The New Moon in Cancer occurs at 4:01 AM PDT of the 4th at 12 degrees 53 minutes, and the most striking feature of the event is that it forms a loose Mystic Rectangle involving the Sun-Moon/ Earth axis, which includes Mercury conjoined the Sun-Moon and Pluto conjoined the Earth, and the Nodal axis which also has Neptune conjoined the South Node and Jupiter conjoined the North, though with our normally tight (2 degrees or less) New Moon orbs, not all of those bodies and points would be considered in aspect to some of the others. A configuration is able to pull in things that might not otherwise be considered in contact by its sheer power of connection (that is, the power of each part is amplified by being part of a configuration; it’s as if being part of a pattern extends the orb of each body–or maybe we should think of it as the pattern pulling energies into play by proximity to one of the config’s elements). With the Mystic Rectangle formed by this New Moon, a kind of synergy is added to what begins or is seeded: whatever’s born arises from the convergence of a number of factors involving what we care about (Cancer) vs. what exists right now (Capricorn).

The ease with which these various combinations meld and then amplify is what the Mystic Rectangle is all about. There’s Neptune-South Node in Pisces=we either create from the past or use something imagined or created in the past, or we find that past imaginings were illusions, fantasies, or deceptions; Pluto-Earth=material changes, or changes to what we count on or find familiar, to the structure of our lives via both the concrete and rules, boundaries, restrictions, or a transformation or destruction of the ‘real world’ landscape; North Node-Jupiter=opportunities for the future, optimism about the future, or something learned or conveyed (facts) that shape the future; Moon-Sun-Mercury=what we care about we think about, and it acts upon and is acted upon by the other parts of the configuration. The overall picture is one of creative response to change that teaches us something, or from which we learn, and this creates future opportunities, even creates the future itself. Be aware: the tendency may be to live too much in our heads, to see an idea coalesce and then believe we ‘have done’ merely by the thinking. This is a NM that offers a great deal of mental ‘fodder’, but that will support material new starts, even more completely and thoroughly than we might think.

We should note the wide, separating quincunx of the New Moon to Saturn=this may lend an aura of ‘too late’ or unreality to our ideas and efforts–but this is an illusion (Saturn sq Neptune). The Sun is also parallel Venus today, suggesting there’s gain to be had in simply being conscious–and that’s good news. The NM is also in wide square to Zeus, and with Pluto-Earth, forms a tense T-square=the ambition and desire picture may make or break the material changes we allow to come forward–and that means this could be the pivotal issue that decides what precisely in our world changes, as we measure all potential alterations against how well they serve the ambition and desire picture.

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘A Hand With A Prominent Thumb Is Held Out For Study’. In palmistry the thumb seems to indicate flexibility and Willfulness of the individual; in a cultural context, we might say it suggests a certain disrespect of others (thumbing one’s nose at something) or a signal that one wants to be ‘taken along for the ride’ (hitchhiking). But the thing that might be most important about the thumb is that it is our ‘opposable digit’–that is, the placement of the thumb in relation to the other fingers offers us as a species an enormous advantage, and is said to be the reason we dominate the earth.

So what does this mean for the NM? The fact that the thumb is mentioned as prominent implies that what begins at this point may be more a matter of Will and skill, combined, than of anything else. Too, the hand is being ‘held out for study’, which echoes involvement of the Nodal axis in the Mystic Rectangle, and may signal the importance, the future-determining ‘stuff’, that the New Moon events will bring. No matter what, it does point to the Self-determining nature of the events and our reactions to them; whether we are Willful or flexible, disdainful, or just going with the flow, we have to admit that it’s our choice, with how we fare resting firmly in our ability to exploit our most unique capabilities and skills.

Our New Moon daily word image is a man standing on a beach, being circled by a large dragonfly. I observed this, and haven’t been able to light on a definitive meaning, though it’s ripe for a few jokes (he’s the ‘Mother of Dragonflies’, for instance!) I finally decided that what it really ‘says’ is something about our interconnectedness with Nature, that we are far more part of the picture at a fundamental level than we consciously realize, just one element in an elemental world. Notice your own interaction with Nature today, especially in any ways you might hold yourself apart, recoil from contact or reality, or see yourself as ‘above’ other life forms; if you have these kinds of reactions or thoughts, they will point directly to areas where you are lacking realistic awareness of the natural order (which is, in essence, a place where the playing field is absolutely level), or where you have somehow removed yourself from it.

