A little something from ECLIPSE:

10 AM PDT the Moon conjuncts Venus in Leo. This could make for a pleasant get-together, though it might be safer, because of Mercury influences (and more satisfying) to sit in front of a mirror and notice our own beauty, and to assess our own worth–if we do this we will feel very good when we get done, and perhaps remind ourselves of how many good qualities we really possess.

Be aware as you make your way–‘The Path to Granollers’ Ramon Marti i Alsina c1870 {{PD-Art}}

9 July even as relationships offer us a chance to fulfill ambitions they seem to get in our way, or demand something that takes us off our Path; our reactions to this will be more important than we think, likely laying the groundwork for real changes to both life direction and who and what surrounds us. Take care; a seed can be planted here that could have huge emotional consequences, and could cost us, Love or Money, down the road–but at the same time, we may see significant fulfillment of goals and ambitions, or decent payoffs from previous efforts–and there’s no way to tell which will be the result of our choices, right off the bat. (Venus square the Nodal axis and sextile Zeus, Sun conjunct Mercury in Inferior Conjunction)

New Moon in Cancer 8 July 2013 at 12:14 AM PDT at 16 Cancer 17

The Cancer New Moon is conjunct Mercury, which is moving backward in preparation for Inferior Conjunction with the Sun on the 9th, is square to hZeus, trines the North Node, quincunxes Juno, and trines Chiron, which with Moon-Sun and NN outlines a Grand Water Trine that will very much influence the unseen, felt portions of our lives. The meeting of Sun and Moon each month pinpoints a time of germination, new beginnings and ‘fresh’ energy dedicated to the sign in which this occurs; with Cancer this suggests that beginnings arise out of how much we care, out of our desire to nurture, out of emotional plenty or ‘starvation’, out of a ‘new’ or ‘gut’ feeling, or out of intuitive knowledge, and with this latter we may or may not be conscious of what motivates us.

So, we are moved to foster something–but what? This time, we may be preoccupied (even obsessed) with some idea or thought that arose pre-Merc retro, and this seems to us to need nurture, as well as tweaking so that it delivers maximum empowerment and irons out any wrinkles related to our ambition and desire scenario–perfect for Merc retro, right?–and this all feels very important, as we are aware of how expressive this idea is of our desired life Path, and that fulfillment of this could (we believe) lead to significant healing of old wounds. How truly viable is the idea? we may ask–and the answer is, if it relates to subjects of the House where the New Moon falls, then it is not just viable, but has already germinated–and now we must give it proper conditions so that it can flourish.

Even if the idea doesn’t begin to grow (if we find, for instance, that our idea really isn’t ready, or upon reflection doesn’t carry the promise it once did), there will be something new that emerges from the House where the New Moon sits; it’s just that it won’t be that idea we’ve been kicking around and considering, but instead will be a new idea or opportunity–and with this, we must take care, allowing it to develop through the Merc retro, after which we should begin to assess and plan in earnest, with our ‘expected delivery date’ the point of Superior Conjunction, 24 August.

The Push-Pull of the Tides: Uranus Retrograde, Saturn Direct

Saturn goes direct evening of the 7th Pacific time, at 4 Scorpio 49, and Uranus, stalling out at about 12 and a half degrees of Aries, retrogrades on the 17th. This may feel a little like shifting tides; we’re just realizing something has lifted and loosened (Saturn) when the tension of the Uranus turnaround becomes apparent. A Uranus retrograde seems to manifest in chaotic encounters, accidents, and uncertainty, always very close to the actual retrograde date (typically only a day or two before and after, at most). I’ve observed tension at the retrograde point of other heavyweights, but Uranus seems to be different: we really do seem to be plunged into a kind of confusion when he withdraws, with a much higher chance of inattentiveness, carelessness, and even, if I may be so dramatic, betrayal (this latter showing in abrupt and often bewildering changes to our role within the group). Be aware that just as what was holding us back seems to ease, we encounter a kind of riptide, not always discernible to the observer, which is why we’re so often taken by surprise, and overwhelmed, when we swim into its path.

If either of these planets is in hard aspect to a natal point or body at the time of turnaround, the associated energies, as well as any House ruled, should be watched; with Saturn, we look for clues as to what might progress, and where we might feel a removal of impediments–or, for those like me, who actually find themselves with restrictions lifted when Saturn is retro, we might see a slowing and inexplicable halt to what seemed to be sailing along just fine–while with Uranus it’s about the unexpected, with caution in related areas called for. In any case, it’s a chance to get a little bit of a jump on what could become trouble areas–and those not into astrology will swear it all comes ‘out of the blue’.

