The AstroEssence: Prior to the culmination of the Moon-Earth/ Sun-Saturn opposition, we’ll likely be caught up with the power situation as it exists in our world, and particularly with two facets of it: what kind of hurt other power players or those in authority may have inflicted in the past, and how we might exploit and deploy our own urges toward gaining power via opportunities, especially in the form of satisfying appetites. Though this can prompt a little more navel-gazing and a few more vengeance fantasies than are productive, we are keyed toward obtaining power or influence within a situation only in the smartest way–and so we likely avoid indulging in anything either counter-productive or that triggers negative consequences down the road (Chiron contra-parallel Ceres, Pluto nov Pallas, Jupiter conj Zeus)

Full Moon in Gemini occurs at 4:05 PM Pacific time at 22 Gemini 25. The Mystic Rectangle of which the Full Moon is a part actually formed a couple of days ago, but the FM will probably bring the potentials initiated by formation to completion, realization, or expression–that is, something that only began to show itself or take shape just before or early in the weekend (maybe even gathering momentum out of our sight) now reaches fulfillment, becomes obvious, or concludes. The arms of the Mystic Rectangle are made up of: Moon-Earth in Gemini, Ceres-Uranus in Aries, Sun-Saturn in Sagittarius, Jupiter-Zeus in Libra. Active modalities are Cardinal and Mutable, Elements involved are Air and Fire, and we may have a more-than-usually high chance of the Full Moon events having a material or environmental, real-world impact, not just via the Cardinal energy, but due to the involvement of Earth, Saturn, and Ceres. Mental perceptions play a part as well, through Uranus (the intellect), Gemini, and Libra–and we may put beliefs in both the mental and emotional categories (Jupiter), with emotions a natural component of a Full Moon, which typically reveals, concludes, or completes a feeling response or emotional perception in relation to ourselves and our identity (the Sun)–but in what arena?

This little cocktail is a 'Bittersweet Symphony

This little cocktail is a ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ By Visitor7 – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=33142586

First though, what does a Mystic Rectangle promise? Think of it as a kind of cocktail made of energy. Each component gives us a single, unique ‘taste’, but it’s only when everything is combined in just the right amounts that it takes on a nuanced flavor that goes beyond any one ingredient. A Mystic Rectangle is the proportional ‘mix’ that creates a sum much bigger than its parts by bringing together at least four disparate but harmoniously relating energies–in this case, we have eight. These energy ‘flavors’ play off each other, acting as both receivers and catalysts, and so acting and being acted upon. Add to this the emotional and conclusive states inherent in the Full Moon, and we have something both dynamic, indicating the relationships of these bodies and the way they create something larger than they could individually, and something complete, meaning that the energy of the mix finds a final, definitive form at this point, and it’s likely something that brings an emotional perception or reality to a peak, or to an end.

Where the Full Moon falls, as well as where each of the Rectangle’s points falls, within the natal chart will tell the individual where in the life this dynamic will be in play; the general pattern, though, tells us that the synergy of the emotional impact of our surroundings and how we think of these (the Moon-Earth in Gemini) bring original or unusual individual responses that urge action and use of power, the kind that makes a statement about who we are that we want others to see or hear (Ceres-Uranus in Aries), and this statement affects our real-world situation (Sun-Saturn in Sagittarius), revealing beliefs and facts about the kind of cooperation or support we can expect in fulfilling our wants and ambitions (Jupiter-Zeus in Libra). The Full Moon shows the result of a complex interaction of the actual reality situation and our perceptions of it, especially our emotional perceptions.

There is also a quincunx of the Full Moon to Black Moon Lilith, a trine to Mars, and a square of Chiron with the Sun-Earth axis. This suggests that, though a Mystic Rectangle is a generally fortuitous configuration, implying the potential for serendipitous circumstances and ‘coincidences’ and really excellent timing of events and choices, these may come about through or are accompanied by difficulties. There is the possibility that the Full Moon brings or is followed by the uncomfortable need to examine what has been ignored, denied, or that has enraged, and this comes with both conflict over wounds inflicted and received and how they’ve shaped Self-expression and accomplishment, and creates a strong, no-holds-barred sense of needing to act, to do something about what’s perceived. That tells us that, though we may be highly conscious of and possibly actively involved with stresses at the time of the Full Moon, there will be available a set of positive synchronicities that we will most likely first become aware of through the feeling nature, and/ or through some kind of completion or ending–and if we can hook that urge to act to the symmetry of the Rectangle, we can take leaps forward in both consciousness and accomplishment.

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘Three Fledglings In A Nest High In A Tree’ In this symbol we have a ‘Trinity’ of something new, untested, ‘fresh’, ready (or very close to ready) to ‘leave the nest’ for the first time. This implies that whatever is completed at the Full Moon will then be ready for a ‘test flight’, to be taken out and tried in the real world. This sends us back to the point of the Rectangle that holds Jupiter-Zeus in Libra; Jupiter can represent the social order, the wider world, ‘the facts’ this world presents to us, and echoes the relation of Beliefs (Jupiter) to the spiritual number of the Trinity within the symbol. The matters of whatever House holds 18 Libra in your chart will describe where or in what capacity (what role) you will be bringing the Full Moon experience, after processing, out into the world, both to test its viability and to test its spiritual resiliency. In some way, what we are testing in the world will reflect our ambitions or wants, and we bring this forward with the goal of finding out how much support we might expect, and how these fledglings (ideas, choices, actions, creations) will affect our relationships and even our finances (Libra).

