Not quite the meeting of the Sun and Mercury. ‘Meeting of Abraham and Melchisedek’ By Dieric Bouts,the older c1466 {{PD}}

You can feel the ambition flowing through you today, can’t you? You may label it something else: restlessness, desire, passion, ants-in-the-pants, but in any case, you want to make the best situation for yourself possible–that’s what ambition really is–with the agitation caused by some slight discrepancy between the idea of our personal values that inform our Self-image, and the change to that Self-image that will be undeniable if we fulfill that ambition. How to balance that out, take advantage of the forward momentum without hurtling off the cliff? Concentrate on pursuing what’s original (for you) and unique–that is, that thing that’s having its moment right now, and that you are in the perfect position to exploit/ express; pay due tribute (but no more than that) to those in power–that brings gain; and make sure that choices, actions, ‘moves’ clearly reflect the reality situation–it’s not a day to launch projects on a whim or that are rooted in the fantastical. Take care with what you put in motion right now, as the Inferior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury brings a kind of life-generating power to ideas and starts–and that can mean that even the most casual step forward may have more seed-power than you ever think it could.

(Vesta qnx and parallel Zeus, Uranus nov Vesta, Mars trine Saturn, Venus parallel Ceres, Sun and Mercury trine NN as they meet in Inferior Conjunction)

Today’s word image is a black cat. Does it make you think of Halloween (a time when strangers can knock on stranger’s doors and ask for candy, and no one thinks it’s weird), or maybe how they’re thought to be handing out a kind of curse as they cross one’s path, does this bring a favorite real-life cat, someone you know who loves cats, a storybook one (the infamous ‘Midnight’ from my first reader!), or does it just remind you of your allergies, your dislike of cats/ preference for dogs, or do you feel an annoyed twitch thinking of how they own the internet? This is one of those very personal symbols, evoking a very personal response.

For those born with the Sun at 24 Pisces (check your natal chart for your Sun degree!) Your new Solar year starts out STRESS-FUL, but don’t worry–this is to your advantage, as this pressure cooker acts to propel forward something new and well-thought-out–even though you won’t immediately know what’s started or where it comes from! It makes the year one of longer-term gestation, with some idea or beginning growing from a spark to a significant enterprise–so, be highly conscious of what you nurture now, as it WILL grow, in spite of any confusion about its origins. You’re setting the course of your life now, and the best thing you can do is be fastidious with your investment of time, attention, energy, money, love, effort, and creativity. It’s no time to mess around.

We are still too prone to being misled, to rejecting what’s healthy for what’s practical, or embracing what’s conventionally deemed wise even when it’s not good for us individually. Two things can put us on the right track: hook ideals to creativity and imagination, to keep efforts from going in completely the wrong direction, and think on the actual reality situation as it exists right now–therein is something of genius, waiting to inspire you.

Today is also the Inferior Conjunction of Venus in her retrograde to the Sun. This should mark the ‘low point’ to any review of or stress caused in the life due to Venus’ backtrack. You can start to re-build the Venusian goals here, mostly through concrete responses that are reversible, should you change your mind on direction.

(Mercury nov Saturn, Neptune sxt Vesta, Pallas opp Hygeia)

Today’s word image is an old song, that sounds like it could’ve been written yesterday. And I quote:

“It was a slow day
And the sun was beating
On the soldiers by the side of the road
There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Wired to the radio

These are the days of miracle and wonder
This is the long distance call
The way the camera follows us in slow-mo
The way we look to us all
The way we look to a distant constellation
That’s dying in a corner of the sky
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don’t cry baby, don’t cry”

‘No Fear of Perfection’ An Astro Portrait of Salvador Dalí

Inferior Conjunction in the Natal Chart, real life astrology, Salvador Dali natal chart

By Carl Van Vechten – Van Vechten Collection at Library of Congress, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1316978

Another re-print from ECLIPSE, this time on the wildly original Spanish artist:

