Jan Stanisławski “Beehives in the Ukraine”, c. 1895 {{PD}}

First, two words on the Mars-Pluto square, which perfected on the 6th: calm down. Those who suffer the most under this influence are the deniers of their own anger, the trashers of egos and the Will of others (just to see them burn), the ones who insist it’s their way or the highway, the Self-destructive, the blamers, the finger-pointers, the enraged. The viewpoint is one of looking out from the ‘I Am’ to the Other (Mars in Libra) and projecting one’s unprocessed upset, one’s urge to obliterate, one’s unformed and un- (or mis-) directed need to transform. How do we know if it’s us or them, you may ask? Simple: if you’re not angry, you won’t feel the need to blame or attack, and you will be able to allow others autonomy without a retributive ‘I told you so!’ (the Merc semi-square to Ceres of the 7th).

The 8th and 9th create conditions that unfortunately make us highly susceptible to the Mars-Pluto energy, as other bodies embrace facets of it and make us think we have a perfectly good reason to be indignant or aggressive. We see authorities, those who believe they should be in charge, and those of a maternal nature heavily influenced by what they themselves have ignored or denied about circumstances, as well as by those times they’ve experienced injustice that they never acknowledged (Ceres trine Black Moon Lilith), and they don’t hold back communicating this (Merc parallel Ceres and square the Nodal axis) which can have consequences that exert their own influence on life direction. This is a free-flow of tortured and frustrated energies that we may not even be aware of; and the individuality urge, the want to rebel or be seen as different or independent (Sun trine Uranus) catches a ride on this, making upsets, surprises, and accidents more than a little possible–but also offering us the energy and focus to be truly original in our offerings, and to create change that’s most suitable to our own unique viewpoint.

Then there’s the way Juno enters Scorpio and Mercury enters Capricorn and sextiles Juno, suggesting a fresh, raw take on our own empowerment situation and those communications that feel solid, in the sense that they seem to express every fear we have about boundaries, being held back, and being overburdened with duties, sidetracked by rules or obligations, or fenced out of opportunities to expand. We seem determined to find the hurt in situations (Sun square Chiron); it’s up to us to become aware of our own assertive urge, to sense the edge on our thoughts and feelings, and then actively address it all with a conscious intent to do no harm, and possibly even to heal.

Forecast for the 7th has been enhanced and can be found in the previous post. Take the poll below–and answer honestly, nobody’s looking!

I hope your week gets off to a great start. See and Buy my books here and keep an eye out for ‘The Venus Collection’, coming soon. I’d like to go back to recommending my fellow astrologers on a regular basis; to kick that off: If you’re not a regular visitor to Chirotic Journal, you should be; Jeremy Neal offers some of the best advanced yet still accessible discussion of astrological theory and practice around. See the sting of Venus Into Scorpio; and have a great Tuesday and Wednesday!

'The Party at the Tavern' Luis Ricardo Falero 1879 {{PD}}

‘The Party at the Tavern’ Luis Ricardo Falero 1879 {{PD}}

On the 5th we can be enormously creative and inspired, if we are willing to ‘start anew’ in some sense, and if we are willing to modify the ways in which, or to what, we dedicate our energies. For one person this can translate as being flexible about commitments, for another it’s more about bringing standards into alignment with reality, and for a third it could be about committing resources to make ‘it’ happen. The important thing is our willingness to take an active role in what we dream, desire, and aim for–if we do that, all else falls into place (Perfecting today: Venus qnx Vesta and parallel Neptune, Sun semi-square Juno)

The 6th may be almost magically positive and at the same time problematic, all at once. We have a genius for gaining Love or Money, even as it somehow hurts; and yet action seems destructive and serves to actively block that expansion. We think more by instinct and are subject to the influence of our ‘blind spot’ material (which we of course won’t recognize!), but despite all this, where we put our attention and choose to act, things turn out well. Weather the contrary influences without investing too much in the negative ones, and you’ll be much more likely to come out smiling (Mars square Pluto and contraparallel Jupiter, Venus novile Jupiter and sesq Chiron, Merc qnx Sedna, Sun sextile Mars)

The 7th many of us are back-to-work–with only minor questions of power, influence, territory, and the probability of having to negotiate on the agenda. Enjoy the relatively low-key day, though be prepared to hear, read, and experience communications that may challenge your personal authority or right to meddle–just don’t respond with ego (no need to feel threatened, as nothing will come of this), and no problems will arise (Mercury semi-square Ceres)

And there’s more, with this late update on and for the 7th: the Moon and Venus meet today in Scorpio, suggesting that if we want to get to the Truth, the best we can hope for is to intuit or feel the emotional one of any situation; the facts may stay just out of reach, too tainted by issues of power and dominance (Merc-Ceres) to be clear.