We also look to the Sabian for the Sun, as this gives us the ‘origin story’, the energy that drives the Full Moon picture. ‘A Group Of Immigrants As They Fulfill The Requirements Of Entrance Into The New Country’. This suggests that what occurs or is accomplished at this time is something we’ve been moving toward for a long time, something we have (literally or figuratively) studied for, filed the paperwork for, uprooted ourselves for, gone on an adventure for, left behind a previous life for, and/or crossed borders or boundaries to attain. We are on the threshold of something akin to a brand new life–let’s savor it.

The Full Moon in Taurus perfects at 5:52 AM Pacific time at 22 Taurus 37, loosely conjoined Sedna and loosely opposed Black Moon Lilith and Hygeia, loading the event axis and drawing all these energies into the T-square created by Pallas, the sextile to Chiron, and the semi-sextiles to Uranus and Ceres–and with these latter, I include them because the Sun is so prominent in this equation that, as supplier of the light, it’s almost stolen the show from the Moon. This isn’t too surprising, as conjoined Sedna, the Full Moon itself may fall in a kind of Collective ‘blind spot’, so that en masse we find ourselves unable to see just exactly what has come to an end, and possibly not see what this is telling us, at all.

In the midst of writing this I took a break to meditate a little on it, and I come back to the keyboard convinced that it’s actually the Sun and its contacts that will supply the overt energy here. It’s all about the stories we tell ourselves, what we’re willing to face, see, and deal with, what we explain away or use to explain our own inaction. With the Sun so psychically prominent, what concludes, draws to a close, ends, completes, or is denied or removed will occur in such a way that, even if we are conscious of it, it won’t be the focus of our conscious attention. Instead our gaze, literal or figurative, may fall on those darker matters, long denied or ignored, or that enrage, and the need to ‘clean them up’, to create a more healthy environment in one form or another. This suggests we have a prime chance to heal or remedy something, and we do this in part by adjusting our own attitudes of rebellion, erratic response, and irrationality, and our relationship to power, both our own and the authority others hold. It’s the smart thing to do, but not easy, and we may hear alarm bells that tell us a compromise isn’t wise–but that would be the ego by way of the intellect, wanting to keep things theoretical, rather than wading in to really make a difference and clean up the mess.

We may lose something that comforted us, but that in reality kept us from dealing with what is. The situation, circumstances, or attitudes we must deal with to ‘clean this up’ are, no doubt, at least somewhat toxic–but that’s the point, we’ve avoided them because they pollute us or drag us down or confuse us–and now it must come to an end, for our own and the larger good.

Anonymous (Korea) 'Rabbits and Moon' 19th century {{PD}}

The Sabian symbol for the Full Moon is, ‘A Jewelry Shop Filled With Valuable Gems’–but let’s look at the Sun symbol as a second part, though more closely aligned than we would normally see it: ‘A Rabbit Metamorphoses Into A Nature Spirit’. In the first symbol, the one for the Moon, we see a place filled with valuable items–but we don’t know if those are obtainable, if we have any access to them, or anything to exchange for them, possibly mirroring the benefits we could enjoy if we would deal with things. Right now, though, they belong to someone else (the shop). In the second we see a rabbit, which very strongly vibes to Taurean values of comfort, abundance, fecundity, and the sense of being ‘earthed’, and this materially-oriented viewpoint transforms into a spiritual one, suggesting that once we deal with the heretofore ignored toxic matters, we unlock not just abundance (the gems), we move beyond the material in terms of benefits (the rabbit as spirit).

As an aside, Mercury also conjoins Juno today and semi-squares Zeus, adding notes of empowerment and ambition–so it likely seems we are just pursuing our own effectiveness and trying to reach goals, when in reality we are at work unlocking and transforming earthly assets and rewards into spiritual ones.

For those born with the Sun at 22 Scorpio: In recently trying to heal or ‘fix’ things, you may have discovered a great deal about yourself, especially about what you are or are not willing to do–and this coming year, through to your next birthday, you’ll be challenged to decide just how much you’re willing to cooperate with or knuckle under to those in authority. It may not be pretty, but should make very clear what power you really do hold, and so solidify your reach and bring to an end some matters that simply drained you, while offering opportunities for you to do more, and do more better, than ever before. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

The New Moon in Scorpio is conjoined Mercury, sesquiquadrate Chiron, and trine Neptune. The Sun and Moon conjoined always brings a new start, sparks a beginning, or, as with the event in Scorpio, may see the inception of a mystery, something hidden away, something that presents an illusion or deception, or something we don’t immediately recognize or understand to be a beginning, perhaps because it seems to be destructive, a coming-apart or change. What you need to know is this may bring a dream to realization, eventually, once the healing we’ve been resisting is accomplished, but the New Moon brings only a hint of what’s to come, and possibly delivers it in a form that at first creates delusion, confusion, secrets, or that plunges us into the creative, and so puts us out of touch with the reality picture. We may literally dream it rather than experience it; it may be that it’s only later that the mind can draw the thread from this New Moon start to the eventual fulfillment of the dream, materialization of what was imagined, or to the active application of the ideals to the real-world scenario.