Born with Mercury retro, just after an Inferior Conjunction, Salvador Dalí (11 May 1904 8:45 AM Figueras Spain) spent his life as an innovative artist, so we might expect a prominent Neptune and Uranus, but the Merc retro natal point, at 23 Taurus 28 Rx, plays a big part as well. If Merc is our ability to communicate, Dali’s ability was shaped as a sense of anticipation. This is what we have in the post-Inferior Conjunction phase of the retrograde: a subliminal excitement, a shadowy coalescence of ideas and concepts, and we are willing to try things that are new and perhaps considered unusual for us—and somehow Dalí was able to translate this into his creative life, probably through the 29 degree Uranus in Sagittarius, a placement requiring expression of the individuality (and creating tension with the individuality!) perpetually.

Neptune is in the Whole Sign 1st, above the Ascendant, sextile Venus, trine Black Moon Lilith, and squared by the natal Aries Moon and Midheaven. He may have identified with being creative, but not entirely consciously. A great deal of his creative ‘fuel’ may have been women, relationships (he had many with both men and women, and met his wife Gala, 9 years older than he, when she and her husband, a poet, and daughter came to visit him—she remained when they went home). Dalí excels at delving into the material others avoided—as seen in his penchant for eyeballs, melting clocks, and the disturbing dreamscapes of his Art. The contact to Moon-MC is puzzling, until we consider that though the social sphere (Jupiter in the 10th in Aries) found him disruptive and odd (10th, ruler Mars conjunct Mercury—he was communicating), his parents, especially his mother (10th, Moon) encouraged his Self-indulgence and unusual creativity. This undoubtedly affected the emotional perceptions, with the Aries Moon emphasizing Self-Will as the way to feel emotionally nourished—and coupled with the MC, probably made him equate emotional satisfaction with fame and professional accomplishment.

Interesting to note that he was born 9 months and 10 days after the death of his older brother; given the same name and told he could never replace him, Dalí came to believe he literally was his brother’s replacement, his reincarnation. Mercury, the natural representative of siblings, is conjoined his Sun (in this case perhaps both suggesting the melding of identities and, as Merc is moving away from conjunction, the effort toward individuality and freedom). Merc rules his 3rd, representing his siblings, with Virgo there; it may have been the childhood criticism that made him who he was in a significant way—it certainly figured in his thinking.

His wife Gala may be key to so much here, in particular the extreme sexual nature, represented by Pluto opposed Ceres. This suggests his deepest sexual energy may have been at odds with what he considered ‘natural’, and yet Gala, an incredibly strong Mother Earth figure, came along and negotiated his own sexual nature with him—she was his Ceres, adjusting his sense of Self (Ceres quincunx the Sun) as well as becoming a foil for his passion (Ceres opp Pluto). Also interesting, this amazingly original and unique artist died in the period of his Uranus Return at the age of 84, at the point of a symbolic, and very real, completion of a cycle.

John Singer Sargent ‘Fishing for Oysters at Cancale’ 1877 {{PD}}

The Inferior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury occurs today, the 12th, in Sagittarius. This is a point of inception within the Mercury-Sun cycle, the time when moving in apparent retrograde the Messenger/ Trickster meets ‘the light of day’ in one form or another. The Sun illuminates our world, so that when the planet of communication appears to meet it from our vantage point here on Earth, we get a glimpse of what’s been hidden during the Merc retro period; we also see this realization, knowledge, or revelation spark the beginning of something related either to matters of the House where this meeting occurs in the natal chart, or to matters of the Houses Mercury rules in the natal chart (with the possibility that the House ruled by the Sun is also involved).

‘Les Demoiselles Schwartz’ Anders Zorn {{PD}}

Close aspects the Conjunction makes at the time of the event reveal something of what begins and/ or is discovered. In this instance there is only one, a nearly exact sextile formed by the Moon in Libra. This suggests the revelation or beginning is emotional, possibly arrived at intuitively, and involving a partner, someone you love, someone with whom you cooperate or negotiate, the Arts (your relationship to creativity), and the working out through communication of the emotional element or relationship between you. If you have a natal placement at 21 Taurus (2 degree orb either side of this point) it becomes a personal Finger of God, with the emotional discovery planting a seed within the relationship that will bring results related to the natal energy or matters of the House it rules with the Superior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury when Merc is direct (occurring on 17 February 2018, in the 29th degree of Aquarius, telling us at the very least that it may bring crisis, a ‘do or die’ choice, or bring stress already extant to a head).

