Sign Relationships, the Quincunx, and Extreme Degree Meanings

A delicate balance must be achieved when dealing with the contrasts of adjacent or quincunx sign energies. Vermeer c1663 ‘Woman With a Balance’ {{PD-Art}} via Wikimedia Commons

In our quest to access all possible meanings inherent in each sign of the Zodiac, we shouldn’t overlook how the relationships among signs have an effect on meaning. Specifically, we can look at how each sign has a meaning that is a reaction to the one preceding it. This is an especially helpful point of view to have in at least three instances: 1) when we have a placement at 00 degrees of a sign, 2) when we have a placement at 29 degrees of a sign, and 3) when we are talking about the relationship between placements that sit in neighboring signs, or those in signs that are quincunx each other.

For example, Mercury at 00 Libra implies that the communication skills are at the beginning of a journey that will orient expression toward diplomacy, fairness, and balance. These are the impulses; they are in reaction to what came before, the experience of Virgo. The Mercury-centered lessons of Virgo are ones of discernment, critical assessment, and communication as service. We can see a Libra Mercury as a set of values and attitudes that spring from experiences of a Virgoan nature, especially from experiences of a negative Virgoan nature. The impulse toward diplomacy may spring from the one-sided nature of criticism, and from the desire to put the Virgo penchant for communication as service into a situation that acknowledges the rights and contributions of the other party, while the Libran desire for fairness may spring from the experience of receiving criticism.

What about when we have a placement at 29 degrees? This is a situation where we have experienced the gamut of manifestations available in the sign, and there is pressure for the individual to ‘finish up’ the lessons of that placement in that sign–this means that one is on the verge of embracing the values of the next sign in the sequence. For instance, what if one has Neptune in the 29th degree of Libra? Likely there is a sense of being very familiar with disillusion in love and delusion in relationship, even from a very young age. There will also be a strong understanding of spirituality in partnership, and the way in which imagination and fantasy can have both positive and negative influences in relationships will also be inherently understood. There may be a certain feeling of dissatisfaction in this knowledge, a feeling that there’s nothing anyone can tell them in this arena. There may be a mental ‘reaching toward’ the ideas of deep, intense communion with Neptunian energies, of the desire to ‘dig up dirt’ (Scorpio) rather than ‘smooth things over’ (Libra). One will be restless with Neptunian energies; of course, as with all planetary positions, the house placement will tell us much about how these experiences will manifest.

When we have placements that are semi-sextile, or quincunx, we have some idea that they have a relationship, and the aspect lets us know the (uneasy) nature of their alliance. But what about when we have placements in adjacent, or quincunx, signs, and they have no ‘formal’ relationship to each other? Then we can look at the way they fail to communicate, and why, by noting the natures of the signs. For example, let’s look at Mars in Gemini and Venus in Cancer–how do they see each other? Mars is likely to funnel assertive energies through communication (especially words/ talk), to exercise the ego energies through networking and social outlets; Venus is ahead of Mars in the Zodiac, and has brought values and relationship concerns into the Cancerian sphere. Venus says, ‘Relationships can’t be just talk, just flitting from occasion to occasion, they must be caring and nurturing,’ while Mars says, ‘My ego wants things light and social; why must relationships be so smothering?’ This means, generally, that Mars and Venus will always be slightly at odds in expression, symbolizing disparities in the personality and the successful manifestation of each of the involved energies.

Placements in signs that are quincunx each other suffer a similar awkwardness in relationship. For instance, Sun in Pisces and Pluto in Libra will never quite express ‘in sync’ with each other. The Sun will be embracing the Universe, accepting all, emphasizing the spirituality inherent in every Being, while Pluto watches from afar and cautions: relationships can be destructive! Negative urges do not support a Oneness of All! Be serious! Suspect everybody!

