'Amor Holding a Glass Orb' van Everdingen c.1660 {{PD-Art}}

Let’s look at one relatively misunderstood representative of love, the asteroid Amor. In an historical novel I read years ago, there was a scene that perfectly illustrates the kind of misunderstanding that can surround Amor contact. Set in late Medieval France, the story involves a young man, traveling, who is invited to a noble’s table for dinner. The noble has an impressionable young daughter, who instantly develops a crush on the handsome stranger. She expresses a desire to learn new things, particularly to learn Latin, so that she can read many of the available texts. He volunteers to give her her first lesson; anyone who’s studied Latin knows that you begin with the verb ‘amor,’ to love. As he instructs her at the dinner table, “Amo, Amas, Amat,” she mistakes his use of the verb, reading into the situation that he chose it to send her a message that he’s interested in her as a paramour. From his point of view, he was simply beginning at the beginning, with no hidden meaning or implication. This is very much like asteroid Amor in one chart in contact with a placement in another’s chart: it feels like love is coming from the Amor person, and indeed it is; but how good are we at distinguishing the essence of love offered from romantic and/ or sexual interest? That’s where the difficulty comes forward.

There’s also the question of just how Amor expresses in the chart of an individual. If it represents love in its most elemental form, then this energy might drive each of us in a very particular way, linking in to the chart and showing how we try to get, process, and express Amor ourselves. And who needs love from the world more than a performer, and especially a comedian? The chart of SNL cast member and unlikely movie star, the late Chris Farley (15 February 1964, 3:34 PM, Madison Wisconsin), shows this well. Amor is at 28 Virgo in the 3rd of communication, suggesting both a likely outlet for and a likely conduit through which to receive the energy from the outside world; his need to give and receive love was the need for continual interaction and communication. Amor opposes the 9th House Moon (the broadcasting of emotions) located in Pisces, perhaps suggesting that the emotions have difficulty separating through appropriate boundaries (and certainly pointing toward a possible emotional reason behind the drug problems), with Cancer on the 12th reinforcing this and adding the idea that Mr. Farley let his emotions run wild and undifferentiated at his own peril (through the ‘serve or suffer’ mechanism of the 12th). The only other aspect made by Amor is a trine to Vesta, suggesting that the impetus behind his reaching out was fueled by the feeling that love in its basic sense was sacred–and that he acutely felt violations of this, not only personally but in the Collective–and as we know, no individual who feels the Collective pain can carry it alone without serious consequences.

From the section on Amor in THE ASTROLOGY OF INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP http://dogandsunflower.wordpress.com/ we know that the real meaning of Amor is often directly confused with romantic love; Amor is actually (and here I quote the book): ” . . . a love that’s unconcerned with sexuality or romance; it’s pure, and as such will be heavily colored by the energies with which it connects in both the individual chart and cross-chart.” So, when we’re looking for love, we are indeed looking for Amor, but when we’re looking for romance, we should be looking elsewhere–this is well-illustrated in the book by the comparison of Amor aspects in the charts of one-time spouses Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett; we see specifically that Amor may have persuaded them there was more romantic depth to the relationship than there was, a classic case of mistaking one love energy for another.

It’s important to note that having Amor contacts is both supportive of and very good for a successful relationship, but they must be accompanied by romantic contacts if there’s to be sexual chemistry, or even romantic feelings. If you’re presented with an opportunity for romance, check the relationship of natal Amor between the charts, and look at transiting Amor as well; if transiting Amor is prominent in one or the other chart at present, it may be that the sense of love is diffuse and focused on humankind, rather than in romance. In this instance we may be feeling the Amor radiating from another, but mistaking it for other, very personal energies. We can check for romantic contacts between the charts to see if this will just be a pleasant encounter (T Venus contact to natal placements), a hot sexual (or even violent) dalliance with likely little future potential (T Pluto contact, possibly to N Mars, ASC, or Venus), an interaction where one or the other party projects ideals or illusions (T Neptune to N Venus in the chart of the individual), or a long-lasting love match of the first order (positive contacts between natal placements, plus strong Saturn contact from each chart). Obviously, there are other combinations that show potential relationship, as well, but the distinction between Amor and romance and/ or sexual interest must always be sorted out.

The Essence for the Weekend 19-21 August 2011: Be the Rock

Moon in Gemini, Moon in Taurus, My Daily Astrology Diary, My Weekend Astro Diary, The Astro Essence

Weber c.1899 {{PD-Art}}

The 19th

11:30 PM PDT the Taurus Moon squares Vesta, requiring we measure our feelings against those things we hold sacred; if we’re not respecting what’s most important to us, we’ll be made aware of it now.