The other aspect perfecting today is a conjunction of Vesta and Jupiter in Scorpio. Truths revealed, secrets uncovered, or commitments vetted and then made known publicly show us how far our real-life priorities stray from our highest ideals or from what ‘the facts’ warrant–and it’s an examination likely spurred by the social sphere and its events. Commitments are assessed; are we all in? We may find ourselves doubling down, just to make a point. Or, we may take a distanced approach, in which case we criticize society, weighing events against what we ‘know’ and our own personal standards–but taking this tack doesn’t allow for personal revelation, if we only see the need for improvement ‘out there’, rather than seeing that what happens internally is vital to shaping what we see manifest externally.

Today’s word image is a child crying alone in the corner. Is there someone sad in your life, someone you don’t recognize may be isolating themselves because of that sadness? No one should feel this lonely; do something about it.

Thank you, and have a great day!

Henri Privat Livemont – ‘La Vague (The Wave)’ 1896 {{PD}}

We’re concerned about exercising the options of our empowerment position, about flexing our status-muscles, about acting to build the future–and in having this focus, we start something entirely new. This is the promise of the Inferior Conjunction of Mercury and the Sun, coupled with the meeting of Mars and the North Node point. Choices made today will ripple out, gather both momentum and meaning, and assert themselves in our affairs as a wave, one that may have grown surprisingly powerful over the ‘distance’ it will travel. It may be important to note that this isn’t a Neptunian wave, one of creativity and emotion, but a wave generated by physical and psychic action; it’s a different kind of creativity contained within the style and preferences of those things we set in motion. Note, too, that we may not be consciously aware of the ways in which we’re asserting ourselves and our Will until things are well underway. Our disconnect may, in fact, extend to the future point when the wave makes an impact, where it takes us completely by surprise. So, the goal today is awareness of what we’re putting in motion, of the psychic seeds we’re planting, in as nuanced and far-sighted a form as possible.

Vittore Carpaccio – Sant’Orsola polyptich – Incontro e partenza dei fidanzati ‘Departure of the Pilgrims’ c1495 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is the word ‘pilgrim’. In the loosest terms, pilgrims are seekers, motivated at least in part by spiritual considerations. They are also presumed to be wandering or traveling; it’s hard to be a pilgrim staying at home. In what way are you a pilgrim, a seeker, and how conscious are you of what you seek?

And then I remembered this:

When You Are Old by William Butler Yeats

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

Have a lovely Saturday!

Your Week 14-20 April 2017 A Taste of What’s Holding You Back

‘Merchant’s Wife at Tea’ By Boris Kustodiev 1917 {{PD}}

Friday the 14th we see a perfect blending of ego and action urge with instincts, making for highly successful actions and choices as long as we go totally on those programmed and in-built inclinations. Problems arise from too much conscious attention to values and priorities; this is a time when we quite literally do best to think as little as possible, and to follow the spontaneous instinctive spark we carry within–otherwise, we tie ourselves in knots trying to make material and everyday circumstances meet a ‘purity standard’ that belongs better as an ideal.

Today’s word image is the actor John Wayne. Even when I was a child, he was considered a symbol of American values–but when we inspect those values now, we see their flaws: the embrace of Manifest Destiny, which inherently carries the idea of White superiority; the romanticization of the Western way of life, including its misogynist bent, its assumption of ‘Christian’ values as right and superior, and its lack of regard for both the best interests of animals/ the land, and the rights of other cultures, especially indigenous ones; the idea of rugged individualism, a pernicious code echoing the ‘each man for himself’, ‘survival of the fittest’ ideal which celebrates Self-reliance to an absurd degree, as well as justifying unfettered greed and exploitation, and as fuel for sanctimonious refusal to help others; the romance with guns, which continues today. It may be too much to say we should look at our own ‘John Wayne attitudes’, some way in which we are unquestioningly sure we are carrying the banner of right, or making assumptions about privilege due–it may be enough to look around for and make note of where these ugly Western assumptions may still permeate our thinking, our beliefs about ourselves, our country, or our way of life.