Noting the relationships between signs can add a little something extra to our understanding of our placements, and as well can help us understand why some energies express with more harmony to neighboring placements than do others. Briefly, Aries is the ego/ individuality rebelling from the All is One stance of Pisces; Taurus says, it’s not just about me, it’s about my things and environment; Gemini says, don’t be so wrapped up in the material, lets talk! while Cancer pleads, don’t be so frivolous, nurturing and love must be sincere; Leo says, good grief, let’s get back to the Star of the show; Virgo says, quit being such an ego-maniac, go help out, and fix everything; Libra puts the other before the Self, and the whole thing better be pretty! while Scorpio says, I can’t make nice any longer, let’s dig up the bodies! Sagittarius says, I can’t live in a cave anymore, let’s get out and explore; Capricorn insists one sit still and get serious; Aquarius wants no restraints whatsoever, unless the group says so, and Pisces says, you can’t be one in the group, you must be the group!

Dance With Neptune, Watch Venus Kiss the Sun

If you felt Neptune’s retrograde at all, it was probably something of a heavy thump, the gentle placement of leaden boots onto your feet, the pulling down of a woolly, brain-stifling cap over your head, the settling of a thick blanket over you that traps humidity and causes a vague, unreachable itch, or, for a few, feeling like the heart is a huge thing, turning over with a thud just under the breastbone. It’s more likely to arrive in a feeling of foreboding or nameless weight that sneaks in during the daily routine than it is to make for the kind of distinct effect other energies do: ‘before Neptune’s retro’ and ‘after Neptune’s retro’ are not so easily or clearly defined. This behemoth turned around at 3 Pisces 09, with the most immediate shift felt via natal placements that he is either squatting on or aspecting by hard angle; you might also feel an alteration in the trade winds buffeting the House in the natal chart with Pisces on the cusp, or perhaps the settling in of something dense and obscuring related to those matters. But in those instances of conjunction or aspect of Neptune to the natal, you will likely sense or be presented with a change in the creative flow, imaginative abilities, to the fantasy life, or to the ‘tune’ you normally dance to in this life area. Changes are not necessarily negative, especially if you have Neptune retro natally–then you might feel ‘back in the swim’ in a way you haven’t lately–but even if you are suddenly more comfortable with the flow of things, it can be disorienting (a Neptune specialty!) and even one who’s celebrating wants to avoid happily twirling through the fog and right off a cliff.

Today is Venus’ visible transit across the Sun, a startling phenomenon that will not be possible to observe from our vantage point here on Earth again until 2117. Don’t look directly at it–just as with an eclipse, you must protect your eyes from unkind consequences–and there are many places online to watch, should you be in a clouded area (as I am!) Astrologically, this is simply a Sun/ Venus conjunction–it’s the angle that makes it special, as it’s allowing us to see dainty Venus with the furnace of the Sun as a backdrop–but it is a meeting of retro Venus and Sun in Gemini, suggesting at the very least that the attention spotlight is on a re-consideration of relationships and/ or finances. Look for a denouement of sorts, in spite of the fact that the retro period isn’t yet over; expect some kind of ending, conclusion, wrap-up, or resolution that will probably surprise or enlighten in some important way.

After the eclipse: What Now?

Did you feel it? The answer is probably yes and no–this eclipse is both particularly stimulating and elusive to conscious perception–and so we enter this eclipse period (active through to the next eclipse set, in six months) both excited (in a way I would almost describe as occurring at the molecular level!) and harboring a distinct sense of mystery about what’s to come (and what’s happening right now), a near-mystic state wherein each of us mentally and perceptually rests somewhere on a continuum between unconscious and confused all the way to centered and enlightened. This enlightenment is of a very specific kind, a knowing that does not involve words or concepts, but that is more of an emotional feeling and sensory feeling experience. It surrounds us, it is us, it envelopes us, and our ability to be at peace with this, a kind of inspiration (almost literally in the ancient sense of ‘to breathe in’) that is like standing deep in the Cosmic flow. Our comfort with this atmosphere is what’s in question over the next half-year, and we will need to ask ourselves, what will we do with this, what will we make of it?

What we see in the present, though, at least in terms of what it suggests about our future, is in one way or another misleading; this we must grapple with on our own. Some advice from ECLIPSE Weekly Aspect Digest:

With the Gemini/ Sagittarius axis energized at this time, it becomes especially important to sort what’s ‘real’ from the mass of information and possibilities included in what we think, what we’re told, what we believe, what Faith tells us is so, and what we learn or experience from our naturally limited, first-person viewpoint. This eclipse brings that challenge into focus, and requires only that we know who we are, in order to handle what comes successfully. To see ourselves as a Warrior for our own Will (which usually causes us so much trouble!) is precisely what is needed in order to remember who we are in the face of projections about where we’re headed that are misleading, that we misunderstand or misinterpret, or that we don’t experience at all (not seeing the shadow of the Lunar Sabian image).

