Instincts serve our needs very well today–and so does spontaneity, originality, and using what we know from the past. Impulse reveals a lot, and interactions tell us what we and others are focused on avoiding at all costs. At the same time, we need to beware of exerting our authority or power where it’s not productive, in areas of relationship or finance that currently call only for our dedication and positive input. In the moment we can profit by denying the darkness, or by behaving as if things will never change–somehow that wins us kudos, rewards, and Love, and is the Right Thing–but that’s a temporary measure, not meant to be carried on for long–for now, engage with an uncritical eye, heart, and tongue.

Today sees perfection of the Sun conjoined Mars in Leo. In order to truly process this event, we also have to note the Sun’s quincunx to Hygeia, also perfecting today. Together, we see that ‘Right Action’ is taken specifically in the name of becoming healthy, in whatever sense the individual believes that’s lacking. We become Warriors for what’s personally vital and nourishing to the Soul (Sun), our actions and choices tailored to whatever creates a grounding from which we may shine as unique Beings. Relax into this highly dynamic energy–it will carry you, and in no uncertain terms, show you where to go and what to do.

Today’s word image is bees in early morning, gathered at the edge of a stone birdbath for a drink. I don’t think of insects as needing a water source like all other living things, but of course they do. What needs basic nourishment that you could be overlooking, particularly spiritually or emotionally (the water)?

Rihard Jakopič – Sejalec (1912) {{PD}}

Sticking to values and standards, and choosing action based on what we care about, will absolutely benefit us. Expect to need some adjustment in attitude, approach, or methods, in order to gather in earnings or Love; and anticipate that unexpected events, obstacles, or bumps in the road are due to unacknowledged attitudes of our own, feelings of dismissal, betrayal, or rage that we have been pretending don’t exist. Knowing that, you can excavate immediately, and so remove the difficulty and proceed forward to the reward.

Mercury enters Virgo, skewing thoughts toward both keeping accounts and making ourselves and others accountable. Critical thinking is on the agenda; just make sure that in dissecting or critiquing others or ourselves, there’s an underlying point to it all. Think: Seed Moments, Details Matter, The Healthy Approach, and no matter what, always keep the end result or purpose in mind.

Today’s word image is an incident from my own life. Confession: I am a book hoarder. We are chronically short of bookshelves, thanks to my propensity to squirrel away books like nuts for the winter. At one end of the living room there are piles of books, waiting for a home. The other day I was standing at the opposite end, having a moment of gratitude–just happy for all we have, feeling immensely thankful–and one of the piles of books falls over; or rather, part of the pile fell. When I walked over to it, there was a bright green paperback exposed from the middle of the stack, a novel by Carl Hiaasen. The title? ‘Lucky You’. You just can’t tell me the Universe isn’t communicating all. the. time–and with a sense of humor! What message are you receiving today?

Max Slevogt – ‘Portrait of the dancer Marietta di Rigardo’ 1903 {{PD}}

Here’s to hoping we’re all being scrupulously honest with ourselves, because those who aren’t will find their own actions, relationships, what they value, blowing up in their faces, and real changes will come to their place in the power structure–read that as, ‘power will be yanked away from them’–but that’s not you, is it, kind reader? We do have quick and original thinking at our disposal; mental inventiveness peaks, but it’s also imperative that we don’t promise more than we can deliver. The silver lining in all this is that what occurs can foster significant healing, most especially between the individual and the Truth, but only if there is willingness to see and accept reality for what it is, and to see ourselves in that same, clear light.

Today’s word image is a Boston terrier that sits for hours at a time, observing himself in a mirror. This is one of those times when the interconnectedness of events should be more obvious to us than ever, and this applies particularly to issues of forgiveness and judgment. Inspect those areas of life that are being held up to you as a reflection, especially in terms of showing you the attitude to take, or how to proceed, in an unrelated area.

Have a great week! Donate at right, read through this link, and breathe deeply, taking in New Moon energy as it builds toward that first August eclipse.

Thomas Jones – ‘Mur à Naples’ 1781 {{PD}}

Every smart or practical choice seems to present obstacles, walls, restrictions, or suggests we will have to do without–why is that? It’s not really that doing the wise thing is suppressive so much as smart choices have limits built in–that’s part of what makes them smart! Accept that, look for the underlying harmonies and balance within all circumstances, and notice how everything is currently focused on the future–and trust that those conditions will guide things successfully, if we can resist jumping in and monkeying around unnecessarily. In other news, the Sun enters Leo,and lions everywhere stretch and roar under the summer sun/ winter glare, bringing our attention to letting ourselves shine, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself right now: we’re in Dark of the Moon territory, and should relax.

‘Clouds over the Black Sea–Crimea’ – Boris Israelevich Anisfeld 1906 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a blue the color of a clear sky. The sky’s the limit? Maybe, but the important thing is a feeling of expansiveness, rather than a literal no-boundaries kind of experience (see forecast note, above).