If you’d like to order a book for the weekend, please do so before 7 AM on the 5th–after that there will be a delay in order fulfillment, with all orders being caught up late Pacific time on the 6th. Thank you, and enjoy your weekend!

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot - 'Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld' 1860 {{PD}}

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot – ‘Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld’ 1860 {{PD}}

Here’s something we need to get clear on: Venus is not, on her own, a sweetness-and-light kind of energy; when we portray her that way, we conveniently forget that she signifies jealousy, envy, a particular kind of want that’s like lust, and a gluttony (literal or symbolic) that desires whatever it desires, without boundaries or end, and this on top of standing for Love, Money, Beauty, talents, and all other assets. She is appetite, a kind of monstrous need, monstrous because it doesn’t know satiation or restraint. Sign placement can offer those things, put reins on expression, give the appetite form, focus, and purpose–and in Scorpio we see a Venus that wants to know the Truth, that carries a vortex of passion crushing as a black hole, that holds at her receptive center a mystery, and a question: What lies beneath?

Scorpio beckons us to go below consciousness, to look beneath the day-to-day, to venture into unexplored or hidden or even denied territory, and Venus is want, she is desire, she looks to bond, to blend, to cooperate, and so drives that attempt to, in the modern vernacular, hack the Scorpionic darkness. Here she becomes concerned with what is behind the curtain, under the polite invitation or excuse, curious about the attitude lurking beneath the etiquette and the passionate heart hidden by the prim, sugary smile. Venus in Scorpio sees the beauty in death, decay, in trash and what’s used, discarded, broken; she also sees beauty (and finds love) in what’s ugly. If we were to name a Venus in Scorpio fairy tale, it might be Beauty and the Beast, or anything where the discerning eye sees potential in what others have agreed to overlook, to declare useless, valueless, vulgar, obscene.

Venus in Scorpio always reminds me of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice; it’s a story of dealing with the darkness that tells us the only way to retrieve your Love from the confines of Hades (the personal one found in the negative Venusian traits, located in the caves of Scorpio or the contact of Venus to Pluto) is restraint, in Self-discipline, looking only toward what’s ahead, as to look back will cause you to lose what you want most, a future filled with light, that knows loss and so extraordinarily values what has been saved.

It’s interesting that beautiful young Orpheus had immense power and charm derived from his singing and playing of the lyre, with these being related to that other Venus sign, Taurus, ruler of the throat and voice. Eurydice is the woman he loved, whom he married and who died on their wedding day, bitten by a viper as she walked with her maids through a field. Orpheus mourned, but out of desolation came the desire to go to the Underworld himself, to rescue his love. He felt he could play for Pluto and Proserpina and in moving them persuade them to allow Eurydice to return to the world. He believed his playing would be powerful in Hell in the same way it drew all living things to him on Earth, and even moved objects in Nature–and it was. Milton says that Orpheus’ performance, “Drew iron tears down Pluto’s cheek, and made Hell grant what Love did seek.”

There was one condition: Orpheus could lead Eurydice out, but he was not to look back at her until they had reached the surface. In symbolic terms this is the restraint and Self-discipline that is required for any safe journey to and return from the Underworld; it is what’s required to survive in our current form the entry into and exit from a world that’s not our own, and most importantly, to successfully bring back something of worth, something we love. Even Pluto’s bride, Proserpina/ Persephone, was warned that she would be unable to return to the surface if she ate while in Hades, as she was still alive when taken there–and she ate 6 pomegranate seeds, binding her for 6 months of the year to the darkness.

It was a long path that Orpheus took to climb out pf Hell, one that wound through what seemed like an endless series of Scorpionic caves, and he had to trust that Eurydice was following behind. He was told that no matter what, he wasn’t to look at her until both were completely above ground. Orpheus climbed and eventually the blackness turned to twilight, and then to a gray like sunrise, and Orpheus was consumed with fear that Eurydice wasn’t following, that she might need help–he heard nothing at all behind him–and he turned to look at his love, only to see her disappear from the mouth of the cave, returned to the land of the dead–and of course, he was barred from a second foray as long as he lived; entry to the Underworld is unnatural for the living, and to consciously pass between the two is a privilege the gods never grant twice.

On the 4th we have, besides Venus’ entry to Scorpio, a Mercury-Jupiter square. This alerts us to the potential for exaggerated communications, and that our own thoughts could run away from us, blown into something impossible to realize. It could also promise some difficulty accepting facts, conflict over beliefs, and both criticism and discovery, with the potential for confusion as to which is the source of what, as each body sits in a sign ruled by the other.

