Anders Zorn ‘Scared’ (etching) 1912 {{PD}}

Everything may seem scary right now; we feel vulnerable, menaced both by our wounds and those things summoned by the imagination, giving us the sense we’re being pursued and that there’s nowhere to hide. Two points to help you deal with this: attention to and scrutiny of wounds can actually reveal the way to permanently heal them, and the material world may present some risky or harsh but very wise or practical ways to approach what comes forward today. It’s a matter of not allowing ourselves to get so distracted by fear or anticipation of disaster that we miss the very smart opportunity or the healing element right in front of us (Neptune contra-parallel Sedna, Saturn semi-sq Hygeia and trine Pallas, Sun nov Chiron).

Paul Klee ‘Der Goldfisch’ 1924 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a kitten dipping into a fishbowl, angling for a goldfish. Are you engaged in something that’s purely a part of your nature, that to an observer might seem a wee bit barbaric or mercenary? Are you following urges at the expense of civilized co-existence? Does it feel like you’re just “hungry”, and doing what comes naturally? Is someone accusing you of thoughtless or heedless behavior? Does what you think of as ‘the natural order of things’ make this urge ‘right’, or is containing natural urges an important thing for you?

We can shape things as we like today, with our values and commitments offering a form into which we pour the essence of our energy; it’s pure creativity, without the need for an Art or a singular creative act to give it contours. We are both the source and the means of conveyance, with thoughts perfectly synchronized with action, and choices truly reflecting reasoning and the intellect. That said, we may find ourselves resistant to what’s smart or practical (I suspect it won’t feel original enough for our Soul-essence), and our fondness for and awareness of our own empowerment may put us at odds with the facts, with our own beliefs, and/ or with the social sphere–but otherwise, it’s a day when we can manifest so much that is at the core of our Beingness, in one form or another (Sun nov Saturn and parallel Vesta, Mercury sxt and parallel Mars and square Pallas, Venus and Juno conjoined and square Jupiter).

Today’s word image is finding a note in your jacket pocket that reads, ‘Save me’–and you don’t know where it came from or who wrote it. Where does your mind go?

All that we’ve gathered of worth from the past, as well as our relationships and those ways in which we give or Love, are the mechanisms behind what happens today (Venus parallel the South Node). Those Venusian viewpoints and subjects flourish (and that can feel positive or less than), even as we keep a solid connection to the real-world situation, likely through irritations, obstacles, or small discomforts we must work around or accommodate (Venus semi-sq Saturn). The great thing is we have lots of arrows in our quiver: our values and commitments show their worth and keep us on point (Venus parallel Vesta) and encourage a healthy, balanced approach (Venus conj Hygeia) that supports attaining ambitions and desires (Venus trine Zeus), and we’ll also sense the advantage in facing what we might otherwise turn away from, deny, or meet only with temper (Venus and Hygeia nov Black Moon Lilith). That addresses our attitude, but here’s how it might translate into action: impulses may need to be curbed, actions slowed for sufficient consideration, as we’ll either feel guiding wisdom may need modification or we’ll simply resist what’s practical and smart (Mars quincunx Pallas). We have the right foundation and sensibilities for moving forward, but our judgment may be skewed–keep that in mind today, and slow your roll, so that reason can moderate or overcome impulse.

NASA {{PD}}

Today’s word image is someone who puts something up for sale, but then refuses to sell it, even when offered exactly what they say they want. Is there someone in your world claiming to offer something, then not producing when it’s accepted? Do you feel like it’s a bait-and switch? Do you feel the person is honestly conflicted, or duplicitous? Or are you doing this, and not even aware you’re doing it? Sending such thoroughly mixed signals to the Universe is a real problem; for best results, get all your intentions on a single wavelength.