The 20th

10 PM PDT the Moon quincunxes the North Node; we are either re-vamping our plans or berating ourselves for not making a better effort. Remember, a willingness to adjust our current position is the key to using, rather than bemoaning, a quincunx. At the same time, the Moon makes a square to still-retrograde Merc. This will probably cause us to second-guess ourselves, and we may wonder, are our feelings right, or are our thoughts correct, in reading the current situation? The answer is: neither, with the best approach one that lets go of any need to define circumstances.

The 21st

4 AM PDT the Moon conjuncts Sedna, and we undergo a period when we’re emotionally unmoored; just let it happen. Be the rock and let the water of time flow over you–the feeling of just not knowing will pass.

Today also sees the formation of a Fist of God with a base of Mars/ h.Zeus and an apex of Neptune. The scenario is of the need to act on the almost primal desires of h.Zeus–and if we do, a stressful Neptunian situation is the result (and note that stressful is not negative, but rather denotes tension that could be negative or could be excitement). We could institute a dream, get lost in a delusion, connect to the Collective, or receive tremendous inspiration to the Higher Mind–IF we act on that ambition or desire impulse. The nature of the impulse determines the nature of the Neptunian response–it’s really that simple.

The Essence for 4 August 2011: The Tiniest Void in the World

Moon in Libra, My Daily Astrology Diary, The Astro Essence

There may be some time when we're at a loss for what to do. Toulouse-Lautrec 1897 {{PD-Art}}

By 5 PM PDT the Moon quincunxes Sedna, and we lose our previous clarity (if that isn’t totally ironic during a Merc retro); best to just relax into it, and refuse to demand answers from the emotions. There’s a long gap where we may feel a mite lost; final aspect of the Moon in Libra is a 3 AM PDT of the 5th trine to Neptune, which may reassure us that we haven’t lost ‘it’ at all! Void is so minute in this instance, we’re going to pretend it doesn’t exist–it’s fractions of minute at most, and so too tiny to worry about.

Venus also squares Jupiter today, possibly bringing optimism to a bursting point, and perhaps pitting our values against what the social order demands. Those with whom we’re in relationships may balk if we claim our freedom or may give us a hard time about expanding our world; conflict may occur over assets (Taurus) and identity (Leo). This will feel like it has all the earmarks for success and yet something spoils our ‘big deal’–just don’t let it be our own unloving attitude.

What the Universe is Made Of

This is what I wrote last week about this past Sunday:

“Just after noon of the 31st, the Moon trines the North Node–and at about the same time the Moon also forms a loose Fist of God with a Moon/ Sedna square apex Pluto. The entire picture is one of unanticipatable material events (Sedna in Taurus) that have emotional results–and, contrary to the usual, we do not need to work out the square before Pluto is accessed–this time, it just happens. A Plutonian event can be anything that involves an exercise of power–just keep that in mind. It’s not necessarily a trauma, destructive act, or experience of rage–it could as easily be a transformative event that feels like a major blessing–so be ready for anything.”

I had no way of knowing how very true this would be for me. I experienced an unanticipatable transformative event, through another’s generosity and kindness. I don’t have specific permission to write about this, so I’ll keep things vague; it concerns a subscriber, an artist, who came to Seattle and invited me to meet with her. I and my daughters have been fans of her work since long before I started the blog, but it so happens that she found me, in a synchronicity of the Universe; I went to the meeting (as she was here on business, I knew she would have her work with her) planning to (and excited to!) buy a piece. Her work has a balanced, resonant, living quality that is both vibrant and serene; it contains that juxtaposition in a careful blend of delicacy and proportion that has always spoken to me. Small pieces of hers were some of the first real Art I’d ever bought–and now I would get to meet the Artist, and she liked me, too–I was going into the meeting ‘pre-approved,’ so to speak! which mattered to me; I’m not terribly good at meeting others, my youthful ease in making friends now replaced in late middle age by some distress: do I look all right? What will I say? Despite my chatty nature online, I have difficulty with small talk in person; I’m a get-to-the-point-er, with little capacity for graceful, cogent exchanges. She greeted me warmly, accepting and open, and that was gift enough.

