, or loners)–there is a right stance to take, and you must take it, and want to be part of our group, and if you don’t, you’re intellectually inadequate–because you couldn’t be as modern, learned, or smart as we are, otherwise you would conform! The group offers obliteration (via Pluto–of the intellect, the ego, or anything that indicates separateness) to those who don’t see the group’s standards as holding ultimate value–which says that the minute a Uranian entity like a group forms, it loses it’s Uranian qualities if it chooses to reject anything that differs from it–it in effect becomes Saturnian, authoritarian, intolerant.

Have you had an experience like this, have you watched the group reject anyone not willing to bow down? This is not the first time I’ve seen this, but I think the willingness to judge others so harshly can only be based on fear: of being left out themselves, of not being seen as worthy of high status, of having wasted their time, energy, money pursuing something someone else doesn’t seem to value or want. For some people there’s nothing worse than doing, buying, being something that others aren’t impressed by–I think I ran into them today.

What I saw followed the old idea that what comes out of someone else’s mouth says far more about them than it does about the person they’re speaking of–when I remembered that, I realized how little anything that was said, particularly that was said to me, had to do with me–and I went back and looked at my own assertions, because those are the ones I must own. I’d simply said that I didn’t think ‘x’ necessarily indicated ‘y’, nor did I believe it was necessary to follow a particular learning trajectory to end up at ‘y’–no more, no less. I just don’t hold a lot of ‘shoulds’ in assessing others–I believe the proof is in the work, and nowhere else, and I think that’s true in all areas of life: I don’t need to judge someone else as fit or not in some area, their life experiences will do that for them.

We enjoyed the Superior Conjunction today (the meeting of the Sun and Mercury with Mercury direct) which is typically a culmination point of its own. I’ve been watching for some time now as people show who they really are under the pressure of Uranus-Pluto, and like everyone I’ve been dealing with these same pressures myself. What I discovered was that I am not fearful enough, or insecure enough, and that I am not working to prove myself to others (the only person I need to impress is me), and so there are some people who will judge me and see me as inferior, because I won’t struggle with them (they think I should care what they think), or because I’m just not like them (they see their own way is superior, and if I don’t support that view, I’m wrong)–and that’s okay.

Stories–feel free to share ’em if you’ve got ’em! And have a great weekend (the Lunar portion of the forecast for tomorrow is below) Thank you!

The Push-Pull of the Tides: Uranus Retrograde, Saturn Direct

‘The Seashore’ Wm H Margetson 1900 {{PD-Art}}

Saturn goes direct evening of the 7th Pacific time, at 4 Scorpio 49, and Uranus, stalling out at about 12 and a half degrees of Aries, retrogrades on the 17th. This may feel a little like shifting tides; we’re just realizing something has lifted and loosened (Saturn) when the tension of the Uranus turnaround becomes apparent. A Uranus retrograde seems to manifest in chaotic encounters, accidents, and uncertainty, always very close to the actual retrograde date (typically only a day or two before and after, at most). I’ve observed tension at the retrograde point of other heavyweights, but Uranus seems to be different: we really do seem to be plunged into a kind of confusion when he withdraws, with a much higher chance of inattentiveness, carelessness, and even, if I may be so dramatic, betrayal (this latter showing in abrupt and often bewildering changes to our role within the group). Be aware that just as what was holding us back seems to ease, we encounter a kind of riptide, not always discernible to the observer, which is why we’re so often taken by surprise, and overwhelmed, when we swim into its path.

If either of these planets is in hard aspect to a natal point or body at the time of turnaround, the associated energies, as well as any House ruled, should be watched; with Saturn, we look for clues as to what might progress, and where we might feel a removal of impediments–or, for those like me, who actually find themselves with restrictions lifted when Saturn is retro, we might see a slowing and inexplicable halt to what seemed to be sailing along just fine–while with Uranus it’s about the unexpected, with caution in related areas called for. In any case, it’s a chance to get a little bit of a jump on what could become trouble areas–and those not into astrology will swear it all comes ‘out of the blue’.