A Look Back: Egypt’s Morsi

‘An Arab Caravan Outside a Fortified Town in Egypt’ Jean-Leon Gerome c1900 {{PD-Art}}

This originally appeared in ECLIPSE just after Morsi’s election on 30 June 2012–thought it was worth another look now:

The new president of Egypt, Mohamed Mohamed Morsi Isa al‐Ayat, was born 20 August 1951, ntk, in the Sharqia Governorate, in northern Egypt‐‐since the birthplace is not pinpointed, and the province itself rather small, I chose the capital city, Zagazig Az‐zaq. Morsi’s rise is meteoric only in the sense of his arrival on the world stage; he was a prominent member of the Muslim Brotherhood, but gained the globe’s attention when, in the wake of the Egyptian Revolution, he became the candidate of the newly formed political arm of the Brotherhood, the Freedom and Justice Party. Now, with his election to president, Morsi brings unquestioned loyalty to the Brotherhood and their beliefs to a previously secular post‐‐and, having seen other instances where religious figures rose to political power within the Arab world, the West watches and waits to know the direction its one‐time ally (Egypt) will take.

Public life may be a challenging road, one that fills personal ambitions for Morsi, if he can continue in creating the illusion that he has so far‐you’ll see why I call it an illusion in a moment. He has Jupiter, his relationship to and attitude toward the social sphere, in aggressive and independent Aries‐‐right away he may have problems in the social arena, if he doesn’t get to be the leader! With the exception of one aspect, Jupiter is harshly contacted‐‐but oh that one aspect: it’s a trine to Pluto, suggesting that a powerful leadership position is just the thing for him, and easily attained.

The other Jupiter aspects, though, tell the rest of the story, with the most startling perhaps being the sesquiquadrates to the Sun and Juno, which create a Fist of God with Jupiter apex=if he can mesh the identity‐Soul needs with his empowerment options (which are in some way at odds with the Soul, my guess being that his Leo Sun would simply prefer to be dictator!) then he will actualize the potential leadership role‐‐done and done. Sun, hZeus, and Pluto are all conjunct in Leo, in fact, painting a portrait of someone power‐hungry and focused on acquiring that power for the Self‐‐the Fist, and so the public, simply becomes a way of fulfilling personal goals. Jupiter also is quincunx Mercury (adjustment to speech and writing is necessary for harmony with the public) and square Uranus (the individuality and urge to uniqueness and rebellion were easily channeled against the previous regime, but really want to express as total independence from having to answer to those who put him in place‐‐we must remember that Jupiter is also religion and religious hierarchy). Jupiter also opposes Neptune, placing it firmly (and possibly literally) in opposition to ideals, and we note that Neptune rules both the North Node and Ceres, suggesting a fundamental rejection of both what is ’natural’, and of the future; this is a ‘live in the moment’ guy.

Saturn, which would logically make a significant appearance in the chart of someone strongly involved with a religious hierarchy, barely shows up, here sitting at 00 Libra, so that the idea of hierarchy, discipline, rules are all ’new’ to him; and in Libra, the philosophy presented was likely one of co‐operation, where following the rules and Self‐discipline are not just sacred, they define one as a man (sextile to Mars‐Vesta conjunction). Morsi recognizes the wisdom of this (Saturn trine Pallas), yet justifies his own use of sincere religious principle to further his own wants as required payback for past injury (Saturn square Chiron).

Astrologically speaking, Morsi appears to be an individual who has fooled (or maybe just used) the Muslim Brotherhood for his own, power‐hungry ends; but will this marriage last? Without House cusps, it’s very hard to say, though from the transits, I’m thinking the honeymoon might last awhile, though not indefinitely; Jupiter is in Gemini, soon to square his Nodal axis, signaling that ’people talk’, and though not enough to bring him down, information or gossip propagated now may sow the seeds of his eventual fate. t Chiron is conjunct the natal NN right now, suggesting that his use of very personal and specific skills have led him in his destined direction. t Pluto is moving to oppose natal Uranus, and t Chiron to trine it, suggesting that, as long as he can downplay the individuality urge, the rebelliousness within him to the Brotherhood (because for him it’s all about him, not any kind of religious ideal), and promise healing to the masses, he’ll remain in place. Having attained a pinnacle with the presidency, the vaunted Self‐regard and insistence on doing as he pleases shown by his Sun‐hZeus‐Pluto conjunction will not allow him to ever back down or let go.

t Neptune’s upcoming contact to natal Saturn by quincunx says that Morsi may successfully obscure his own goals or create an illusion that satisfies others, but it will take effort on his part; however, t Pluto trines the natal SN once again in January 2013, possibly stirring those old power urges and prompting a grab, and around August of next year (2013), t Jupiter conjuncts natal Uranus‐‐with this meeting we may watch as his individuality is ’seen’, by religious leaders, or by the masses, and considering that t Saturn will have recently squared natal Mars, reality ’threatening’ his manhood, we may see some fireworks, rebellious behavior, radical responses, or a ’beginning of the end’, as it seems to me a violent finale may be inevitable for this ambitious, would‐be dictator (that Sun‐hZeus‐Pluto natal conjunction in Leo, a human powder keg to which someone, probably himself, will eventually set a match).