Venus goes direct on the 15th, at 26 Pisces 54; this sends it back toward a re-perfection of that square with Saturn. We get a last taste of barriers, restrictions, obstacles, or required discipline–or we see the cost of those restrictions, or the cost of not having applied them, or what we’ve lost by following (or not following) ‘the rules’, especially as it pertains to relationships. This may present a last, bitter pill, or could show us the difficulty associated with getting what we desire, and though tough, could be the point of delivery–it’s all dependent on previous experience with this square, and the individual impact through the natal chart, especially the unique relationship of each person to the Saturn concepts (which generally dictate whether the retro period represents a ‘taking away’ or an ‘opening the way’).

There’s also a perfection of a Juno sesquiquadrate to the North Node, which on the surface might not seem like much–but when we combine it with the Venus-Saturn effect, with Venus finally leaving her retro phase, we may find, especially if we are female, that empowerment options and circumstances that should help us build our desired future will not be easily exercised. We may find that the patriarchy, the establishment, authorities, elders, or rule-enforcers put obstacles in our way, or try to suppress or stop us. Gaining empowerment is possible, as long as we are willing to work around or be flexible, in terms of those demands or restrictions being made on us.

Today’s word image is a hand-tooled leather bridle. As lovely as the workmanship on one can be, a bridle is essentially an instrument of control, one that works because of the pain it causes (via the metal bit to the sensitive mouth of a horse or other animal). Is there some external control, applied by someone else, that you’re allowing, out of fear of pain if you don’t? What freedom have you allowed to be ‘bridled’, willingly or not? Have you been indoctrinated with the idea that certain behaviors aren’t allowed, that it would be uncivilized (or unladylike, or unmanly) to indulge in them? What’s allowing someone else to ride you–that is, keep on top of you or your performance, in some way–and so control you?

On the 16th we surf an unusually smooth and pleasant minor ‘wave’ of harmonies and sychronicities. Values aid the operation of instincts, actions and choices utilize our most unique skills, and cooperation, especially cooperation between complementary elements (anima and animus, man-woman, assertive and receptive, yin and yang) flows with little effort. It all comes naturally, with the result being that we find the energy and spark to handle what we’ve been ignoring or denying, and in doing so find our personal empowerment options strengthened and elevated.

By Paolo Monti – Available in the BEIC digital library and uploaded in partnership with BEIC Foundation.The image comes from the Fondo Paolo Monti, owned by BEIC and located in the Civico Archivio Fotografico of Milan.This work is free and may be used by anyone for any purpose.

Today’s word image is a single blue balloon, floating up and away from a crowd. That is one of the saddest sights, I think, because it means some child lost their hold; that precious, fleeting pleasure of balloon ownership is, for some probably distraught young one, no more. I find the temporary nature of a balloon part of its appeal; like a flower, you know it doesn’t have a long life–and the fact that they float and fly has always made them special, too. What short-lived pleasure in your life has recently expired? Did you ever think it might simply be practice for enjoying in the moment, and letting go?

By the 17th the real world, as it is right now, is in our faces–and if we handle issues willingly, openly, we find opportunities plentiful and our ability to act unhindered. The issues revolve around deception (by others or our own of ourselves), reality as it is, rather than as we’d like it to be, and how healthy our choices are, at this time; if we can be straight with ourselves over these matters, we will find our personal effectiveness goes beyond anything we’ve been imagining, and that opportunity and support from the social sphere are attracted without any special effort on our part.

Today’s word image is a spider that dangles from a single thread of spider silk above the head of an unsuspecting individual. If you’re afraid of spiders, this might give you the heebie-jeebies–and nobody, frightened of arachnids or not, wants a creepy-crawly in their hair. This may alert us to something undesirable that is ‘hanging over our heads’–and yet we don’t know it, or are not conscious that it poses such a ‘threat’. Maybe the solution is to ‘look up’–or maybe just look around carefully, to be more aware of our surroundings at all times.