Parmigianino (Attrib.) – ‘Ritratto di un giovane uomo’ {{PD}}

Our own attention flows toward ourselves and our empowerment, which is good after yesterday’s focus on the Other (and what we want from them); it’s all about our priorities and what we find sacred and so must take action on (Vesta enters Aries). We have an almost magical ability to make things happen on our own terms, to be effective in whatever role we hold, and to deliver payback in both positive and negative forms when needed (Saturn novile Juno). We benefit from containing ourselves, from Self-discipline and from our own efforts, especially in relationships or in finances, and we see real-world rewards as a result (Venus novile Saturn). This applies to all, except for those who refuse to acknowledge their anger or to address those things they’ve ignored or failed to recognize, especially about themselves; these people will likely meltdown in one form or another, confronted with undeniable knowledge or new-found facts that challenge their beliefs about their identity, their relationships, or their ‘worth’ in some capacity (Sagittarian Sun sxt Black Moon Lilith).

Ladies have shared their wardrobes since time immemorial. Attributed to Guy Head -‘ Juno Borrowing the Girdle of Venus’ c1771 {{PD}}

Venus conjoins Juno in Libra, and we may see a number of manifestations operating in relationships, typically as a statement of ‘I Am’ in relation to one or more ‘Others’: we could see a love of status, someone ‘married’ to their position, a cooperative situation benefiting one or both parties in finances, offering support, or taking responsibility, empowerment through Love or assets, aesthetic empowerment (that is, taking one’s Art into one’s own hands, or conversely, finally allowing others to contribute what they can to a creation to make it complete), diplomacy meant to gain the upper hand or to express the individual Will, falling in Love with the mate (for the first time or again), enjoying a ‘honeymoon’ of one kind or another, two women, one powerful in her womanhood and one reliant on status to make her impact, in a male’s life the ‘ideal’ mate (according to his own Juno placement) could be introduced, finally getting one’s material due from the mate, or even getting revenge over a betrayal or desertion. Love in the largest sense could imbue one’s position of empowerment; wherever one holds sway, commands, or holds powerful status, one could find Love has become the basis for exercise of that power. There are many ways this could appear, and they are almost certainly of a ‘high concept’ form; we may not see them, but we surely can feel them.

But it’s vital to note that Venus, even as she meets Juno, is parallel Vesta. Love aligned with our highest values and to what we dedicate our lives is a very good thing; it can’t help but keep us attuned to the highest Venusian vibration to which we are open. This, too, is important: to realize that we only get what we’ll let in. We can wish for Love, but if our highest values are centered on dedicating our assets and attention to expressing our talents (Venus), or to making money (Venus), or to the Arts (Venus), we may inadvertently keep Love at bay, believing deep inside that it could distract us. Knowing what we are dedicated to (Vesta) is instrumental in knowing where our energies are actually going, and often tells us why certain desires aren’t being met. Today’s a day when this can be explored, both by examining where our Venus is actively being applied, and by using the mirror of others (Libra) to reflect back to us what we are really honoring, what we’re really engaged with.

The mind can assist this quest, as Mercury sextiles Zeus, making us think along lines that are compatible with our ambitions and desires. As long as we can discern precisely how our values show up in our lives, we can apply the mentality to moving toward goals and dreams; it can make for a lovely meshing of energies that can carry us much farther than naked muscle or mind ever could.

Find where your energies are going, and to what you’re really dedicated in life, with my new book on Vesta–and have a great Wednesday!

Elliott Daingerfield – Drama on the mountain top (1905) {{PD}}

On the 30th the Warrior/ Ego meets that which will not be controlled or told what to do, or that which has been ignored or denied and refuses to be any longer; what do we get? You can imagine: this may bring monumental expressions of temper, the energy and Willingness to fight for a cause or to defend something important to the individual, or it could mean we act from anger or motivated by things we are ignoring or in denial about. Add to that the way relationships or financial matters may be influenced by buried instincts or our ‘blind spot’ (that material we carry and that motivates us but about which we’re unaware, even though others see it clearly moving and driving us). It’s a day when, if we are watching, others show what makes them ‘tick’, why they do and choose what they do, while we may tip our own hand to others through the very same means. Our best bet may be to focus on what we find unjust or would like to exert ourselves to change, and so address it; remembering that we are one person and choosing our targets based on our own ability to affect things is the most effective course we can take (Mars conjoined Black Moon Lilith, Venus quincunx Sedna)

This carries over to the 1st, with the added problem that our thoughts are tinged by hurt, spontaneous or rebellious, and decidedly unwise right now. What we hear might surprise us, and might wound, and with Mars still all riled up we could easily go on a rampage. Our best course today is to put our attention on those areas that are part of our ‘territory’, that we are responsible for, and to exercise our power and prerogatives according to our natural position, status, and attributes. Not glamorous, but it is a chance to be highly effective, on our game, and to excel at what we do, to do it very well–and that’s no small feat (Pallas square and Mars parallel Black Moon Lilith, Mercury trine Uranus and square Chiron, Sun sextile Ceres).