Your Weekend 1-3 June 2012: ‘Healing Possibilities’

‘Healing Simon Peter’s mother-in-law’ from the Codex Egberti 10th century {{PD}}

For Friday the 1st of June:

4:30 PM brings the Scorpio Moon quincunx Uranus and soon thereafter sextile Pluto. Emotions may be radicalized by what we experience; feelings run deep, and soon are launched on a trajectory toward transformation or destruction. Make sure you are the one taking aim and guiding the Plutonian effort. By 8-ish PM PDT we see whether that choice healed or hurt (Moon trine Chiron).

For Saturday the 2nd:

The 2nd is a sparse aspect day, with the only new one formed a quincunx of Saturn to Sedna. This suggests we will sense a need for adjustment to our physical environment, but will be lost as to just what these changes should be! However, Chiron is still within sesquiquadrate of Saturn, and tells us that anything done to heal our surroundings (especially to aid Mother Nature, with Ceres so close to conjunction with Sedna) or to foster positive interaction between authorities and those in their charge, or between mother and child, is a good thing to do, especially if it involves accommodating a relationship by tailoring the physical realm to it.

And for the 3rd of June:

The 3rd sees Mercury trine Saturn and the Sun trine Zeus; agreements become solid, contracts materialize, words hold real weight, and we may find it easy to suppress ourselves or others, or be suppressed ourselves–and at the same time we are oh-so-aware of our ambitions and desires. It’s almost a given that our communications will shine with these wants, and so what we may see are a thousand permutations of those desires as they materialize or are taken away.

The new issue of ECLIPSE is out, featuring detailed analysis on the upcoming Lunar eclipse (the only place you’ll see eclipse info by me), commentary, and an aspect-by-aspect guide to your week starring all the usual players, plus Chiron, Sedna, Ceres, Juno, Pallas, Vesta, and Zeus! And a big Thank You to all who’ve so generously supported ECLIPSE and this blog!

A little taste of ECLIPSE:

June begins with a meeting of Mercury and Venus at 18 Gemini. This is a situation that may bring a flow of beautiful words, jealous talk, relationship gossip, or reward from contracts or communications. Coming in the midst of Venus retro, we may find the Venusian part of the meeting topsy-turvy; reward may be delayed, flow in an unexpected direction, relationships may yield surprising thoughts or exchanges, and contracts will likely not follow what’s written–with the possibility of litigation to follow.

A Little Something About Pluto and Finding Your Passion

Finding your passions in life might be a little like drinking from this fountain, according to this allegory of Love as a mystic and all-consuming experience. By Fragonard ‘The Fountain of Love’ c1785 {{PD-Art}}

This is from the most recent ECLIPSE (the new issue arrives in your email tonight Pacific time) and talks about the role of Pluto in understanding the nature of, and where to find, your passions in the natal chart:

Pluto: is the star in the passion universe simply because of his character; the intensity and depth inherent to the lord of the Underworld make him the essence of passion no matter what his contacts or sign placement. In the natal chart Pluto carries the part of us that is deadly serious, indeed, that registers life and death in our primal consciousness, that lets us know immediately when danger, or the need to walk the life-death-life line, comes into play. In Pluto we are all linked through those passions that are common to all human beings, the ones that drive our major choices, relationships, and that are similar to the life energy dedication of Vesta, but with a twist: where Vesta calls us to dedicate energy in a pure and Selfless way to a cause greater than ourselves, Pluto calls forward that life energy in fulfillment of personal, and often rather primitive, passions. We touch the greater Collective through the Plutonian similarities all humans share and, unlike with the other energies, all manifestations of Pluto are charged with passion, making it a consistent indicator of passion in the natal chart.

This is an excerpt from ECLIPSE Weekly Aspect Digest, your place for daily forecasts with all the planets and lights (you too, Pluto!) asteroids Chiron, Vesta, Juno, Pallas, Ceres, Sedna, and Zeus, and all the Lunar contacts–if you’re here daily, even a couple times a week, subscribe now! and get it delivered to your email every Thursday. Thank you, and have a great mid-week!