Are you pursuing ambition fulfillment, or pure Power, or are those one and the same for you? Today we see how vital possessing and wielding power is to our own satisfaction, and we see precisely how close or far away we are from realizing full throttle empowerment. Hints for making the most of today’s influences: Be optimistic and look for opportunity–at the same time, remain aware of the darker side of things, and of the pitfalls and dangers of a one-note approach; let the facts and the current power distribution offer guidance as to what will work best; be creative, but refuse to be deluded or deceived; and finally, use your real-life past for what it can tell you about dealing with barriers or obstacles (Juno trine and Pluto square Zeus, Saturn semi-square Juno and novile the South Node, Mercury parallel Pluto, Sun parallel Jupiter).

18th century French clock face {{PD}}

Today’s word image is: from an antique clock that no longer works, the wind-up key suddenly ‘jumps’ out of the keyhole. This actually happened (we saw the key leap to the chair below!) and wondered: what is going on? The clock is set to the time we got married (the ‘I dos’ were at 4:10 PM), and of course there’s that old saying, ‘Even a stopped clock is right twice a day’, suggesting that even the most wrong things can inadvertently, once in a while, actually be right. But my thought is this: a key is useless for a clock that can’t be wound and doesn’t function. So what thing that seemed vital (a key to something) will prove itself unnecessary, and so be removed from the scene (the key ‘jumping’ from the clock)?

Lunar Eclipse 31 January 2018 Emotional Intelligence

‘Moon Over Dresden’ By Johan Christian Claussen Dahl 1826 {{PD}}

The Lunar eclipse of 31 January 2018 occurs at 5:27 AM Pacific time at 11 Leo 37, just two minutes past exact conjunction to asteroid Ceres, and acting as apex to a loose Finger of God with base of Black Moon Lilith (which is a point, of course, not a body) and Neptune; the Full Moon is also sesquiquadrate Chiron, but everything else is outside the orb for a Lunar event, even when that event is an eclipse.

Falling in Leo, the Full Moon suggests a completion, ending, or the consummation of something related either to the House matters in the individual chart where the eclipse occurs, or to the identity, the lion’s roar that makes a statement about who we are, and particularly about where our heart lies (Leo rules the heart). We are, then, at the time of a Full Moon, full of feeling, and this time that’s about ourselves, and how we fit into the emotional landscape.

An eclipse is an extreme; this one is apex to a Finger, which points to a blending of the creative, imaginative, spiritual, or delusional with those matters too long ignored, denied, or that have enraged us, with the result being the Lunar event, the Lunar extremity, the culmination or revelation with who we are at the center of it all. Facing what we’ve avoided in a creative way, or with a spiritual viewpoint, shows us who we are, especially emotionally; we could say that this Lunar eclipse reveals the state of our emotional intelligence, setting the stage for our responses through the coming six months, to the next Lunar eclipse.

The Lunar event happens conjoined Ceres, suggesting that the event itself is an experience of our own strength, the extents of our authority, or involves the overseeing of others or the negotiation of a particular situation. Ceres also implies the potential for the eclipse to bring a health related event, such as an allergic reaction; we see Ceres prominence right now with the virulence of the flu in the US. Ceres always speaks of power and Nature, and the relationship for the individual between the two; in this instance, the Lunar event carries this message within the Leonine expression that arises from Black Moon Lilith (the ignored, avoided, denied, or enraging) and Neptune (inspiration, the spiritual, the creative, the confusing, the deceptive).

Nature might make a statement at the Lunar eclipse, something concerning those things we’ve ignored or denied (climate change, anyone?) and what we’ve created of a Neptunian nature (to include pathogens fostered in a lab or inadvertently in an ever-warming environment). This may signal the rise of the seas, even though it will play out over time—or it may say that we might finally connect emotionally (the Moon) with Mother Earth in a meaningful way, one that moves us to save Her, emotional intelligence of another kind altogether.