On the 18th we once again see personal power aided by our ability to allow our instincts to call the shots; too, thinking is in line with, and attention is on, the future, allowing us to consciously guide things in the direction we’d like to go. So what’s not working? Wounds around relationships and finances may derail the entire day, unless we are able to set resentments and fears aside and simply listen to the internal pulse of call and intuitive response, without letting negative thoughts intrude.

Today’s word image is an empty closet. You’ve got nothing to hide, right? Or is this a reminder that you’ve got plenty of room, some place clean and ready to hold your things?

By I, Manfred Heyde, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2325855

On the 19th what we have previously ignored now gets our full attention–and in providing that, we gain in wisdom, practicality, and our ability to affect circumstances. The world is our oyster–and we are poised to start a fresh ‘pearl’, via the Inferior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury–which is precise about 11:01 PM Pacific time, and occurs just after the Sun’s entry into Taurus. This suggests that the seed planted here may be a physical one, the start of something materially significant, the beginning of a project, idea, or condition that has a material impact, or one involving the senses or sense-perceptions. Just a few hours later, on the 20th, Pluto retrogrades at 19 Capricorn 23, and soon thereafter we see Merc shift back into Aries. This subtly alters our retro period thinking; we change from considering material matters, comfort, and consequences to the potentials behind action and Self-responsibility. We start to consider that we are the ones who can do something about ‘it’. As a backdrop to this, Pluto’s change in apparent direction may simply emphasize the darkness, or the destructive tendencies, inherent in the forces of evolution, transformation, and change. Pluto’s retrograde gives us new appreciation for how close we may be standing to the precipice, and how much more carefully we might want to move–or giving us the urge to either back away to safety, or to jump.

Today’s word image is a pair of sleeping dogs. Do we ‘let them lie’, as in the saying, or are they not performing as they should, barking when trouble approaches? Either there’s a topic not to be touched at present, or an early warning system is down.

28 December 2016 The Capricorn New Moon: The Big Bang

The Astro and Lunar Essence: We enjoy a New Moon in Capricorn at 10:53 PM Pacific time at 7 CAP 59, but it’s not the only activity we need to note. This New Moon conjoins the Sun-Mercury Inferior Conjunction (the meeting that occurs when Mercury is in the midst of the retro cycle) with this tying the NM beginning into the action via the sextile of Mars and Merc, Merc’s conjunction with the Sun, and the Sun’s integral part in opposing (and creating) the New Moon phenomenon. As well, there is an emphasis on action, choice, and what we as individuals can do or make happen–and this builds toward, and then likely finds expression through, the New Moon moment.

The fact that the New Moon falls in Capricorn suggests that what begins may be either constructive/ positive, setting something solid in motion that allows for the establishment of a new beginning, or that it may signal restraint or an ending, with the Sea Goat’s conservative and cautious nature put to work in our own best interests as we refrain from, or put an end to–and so set something new in motion.

The NM is of course still sextile Mars and approaching sextile to Neptune; it’s also roughly semi-square both Black Moon Lilith (remember, that’s a point, rather than a body) and Venus (which places the NM at their midpoint), and semi-sextile Hygeia. These contacts are, in the larger scheme of things, relatively minor–and yet they accumulate their modest effects by gentle pushes to the ether, this way and that. The result is that what begins now is creative (though don’t assume that’s positive! or that it comes in a traditionally recognized creative form) as it feeds on both matters ignored or denied, and on those health issues (mental, physical, spiritual, emotional) that are nibbling at the edges of our consciousness with worry or the soon-to-be undeniable recognition of some health matter that must be addressed. Right now, though we likely become aware of these issues, we aren’t forced to move on them–that point likely comes later, at the Superior Conjunction.