For the 29th: 4 PM PDT the Virgo Moon trines Sedna. It’s easy to forget our troubles; take the vacation any way you can get it. 10:30 PM PDT the Moon trines Jupiter and sextiles Juno. For some reason it’s much easier to identify with the powerful philanderer than it is to sympathize with the one who’s been wronged.  If you feel like this, just try not to express it, as you know it’s a terrible contradiction to decent (and by that I mean your) values–and nobody needs a shame hangover in the morning.

Void begins at 10:51 PM PDT; Moon enters Libra at 3:46 AM PDT of the 30th.

The 30th is the day we see Mercury trine Zeus and square Mars. Yikes! Ambition and desire will drive interaction and communication, and we won’t be reluctant to wield a hammer (or spear, or tongs, or tweezers, or stapler, or fork, or any other metal instrument) in our quest to get what we want. If very carefully guided, this could give a tremendous boost forward–but most of us are just not that good as drivers. 😦

25-28 May 2012: Your Weekend…

‘The Mountain Brook’ Albert Bierstadt 1863 {{PD-Art}}

. . . is a hot mess, as far as I can tell. Misunderstandings, confusion, nostalgia, good intentions, touchy feelings, conflicts with authorities (especially maternal figures), and talking past each other seem to be the ingredients of this four day period (including Friday and, in the US, Monday, Memorial Day), and these influences will be experienced stand-alone, combined, and re-combined, so that we are dealing with essentially the same stew of missed connections, hurt, contrariness, and kindnesses through the entire period. We do have the Sun/ Mercury in Superior Conjunction (‘Superior’ describes this as being the meeting between these two that occurs when Mercury is direct–‘Inferior’ applies to their meeting when Merc’s retrograde) on the 27th, which should bring to fruition something begun at the March 20-21st Inferior Conjunction. There’ll be a lot of talk, and though we’ll feel the message is of primary importance, what will cause the most trouble is not what we say but how we say it, as most everyone (ourselves included) will be poised to misread just about everything communicated. The important thing to remember may be that, though we’re feeling stressed and as if we must do in order to keep our heads above water, this is a misperception; all that’s really necessary is to relax and let the energy flow around us–in order to come through unscathed (and with psyches, relationships, and finances intact) we must be the stone, placed in the middle of the stream, that effortlessly parts the waters (Juno, Chiron, and Neptune, troublemakers all, posited now in Water).

A. Lambertsz van den Tempel c1667 {{PD-Art}}

From the just-out issue of ECLIPSE Weekly Aspect Digest/ Newsletter:

The 25th Mercury sextiles Pallas and squares Neptune, and the Sun conjuncts the South Node while Earth meets up with the North Node. Meet-ups of the Sun/ Earth axis with the Nodes can be startling; they offer us a society-wide reality check, a chance to see just exactly where we’re headed as group. We may have a good perspective on the social order at this time, and we’ll be more than willing to give advice on how others should improve things–but of course, we’ll be deluded, confused, misinformed, or living with our heads in the clouds, and so unaware of the ‘real’ situation. It’s an instance where our advice and practically-oriented thoughts are perceptive and ‘right’, but where there’s a disconnect that makes our musings impractical and irrelevant. It’s 20/20 hindsight *sigh*

ECLIPSE is out! You receive by subscription 4-5 issues each month of daily guidance (including Lunar aspects) and articles on theory and practice, at only $5 per month, and during May you get extra free months when you enroll–sign up now!

From ECLIPSE:

The 24th sees Merc enter Gemini. Finally our thinking has a chance to synch up with where our attention is going (the Sun). That’s a relief!

By about 2 AM PDT the Moon has moseyed to the midpoint of Mars/ Vesta–and that gives us an excellent vantage point for choosing what actions to take, as what we plan is likely to be in line with our highest values and priorities (and if you find yourself surprised by what you choose, a review of real priorities might be in order, as it’s much easier to get from A to B when we know where we are–nobody’s ever found their goal by following the road that leads from where they think they are to where they want to go!)
