Today we can’t seem to escape the past; our attention goes there, unbidden, and even our imagination, as well as our daydreams about the future, circles back to what was. The funny part is that our inclination is to learn new things, use our knowledge to create change, to tackle what we’ve been avoiding, and so build a future we can love. If we eschew extremism, radicalism, and rebellion for rebellion’s sake, and embrace concrete steps centering on things we truly care about, we’ll likely see positive results right away–and so be inspired to put our heads down and be as productive as we can (Pallas qnx BML, Neptune nov and Sun sesq SN, Jupiter sxt Pluto, Venus sxt Saturn, opp Uranus, parallel Jupiter)

Actually, what we’re talking about is the trouble with strong women, and by that I mean the disruption of the status quo by the sheer fact that there are more women than ever in this world willing and able to hold and express their own power. In this instance it upsets conventional ‘wisdom’ by alleging that women interacting with the world in a determinative way is somehow impractical; of course, it’s really about those in power not wanting to acknowledge the rage and too-long-denied need for autonomy, Self-determination, and for taking up an adequate amount of space for Self-expression felt by the disenfranchised of all stripe. A true presence in the world is something each and every one of us deserves–today is a day during which you can take significant steps to make this happen. Hint: Think Big, and use the facts–they are definitely trending in your favor (Pluto sesq Pallas, Saturn sq Ceres, Sun sesq BML, sxt Jupiter, trine Pluto, Pallas semi-sq Zeus)

Today’s word image is the Achilles heel. We all know what that is, right? One’s vulnerable point. We’ve all been injured there, lately–how did that happen, and what must you do to keep it from happening again? The suggestion is that it occurred because of some sort of unconscious extremity on your part–not to blame you, but to point out how inattention can be as injurious as anything inflicted by others.

In some sense, the Warrior Awakens; we are on the move, and much of what we deal with today we deal with intellectually, using the mind to parse, judge, and sort based on ideals and our own current understanding (Mars parallel Vesta, semi-sq Neptune, enters Aquarius). Essentially we’ll be dealing with what comes at us, and so may underestimate the input generated by our own Martian impetus, our own Will and aggressive manner. What we see may be that what the social order requires, or the facts present, is a situation that is in some way detrimental to us, and that may, should we take the ‘bait’, disempower us or force us to compromise (Jupiter sesq Hygeia, Uranus qnx Ceres). The answer to the call to arms comes in two forms: one says that the only way to overcome the issue is to love what hurts us, to find a way to embrace what has up to now been unloving or unkind (Venus qnx Chiron); the other says that if we ignore what presents itself as if we must fight or acquiesce, we move beyond it, and can address our ambitions and desires in smart ways, ones that don’t drain our power (Merc nov Zeus)–I think I like that last one, don’t you?

The New Moon occurs at 11:01 AM PDT at precisely 17 Virgo, opposed Neptune, sextile Jupiter, trine Pluto, and is apex to a Fist of God (Thor’s Hammer, for Nordic purists) with base of Black Moon Lilith square Uranus. The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘A Volcanic Eruption’ (and here’s why we read the Sabian for 17 Virgo, rather than reading 18 Virgo as we would if the event occurred even one minute later). Taken all together, we have to ask ourselves, What is it we need to sacrifice, let go of, or otherwise release, in order to honor humanity’s primal urge to appease forces mightier than we?

Contacts to the New Moon suggest we are already as far from illusion as we can get (opp Neptune–though this doesn’t take into account the individual capacity to fool oneself–so, if you’re firmly committed to a delusion, this won’t change things, but if you’re still in touch with reality, you stand on relatively firm ground); that the social sphere or ‘the facts’ (Jupiter) require/ facilitate change, destruction, removal, or transformation (Pluto); and that this need for change may spring from those matters we’ve ignored or denied (BML) clashing (the square) with our need to individuate, to proclaim our place within the group, or to upset through rebellion, revolution, invention, innovation, or original (Uranus) ideas or concepts introduced via our ‘shaking’ of the social apple cart.

A New Moon happening in Virgo automatically asks for a new start that makes us accountable, and calls for the paring away of what is extraneous, once we’ve critiqued the life. The Virgin of the sign paired with the symbol of the erupting volcano says that crisis forces action, or at least a response we hope will alleviate the pressure. That may be an illusion, a superstition–and yet, the ‘giving away’ (that is, sacrifice) of something we find precious, useful, productive, that holds potentials, is a true sacrifice; typically we only let go of what we no longer need, no longer find of value, and that means, no matter how generous, it’s not a sacrifice at all. With this New Moon, we may be asked to acknowledge what we’ve avoided, to change what needs transforming, and to embrace something unique within ourselves and put that center stage in the life, perhaps for a time allowing it to define us, in service to, and response to, something greater than we. What we give up, contribute, or let go in the hope of bettering things may be something we value–in fact, it has to be, or our efforts to satisfy the emotional call of the New Moon will go unanswered.