The Sabian symbol is, ‘A Calm Lake Bathed In Moonlight’. This suggests emotional calm (the calm lake) that allows the individual to receive the inspiration or intuition needed (the moonlight). The keyword here might be ‘receptivity’, not just an openness but a stillness that makes us capable of receiving the message without interfering noise or the impulse to immediately react to what’s offered. ‘Bathed’ suggests a Scorpionic immersion, even a kind of pre-verbal, womb state. Allowing ourselves this kind of immersive experience promises at least a start to any difficult healing we may need to undergo, and specifically may spark our initial move toward or awareness of the New Moon dream.

For those born with the Sun at 7 Scorpio: This year, through to your next birthday, will be one of active communication–but it’s up to you whether that will carry a big creative dream forward, whether it will result in a spiritual advance for yourself, or whether you might spend the entire time chasing an illusion, or perpetrating a deception. Good thing it’s up to you, right? Choose according to your ideals, and you should reach your next Solar Return with some version of a magnum opus–we should all be so lucky! Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

I recommend this article by Liz Hathway, if you’re looking for a general peek forward to the US election.

By Émile Friant - {{PD}}

‘The Boating Party’ or ‘Reunion of the Meurthe Boating Party’, by Émile Friant – {{PD}}

The Lunar Essence: With the Full Moon in Aries at 23 Aries 14 occurring at 9:23 PM Pacific daylight time, we see the threesome of Earth-Moon-Uranus in a less than one degree span opposed the Libra Sun, which is sesquiquadrate Neptune. The Full Moon itself of course forms a semi-square to Neptune, and is as stated conjoined Uranus and widely conjoined Ceres, the latter of which sits at 29 degrees of the Moon’s sign, adding stress through the actions of Nature or authorities. The Full Moon is also quincunx Juno, and makes a wide square to Vesta, which we should count as the swift-moving Moon races toward, rather than away from, aspect completion, with this square creating a T-square with the Sun/ Earth-Moon-Uranus axis (but even more closely aspecting Ceres, as both Vesta and Ceres sit at 29 degrees), adding even more stress. It’s notable, too, that this Sun is also parallel both Juno and Neptune, suggesting that just observing, just seeing (the light of the Sun) can empower and make the dream, whatever that may be for the individual, a very realistic possibility.

full-moon-in-aries-october-2016So what do we get from this Full Moon? Why stress, of course! But from what source? We reach a peak of involvement with, rejection of, rebellion from, or original and innovative cooperation with ‘the group’, and this brings us to a point of ‘energy crisis’ in terms of our own power and authority, our priorities and those things we honor, and with how closely the results align with what we imagine is ideal, as well as how we feel about this resulting real-world arrangement. It’s a point of radical enlightenment, as we see quite clearly the personal power situation and the role we can play in the larger scenario, and these are revealed within the microcosm of a single interactive situation; we assess this real-life situation, and see beyond it (into the Uranian future, if you will) to what larger role we can play, title we can claim, or area where we can accomplish.

There are both stresses that are not under our conscious control, such as Mother Nature, exerting herself through things like weather and our own biology, and stresses within areas where we have exerted ourselves, tried to gain empowerment or authority, tried to commit to those matters that are most important to us. The Vestal energies of dedication, commitment, and the sacred must resolve against those Ceres energies of power expression, authority, and knowing and controlling our ‘domain’, and this is done through Ceres’ own mechanism of negotiation, an internal discussion that happens within the individual psyche that is acted out in real-world arenas. We see what adjustments, compromises, and alterations are required for ‘the dream’ to become reality, with the light of the Full Moon showing us exactly where and how we are empowered to make it happen.

Wiosna w Gościeradzu (Spring in Gościeradz)  by Leon Wyczółkowski {{PD}}

Wiosna w Gościeradzu (Spring in Gościeradz) by Leon Wyczółkowski {{PD}}

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘Blown Inward By The Wind, The Curtains Of An Open Window Take The Shape Of A Cornucopia’. The FM event ‘opens a window’ that is either a time period of opportunity, or an ability to both see our goals clearly, and to know what the ‘fruits’ of our current direction will actually be, the latter allowing us to make needed adjustments to our actions and choices. The FM offers either feedback that illuminates our own effectiveness and true course, or the chance to make things happen, if we’ll only take the steps, or modify our path, a chance to affect things that didn’t exist until now.

'Butterflies', Wilhelm von Kaulbach, c1860 {{PD}}

‘Butterflies’, Wilhelm von Kaulbach, c1860 {{PD}}

We always look at the Sun for a Full Moon, as the source of the Full Moon’s light. ‘A Butterfly With A Third Wing On Its Left Side’ suggests nothing so much as fulfillment; that is, the result of what has incubated and emerged, now fully ready, developed, that holds all the promise invested in its preparation–and a third wing simply implies a resource, a kind of existential aid, akin to the Third Eye: there is something extra, unplanned but propitious, that offers information or assistance specifically useful to our goals. Lucky us, right?