New Moon in Leo 23 July 2017 Fight For What You Love

Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin {{PD}}

Conflicting inclinations set up the energy dynamic of the New Moon: on the one hand, we may find ourselves digging and digging in relation to stated values and priorities–we somehow just can’t trust what we see–and yet we see the perfect way to benefit through Love or Finances, specifically by focusing on what’s loved, important to us, valuable for its beauty, or treasured. These impulses may or may not present at cross-purposes, and some of us will delve into the essence of only one or the other, but together they set the stage and grab our attention, even as the New Moon slips in, plants a seed, and carries things forward.

The New Moon in Leo occurs in the wee hours Pacific time, at 2:46 AM at 00 Leo 44. It perfects just slightly more than one degree from conjoining Mars–and that means both bodies will move on very quickly to perfect contact to the Warrior energy. A very rough Fist is formed, with the NM apex to the square made between Black Moon Lilith and Neptune. This suggests trouble, in the form of rage or denial coupled with deception, delusion, or imagination run amok, that creates a need to ‘strike out’, to go it alone, or to let the ego drive, feeling we are ill-equipped to handle things any other way.

LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana, Photo By Hu Totya – Own work {{PD}} https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1222063

That’s unfortunate–but is there a way out, a remedy to subconscious anger or righteous resentment? Yes, via the New Moon’s novile to Venus in Gemini. Think about, talk about, consider what you love–that’s the best way to both see how to react and what to do.

The New Moon makes two other aspects, an out-of-sign trine to Chiron, and an out-of-sign square to Uranus. Expect jolts, but healing, Higher Understanding, and easy hurt, skills called forward to address the unexpected. The Sabian for the New Moon offers a clue: ‘Blood Rushes To A Man’s Head As His Vital Energies Are Mobilized Under The Spur Of Ambition’. We may be inclined to try to handle things through the intellect (Uranus) rather than the heart (Leo), though the image makes clear the man is driven by desire (Venus)–and it would be a mistake to focus solely on the mind; we need to utilize the mind in support of those cared-for people and issues, rather than letting the intellect, or anger, lead.

Though I don’t usually subscribe to checking every Sabian, I think considering the importance of Venus, we could use whatever hints the symbol might provide: ‘A Tumultuous Labor Demonstration’. It’s in the midst of chaos, upset, fighting for what we want (New Moon conj Mars) that we discover, reiterate, or crystallize the presence and intention of Love–and the New Moon provides the energy and focus to put that Love into action.

Just a Little AstroEssence 21 July 2017 The Inclinations of Nature

What’s smart is empowering (that’s no surprise), but we seem determined to rebel or shock, to go into the future blindly, to mess with the power balance in relationships and/ or finances, and all of it, yes all of it, springs from misguided beliefs, misunderstandings, and a general spiritual malaise that makes it hard to focus on the good stuff. We find the flaws in our ideals, and then are angry, not realizing that ideals are essentially static, dimensionless ideas of perfection that don’t take into account the messiness of human life and the riotous inclinations of Nature. Forgive everyone and everything, but especially yourself, for not being Perfect–and if possible, try to appreciate the beauty and energy to be found in the mess.

Today’s word image is two children, playing at being monsters, who are sitting down to afternoon tea wearing fancy hats; they are talking in ‘monster’ voices while passing invisible sandwiches and asking, ‘One lump or two?’ This image suggests the normalization of something abnormal–or is it the incursion of one thing into another, that simply doesn’t belong? Once you identify this, you have to ask yourself, does it need to change?

‘La fille à la cigarette’, Anders Zorn, 1892 {{PD}}

Mars enters Leo, and we may be hard pressed to control ourselves; we’re either reacting out of fear, anger, or a desperate attempt to avoid something, or we’re feeling like victims of the sudden, the accidental, or of group-think. The rough part is that we feel especially competent, poised to exert our Will, show our skills, or dazzle with our desires or our goals–so sitting back while we receive some shocks from the Universe seems almost impossible.

We need to be careful, particularly in relationships and finances, that ‘unhealthy’ attitudes and emotions (specifically, those that have been denied or kept hidden, even from ourselves) don’t leak out and interfere with, even derail, conscious intentions. In fact, to be as honest within our own minds as possible is the only effective way to get a handle on what swirls around us. Wisdom and practicality offer avenues for and means of empowerment–everything else is essentially spinning our wheels.