Bonus: a natal placement at 16 Taurus 30 to 19 Taurus 30 fills in an Earth Grand Trine with Pluto and the New Moon–your sacrifice may be larger, more definitive, or more final than most, and may carry the essence of the natal planet or point contacted.

Also, a natal placement at 16-19 Aries is apex to a Finger of God with base of the New Moon and Jupiter. This suggests that New Moon efforts on the social scene, or based on what you learn at this time, may prompt a ‘new start’ in terms of the contacted planet or point.

Ceres enters Libra and opposes Chiron in Aries, forming a Cardinal T-square with an arm of stationary and then direct Saturn in Capricorn, which lasts through the 12th. This may act as backdrop for two other active players, the Sun and Mercury; the background, first. The T may set up a doing dynamic (Cardinal energy) where we believe we’re approaching everything with a Collective awareness, a sense that we’re thinking adequately of others and their needs, especially partners or our audience (Libra)–the reality may be that we are falsely equating what we as individuals believe and want with what everyone wants (Aries). We think we know the ‘right’ answer for every situation, and will charge forward until obstacles, or conversely a sudden ‘Go!’ signal (the brakes removed by Saturn’s direct motion), slows us down (yes, the suddenly open pathway will be a case of ‘You’re getting your way so you can see how wrong you are!’) It doesn’t mean everything will be a disaster; at least some of what happens will be positive, will represent significant progress–it’s more a condition where we will learn how injurious having our unfettered way can be to ourselves and to others (Chiron in Aries).

That said, once we wake up to this dynamic, we’ll likely fall into a ‘Me Versus the World’ mindset. A square of Pluto to Zeus and Mars square Venus might make us feel there are forces out to get us (or at least someone ready to give us a hard time), and a trine of Uranus to Pallas might make it very difficult to consider we may not be the wisest voice–and this also makes Saturn a partner in an Earth Grand Trine with Pallas-Mercury and Uranus, lasting through the 11th, but with Merc moving on by the 8th. We see ourselves (or the group–Uranus) as smart and practical, reasonable, original and innovative–and good luck convincing us otherwise!

The most ‘surface’ energies we’ll deal with come in two flavors: the Sun and what it touches, and Mercury and what it touches. The Sun will contra-parallel and oppose Neptune=the influence is one of rationality, but that also means creativity and idealism suffer in the light of critical thinking (Virgo Sun); parallel Hygeia and novile the North Node=our attention to the critical functions and the details is healthy, and can help guide us in clever and advantageous acts that form the future; and the Sun acts as apex to a Fist of God with base of Mars square Uranus=those who truck in anger and chaos at this time may find themselves under a criticism-welcoming spotlight.

With Mercury we see it quincunx Mars and then enter Virgo=anger over the ego or how we’re treated as an individual (Merc in Leo) generates anger that gives way to a more discerning approach to things (Virgo); then quincunx Chiron, with the sextile of Chiron to Mars making Merc the apex to a Finger of God=a healed ego or assertive energy ‘speaks’ in some form; conjoin Pallas=and the result of that Finger is an addition to our store of wisdom; sesquiquadrate Pluto, and then Merc waltzes into that Earth Grand Trine=difficult but good for you eliminations segue into an appreciation of some facet of our balanced view/ approach; finally forming apex to another Finger, this one with base of Black Moon Lilith-South Node sextile Hygeia=when we face  and ‘process’ the past or those things we’ve been ignoring, we get healthy, and that influences our thinking positively. Isn’t that always the way?

We deal with ‘I versus We’ concepts through this period; with any luck, we achieve that healthy balance, and work out a viable and productive plan to go forward.

We’ll call this the Word Image for Today and Tomorrow, the 5th and 6th: I had a dream that I’ve been trying to retrieve since I woke up–and it’s not getting any clearer. I know at some point I’ll remember–even in the dream state, I thought: Oh, this is a really useful symbol. But, when I ‘see’ the dream, there is a central image that is blurred out. So, for now, I’m going to say that stands for something in the middle of our lives that either we should be focusing on, or that we’re missing all together–and its importance is based on its central role, around which so much else is defined or operates.