The AstroEssence: There are only a few other influences at play for the 15th, and these may have us spending the time leading up to the Full Moon with our attention in places other than those that will be illuminated with the Lunar culmination. One is the way we might be weighing methods of healing against our own wounds, judging physical as well as mental and emotional situations for how healthy they might be; it’s an attempt to concentrate on hurts, to deal with them, but perhaps not to totally embrace what we know to be the healthy option. We’re trying to justify holding on to our wounds. It’s our thinking that’s encouraging the problem: we are obsessed with the dark, with how we’ve been wronged, with how others hold power over us, and in continuing to nurse our hurts it’s taking a (Self) destructive turn. Fortunately, though, what we’ll actually choose to do will be done with an eye to building the future–it’s just that we may not see how much better the future could be, if we could forgive, heal, let go (Chiron sesq Hygeia, Mercury sq Pluto, Mars trine NN)

For those born with the Sun at 23 Libra: It’s all about taking what’s new, modern, original in your world and making the most of it. The sudden, the surprising, the heartfelt facilitates accomplishment, and the smart move is to embrace them. The only thing we can count on is change, right? Oh, and death and taxes. But, this coming year should be more than a little positive and profitable for you, Libra, just as long as you conquer that crisis in confidence, and realize you can’t rule unless you’re willing to claim your territory. Good luck, and Happy Birthday!

A Summer Shower, by Charles Edward Perugini 1888 {{PD}}

A Summer Shower, by Charles Edward Perugini 1888 {{PD}}

The AstroEssence of the 17th and 18th, and the Lunar Essence of the Full Moon in Aquarius: Leading up to the Full Moon we are faced with a question: Are we changed by Love, Money, or secrets revealed about values or assets, or are we the agent of change in areas of Love, in finances, in the keeping or spilling of secrets, or in recognizing a change in our values, and so changing how we relate? Since Earth signs are involved (Venus trine Pluto), we should expect a material, or at least tangible, impact; we may be ‘undone’, with some Venusian aspect of life devastated, destroyed, or transformed (don’t panic, this may be a good thing!) This fundamental change sets the stage for the conclusion, end, or completion associated with the Full Moon, 2:25 AM PDT of the 18th at 25 Aquarius 51. This is a near miss, an almost eclipse, and the impact we feel may be as much the Venus-Pluto aspect that precedes the Lunar event (as it leaves us reeling and yet unsure of what hit us) as it is the pull of the Full Moon itself.

This Full Moon, along with Uranus, forms the base for a Finger of God, with apex Jupiter. Should we also include Mercury, which is conjoined Jupiter and within orb of Uranus, but not the Full Moon? It’s a tough call, but I’m inclined to say Yes, as proximity to the other elements of the Finger means Mercurial energy will enter in some form–it just may not be what it seems. That is, we may believe we have come by rational means to a concluding belief, decision to expand, teach, or learn, or concerning a social role (Jupiter)–but the mind may simply be a means of translating our perceptions at the level of Higher Mind (Uranus) that is revealed through events of this Aquarian FM. This suggests it may be Higher Mind inspired feeling (Aquarius Moon) that is really running the show, not the cogitations of our limited, trapped-in-three-dimensions brains. Awareness of this will make us more open to spontaneity and give us confidence in our own choices (both Uranus in Aries) and this in turn allows a more attuned experience than does being overly-focused on our thinking and the illusion of control this inevitably gives.

Different fingers. Pink Sherbet Photography from USA – ‘Happy Finger Friends Love’ by D Sharon Pruitt CC BY 2.0

Too, let’s note the way Chiron is caught at the midpoint of the Finger’s base; since the opposition with Jupiter is separating, the implication may be that the dynamic of the Finger begins with a wound, or with an instance of healing, that then spurs the Higher Mind understanding that melds with the FM event to offer that Jupiterian result.

The Full Moon is also apex to a loose Fist of God (or Thor’s Hammer, for you Vikings) with base of Vesta and Hygeia. This may take us further back in time, to where an instance or pattern of not honoring our health (the Cardinal square between Vesta and Hygeia) helps bring about the Full Moon event–which, as you know, is likely to be related to matters of the House where the Full Moon falls.

A novile is formed by the Full Moon to Pluto, and the Sun/ Earth-Moon axis squares Sedna, creating a T-square. A sense of rebellion from what is instinctual may combine with a deep urge toward destruction and change–this makes a kind of engine for the configurations to run on, generating some deep conflict and energizing our embrace of change. We may reject or find unacceptable our usual, unprocessed response, and the conflict this engenders, along with an advantageous glimpse of what things might be like with the upsetting factors gone, eliminated, or reformed, is enough to make all the rest spring into action.

Elefantino di Giulia Orecchia Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International

And now we need to examine the elephant in the room. Her name is Pallas, and she’s conjoined the Full Moon in Aquarius. This suggests that everything involved with the Full Moon is a measure or test of our wisdom and practicality, as well as our skills and ability to apply them. This theme will loom large, and yet we won’t necessarily be seeing events, feelings, urges, and our responses to them as a test-taking or assessment–that only comes later, when the conclusion that is unavoidable with a Full Moon event makes it clear we wound up where we are because of what we consider smart, what we know, and how practical our ultimate orientation.