A very Neptunian idyll at the beach, by Rupert Bunny c1891, {{PD-Art}} in both the USA and country of origin, Australia

Neptune retrogrades at 1:25 AM Pacific time of the 7th; what can we expect? Neptune will have just risen on changing motion, hovering above the horizon, in a Grand Trine with Saturn and Venus, and square the Mars-Pallas conjunction. The Grand Trine is a Water one, and with the transiting Moon in Gemini and heading for conjunction with Mars-Pallas, the picture is one of emotional realization and (probably) manifestation of ideals, values, or the creative in relationships, or through earning capacity, either arising from previous or current intelligent action or choice, or prompting this in the immediate future. Whew! That’s a mouthful. What we’re likely to be looking at is a powerful and balanced situation of either realization through the feelings, or manifestations in the reality structure, of something related to our values or our creative activity, and we have either been smart about what we’ve done to get to this, or this will bring us to a smart future choice. This is likely to sneak up on us, coming across as a ‘given’, not really drawing much attention, and probably showing up via House matters where Neptune is now transiting, in the matters of the House Neptune rules in the natal chart, and/ or through anything transiting Neptune currently aspects in the natal chart. Satisfaction in some way is the likely outcome, though it may be tough getting there; initially we could react badly (or have rejected in the past) the very smart moves that are now presenting themselves as ‘the answer’–but it would be unwise to reject this out of some delusion of how things should be–in order to create what we want, we must acknowledge how things really are. Dreams, both the literal kind and those involving our goals, should be examined, because that’s where all the potentials have been showing up, of late. Use them as inspiration, as guidelines, and as a springboard to action.

Uranus-Pluto Comes Home: the Vestal T-Square

'Tea house at Koishikawa the Morning After a Snowfall' by Hokusai c1830 {{PD-Art}}

‘Tea house at Koishikawa the Morning After a Snowfall’ by Hokusai c1830 {{PD-Art}}

Starting on the 22nd, Vesta creeps in to create a T-square with big guns Pluto and Uranus. How, we might ask, will this change a dynamic Cardinal picture that has on-and-off been driving action for months? It introduces what may be a fairly surprising factor to the equation: our care for home, the intimate partner, and those matters in life we find sacred, are suddenly being weighed against the push for change and expression of each individual’s uniqueness (or against each individual’s role within the group). Innovation and invention, the power to truly affect circumstances, and the deep need to eliminate certain unproductive elements in the life will all threaten those sacred causes and sacred personal spaces, including relationships.

The square between heavies Pluto and Uranus perfects once again on the 20th, and may by its familiarity persuade us that, though we’re knee-deep in resolving the conflict (which could feel like many things; it doesn’t necessarily present as something over which we appear to have direct control–this likely dependent on the natal Houses through which they’re transiting and the natal situation for them itself) we may not anticipate that there are new dimensions yet to show themselves that are either a direct result of the square, or that come about because of actions we take to resolve the square. It’s highly possible we’ll see the Vestal upset as our own fault, springing from something we or others may categorize as selfish–but who will look out for us, if we don’t? And we must ask ourselves, when others criticize our choices, is it fair for me to put myself first? Nine times out of ten, the answer will be a resounding ‘Yes’.

So, we grapple, and then must deal with the repercussions of this on our intimate relationships, on our home situation, and to our causes, those things we find sacred as well as those things to which we dedicate our life energy. How are we to know that we are handling things ‘correctly’? The first ‘test’ may be the issue of fairness to ourselves; solutions are no good for anyone when we sacrifice our well-being to satisfy someone else. The next criterion may be recognizing the need for elimination or change to particular facets of our lives–the overarching purpose of the square is just that, and can’t be set aside to preserve outmoded elements that really must go, or that at the very least must morph to accommodate current conditions and needs. Lastly, we must be willing–to do what needs doing, to meet all challenges with a loving heart, and to choose what’s best for ourselves even as we vow not to harm others (and here we should note, we are not responsible for others’ hurt and pain that is in reaction to our choices–it’s vain to think we can control others’ reactions to us, and it’s manipulative for others to believe we should tailor our actions to their feelings).