Today, as Pallas enters Virgo, we find wisdom in the details, that critical thinking is smart thinking (especially if it’s divorced from our fondnesses and expectations of reward, as that’s the only way to see and assess things objectively), and that honoring what we care about will make everything else fall into place. The one thing we might need to watch for is that plenty of other things (prejudices, fears, the desire to punish or reject) might be masquerading as instinct, and so steer us seriously off course. It’s a day to pay attention, ground perceptions in facts, be as accountable as possible, and never forget who and what you care about. (Venus sxt Vesta, Merc contra-parallel Venus and sq Sedna)

We are flooded with questions: When does might actually make right, if ever? Is being naturally strong, and sure of your rights, undercut ambition fulfillment, as others withdraw support or cooperation? Or does it make you less desirable to a Being afraid his (because face it, it’s men who are threatened by powerful women) power is inadequate? Those who fear for their status, their place in things, their position at the head of the table, will try to, if you’ll pardon the expression, cock-block us; but, we are so competent, so strong, that we can allow this response on the part of some others to act as a marker, showing us who can’t ‘cut it’, who will be a drain on you if you let them in, who needs to gently fall away from your life. Meanwhile, for those capable of being centered and who refuse to waste time or energy battling with those unsure others, ambition (even dream) fulfillment is on the agenda, as is effective action and thought that accurately reflect our own highest priorities, our talents, our values (Ceres contra-parallel Zeus, Jupiter semi-square Saturn, Mars trine Ceres, Mercury trine Vesta and sxt Venus, Sun parallel Ceres and contra-parallel Zeus).

Today’s word image is an individual who, while claiming to want to stop an abuse of some kind, is actually the perpetrator of it (and in this instance, we cannot discount the possibility that this person doesn’t know he or she is the source of the upset). Bring anyone to mind? This may sound a bit like a reiteration of the forecast, but it’s not. Go with whoever pops in to your head, and go forward knowing you should give this individual a wide berth, because they’re either malicious or confused to a truly detrimental degree.

The 1st there’s something I might term ‘Purity of Intention’ going on, where our imagination and ideals inspire us to adjust our actions so that they’re wise, our relationships so that empowerment is fair and others are honored appropriately, and in following this instinctual course we end up making surprising strides toward ambition fulfillment. Our only issue might be that when we act, especially act propelled by our own ego or Will, we may not be very smart about it. With these influences, there’s something about taking ourselves out of the equation that allows us to soar so much higher (Neptune contra-parallel Hygeia, Mars qnx Pallas, Venus qnx Juno, Sun nov Zeus and parallel Sedna)

On the 2nd Mercury squares Juno, and we may find ourselves arguing against or thinking in conflict with our own empowerment. Befuddled reasoning is a sure sign that we’re working against ourselves, while others’ delivery of negative commentary suggests they’re the power-stealing culprit.

I’m not talking about the one who raised you, or the ideal you have of how a perfect mother would behave–I’m talking about the internalized mother we all carry, an Archetype that carries the voices of both your personal experiences with the maternal and those of the Collective to which you’ve been exposed. This is so even if we aren’t aware of it, or even if we protest we couldn’t possibly have one, because our mother was so dysfunctional that we rejected her example outright! We all know what being loved in a motherly way feels like (even if we were deprived of this in real life), and it’s that Sense of Loving Nurture that we are asked to tap into today. This Archetype, and our own instincts, can successfully guide us right now, but there’s something else: the Sun and Venus are as far apart as they ever get, in a tense semi-square, and this suggests we’ll also see or be aware of the negative side in relationships, of the ways we are denied love, or deny it to others, and this can reveal to us where we are so deeply injured that it distorts our very concept of Love. It shows us, at a more profound level than even the Chirotic wound, where we need to heal, and that brings us to something that remains true in every circumstance: we can’t look to externals to ‘fill’ that need for Love–only we can heal ourselves–and today our instinctual nature may reveal to us exactly how to achieve that (Ceres trine and parallel Sedna, Sun semi-sq Venus)

Why does it seem like today everything we love, all those things that seem so smart, so wise, so worthy of reverence, makes us edgy, nervous, feeling like the only way to move forward is slowly, looking over our shoulder? It’s pure instinct, screaming at us to for gods’ sake prepare mentally for what is going to abruptly, suddenly, shockingly appear in our lives. We can’t know ahead of time what that will be or even when that will be (but it will be soon); we can only know that our current mentality is inadequate to respond effectively and process accurately. It’s time, then, to look at how we’re spending our time, at what we’re treating as sacred, at how and where we’re dedicating our energies–and so decide very consciously what our daily life and work will be about. That’s the only adequate defense against Uranian threats to what we love–knowing who we are, and knowing what matters, automatically tells us what to do in an upset or an emergency (Pallas sq Sedna, Vesta nov SN, Venus contra-parallel Uranus, Merc sesq Hygeia)