Today’s word image is a half-smoked cigarette smoldering in an ashtray. This is actually a memory of mine, from when I was five. Someone had left a cigarette burning, perched on the edge of the ashtray, and just within reach of my infant brother’s flailing little fists (can you imagine? Nowadays most people wouldn’t even smoke in the same room as a baby!) My brother beat the air, made contact with the cigarette, flipped it onto the table, where it proceeded very quickly to burn through the varnished top. I ran for the adults, who at first ignored me, then finally responded–only to chastise me for touching the cigarette! Then began a round of recriminations among the adults: why did you leave a lit cigarette where the children could get at it? Why weren’t you watching the baby? Julie was watching the baby. You don’t have a small child watch another small child! And so on. For years after, every time I saw that burn mark on the table, I remembered the conflicting issues of that day: how I’d felt like I’d saved the day but was treated as if I’d caused the problem in the first place, and how each adult had gone to great lengths to make anything or anyone other than themselves responsible for events. The imprint it left on me was to make me feel automatically overly responsible for circumstances in my environment that were beyond my authority and beyond my control. Is there some area in your life where you have taken on a sense of responsibility, culpability, or even mission for which there is no way you should be held accountable? Astrological note: at the time of the event (I just happen to be clear on the day, as it was my brother’s one month birthday), transiting Black Moon Lilith conjoined my Jupiter, which was sextiled by transiting Mars, together making a Finger of God with apex natal Black Moon Lilith, and transiting Mercury was conjoined my natal Neptune, giving us a picture of why I wasn’t listened to or was misunderstood, how I might’ve been an easy target for blame (all that BML), and suggesting that being ignored concerning speaking out, ‘what I have to give’ (Jupiter rules my 11th) enraged me in a way I wasn’t conscious of!

What’s beautiful is also wise, or is the practical choice–how’s that for a guideline?–and we (in some cases literally) see and must deal with in concrete terms what we think, say, and communicate. That last may seem like something of a riddle, until we consider how many possible forms it can have; the one thing about it we can pin down is that our idea of our own empowerment (both reach and options) will be challenged (and so need to be modified) in the process.

By Labs1950 at English Wikipedia -[[PD}}, Photo of the work of José Bernal by his daughter Lucrecia Bernal Schneider, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=5908735

Today’s word image is a group of people, clothed in skins, gathered around a nighttime fire, passing down stories of the tribe. Tribal affinity, even more so than family, is the basic organizational structure of all civilization. We still align our lives along similar groupings of mutual interests today, through professional groups, shared interests by subject or activity, or personal characteristics, even illness. The thing to consider is that too often we identify with particular groups at least in part out of fear (the group represented by the fire light, which we see as both a means of enlightenment and a vehicle for survival through membership). It may be time to think about our tribal affinities, to make them as conscious as possible, and so to consider whether those are alliances we want to continue and so support.

Just a Little AstroEssence 18 July 2017 An Uncloudy Day

Jean-François Millet 1868 {{PD}}

All we have to do is adjust our actions and choices to accommodate our ideals and our creative urge, to recognize any tendency toward destructive or power-gathering impulses (the latter isn’t necessarily bad, though we must be aware of it to make it play positively), to utilize our unique skills and instincts, and to grasp and make the most of some very fortunate circumstances, social situations, relationships, or financial opportunities that come to us. There, that’s not hard at all, is it? Are you still reading, or have you thrown up your hands and walked away in disgust at this seemingly impossible laundry list I’ve presented? There are two saving graces, so to speak, that if followed can bring the rest of the needed behaviors into line, with little effort, in a kind of cascade effect: one, use those instincts–trust yourself; and two, a kind and loving outlook will make the opportunities and ways to benefit obvious, whereas they will be difficult to discern through a clouded, more negative lens. You can get more of what you love; just be careful how you go about it.

Today’s word image is an evocative passage from an 1896 work by Josiah Kelley Alwood, telling of what inspired his musical composition, the gospel song ‘Uncloudy Day’, with its sense of hope and trust in the Universe: “It was a balmy night in August 1879, when returning from a debate in Spring Hill, Ohio, to my home in Morenci, Michigan, about 1:00 a.m. I saw a beautiful rainbow north by northwest against a dense black nimbus cloud. The sky was all perfectly clear except this dark cloud which covered about forty degrees of the horizon and extended about halfway to the zenith. The phenomenon was entirely new to me and my nerves refreshed by the balmy air and the lovely sight. Old Morpheus was playing his sweetest lullaby. Another mile of travel, a few moments of time, a fellow of my size was ensconced in sweet home and wrapped in sweet sleep. A first class know-nothing till rosy-sweet morning was wide over the fields.”

Have a wonderful day!

Just a Little AstroEssence 17 July 2017 Answer the Question

The Temple of Vesta, by Willem van Nieulandt II 1613 {{PD}}

Are we being contrary just to feel independent, or do we actually fear losing something dear to us? Answer that question, for yourself and everyone you interact with, and you’ll have today’s energies clearly delineated.

Focus on: Vesta enters Virgo and parallels Mercury. This draws a portrait of values, priorities, and commitments under scrutiny–we think about what, where, and to whom we’ve dedicated our life energy–and we undergo a period of critical thinking that may lead to an accounting of what truly matters, and how, in the big, Cosmic sense, we want to go forward.

Illustration from “The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby” by Charles Kingsley, illustrated by Warwick Goble {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a swarm of dragonflies criss-crossing a meadow under the summer sun. Around here we usually only see one or two at a time, so a large number at once is noteworthy. I think we must split this symbol into two possible interpretations: for those who have a personal association with these little winged dragons, that will be the focus, while for everyone else, they may serve as a time marker (a moment when summer and its meaning are undeniable), a reminder of the strange delicacy of nature, or a hint at the idea of a swarm, where something is oh-so-gently being overrun in the life.