If we face the conflicts and challenges presented by the square with a pure intent, meeting the circumstances with the idea of doing what’s best for all concerned, we are likely to find resolutions presenting themselves sooner rather than later–it’s our own resistance to what we know we must do, leave behind, or change that drags out difficulties. There are many possible outcomes to Uranus-Pluto, but all involve release, and taking in something new, an evolution of circumstances that reflects an individual revolution in consciousness–and since there’s no way to stop it, we’d be much better off embracing it, no matter what we think we know about how things ‘should be’.

Eclipse Effect: Seeing a Splinter of the Shadow

Have you noticed it, too? Since the Earth came between the Moon and the Sun last week (and cast its shadow in eclipse–6 more weeks of winter? You betcha!) a single facet in each individual seems to have come forward for prominent expression. I think the area where the issue/ characteristic originates is that of the matters of the House in which the eclipse fell, and the facet is very targeted, as if the eclipse jarred loose something specific in each of us that then just had to spill out. This was something ’til now hidden from us, and likely from others, as suggested by the Scorpio placement of the event; if we are paying attention, we have learned something about everyone we’ve encountered in any significant way during this period, and probably something about ourselves, as well.

The planet ‘ruling’ the eclipse, Pluto, was closest in aspect, by square, to its long-time on again, off again partner, Uranus in Aries, at the time of the event. The planet of individuality, of uniqueness, of acting out and shows of independence seems to have drawn from the Underworld something we’ve been keeping in the dark, perhaps because it spoils our Self-image, perhaps because it challenges our typical modus operandi. The ‘I Am’ has cried out, and we’d better listen.

We may be tempted to brush what we’ve seen aside, terming it an anomaly, but we should do just the opposite: embrace it, either as knowledge (“Look what I found inside me!”) or as warning (“Where the hell did that come from?”) At this point it’s likely we feel whatever came forward has now passed; but to quote one of our greatest philosophers, Mr. George Carlin: “Just cuz you got the monkey off your back . . . doesn’t mean the circus has left town!” And so it is with what the eclipse brought forward: along with helping us see that something once seemingly impossible no longer is–we see the potentials–we have also learned about a single, salient characteristic within ourselves, and also within others important to us, that may be significant in driving current life direction or concerns.

Whether the characteristic itself was deemed positive or negative, there can be a positive, or at least productive, outcome from its exposure: we can take what we saw or learned seriously, and address whatever need or urge it expressed from deep within. The valley between eclipses (for it does seem to me to be a kind of valley, where the eclipse falls across the landscape, dominating with shadow) is the perfect time to meet the issue presented head-on, and to deal with it. To avoid it is to push the urge back underground–and though the monkey may seem to be off our back–you get the picture.

Here’s something wonderful.

Each of us will hold the key to something special today; for some this will presage the upcoming Lunar eclipse. Detail of ‘Death and the Gravedigger’ by Carlos Schwabe c1890s {{PD-Art}}

This is from the current issue of ECLIPSE; order now to get all three issues that include analysis on the upcoming eclipses, and to receive a new issue each week!

23 April may be a paradigm-shifter, or, at the very least, we will seriously consider altering what it is we want, what we hope to attain. Pluto proceeds in retrograde to trine Pallas, bringing massive power and immense wisdom into alignment, underground; change can happen, much of it ‘out of sight’, guided by what’s wise, and communications will be infused with our truest beliefs. Philosophies may be shared, and transformation visits practical skills; what doesn’t fare well at this time is the personal agenda, the desires and ambitions for the individual. Instead we have a rare day when major change, physical and mental, may occur, with the unusual condition of the perfect ability to transform combining with the perfect realization of wisdom–a unique set of elements that should result in a highly unique outcome–just don’t push too hard for these energies to fit your specific plans–they may end up drawing new ones for you. (Pluto trine Pallas, Mercury sextile Jupiter, opposed hZeus)