The Sabian symbol for 26 Aquarius (remember, we read up) is, ‘A Garage Man Testing A Car’s Battery With A Hydrometer’. This emphasizes the mechanism of testing, which we’ve already discussed. A battery is Uranian, while the hydrometer points toward the importance of feeling and so the Water signs involved: Chiron in Pisces, and one part of the Fist base, in Cancer. Both these signs are volatile emotionally, at least in part because the barriers between the individual and the Collective/ Others is blurred, even as we ‘test’ it from our own unique expressions of Will and viewpoint (Uranus in Aries). This could imply that if we are having a hard time processing our own feelings surrounding this FM, we may divert our emotions into a Big Picture expression, one that allows us to express but doesn’t risk quite so much emotional exposure, even to ourselves.

We also look at the Sun’s Sabian with a Full Moon, simply because it is the origin of all light, and so enables perception. ‘After The Heavy Storm, A Rainbow’. So, whatever troubles are stirred at this time, we can be assured it’s for the good, or at the very least, that it will all work out positively.

The only aspects not addressed by the FM are Venus’ contra-parallel to Zeus and parallel to the North Node; these add a flavor of drama, wherein relationships, values, or finances push back on our ambitions, and where we struggle to reconcile wants with maintenance of what we care about. It’s easy to see that this will add tension to the feeling nature, and again make us work to figure things out, rather than allowing Higher Mind to possess us for a time.

(Perfecting on respective days: Venus trine Pluto/ Pallas sesq Hygeia, Venus contra-parallel Zeus and parallel NN, Sun sq Sedna)

Odilon Redon - L'oeuf 1884 {{PD}}

Odilon Redon – L’oeuf 1884 {{PD}}

The word image for both days is a peeled, hard-boiled egg. We’re always talking about ‘potential’, especially in terms of our own lives and our own creativity. An egg is potential itself, but hard-boiling it captures potential and turns it into solid mass; it is what it is, at that moment–there’s no more room for development. The events of this Full Moon may show us that certain things can no longer remain (at least in our minds) in that state of potential; they will have already hardened, taken shape, and so must be accepted, used, dealt with as they are.

For those born with the Sun at 25 Leo: speaking of potential, you are fairly bursting with it–but what you need to know is that making the most of it won’t come easily: you will be tempted to fight every instinct and the deep, rhythmic primordial knowledge of life itself as it attempts to guide and inform you. Why would you resist that? It could be that you’ve come to believe too strongly in your own individuality; it’s time to acknowledge that there are forces out there bigger than you, and that they want to help. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

For those born with the Sun at 26 Leo: a lot of things have come to an end recently, and you move into a new emotional ‘day’, with all the optimism that can offer. You’ve learned a great deal; we could say you’ve become wise, from all you’ve experienced. It’s time to take what you know and apply it in the smartest way possible; all that you know will coalesce to create a kind of ‘magic touch’ that, with even minimal effort, will manifest exactly what you’re aiming for. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

If you don’t find your groove, moving forward may feel like this. 1912

The AstroEssence: Action-taking and choice-making are impulsive and yet create opportunities, and may in particular create an opportunity related to the New Moon; this abundance of possibility is true for us, as long as we access instinct, don’t confuse that with wishful thinking, and stay aligned with our genuine priorities. We can make gains in knowledge and widen our horizons, if we can find the groove. Strange as it may sound, just don’t think about it; that may be our best ‘in’ to the instinctual nature, along with feelings that are clear (that is, not confused with thought). Those who confuse the sources and meaning of their impulses will find it costly, damaging to either relationships or finances, while everyone else can successfully ignore the unpleasant or denied in favor of the instinctual and what’s true to oneself (Mars into Sagittarius, Vesta-Pallas-Juno Water Grand Trine still in effect–see forecast for the 1st–with Vesta also perfecting a sextile to Ceres, Venus sq Sedna, Mercury contra-parallel Black Moon Lilith)

Sun_and_Moon_Nuremberg_chronicleThe Lunar Essence is exemplified by the New Moon in Leo, falling at 10 degrees 57 minutes, at 1:44 PM PDT of the 2nd. This event in Leo brings a focus of Self-awareness, of our part in the larger scheme, and particularly makes us aware of how we might ‘shine’ in life. This meeting of Sun and Moon (as viewed from our perspective on Earth) ends the Dark period and signifies energetically an inception, a new start, a seed moment, likely related to the real-world matters represented by the House in the natal chart in which the NM falls. The aspects made tell us the story; this New Moon is square to Black Moon Lilith, trine Saturn, quincunx Neptune (and close to but too far out to count a quincunx to the SN), and sesquiquadrate Chiron. We personally (Leo) can begin the process of materialization, or we can find shape and context for these matters, or we can limit or otherwise contain issues related to matters of the House where the NM falls. It will take some effort, some of it potentially unpleasant, but the results can be both healing and creative (especially if you can find that groove!) and can remove a long-held shadow from the psyche.

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘Children Play On A Swing Hanging From The Branches Of A Huge Oak Tree’. This may tell us that our best approach, as with the ‘not thinking’ mentioned above, is one that takes a carefree attitude with developments, toward both what we do or generate and what comes from outside us. Play may be our most useful and productive way of engaging the energies, as it all ‘hangs’ on our wisdom and strength, signified by the oak in the image.