The 28th we may find our wisdom, our originality, and what we want (in the values sense) in a contest with our ‘blind spot’ material, our need for empowerment, and/ or our outright ambitions or lust! It may be a dizzying feeling, like walking along the edge of a cliff, with spontaneity that we judge risky beckoning at every step. What we need to understand is that, though our wants are inspired (or tainted) by dreams, fantasy, and ideals, they’re also aligned much more closely than we suspect with our ultimate ambitions and desires. That means we can trust those urges a little more than we might otherwise be inclined to. It doesn’t mean the impulse should necessarily be followed, but it should be inspected for what it says about our current aims and desire nature. Be yourself today (whatever that means to you) and some form and sense of empowerment will be the natural result (Pallas sesq Sedna, Uranus contraparallel and Sun novile Juno, Venus parallel Zeus, sesq Neptune, and semi-square Saturn)

By the 29th we’re taking a hard look at reality, and we may focus too keenly on what appears to be holding us back; our response may be impractical and too aggressive as a consequence. Where we really need to be looking is at the ways in which we are unthinkingly trashing our dreams, ignoring our instincts, and refusing to honor what we know to be wise. It’s not the circumstances of the reality picture that are the problem, it’s the way we insist on processing and responding to that reality. If we can look unflinchingly but calmly (that’s the key) at where and who we are, it’s easy to see what we can do to make desired progress, or deal with what’s stopping us (Mars square and contraparallel Pallas, and sesq Sedna, Venus contraparallel Sedna, Sun conjunct Saturn and square Neptune)

26-27 November 2015 Reality Check

The 26th is a big day this year in the US, as families/ those we love congregate to share a meal; sometimes this is the warmest of gatherings where gratitude truly reigns, and sometimes tensions building not just through the year but through a lifetime surface, bringing what was known on ‘Seinfeld’ as ‘the airing of grievances’. Whether you celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday or not, are in some other part of the world or right here in the good ol’ US of A, it’s important to express our thanks to each other and the Universe on a regular basis. So what will tomorrow’s get-together hold? A reality check, and an almost miraculous chance to change long-time upsets, to spin that resentful straw into relationship gold.

Saturn perfects a square to Neptune, suggesting that fantasies won’t be sustainable in the face of reality–and that’s a very good thing, as the more clear we are on What Is, the more accurately we can shape and respond to events. This aspect also shows us what may be inhibiting our creativity, and what blocks may stand in the way to realizing spiritual ideals. Be open to the realizations the tension between these two can offer; to ignore (Saturn) our need to materialize (Saturn) our creative nature, our ideals, and the better world we visualize (all Neptune) is to miss the opportunity within the conflict.

Relationships will benefit by taking an approach that quite deliberately puts the Other first. I’m not talking about deferring to others so much as refusing to think in terms of ‘I want’; think instead in terms of ‘what we like together’. For those dealing with finances on the ‘morrow we may see erratic, spur-of-the-moment choice or rebellion against obligations incur unexpected costs–so avoid taking the unexpected (or even innovative) option where money’s concerned, and this even and most especially if someone else urges us to (Venus in Libra contra-parallel Uranus in Aries)

Where we put our attention will be the place we can discover effective means of changing the course of things. If a relationship needs improvement, if resentments need burying, if bad blood needs purifying, it can be done tomorrow–just as long as we accept that we actually have the power to do it (Sagittarian Sun novile and parallel Pluto in Cap)

The 27th holds some minor contacts that hold major pitfalls: Sag Mercury sextiles Black Moon Lilith and semi-squares Juno, both in Libra. This suggests that our minds will be on all those things long ignored or denied in relationship, or that have enraged us–possibly prompted by those changes of the 26th–and the tendency may be to feel things are repaired in such a way that we can honestly speak our minds about our feelings and the way these affected us–but we would be wrong. We may damage our just-repaired relationships and psyches by dwelling on and repeating, like an incantation, the negative. Think about it, but don’t share it, and realizing it no longer is, let it go–that’s the only way to reclaim the personal power that was lost to anger and bitterness, and to move forward, rather than sliding back into a mire, in those just-rescued relationships.