Will this presage the first eclipse, which promises to show us how something, some goal or dream or ideal we thought was impossible is, somehow, now within our reach? It may, or it could be its own thing, more focused on the noble aim or betterment for the social sphere than on the individual want, though the eclipse could encompass either–today the emphasis is on the bigger picture, and on our role in making the world, even just a little, a better place. To know if the upcoming Lunar eclipse will be personal or Universal for you, check where it will fall in your natal chart: 1st through 5th House, it’ll be first person all the way, 7th through 11th, your focus will be on the wider world and those in it, 6th or 12th could go either way.

How’s the lord of the Underworld treating you? Now that he’s left stationary status and begun the slow backward (from our viewpoint) trek, we may get a glimpse at what’s slated to be plowed under and, inevitably, re-planted. For something that moves this slowly, we typically will only feel the shift in direction acutely if it occurs in close hard aspect to a responsive natal placement or, possibly, when it occurs in close aspect to other transiting bodies that are in play through our charts and our life scenarios. Otherwise the change in direction may only be felt as a background buzz, a difference in tone hard to pinpoint until the body picks up speed (seems like a funny thing to say about a slug like Pluto!) But there it is: despite the potential for sizable, permanent change we are still likely at this point to be unaware of it–but there are things we can do to draw out the Plutonian, and deal with it.

This time around Pluto retrograded 26 minutes from sextile with Chiron; everything else is over 2 degrees, and so excluded. This suggests to me that those mild wounds, those irritations it’s so easy to live with, may be the way to dig up the Plutonian energy and get it out into the light. Does disclosure need to be public, does the dark thing need a witness, in order to create alchemy? No, the only witness needed is our own consciousness, though I would say that if we examine something on our own, but continue to cover or deny it in the presence of others, it will behave as if unexamined; exposure is the stuff on which the retro Pluto thrives.

What things have been eating at you, especially things that concern structure, hierarchy, rules and regulations, the status quo, ‘What Is’, restrictions, boundaries, what’s established, what’s repressed (internal) or suppressed (by externals)? What Dad or the Boss is putting out can suggest just exactly what needs to be modified in our relationship; look too to the matters of the House through which Pluto now transits and the House Pluto rules natally (the one with Scorpio on the cusp)–these are also areas with big potential (or even requirements) that circumstances go from one state to another–and of course, there’s no stipulation that things will be ruined; they can just as easily be replaced or refurbished.

How much control do we have over the change that Pluto brings? Quite a bit, if we are willing to do the destroying, transforming, or re-birthing ourselves; this is, if we are willing to be proactive in recognizing what’s no longer of use or no longer viable in its current form, and then alter conditions or circumstances so that things are at least workable, and at best, exactly what we want. Bringing about this latter condition is often possible–passion is a facet of Pluto, and one that often drives his manifestation–but requires the nerve to stand up to what’s dark, hidden, destructive, or rage-tinged in ourselves or in others–and that isn’t always something we feel safe doing.

But that’s the thing: you can’t expect to feel safe dealing with Plutonian subjects. Just accept that you may be frightened, unnerved, enraged, or that something you thought you valued might be destroyed in your dance with the darkness. That’s sometimes the point of Plutonian conditions that arise outside our control: to obliterate what we didn’t have the guts to get rid of on our own, or what we let languish under non-crisis circumstances. We may mourn what leaves–that’s just the Plutonian thing to do–but this creates an opening into which we can pour whatever we want. The power Pluto hands us to create is real; we should take care not to allow our own fear to cause us to hand that power over to others, or to force it outside ourselves and call it ‘fate’.