For those born with the Sun at 11 Leo: it may feel like you have just awakened, just been struck by the lightning of an exciting and vital idea, or that you are embarking on a renewed life, even if nothing in your circumstances has changed. This is the effect of having your Solar Return follow so closely in the lee of a New Moon. The emphasis, for you this year, is on creativity; be willing to be flexible, to make the changes, adjustments, and modifications that will support exercising your creative energies and doing right by your spiritual needs, because a helpful wind is with you–you can go a lot farther than you think. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

Macbeth: If we should fail?
Lady Macbeth: We fail!
But screw your courage to the sticking-place,
And we’ll not fail.

–The Tragedy of Macbeth, Act I, Scene VII

But of course, the Scottish general and his ambitious wife do fail, spectacularly, and though I don’t see this Full Moon as bringing failure, I do think it might require we screw our own courage to the sticking place, in order to face some knowledge we acquire or some unavoidable facts (Sagittarius); what we learn will likely ask us to bring something that affects our status or our empowerment options to a definitive point or conclusion.

The Full Moon occurs at 4:02 AM PDT of the 20th at 29 Sagittarius 32, opposing Venus, in wide trine to Uranus and Ceres which are closely conjoined, sextile to Black Moon Lilith and Juno, and the Sun-Moon/ Earth axis squares Chiron (and if we’d like to count Hygeia, we get a Grand Cross). The placement by degree of this Moon tells us stress may accompany the promised resolution. All but the sextile to Juno are outside our usual stringent 2 degree (give or take a bit) limit for creating a New or Full Moon picture, and that says that the focus of this event will definitely be our own empowerment or power expression within a particular role we currently hold; it may also involve some radical and definitive assessments of the ‘once and for all’ kind involving the mate or partner, and we know this will bring about a healing for us, a return to health, in some important arena (likely related to the House in the natal chart where this Full Moon falls).

Brooklyn_Museum_-_Rabbits_and_MoonThis is the second Full Moon in Sagittarius in a row; it may echo the May Full Moon, or could present the resolution to what we learned at that point. In either case, this FM maximizes our personal power and our Self-responsibility; there’s no getting away from the fact that we create our own Fate–hence our need for sticking-place courage, in order to deal with whatever comes along, and to make the choices only we can make.

As long as we do not fall prey to our own sentimentality, to relationship demands or affections that warp our good sense or our need to support our own optimal health, we can see things for what they really are, and in seeing acknowledge what needs to happen for our own wholeness. The Sabian for this Full Moon is, ‘The Pope Blessing The Faithful’; we are the ‘holy authority’ that must give its blessing to our choices and our life direction–no external authority or blessing is needed, though if one is bestowed, it’s a clear signal that you are headed in the right direction.

We always inspect the Sabian for the Sun with a Full Moon, as a clue to the source of Full Moon events: ‘A Parade Of Bathing Beauties Before Large Beach Crowds’. This suggests to me a chance to show our attributes, who we are, to those in our sphere; it suggests accolades for our innate Beingness, a kind of credit we often fail to acknowledge, or even be aware of, something which can get lost within relationships, but a kind of credit we must all remember to take.

Étienne Tournes -' La Toilette' 1874 {{PD}}

Étienne Tournes -‘ La Toilette’ 1874 {{PD}}

What goes on Saturday the 4th is concentrated on the New Moon and the beginnings it offers, with only mild influences from other contacts–those other contacts first: Juno is contra-parallel Ceres, suggesting power struggles over who holds authority, and possibly some Willful demonstrations of trying to move the immovable; and Uranus semi-squares Vesta, suggesting it may be tough for those on a rebellious or independent streak to honor what they truly care about (read: some may transgress, in the name of ‘being myself’). So we enter the weekend with lots of struggle, much of it internal and aimed at exercising our Will. Then comes the New Moon.

Conjoining of Moon and Sun in Gemini perfects just a hair (that’s a technical term!) before 8 PM PDT of the 4th at 14 Gemini 53, and happens to have Venus conjoined by degree, but still not yet perfecting her meeting with the Sun. This triplicity is trine Zeus, loosely sesquiquadrate Juno and Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, in wide quincunx to Pluto, and square Jupiter and Neptune and opposed Saturn-Earth, these latter four bodies constituting that Grand Cross we’ve been so caught up in. All this suggests that the new beginnings of this New Moon are intricately connected to the experience of the Grand Cross, specifically concerning issues of ambition and desire as they concern ‘the Other’ (Zeus in Libra), of digging for the reasons behind personal empowerment or its lack (Juno in Scorpio), of exploring (or being forced to explore) what we may have hidden, been in denial of, or been enraged by (BML in Scorpio), and what, if anything, we can do to alter circumstances (Pluto in Cap).

The New Moon event is thus simply the outgrowth of what has been gestating/ developing with the tension of the Grand Cross, particularly as this applies to the social role or attempts at expanding one’s world (Jupiter), the current reality (Saturn-Earth), and the creativity or clarity of connection to reality (Neptune), and all in terms of how this plays out in relationships and/ or finances. In short, we find out something about ourselves, about what we want, and who we want, and how effective (or not) we’ve been at getting it.