And, with the coinciding of the NM with the Inferior Conjunction, we see a moment in time where what begins may be larger than we realize, and we’re fortuitously offered a timeline along which we can expect at least a partial result, with the Superior Conjunction (when Merc is once again direct and meets the Sun). This can result in our own version of the Big Bang as something that coalesces now reaches a point of intensity that brings bigger-than-the-sum-of-its-parts results with the SC of 5 March. We should note the Superior Conjunction occurs midway through Pisces, giving the events a dream-come-true potential, or one of unreality or deception.

‘Lady at the Window’

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘In A Sunlit Home Domesticated Birds Sing Joyously’. Considering all the other contacts in play at the time of the NM, this implies that what occurs may bring something out into the light, creating an opportunity for Self-expression and peace within the ‘home’ of the individual (internally or within surroundings)–but the word ‘domesticated’ suggests this is done with passions or forces that have been ‘tamed’, rather than with something new–and this implies that the new start may grown out of mastery of the Self, the environment, or one’s already adept qualities or abilities.

(Mars parallel SN, semi-sq Ceres, and sxt Mercury, Vesta sesq Juno, Saturn sq Chiron)

new-moon-in-capricorn-28-december-2016

For those born with the Sun at 7 Capricorn: You are poised between acting (which may be rash or out of anger) and creating (which may be inspired or confused)–and the best way to choose exactly how you will use your energy should be determined by what supports your health best in all its facets. Looking out for your well-being is the key to solidifying your authority and your place in things (your status). Once you choose how to go forward, you’ll find yourself re-thinking what was–but be bold, embrace your choices, and don’t allow regret to cloud what could be a year full of achievement. Good luck, Cappy, and Happy Birthday!

‘The tennis party’ J Lavery 1885 {{PD}}

The AstroEssence: we may spend a lot of time thinking about health, and doing what we believe it takes to make us healthy; this should be seen in the broadest terms, applying to all areas of life and all expression. In addressing ‘health’, we may run into a number of dilemmas and conflicts, small and large, that may point out to us just where we’ve brought negative conditions on ourselves. We should be as consciously aware as possible that our thoughts are based on our beliefs, and guide our actions, and that thoughts are 1) less reliable than usual due to the retrograde, which means we are likely to miss something we should take into account or consider, and 2) turning our attention a little too much toward those in authority and those who have dominion over us, and our attempts to express may include digs and resentments we don’t really know we’re including, and 3) responding at this point in time to influences that will be setting up what will play out through to and culminate at the Superior Conjunction (late October). Know that in addressing matters today, you’ll be setting up the circumstances of ‘health’ (or its lack) for some time to come.

'Lilith' John Collier 1891 {{PD}}

‘Lilith’ John Collier 1891 {{PD}}

A special note on the South Node trine Black Moon Lilith: we shouldn’t forget that this is a relationship between two measured points, ‘energy spots’ relative to and determined by the movement of other bodies–and as such, the effect may be more like an echo we catch rather than as with other aspects, which are more like a river we are standing in. Past shames, angers, and failures may haunt us, suddenly, briefly taking on life, pointing strongly toward the potential for re-visiting those same transgressions now. The point, I think, is to prompt us to resolve to do better, not to make us dwell on what was, which is, by virtue of the aspect, presented to us with a life and strength it no longer holds. They’re just memories; remind yourself, you know better, now (SN trine Black Moon Lilith, Chiron qnx Hygeia, Mercury sq Mars, parallel Jupiter, and conjoined the Sun in Inferior Conjunction, with the Sun also sesq Ceres)

Today’s word image is an out-dated computer. I really hate to go with the obvious, but this could just signal some ways we currently still employ to work things out that may be well past their relevance or prime. Merc retro is all about refurbishing our thinking; that may be something to consciously attend to today.

For those born with the Sun at 20 Virgo: you may spend the year incubating new ideas, new approaches, new plans–is there any reason not to implement them as soon as you come up with them? Yes, though this may require something like a balancing act: gaining some mental distance from what’s proposed, at the same time as you are putting the most preliminary steps in motion. I know, not easy–but it will be rewarding if you’re willing to walk that line–the result could be an almost indestructible position, and an ability to act on what you know that almost guarantees success. Good luck, Virgo, and Happy Birthday!