Add to this a difficult aspect to Chiron, symbol of our primal wound, and of those gifts we possess that can offer healing to others (and since 2012, to ourselves, as well). The tension of the Finger, shown by the quincunxes, is channeled into the Lunar response, which itself is in conflict with something of a Chirotic nature: our wounds, someone else’s wound, or the deep need to share a healing skill, which may not be acceptable to others (this latter reflects that dynamic where someone has an issue, says they desire healing, but will not let go of their wound—often it’s too much a part of the identity, and in this case, the feeling nature may gain its sense of shape, depth, and even personal relevance—Leo–from this wound). Or, the exercise of creatively dealing with what we’ve avoided may unavoidably cause wounding or pain, to ourselves or others. In some way the wound impacts the Lunar expression, which is one of power or its lack, or of the relationship to Nature. It’s nothing short of what weaves us into the world, the Cosmos, ourselves as much a part of Nature as what we observe outside us.

Oda Krohg – ‘A Japanese Lantern’ 1885 {{PD}}

The Sabian Symbol for the Lunar eclipse is, ‘An Evening Party Of Adults On A Lawn Illumined By Fancy Lanterns’. This is a symbol of a kind of luxury, the freshness of a summer lawn, lanterns in the darkness, the company of other mature individuals, the sense of earned respite and relaxation. The scene carries a quality that may transport an adult back to childhood, or foster romantic sensibilities; in any case, the implication is that life is going well enough that the struggle can be set aside, at least temporarily, that Nature can be appreciated in a state (darkness) that we usually avoid—so in that way, suggests harmony with the environment, and a sense of security that allows us to move outside normal parameters. In the context of the Lunar eclipse, this might imply that whatever comes forward here makes a kind of statement about the individual (Leo) and their place within the natural order (Ceres), and that this is dictated by that interplay of Black Moon Lilith and Neptune, potentially drawing the Lunar result from the individual temperament (BML) and the spiritual orientation (Neptune).

With a Full Moon we also look at the Sun’s Sabian: ‘On A Vast Staircase Stand People Of Different Types, Graduated Upward’. As the body that generates the light that creates the Lunar phases in the first place, the Sun symbol offers hints as to the origins of the Lunar event. Here we see a kind of representation of humanity, with the implication that we are evolving ever upward (no matter how it looks down here on earth!) The staircase, of course, invokes the hackneyed metaphor of life as a climb, each step a movement upward, to a more advanced position—but that isn’t how life works—every step doesn’t take us up, it may not even take us forward—so this symbol may at bottom question suggest we set aside our assumption that we are ever evolving upward. We are ever evolving, true, but the path isn’t a straight one, so we should dump the metaphor in favor of just accepting the ride, rather than trying to measure how high we stand on the staircase.

And what about all that hyperventilating about the rarity of this Full Moon?

Yes, we’re on the verge of an eclipse, and we all feel it, one way or another: the tidal pull of Earth’s only natural satellite plucks at the oceans of our own bodies, putting internal pressure on past hurts, primal wounds, relationships, and makes us hyper-aware of the repercussions of our own actions. It’s smart to pay attention to those things we might normally dismiss or gloss over; it’s also smart to listen to instinct, and that ‘still, small voice within,’ as Edgar Cayce used to say. Giving attention to both will inform our thinking and reasoning, and that’s really what’s needed: an openness to what hasn’t been said, to what we and others are considering doing. Laying open the pathways between the unseen and the assumed, the thoughts and prior wounds, and the ego and what we’re denying or angered over will give us a more than modest advantage over those who proceed as if the surface is all (Juno nov and Mars parallel Black Moon Lilith, Chiron sxt Sedna, Venus nov and the Sun semi-sq Chiron)

Today’s word image a room where it’s snowing inside. Look for the obvious incongruity, the misplaced activity or element, even the nonsense part of the situation, and don’t just nod and accept it–challenge it.