The best thing, though, is that we may be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and, no matter what the Grand Cross has revealed or delivered, see the beauty and worth reflected there (Venus), with new ideas occurring (Gemini) as to how that beauty and worth matters to our world. If we have an iffy relationship with Venus, we may be able to make peace with her now; an ability to Love Ourselves may emerge that adds incomparably to a positive interpretation of our own gifts and Beingness. Those who have a too-Venus oriented view already may find themselves judging the worth of everything around them, and so devaluing the Venusian intangibles that help balance our relationships and our view of the world; this is the signal to step back, and see that not all that holds worth can necessarily be seen.

'Two Girls Playing' Peter Ilsted c1900 {{PD}}

‘Two Girls Playing’ Peter Ilsted c1900 {{PD}}

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘Two Dutch Children Talking To Each Other, Exchanging Their Knowledge’. The fact that these are children in the symbol right away tells us that the knowledge these two are sharing may be incomplete, lack nuance, or could be innocent of the darker side of matters, though an exchange of what’s known is exactly what Gemini energy is made for. That could imply that information acquisition is a vital part of the New Moon event, but should perhaps be accepted with some caution: despite honesty and good intentions, what we receive may not be as sophisticated or complete as we really need. And why Dutch children? At the time these symbols were received by Elsie Wheeler and Marc Edmund Jones, the Dutch had a reputation (at least in the U.S., where the symbol divining occurred) for a spare, clean, direct, and a little bit cheap approach to life (phrases like ‘going Dutch’ are still in use, though I’d like to point out that stereotypes are just that, with no relation to real people or cultures), and that suggests that within the symbol we may be dealing with bare-bones knowledge, things that are certainly true, but that don’t carry the shades of meaning needed to truly understand something–or, that something important has been held back, a ‘cheap’ attitude toward info sharing. The implication is that what is conveyed by the New Moon is somehow incomplete, and knowing that will prevent us acting before we’ve acquired the details and shading that will give our knowledge necessary depth.

By the 5th we see both the Sun and Venus completing a sesquiquadrate to Juno, and yet they have not yet perfected conjunction themselves. This lends the day an outward-looking attitude, one that may tangle with, even challenge, the empowerment or assertive rights of others, from a sense of Self-satisfaction, a ‘knowing’ of who we are, that feels a bit like superiority–but as long as we also recognize Mars novile Zeus, we can subdue the ego in clever ways that get us what we want, and still allow others to do the same–and this is probably the ‘Go!’ point that what we learned about yesterday (per the Sabian Symbol) and were waiting for.

21 May 2016 Full Moon in Sagittarius: Choice and Balance

Since there are no new aspects perfecting for the 18th, I thought it might be time to consider the upcoming Full Moon. For once I think we’ll be served best to look at it early, with time to consider what kind of choices we might like to (or have to) make. But before we do, the word image for the 18th: A nuclear reactor shuts down on its own, to the surprise of the attending technicians. Considering we’re in approach to the Full Moon, this may describe a situation where, before we reach FM circumstances, we will temporarily ‘shut down’ the issue or energy outflow, in an attempt to ‘cool off’ what will end up being the subject of FM tensions. Anything you feel overwhelmed by or find suddenly ‘cut off’ likely signals what will end up being hashed out at the Full Moon, and in the days after.

The Full Moon for May falls at 1 Sagittarius 13 at 2:14 PM PDT on the 21st, closely conjoined Mars in retrograde; the effect then is that the Full Moon perfects and in its aftermath Earth, Mars, and Moon draw ever-closer to one another, suggesting a period of a few days over which the Full Moon effects may unfurl, where we may learn something, or expand our horizons (both Sagittarius), and so fulfill the FM promise.

With generous orbs we also see the Full Moon opposes Venus and Vesta, and since anything opposing a Full Moon is automatically conjoined the Sun, this tells us that what occurs during and following the FM is most likely rooted in matters of relationship, either those involving home and mate, or those involving what we love and dedicate our life energy to, with potential for involvement of assets in the relationship/ dedication mix–and as everyone knows, there can be quite a clash over where one may put one’s effort and attention, as a limited number of hours in a day forces choices: do we choose our causes or our relationships? Do we choose what pays with Love or Money? Even those of us who find a balance will continually be adjusting for the ebb and flow of energy and need. This FM and the period that directly follows may challenge us to decide what we’re going to do (Mars) about that balance. Be prepared, as the voice of the ego (Mars) will be at least as strong in the equation, and maybe more so, as what we love and are dedicated to (Venus, Vesta).

We’re stretching our orbs when we count Pallas as square the Full Moon, but as this creates a T-square with the oppositions, it pays to note what it’s telling us: that what’s smart and/ or practical may conflict with the way we’re seeing and weighing options–we may be allowing the ego too much say. We can also count the FM as the midpoint of a close Zeus-Pluto square, which implies developments will deal with tensions surrounding change to the ambition and desire picture. And, minor aspects, semi-squares from Black Moon Lilith and Juno (which are conjoined in Scorpio) to the FM suggest what occurs is propelled more than a little by issues of anger, denial, or empowerment that have been hidden, and now come clear.