Viktor Vasnetsov ‘Snegurochka’ 1898 {{PD}}

Today our words and actions have the full faith and credit of our personal power behind them–and that means we’re only effective to the extent we’ve become, to paraphrase Carl Rogers, our potentialities. How well we have actualized what could be within us will determine our impact on others and our surroundings at this point in time. Any empowerment we’ve achieved pays off; and strangely enough, what’s smart may be to ignore those things we want to avoid or that make us angry (Mercury sextile Ceres and Mars, Venus parallel Juno, Pallas contraparallel Black Moon Lilith).

The Full Moon of the 25th is at 2:44 Pacific time (PST) at 3 Gemini 20, and in order to see the sweep of the Full Moon energies we have to allow a larger orb relative to what we usually do; that makes for a FM that’s part of an Air Grand Trine with Mars and Ceres, and that involves the FM in a T-square with the Sun-Saturn-Mercury conjunction (with the latter drawn in by contact to Saturn), with an arm made by Neptune, and a sesquiquadrate to Zeus.

In Gemini a Full Moon speaks of completion of thought, ideas, communications, or movement of some kind, generally focused in matters of the House where the culmination falls. We either see the matter fully formed, or we see it end, and in either case, the Gemini FM opens the way for the ‘next step’ mentally. The Air Grand Trine reinforces this and elaborates upon it: what comes is a balanced view of action and power. We see what our efforts have wrought, and how we need to adjust the action-power balance to get what we’re thinking about/ desiring (and this brings up the very important point, that what we think about, whether we acknowledge it or not, is what we ultimately are aiming for–no matter what we believe our goals really are). This Full Moon reminds us of this, as well as the fact that we are required to both express our power and to make an effort in order to achieve.

The T-square is a kind of reiteration of the GT/ FM message, with a further answer as to outlet: we see the material results of our thoughts, our Beingness (Sun-Mercury)–they have indeed created our reality (Saturn)–and we’re offered a way to release the tension through a purely creative act (Neptune), likely through matters of the House where Neptune is now transiting, or through the House where it sits natally.

Let’s start with the Sabian for the Sun: ‘A Little Child Learning To Walk With The Encouragement Of His Parents’ This suggests that what ends for us is a static state, or at least one where we were not as empowered as we now can become; we’re now capable of taking our first steps in a new direction, one that has a purpose integral to our expression (of which walking is symbolic). The Sun’s Sabian at a Full Moon is indicative of the energy that caused, created, or preceded the Full Moon situation–so this FM is a point where we are ready to move forward in some important way.

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘Holly And Mistletoe Reawaken Old Memories Of Christmas’ This hints that sensory input (through the nerves, memory, and lungs, all Gemini) will transport us to a previous ‘season’–not necessarily a winter one, but certainly, something invested with a distinctive atmosphere that makes for distinctive recall. Those memories will inform both what concludes or culminates right now, and what we take as a next step; what we remember may urge us to recreate that atmosphere, to figuratively re-visit a time and place, or at least to evoke it, in the now–and of course the question to ask ourselves is, ‘What is it that I want to bring back, re-live, or re-create?’ We know that’s probably a feeling–name that, and you’ll know what you’re aiming for.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

‘Illusion’ Henry Brown Fuller 1895 {{PD}}

. . . but so do actions and the reality picture itself–nothing is accurately perceived, and yet everything seems sharp and clear to the physical senses. This creates a ‘can’t believe our eyes’ situation, in the way we may lack both belief and understanding about what’s before us. Identities are, not exactly fluid, more like ragged, with sudden facets that no one anticipates, including each of us–and yet Self-knowledge, knowing who we are, may be the only thing that saves us, and there’s no doubt that egos are feeling powerful and ready to act. The real danger here is that we’ll insist on doing and find later that our perceptions were skewed, just as our results will inevitably be. Creative and imaginative energies may fare best, as there may be serendipitous positives that bloom from our misperceptions. I would counsel not to take any big steps today, but I have the feeling many of us will go forward anyway, and that’s likely okay, just as long as we’re aware that soon enough we’ll discover how what we’ve done differs from our vision of what we’ve done–and so offers some surprises of its own (Perfecting today: Juno qnx Sedna, Vesta opp NN, Mars qnx Neptune and trine Ceres, Venus conj Zeus, Mercury conj Saturn and square Neptune, Sun sesq Uranus)