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida – ‘El baño, Jávea’ 1904 {{PD}}

The ocean of life looks calm today, but that’s a mental illusion, a trick to make you wade in unguarded. When you’re chest-deep what you find is that Love is a reality, as solid as any material object, the result of (or is that in response to?) any action, and the realness of it draws us back, either to re-live a past emotional state, to recall it, maybe to mourn it, or to hide in our past delusions or fantasies. Just know that while you’re playing the Love game, riding Love’s emotional currents, you may get caught in the undertow, swept back to the past, and so miss what’s going on right now, real-time, on today’s very solid shores (Venus conj SN and nov Saturn, Mercury semi-square Neptune).

‘The Last Respects’ By Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1886 {{PD}}

Today’s word image: You look out your window, and see a big, black, shiny hearse pull up in front of your house. What does it make you think? And what do you feel? Do you assume it’s there for you, stopping for directions, or for some purpose that falls somewhere in between?

Jan Sanders van Hemessen 1550 {{PD}}

The mental faculties are aligned with the instincts, successfully accessing all that we ‘know but don’t know’, accurately perceptive of the real world, and so capable of offering ourselves and others the healing that can come through words or disseminated ideas. Share your thoughts, and put this unusual clarity to good use (Mercury trine Sedna, parallel Saturn, and sextile Chiron).

‘The Goldfish Seller’ By George Dunlop Leslie {{PD}}

Today’s word image is something fishy. So maybe an actual, literal fish, or the image or symbol, acting as a synchronistic mechanism alerting us to the importance of the current moment–or to something ‘fishy’ (suspicious) in our environment or interactions.

‘The Church at Volendam’ By Elizabeth Nourse c1910 {{PD}}

We feel such a light inside, such a sense of harmony with our own essence, that it’s kind of remarkable how we passive-aggressively resist authority, and how we speak in spontaneous and original ways that could spark real conflict. The best approach may be to enjoy our own light and warmth, and to honor it; it may be that bowing to others today, or restraining ourselves within socially acceptable limits, could bring out the rebel in us, whether we actually dislike cooperating or not (though take note: it could be an excellent day to earn or influence by exerting your charm). There’s nothing less productive or less kind than needless revolt; go ahead and bask in your own sun, even as you must refuse to see the existence of or assertions of others as automatically encroaching on your liberty (Venus opp Ceres, Sun parallel Venus, Merc sq Uranus).

Drake Brookshaw, Artist, ARP (Air Raid Precautions) {{PD}}

Today’s word image is an ambulance arriving at a non-emergency. Does this suggest someone is overdoing it, or responding as if the situation is critical when it’s not? Is this an image of panic, alarm, or over preparedness? Or is this about being equipped to handle the worst, and remaining responsive and ready? It may be a prompt to measure both our preparedness and our propensity to treat mundane circumstances as emergencies, and adjust according to what we find.

Mars enters Sagittarius and we want to have an impact: far-reaching, on things far away, on beliefs, and on the facts, with the latter either relating to changing those realities or on giving them a ‘cover story’ that aligns them more closely with what we believe. Under this influence, the facts might seem more aggressive than usual, insisting upon themselves in a way that could raise our ire, anger the ego, expand our viewpoint (whether we are willing or not), or drive our choices, and leave us little room for fantasy or supposition–and that’s a good thing, the way Mars through Sagittarius may force alignment with a real-world picture that is inclusive of what’s foreign to us, and so something we need to learn about.

{{PD}}

Today we also see Venus semi-square Chiron and Neptune quincunx Ceres; we notice all the ways our values, relationships, and financial arrangements set off our wounds or call forward our unique skills, and we may find later, when looking back, that our own imaginations were what kept us from fully exercising our prerogatives. That means that, though clear sight is always our goal, right now that’s prevented by our own inclinations. We mesmerize ourselves into believing we are less (or less capable) than we truly are–that’s a spell that needs to be broken as soon as possible.

Today’s word image is the color green. Green suggests newness, or an untried quality, or one lacking training. Fecundity might be implied; what new in the life, what thing just begun, or just now growing, what untried ideas or efforts, need to go forward? Or is it jealousy or envy, giving a Venusian name to behavior that can otherwise be confounding?