‘Among the Waves’ Ivan Aivazovsky 1897 {{PD}}

The Sabian Symbol for the Full Moon is, ‘White-capped Waves Display The Power Of Wind Over Sea’. We have an interplay of elements here, emotion (Water) and intellect (Air), and perhaps need to keep in mind that neither should prevail; in the image we see their interaction, the way the intellect can buffet the emotions. It’s a reconciliation we want, one that accommodates, as much as possible, both emotional and achievement-oriented needs.

For a Full Moon we also look to the Sabian for the Sun, in order to know something of the origins of the current Lunar situation: ‘Santa Claus Furtively Filling Stockings Hanging In Front Of a Fireplace’ This suggests that Full Moon events, no matter how they make us face things we’d rather not, or that we feel force choices that reveal a little more Self-interest than we’re comfortable showing to others, actually deliver a gift, one that gives us a venue for energy expression (the fireplace) that is much truer to ourselves.

6-8 May 2016 New Moon in Taurus: The Seed of Change

Jean-François Millet - 'Spring' c1868 {{PD}}

Jean-François Millet – ‘Spring’ c1868 {{PD}}

Friday the 6th as the day begins on the West coast we are in approach to the conjunction of Sun and Moon in Taurus–and that sense of anticipation may overshadow a couple of other aspects perfecting at this time. The reality picture may be startling in its ability to empower us–who’d ah thunk, right?! Here the facts of what is (Saturn in Sagittarius) accommodate, support, and perhaps give focus to matters where we can get down to the Truth, and thereby gain influence, situational strength, and/ or the emotional fortitude to dig deep and address those aforementioned facts. We can get a clear view of our ambition and desire picture at this time, and can see just where it needs modification and revision–and we can also see the ambition agenda of others, and so gain better understanding of them, if we care to look (Saturn nov Juno, Sun qnx Zeus)

The New Moon occurs at 12:30 PM Pacific time at 16 Taurus 41. A New Moon is a seed moment, a beginning, and in Taurus this might be quite literal: a moment of conception related to the House of the natal chart in which it falls. In the 3rd, we may get an idea, in the 12th we may view something come to consciousness, in the 5th or 8th, we may get a baby–so check where it falls for you, for maximum safety! Of course, new beginnings can take in a lot of territory; and we must look at the conception in light of not just the initial placement of the event, but also according to what aspects it makes, and the implications of the Sabian for the degree where it falls. Taurus is naturally fecund, but the form that fertility takes is very specific to the individual and where this event falls in the natal chart.

On the larger scene, the New Moon forms apex to a Finger of God with base of Zeus-Saturn, suggesting that what begins at this point in time is the direct product of our ambitions and desires in the material world. Aha! Again with the suggestion that what we’ve aimed for, lusted for, even, in our physical reality is what drives the New Moon manifestation. Well, this is getting interesting.

New Moon in Taurus May 2016

If we stretch our standards a bit, we see the way the New Moon trines the midpoint of transiting Jupiter and the current North Node, signalling that the event somehow relates to our place on the social scene, and that it will affect life direction–so it takes on an added, serious tone–and if we treat this point (made up of Jupiter and the NN) as meaningful, we can use it to fill in an Earth Grand Trine with the NM and Pluto, suggesting that what the New Moon brings is a kind of destruction, transformation, or re-birth to our social role and the direction we’re headed in life that makes for a new beginning–but what does that beginning look like?

'Judith' Vincenzo Catena c1625 {{PD}}

‘Judith’ Vincenzo Catena c1625 {{PD}}

The Sabian for the event is, ‘A Symbolical Battle Between “Swords” And “Torches”‘ Strength, the ability to force, punitive energy, symbolic judgment, physical means of deciding, ‘killing’, or severing, wrestle with enlightened energies, ones that light the way or offer a wider view, that illuminate, that can perhaps burn, and so destroy with their insight–but that have the disadvantage of carrying no ‘doing’ energy, which is really what this contest is about: whether we will take an active role, or a hopeful, enlightened, but possibly materially ineffective one. In this instance, we may face the seductive energy of knowing, versus the call to do, with either choice applying to our identity. The question may become, ‘Do you want to be right, ‘in the know’, but not a player? Or do you want to shape things, make the choices, but not be privy to the bigger picture, the right or wrong, until after the fact?’ Not an easy question to answer, as each side has its advantages, and its problems.

'Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose', 1885-86 John Singer Sargent {{PD}}

‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’, 1885-86 John Singer Sargent {{PD}}

Today’s word image is Solar lanterns winking on across a garden as dusk falls. The Sun, at just the right distance from our planet, makes all life possible, and we can feel its presence even at night, in the breeze through the trees, the emerging nocturnal animals, the reflected light bounced to us by the Moon. At a New Moon we are without that nighttime light, and the world can seem a pretty dark and forbidding place, until the light of the Moon ‘returns’.

Maybe this image is about realizing that everything has its cycles, its seasons, and that if we’re in a ‘dark’ one now, all we really have to do is wait–and there’s the suggestion of unseen forces, such as the warmed earth that helps push that breeze, or the way the nocturnal animals hid from the sun’s glare all day, that suggest something vital and ‘warm’ moving behind the scenes, exerting an influence, moving things along.