A little something for 13 April, from ECLIPSE–to see it all, please subscribe:

Originality, innovative abilities, and our unique viewpoint provide us with ways to express ourselves and our ideas, and these expressions lead us in the direction of raising our status or our effectiveness in dealing with life matters. We will run up against some solid obstacles to advancement; the advantage today is that difficulties won’t morph and grow three heads before our eyes. Communications clear up (but not until late in the day, see below) and we say what we mean and mean what we say–keep in mind this is true for everyone else, as well. (Uranus sextile Juno, Saturn square Juno, Mercury enters Aries)

3 AM PDT the Taurus Moon sextiles Mercury. At this point communications are still tense, obfuscation may be rampant, and even our own thoughts are unclear–this is the apex point for misunderstandings–try to delay major interactions and messages until Merc enters Aries. Void begins at 5:31 AM Pacific time; the Moon enters Gemini at 7:13 AM PDT. 3 PM PDT the Moon squares Neptune, making for an emotionally jarring time, where we either find out the shortcomings of our creative endeavors or we ‘get the message’ concerning the real situation behind something we’d known only through our own assumptions and imaginings. This gives us the emotional fuel to correct anything that comes forward at this time. In the 7 PM hour Pacific time Merc enters Aries–thoughts and intentions become one-pointed, and in some, aggressive and/ or formidable.

And for the 14th:

The only new aspect formed is a semi-square of Venus to Jupiter–that couldn’t hurt much, right? Well, what’s your definition of ‘hurt’? If you mean there’s a cost to being part of the social sphere or to going after what you want in society, if you mean relationship details ought not go public in a passive-aggressive display of dominance, or if you believe earnings might not be commensurate with the impact of your knowledge or material shared with the community, then yes, there’ll be some hurtin’ today. Take it as a blessing, because you’re finding out the details of your actual relationship with the social sphere, and the better you understand how you fit in, the better you can plan how to make an even bigger, more meaningful, and much more rewarding, splash.

‘Travelers on Horseback’ Hiroshige early 19th century

From ECLIPSE Weekly Aspect Digest:

1 PM PST the Moon conjuncts Chiron, squares Jupiter, and just afterward sextiles Venus. We are hurt by something in the social circle, or in our attempts to expand our purview, at least at first–then we gain by our efforts some material reward or gesture of affection–it’s worth it to stop for a moment and realize that’s not always the result from being reactionary, and count our blessings. Just after 6 PM PST the Moon sextiles Pluto-Juno, then follows up with a square to Vesta and a trine to Saturn. We may feel very empowered emotionally, making for a real sense of confidence, especially concerning creativity and one’s place in the Collective or Cosmos. This causes problems though, by violating our highest values–we are likely to take confidence beyond reasonable Self-assertion and into officious territory–and this may cause others to put a stop to our progress. Proceed with care, to avoid someone throwing obstacles into your path.

Have a wonderful Monday!

Niagara, The Table Rock in Winter c1847 by Gignoux {{PD-Art}}

Niagara, The Table Rock in Winter c1847 by Gignoux {{PD-Art}}

The 19th of December brings wise action (Mars sextile Pallas) and sudden developments in finances or relationships (Venus trine Uranus)–so what could go wrong? If we’re going after ambitions and desires and not being honest, fact-oriented, and genuine in the process, we could just blow it all up. The mix of influences says things could be really really good, or could go to hell, and it’s pretty much under our own control–but if we are wedded to illusion or fantasy, busy deluding ourselves, or busy hiding the truth from others, we are in for a wallop–and we can conclude, if things don’t go well, that we have been dodging reality in some way–and we’d do well to find out just how that’s been happening.

December 20th 7 AM PST the Moon conjuncts Uranus, making for shocks or surprises of our own making–really! By 9 AM PST the Moon trines Venus and semi-sextiles Chiron; we are easily injured in matters of love or money, but a willingness to be Self-responsible turns this period into one that can be profitable and very enjoyable, though don’t expect anything permanent to come out of this.

The above is from the current issue of ECLIPSE, and will be my last public post for a while. ECLIPSE continues as usual by subscription (see the many variations at right). Please enjoy a happy, healthy, prosperous, forgiving, healing, and magical holiday season! Love, jd