In the course of working as an astrologer, I’ve received a number of presents, lovely expressions of gratitude and generosity: flowers, spa products, hand decorated boxes, handmade cards, all easy to accept as we judge them as small, a gesture rather than a sacrifice. So it made it especially moving for me when the Artist offered me the very piece I’d spotted and fallen in love with the moment I looked around; I wanted to buy it, but she made this perfect, simple piece a gift–and it challenged all my ideas of who I am, what I could accept from another, and what I deserved. It was especially touching to me in that we had spoken briefly about the difficulty of making a living in these times; I wanted to offer her the support she had been offering to me–but she rose above material considerations and gave me an invaluable gift of spirit. Through her amazing generosity she signaled an absolute faith and trust in the Universe–a statement of fearlessness about her own situation that says to me she is on the Path to transforming her life in amazing ways, and that gave me a gift much larger than the one I held in my hands. It’s been several years since my own faith in the Universe was tested through stress and fear; it was a wonderful reminder of the kind of positive energy that things run on, after all.

Have you ever experienced a gift or interaction that served to transform you, or that reinforced your positive beliefs about the Universe? How did it change your life? I want to say ‘Thank You’ to the Artist–and you might want to thank the one who gave to you, too.

The Changing View of What’s Manly

An especially well-written and perceptive assessment of the way popular culture’s view of vampires may be muddying the manly waters, and why Don Draper of ‘Mad Men’ has the vampiric appeal that ‘boy’ vamps lack.

The Essence for 29 July 2011: A Moment of Universal Enlightenment

9:30 AM Pacific of the 29th the Moon creates a Finger of God by sextile to Sedna with apex of North Node. There are all kinds of theories that say we have no business considering the transiting NN in configurations, but I beg to differ, as what I’ve observed time and again is that energy ‘points’ can be very telling–and I think this is one of those times. This may show as a sense of being emotionally lost–and if we can embrace that, rather than becoming panicked or demanding answers, we will be shown ‘the way’ (NN). Sounds like a Universal moment of enlightenment :)

Void begins at 11:21 AM PDT as the Moon pulls away from sextile to Sedna. The Moon enters Leo at 11:16 PM PDT; that leaves us with a massive Void period, when just about anything may come forward. The only clue we have is that the Moon is Void in Cancer, suggesting that whatever happens, it arises from feeling and intuitive response.

Here is a most unusual picture: 'Freyja, Cats, and Angels' You figure it out. {{PD-Art}} Blommer 1852

8:30 AM PDT sees the Moon square Sedna and trine the South Node; even when we’re unable to pinpoint our feelings, we are able to draw from the past, from memory at all levels, and move in the right direction. Next comes the Moon’s quincunx to the Sun, 10 AM-ish Pacific, and the effect may be like having a bright light shone on matters–we’ll see just how we need to adjust, especially emotionally. At this point the Moon effectively forms a Finger of God with the Sun’s sextile to Juno in Virgo. Here we see the need to focus on empowerment and the scenario that will allow us to express our sense of personal authority; once this is in our sights, we will feel a strong ‘hit’ of intuitive power and emotional clarity. Excellent.

Adept astrologer Elaine Kalantarian offers us this perceptive re-telling of the Skeleton Woman story, applicable not just to the eclipse for which this was originally posted at Blue Moon Astrology

The Essence of the Lunar Eclipse, 15 June 2011: The Power of Nature

Lunar Eclipse, Moon in Sagittarius, My Daily Astrology Diary, The Astro Essence

With this eclipse we will experience the pre-verbal power of our own nature. Fearnley c.1830 {{PD-Art}}

1:13 PM PDT of the 15th is the Lunar eclipse at 24 Sagittarius 23, with the Sun/ Earth-Moon axis conjunct the Nodal axis (Earth and Moon conjunct the North Node) and a T-square formed to the asteroid Ceres (at 26 Pisces 17), symbol of Mother Nature, of natural power and authority, of agriculture and growing things, of negotiation, and of mothering/ nurturing, and Mars is quincunx the Full Moon/ Earth conjunction, as is the asteroid Sedna, indicator of our ‘blind spot.’

The aspect picture is unusual in that we have a culmination that essentially challenges us to push forward with even more,exceptional energy that is rife with a sense of authority (Ceres), that requires us to modify our approach, actions, and efforts (the Mars quincunx), that attempts to nurture what’s important (Ceres), but that is fundamentally lacking in consciousness of the Self (the Sedna effect on Moon–the unconscious and the feelings–and the Sun–the identity)–a very tough aspect picture indeed. So, we will feel the push and pressure to put ourselves forward, to claim authority, to enact our Will, and yet will be without something so vital that it is literally the first differentiation we make as living beings; we experience our first Self-consciousness, our initial sense of ‘I,’ when we realize that Mommy/the  maternal figure is actually a separate Being from ourselves–and it is the moment before this realization that we will re-experience with this Full Moon eclipse.