I wish someone would yell at me when I forget a Moon event chart–finally, here it is!

Your Weekend 2-3 July 2016 An Instinctual Picnic

Saturday our thoughts and communications have something beautifully instinctual about them; be sure to really listen to yourself and to others, as the unconscious perceptual nature makes itself and its wisdom known, and that means there are no stumbles if we’ll simply pause to hear what’s really going on (and which way we should go–the instincts are dead on with that!) Even with the potential for scenarios requiring adjustment (either to the material situation and/ or to what we think we know), we find that the instincts will serve us if we’ll just give them some attention (Mercury nov Sedna and trine Pallas, the Sun semi-sq Sedna and qnx Saturn)

Sunday presents a radically mixed (and so confusing) bag: on the one hand we may find that things we’ve said and done in the past may hamper us now, and the reality picture seems to not only contradict our highest values and priorities, but to actually impede us in exercising our status (that’s a wide net that generally covers circumstances where we would normally be empowered to act but for some reason can’t). Add to this the potential to be mislead, even mightily deceived, and we could feel there’s nothing we can count on. Contrast this with the way creativity and opportunity are spread out before us like a picnic; we are offered rare, nearly guaranteed circumstances for future success, and if we can keep our heads screwed on straight, and find creative venues that suit our specific, unique sensibilities, we can give that dream, the really big one, a reasonable chance for manifestation (Juno sesq SN, Saturn contra-parallel Vesta, Jupiter parallel NN, Mercury sesq Mars, Sun trine Neptune)

The titling on the picture reads: “THE HOME-COMING OF THE BRIDE Having at last found a cavern that promises well as a dwelling-place, the male Scorpion leads his bride into it. Next morning the cave has only one tenant” But they don’t say which one! Photo by P. H. Fabre CC BY 4.0

This weekend’s word image is something my husband observed this morning and shared with me in an email: “I stood behind a woman at the bus stop this morning who had a Scorpio tattoo on her toe and then, when the bus I was on was driving through downtown, it stopped next to a car whose license plate said WTRSIGN.” We may be dealing with action and choice dictated both by the need for conscious change (Mars in Scorpio) and those matters ignored, denied, or that enrage that may be driving us from the unconscious (Black Moon Lilith, also in Scorpio), and individually we may look for this effect in matters of the natal Houses that hold Water signs. Expect strong emotional reactions to be the initial signal, pushed by a psychic ‘wave’, that mental or physical change is underway–then watch which direction following those emotions may take you.

Have a wonderful, safe, and restful weekend, and to all in the U.S., Happy Independence Day!

Gain is possible in many forms today. ‘Earthbound’ Evelyn De Morgan 1896 {{PD}}

We gain, we get opportunities, we profit, we get more (or better) simply by being willing to face what isn’t working within the ambition and desire picture, particularly the ways in which our goals are causing conflict or upset to others (Zeus in Libra). A clear-eyed look at where we stand will take some nerve, especially since the reality picture may be making it abundantly obvious in what areas we aren’t powerful or in charge; our natural response may be to feel sorry for ourselves, then go out and try to prove the Universe wrong, but we benefit much more by acceptance of what the real world is telling us. We need the feedback of the concrete world, because our thinking is too easily clouded now by those things we’ve tried to ignore, gone out of our way to deny, or that have gotten under our skin–and that means hyper-reactivity is a danger, even for the most sedate among us. We may also see many efforts in many forms to stop or control Nature–not a good idea. To review: opportunity abounds and we gain if we assess ambitions and their effects ruthlessly; note what the circumstances of our reality are telling us, but don’t take them to heart; don’t resist Nature (or Time, for that matter); and keep in mind that the more buried material we carry, the more touchy we may be–and that can definitely affect our judgment at this time (Saturn sesq Ceres, Venus sq Zeus and sxt Jupiter, Mercury trine Black Moon Lilith)

Today’s word image is a sound: the hoot of an owl, without seeing one. We’re hearing what’s smart, what’s wise, but we may have trouble taking it in, as we’re either unsure of the source or we are ‘believe it when we see it’ types. Consider that wisdom is wisdom no matter the origins, and to expect visual ‘proof’ of the rightness of things before we’ll implement them may be just slightly unreasonable.