Today’s Lunar essence, from ECLIPSE:

9 AM PDT July 1st the Aries Moon squares Vesta. Our highest values are in conflict with our feelings–we must ask ourselves why. It’s likely a matter of poorly defined priorities and assumptions that just shouldn’t be. Void begins at 10:42 AM PDT; the Moon enters Taurus at 2:43 PM Pacific time. It’s 5 PM PDT before the Taurus Moon makes its first aspect, a sextile to Jupiter. We are optimistic, especially about our assets and skills–make sure they are as fit and abundant as they seem, before giving them away. 10 PM PDT the Moon squares Ceres and Venus, sextiles Neptune, and opposes Saturn. Reality may seem particularly harsh, and we may seek escape only to find authorities block our path. This is our own resistance to dealing with our reality reflected back at us–if we accept our own power, and so our own responsibilities, we can see a dream or two come true, or gain some reward, in the near future–otherwise, whatever we indulge in is gonna cost.

29 June relationships and financial situations may test our innate wisdom. Watch for these, as they may present in unexpected forms and unanticipatible ways, and so take us by surprise–which may serve to convince us they’re anomalies, not really challenges to our values–but they are. (Venus semi-square Pallas)

30 June  Suddenly, we are on point: wisdom grants us empowerment, and we take possession of our own significant store of power and authority. The only problem may be a lack of awareness of true material conditions. If you need to negotiate, you can easily win, if you are conscious of just how much innate authority you carry, but anything to do with the distribution of or decisions about physical assets should wait until later, as these may have hidden significance not realized at the time. Well, if you find my pessimism off-putting, now’s the time to stop reading! Or you can call it realism, and go on. The past two days or so, something has been in the air, and now that I’m looking at the chart for Mercury’s turnaround, I see what it is: Merc began to backtrack in the 6 AM hour Pacific of the 26th, coming off pursuit of Vesta, the only close aspect at the time a sextile to Sedna–and even that doesn’t perfect. Couple this with Venus’ stress at the end of Cancer, then today’s entry into Leo, Jupiter’s flight into exaltation in Cancer, and two oddballs, Vesta sesquiquadrate Neptune, and Uranus opposed hZeus while Chiron quincunxes it, and we see some interesting dynamics expressed. There may be a lot of ‘defending of the Faith’ when that is precisely the subject that needs examining; whatever it is that we’ve been (rather desperately) insisting is sacred is exactly what needs to be dragged into the light this Mercury retrograde. Venus in Leo gives us the strength to examine it without falling apart–unless that vanity is part of the problem. Jupiter allows the social sphere to play the part of kindly showing us what needs fixing, if we’ll only pay attention, as functions performed will include dispelling illusions about what we revere and shocks concerning ambitions and desires that poke at our primal wound and make us unreasonable (aside from the way we should be listening with our spirits, rather than with our minds, due to the retrograde). It makes for some confused and angry individuals, and a great deal of defensive blather even when no one is attacking. The best advice, perhaps, is that when you are bitten for trying to help, don’t take it personally.

25 June Jupiter enters Cancer. This can be a very soothing transit, and can make us feel that the social circle can be a nurturing and comforting place, and/ or that we can find solace and a home in a foreign environment, in educational venues, in teaching others, in religion–in whatever your mass opiate is–but it can also urge us to over-soothe ourselves, with too much comfort food, sleep, or anything else that knocks us out into that blissful baby-just-finished-a-meal zone of contentment and inattention. Not a bad way to approach the Merc retro, considering how tense we might otherwise be, so try not to schedule anything where being sharp and feisty is a requirement.

There’s a Finger of God in effect with apex hZeus and base of SN-Chiron. Entertaining hurt from the past will keep us from fulfilling our desires and ambitions–it’s that simple.

Capricorn Full Moon 23 June 2013: ‘A Birth Is An End’

‘Birth of the Virgin’ Jan de Beer 1561 {{PD-Art}}

The Capricorn Full Moon occurs at 4:31 AM Pacific time at 2 Capricorn 09 of the 23rd: ‘A Birth Is An End’

A Full Moon is a culmination, a gathering together of influences and experiences, a time to draw conclusions and for events to draw to a close, at least symbolically. It demarcates an accumulated result of what has come before–but this time, what we must notice is that all endings, all culminations, also represent new beginnings–and that reinforces the idea that, really, there is no ‘end’ or ‘beginning’, only points at which we are able to draw conclusions from the continuous stream of our experiences. This FM aspects Saturn and Neptune (by sextile), Ceres (by quincunx) and Jupiter (by opposition), and suggests that what concludes is an illusion within our reality, possibly of our own power, influence, or position within the social circle. This may be disappointing or enlivening, as we come to see we are not bound by the image or restrictions we thought we were; but we may miss the birth of the new, so busy are we looking back at what was, at what has ended.