This means the eclipse opens for us a kind of view into our primordial consciousness–and because this is pre-verbal, essentially experienced through feeling and sensation, the most likely funnel will be the Ceres placement, as it sits in the Pisces abiogenesis. Through our relationship to Mother Nature (so, through our senses, perceptions, and bodies, as well as interaction with the natural world), through a circumstance of negotiation (likely where emotions, rather than reasoning, should drive the discussion), through the act of nurturing or mothering or being mothered, or through dealing with our own or another’s given authority (the kind that a parent has over a child, for instance), we will meet the eclipse essence. The urge to affect the life direction (the Nodal contact) melds with the Will, the ‘I am,’ and the basic desire nature (“I want!”) and yet consciousness of the Self is not apparent–and we will be carried on a tide of feeling, sensation, and perception just as we were in early infancy!

That does not mean our responses and perceptions will be immature; rather, they will be fully felt in a way that leaves no room for verbally-framed thought– the desire to act, driven by feeling but lacking a root in a strong identity or thought-consciousness, will be the fundamental energy available.

Saturn Direct 12 June 2011: Get Off of My Cloud!

11 Saturday Jun 2011

astrology, real life astrology, Retrogrades, Saturn, Saturn Direct, Saturn Retrograde

Tell Saturn, 'Get your own cloud!' Constable 1822 {{PD-Art}}

The Old Man goes direct in the 9 PM hour Pacific on the 12th, at 10 Libra 26. Saturn makes no close (2 degrees or less) aspects at this time, so it seems the direction may be very subtle; for those who are sensitive to it (which will likely be those who currently have transiting Saturn pinning down one or more natal factors) the effect may be felt as relief, though it’s almost certain that the solution to the Saturn ‘ailment’ won’t be presented yet (probably not until Saturn begins to move forward, and/or moves off the aspect being formed)–instead it will likely be felt as, ‘I may not know what to do yet, but I know there’s a way out.’

We should keep in mind that not everyone responds in the same way to a retrograde heavy going direct; for some this is positive, but for others, who function better under retro energy, something they were ‘working’ successfully may now be suppressed, contained, or restricted, as Saturn re-gains his forward footing and re-asserts his strength. Since his strength is in control, rules, authority, and caution, his ability to exert himself unfettered can actually slow some things down considerably. This is especially hard on those who are strongly Uranus oriented natally; I know from experience that, with Uranus as chart ruler, Saturn’s retrograde is the time when I can move, construct, and build most quickly—and this is so in spite of a highly positive Saturn relationship in my natal scenario–direct in Sag, in the 10th, trine Uranus, sextile Mars, Jupiter, Sun, Chiron. When Saturn goes direct, I become much more aware of just what restricts me–and I can have a tendency to be more pessimistic about my chances in any venture, a perfect expression of a strong awareness of the Saturn presence. Watch carefully your response to Saturn’s direction; an innate too-prominent awareness of the need for discipline, a nose-to-the-grindstone attitude, and a no-nonsense approach that comes naturally to you may mean that you suffer a bit during Saturn’s direct period–where it’s reminding more carefree others about the need for rules and discipline, you may feel an extra-heavy burden of duty, a palpable loss of freedom, and a lack of ‘fun,’ as long as you follow those natural inclinations. Focus on Uranian and Jupiterian energies, both transiting and natal, to see just how and where you might find relief during Saturn’s direct period.

Irregardless of whether you work better under Saturn retrograde or Saturn direct, you will likely notice that the matters of the natal House where Saturn does his turnaround will show changes, possibly visible through a concrete manifestation of something into which we’ve put serious effort.

Moon in Virgo, My Daily Astrology Diary, The Astro Essence

Intuition may wear little wings and no pants. Ferdinand Leeke {{PD-Art}}

Keep in mind Venus is in the 29th degree of one of her own signs, and none-too happy about leaving it for the airy, chatty Gemini. Expect some mild crises in relationships, material matters, or financial ones, with the emphasis likely on whether they are providing that Taurean reassurance we value right now.

Just after 9 AM PDT the Virgo Moon squares Mercury in Gemini, making for conflicts that seem as if they’re grounded in facts, details, and accounting, but they’re really emotional, pure and simple. Everyone may be too quick to speak their minds; in fact, we’re likely to speak before we know our minds. Caution is in order.

6 PM Pacific the Moon conjoins Juno and the two are an arm to a T-square with the Sun/ Earth axis. The current Juno position suggests we have been seeking empowerment through reflection on and working on life purpose and the material circumstances that will advance our agenda; now the Moon comes along and chimes in: we are given an emotional take on our efforts and the situation, and a bonus: intuition is now speaking, loud and clear, offering a precise and detailed critique. Listen.