We start Dark of the Moon around 4 AM Pacific time of the 1st. It’s a time to allow for silences and the sounds of Nature, to retreat, to rest, relax, to be open to meditation and contemplation. Have a wonderful, laid back Friday!

30 June 2016 Focus On: Venus Opposed Pluto

She comes within orb, and he has an effect, like it or not. Frederic William Burton 1863 {{PD}}

Let’s look at the opposition of Venus to Pluto: falling across the Cancer/ Capricorn axis of the individual natal chart, we may see within a matter we care about represented by one or both of those Houses a threat to what we value, to a relationship, or to a financial source; these will be challenged by circumstances of change, transformed before our eyes or without our consent, or promised obliteration or re-birth, all to force us to re-define some Venusian facet as experienced through the House where Venus currently transits. We should expect change in terms of the rules in force with, the structure that supports, or the material manifestation of, the Venus matter. We may see this as a measure of how much we care, as a kind of test administered by an authoritarian, cranky Universe, but that would be a misperception; what we’re really experiencing will be the stripping away of sentimentality surrounding these Venus issues, which comes about through those unavoidable challenges.

That means that what occurs offers us a chance to see the Venus matter fresh, and to then take a new, more realistic approach as this expression of Venus is reconstituted or resurrected in a more practical or disciplined (Capricorn) form. It’s a given that this event (whether it is a long, subtle unwinding or an abrupt and permanent rending) requires the probing of areas and relationships we’d like to ignore or that make us very angry. We will specifically explore those areas we have deemed sacred, to which we’ve dedicated our life energies, turning over every stone as we look for the slimy thing or the spidery impulse beneath–and what we find plays in to our response to the Plutonian effect on the Venusian subject. Yes, we will uncover some ‘bad’ as we go, some less-than-flattering notions about Venus, what we care about, and how we show that caring–but it’s all in service of seeing our Love, our Money, or our Values in a more appropriate, and much more honest, light (Vesta sesq Black Moon Lilith, Venus opp Pluto)

Today’s word image is a black moth. A moth can be a little freaky, so overtly hairy, with wing patterns that often look like eyes–but when we think about how we glorify the butterfly and disdain the moth, we have to admit they are much more similar than not. The difference is a moth is seen as destructive, eating our woolens and infesting, stripping, and killing our trees, and so we allow ourselves to focus on their ugly features, rather than emphasizing the attractive qualities as we do with the butterfly, which doesn’t threaten anything at all.

So is this symbol one that asks us to recognize the beauty in what’s destructive (how very Venus-Pluto!) or does it point out that the differences between what we judge to be negative and what we judge to be positive are not as great as we think? Or does it simply show us that our assessment of anything is entirely based on how it affects us, and our senses simply follow that assessment, seeing the harmless as beautiful, and the destructive as evil, when an objective view might be that both fit in to the larger whole in a complementary fashion that we may or may not understand.

Most everyone is focused on, celebrating, or tensed for the Mars direction, and with good reason, especially this cycle, with Mars turning just as he receives some harsh regard from the Sun and some covert stimulation from the Underworld; there’s bound to be a little acid splash, as Mars in Scorpio creates change (Pluto) to what we put our attention on (the Sun), and does it with a stinging, deadly seriousness, a ‘now or never’ opportunism that threatens permanence to either alterations or status quo (Brexit, anyone?) It’s enough to make people leap when they’d be rather smart to look, first. But the good news is that this period will be the peak of this effect; from here on the impulse to fling acid in the figurative face of our nemeses will dissipate quickly, as will the impulse to act in order to feel we’re making an impact, or in a desperate effort to exert control. Until we’re out of the shade of these combined contacts, we’ll likely be looking to the past for reward, for sustenance, and for companionship, and we may be longing for ‘the good old days’ in some way that allows nostalgia to override the realities of the past.

One other thing informs our thoughts, briefly but sharply: we see an effective way to empowerment, and this occurs under duress. Whether it’s the pressure that churns the mind and agitates up an idea, or whether the status forces a choice that itself creates pressure, the result is that we find a good way to extend our reach, to enhance our standing, or to have the kind of influence we desire (Mars stations direct sesq the Sun and parallel Pluto, Venus trine the SN, Mercury trines Juno at 29 degrees of their respective Air signs, then enters Cancer)

‘A Friendly Call’ William Merritt Chase 1894 {{PD}}

We have access to wisdom, and skills are on point, and both may be available through ourselves or others; thinking aligns with values, and our empowerment options seem to line up with those areas where we already hold power and with willing aid from authorities or highers ups–so where’s the problem? It may lie in a certain, very specific vein of thought that is decidedly unhealthy for us, possibly shown by the less positive side of our natal Mercury by sign and aspect.

Whether the issue’s signified by the return of an old habit, a new ‘bad practice’, or a negative emotional turn, our mentality can run in an unhealthy direction, and we may be prone to excuse it, or not even spot it, so that it is able to take significant, destructive hold. Trust those with whom you have a shared mental outlook to be able to tell you what must go; all you need to do is ask (Juno parallel Ceres, Merc sq Hygeia and parallel Venus, Sun trine Pallas)

Please note: tomorrow Mars stations direct, and will be sesquiquadrate the Sun and parallel Pluto. Assertive energy that’s not ‘claimed’ or sufficiently employed may be looking for a place to express, and where it lights it may be destructive, as the tendency will be to see what needs change, what draws our criticism, and to sic our Martian energies on it. Tread with care, as the force of release is bound to be too enthusiastic and somewhat clumsy–and Mars is always best when we find a productive, positive target, and let it loose at that.

Today’s word image is a witch. What does that mean to you? For some it’s a childhood character that doesn’t exist in real life, for others it’s a blasphemous label, for still others it’s an older term for those who practice Wicca, while others may not think of this as a person so much as a kind of curse, something hurled, especially toward a crone, to show disrespect and to take another’s power by naming–if you can spot a witch and call her out, the belief is she’s somehow then helpless. Which of these you relate to may say something about your own views of and relationship to the idea of elemental power and perception–and about what powers, in yourself or others, you may reject due to fear.

The wonderful thing about today is that the creativity flows, imagination pays in astonishing ways, and relationships live up to our ideals; too, a sense of being powerful in some area that is clearly our province is supported by our thinking, and generates ideas. We are able to use past successes to inform the now, tapping into creative capital, with results surpassing our expectations. So what might stop these miracles of progress? Our own mentality, if it is focused too acutely back at ourselves, if it is mired in past injuries, or if we are acting from a sense of woundedness–then we might see forward motion at an inexplicable halt, and find ourselves wondering if there’s anything we might do about it, which takes us back to that creative energy: it might need to be employed to once more tune in to the Love all around us, to set us back aright (Ceres nov SN, Venus trine Neptune, Merc sxt Ceres, sq Chiron, and parallel the Sun)

Today’s word image is a crown of pearls. We all have these just hanging around, waiting to be worn, don’t we? Pearls are the only gem created by a living creature, and as symbols of purity, have often adorned wedding garb or been involved in the ceremony–though a pearl as an engagement ring is said to be bad luck, as pearls have also been linked with tears (sometimes described as the tears of angels)–and pearls were a way in Medieval Venice of telling the ladies from the courtesans (nobles 1, prostitutes 0). So, pearls, and their form is a crown: not only the topmost Chakra, but also the thing worn by royalty, the ultimate symbol of a reigning monarch’s power. This symbol may be about tapping into our own highest, purest power, a spiritual manifestation of our integrity, connection to and honoring of the divine–which suggests a link to Vesta, currently at 18 Gemini–and though still within range of square to Jupiter, trine to Zeus, and quincunx to Pluto, rapidly moving away, implying a sense of  losing anchors related to the social milieu, our own ambitions and wants, and the change we want to see occur. It may be time for re-consideration of our current position, especially as it applies to our beliefs and our status, in light of changing times; align yourself consciously with your highest values (that is, crown yourself with pearls!) and you’ll know where you stand.

Joaquin Sorolla – ‘Las Tres Velas’ 1902 {{PD}}

That’s the essence of it, this weekend: aspects offering ease in opening doors, for making fortuitous choices and change, ease in transforming knowledge, contacts, or assets into a material form or opportunity we have long desired (or perhaps that we have intuited as correct for us), and this is accomplished through attention to detail, through understanding the social milieu in which we move, and by having a clear understanding of what currently exists in the now (for how can we effectively change something if we don’t see it as it really is?). When faced with realities and having the desire to create change, at this time we are best off if we are flexible in our demands and parameters concerning relationships and/ or finances–a temporary ‘down’ or restriction is just that, temporary–and if we have a willingness to trust instincts and to modify the assertive urges of the ego to be, well, somewhat less aggressive; adoption of these measures can bring about little miracles–or at least, positive surprises and small, astounding leaps ahead–and can set the stage for making precisely the kind of significant progress and alterations to life direction that we are all striving for (Jup trine Pluto, Venus semi-sq Sedna and qnx Saturn, Merc qnx Mars and sxt Uranus, Sun nov Sedna)

This weekend’s image is a clown hitchhiking by the side of the road. What matter in your life that is in some way indefinable or troublingly obscured is asking you to ‘pick it up’? What’s hiding behind a genial mask, trying to engage you? Girl with a pomegranate, by William Bouguereau 1874 {{PD}}

‘Girl with a Pomegranate’ by William-Adolphe Bouguereau 1874 {{PD}}

Contrariness may be the order of the day, but as long as we don’t play identity politics (feeding on or reacting from stereotypes, especially ones concerning female-male dynamics) and don’t insist on picking at what’s better left alone, we’ll be fine–in fact, better than fine, if we do these things: Look at those hidden depths, ignored issues, and things that make you angry, just don’t touch; and truly honoring (through thought, word, and action) our ambitions and desires. And, refuse to live within the wound–it’s just not the place to be (Vesta trine Zeus, Chiron contra-parallel Hygeia, Venus sesq Mars, Mercury sesq Black Moon Lilith, Sun trine BML)

Today’s image is a whole pomegranate. We know this as the fruit that kept Persephone, still a mortal, in Hades for 6 months after she ate 6 seeds while visiting the Underworld; that suggests there’s something in our world, should we willingly ‘partake of the fruit’, that will bind us in our own Hell, obligating us to spend time in a presumably less-than-comfortable environment or forcing our awareness of something that to us is tortuous. We are told that Persephone ate because she was hungry, so, presumably, we may find that our appetite for something may bring more problems, or keep us stuck in place, in a way we never anticipated.

František Kaván – ‘The Air of Home’ 1894 {{PD}}

Let’s just say, we’ve got our sh*t together, but the social order just isn’t supporting us. We know just what we should change, we are feeling centered and sure of our power as individuals and as unique Beings, and yet . . . our ambitions and desires are squelched within the social arena, one way or another. We might also be short-circuited by those who put their own expansion first, or who feel we must ‘learn’ something (or really, probably acknowledge their supremacy in some area we have aspirations in) before we proceed with the opportunity that is right in front of us–but their reality doesn’t have to be ours.

As long as we are willing to align our behavior with our highest values and standards, to ‘invest’ in relationships, and to act as stewards of our assets (that is, to use what we have and what is under our control with consciousness of the implications of our choices), we can trust our own thinking concerning ambition fulfillment–and go forward, joyfully, from there (Pluto qnx Vesta, Uranus conjoined Ceres, Jupiter contra-parallel Zeus, Venus trine Pallas, Merc trine Zeus)

Tip for the current Moon in Aquarius: if you’re puzzled by another’s emotional reaction, find they (or you) don’t seem to be having one, or see yourself or another rationalizing what otherwise might be upsetting, then you’re witnessing the influence of Moon in Aquarius. Just remember that the most common result is confusing feeling and thinking, and you’ll do well in sorting it all out.

Today’s word image is a gardener breaking the peace of a beautiful summer day with his weed whacker. Of course, the person or thing creating the disturbance, symbolized by this image, will be different for each person. We have to ask ourselves a couple of questions about what might be bothering us: is this merely an irritant (to be ignored) or is this a serious disturbance to us? Is this thing that’s bothering us actually the byproduct of necessary action? Is it simply someone making a lot of noise, for their own reasons? And do we have the power to stop it? If the answer to that last question is No, then we need to find a way to live with whatever is getting under our skin–so defining it, by seeing just what it may be accomplishing (or not) is a good start.
