Moon in Scorpio

The transiting Moon in the Scorpion’s sign adds depth to the atmosphere, so that those who are comfortable with emotion and with the way things are, are most ‘at home’ in the world right now; everyone else, the thinkers and doers and those ready for change may feel they’re moving through mud (or is it quicksand?) Just something to keep in mind during Luna’s journey–and of course this is the sign that holds part of the ancient Via Combusta (‘The Burning Way’). The Moon sited between 15 Libra and 15 Scorpio (Tropical) was considered a malefic placement in Horary, and some Horary Astrologers still use this in delineation. The reputation for this area may derive from fixed stars found there in ancient times, or from the way the Sun and Moon do not flourish in signs associated with the traditional malefics Saturn –Libra–and Mars–Scorpio. You may ask, does this area hold negative implications for natal placements found there? The answer is, no.

Juno at the midpoint of Mercury-Zeus 14 October

Obscure, I know, but an interesting set of contacts, especially when we note that Juno is also sesquiquadrate Sedna. Mind games may be the order of the day, not with others, but with ourselves! There will be a scratching, scrabbling, underlying need to feel empowered that could permeate thinking and communications, and be driven by desires, ambitions, instincts, and those matters in our ‘blind spot’ (issues that we carry that are plain as day to everyone else, but of which we remain blithely unaware!) This means we may be very vulnerable today, and possibly not even know we are (this could last through the 18th)–and that suggests hypersensitivity springing from what we’re not conscious of, from what we have hidden even from ourselves (or most especially from ourselves, that everyone else sees). Communicate with care, and realize that what we want may be exerting a much stronger influence on how we deal with others than we are aware–and that true cooperation will flourish only when we have as much regard for others’ wants and needs as we have for our own.

On Asking Horary Questions

When we ask about some matter using astrology, we need to understand that astrology can lay out the possibilities, but can’t be anymore definite about the outcome than we are at the moment of asking. By that I mean, if we are examining several alternatives through a horary question for the feasibility of each potential choice, we can only expect some generalities to show themselves, an outline of potentials, rather than a full-color, detailed portrait of guaranteed outcomes. It’s the difference between saying, “I’m hungry; where shall we go eat?” and so considering several potential places, and saying “I’m hungry; I’ll go to Fred’s and have the Chili-Cheese Conquistador for one!” With the first we haven’t decided anything but that we have a need and will consider alternatives–we wouldn’t reasonably expect to know the quality of the meal or the service, and anything that might happen there, at this stage; with the second we recognize the need and commit ourselves in a particular direction, from which we can extrapolate what the experience may be like, indigestion and all–and so with astrology, the first approach will tell us a little something about the experience we can expect with each restaurant, while the second will be much more specific, telling us what to expect with that particular meal experience at that place at this time.

This is something I’ve encountered many times working with querents (those asking the question): there is an expectation that astrology will not just tell them what to do, but will promise the success of a particular choice or venture. There is a kind of passive attitude that says astrology will give a definitive answer that not only makes the choice for them, but that also guarantees everything will develop along what they consider optimal lines. It just doesn’t work like that.

First, astrology does not tell us what to do: it shows us the probable circumstances resulting from a choice–and second, it doesn’t necessarily comment on the results, unless the choice itself brings immediate results. We can’t sit in the back seat and say, “I’ll climb into the front and turn left at the next crossroads, but only if the car will then turn into a Maserati and I’m guaranteed to arrive safely at my destination with a magically appearing pile of money in the trunk!” In this case, the querent is looking for a promise that taking responsibility and making a choice will insure that things go perfectly–beyond perfectly, really, to a kind of magical reward outcome–but a question can only address the next step, and the ripples this might cause, with potential ripples to the step after that moving out in ever-widening circles, and so being impossible to determine at the current, first-step point.

One more example: we ask, “Will my house sell by June?”, in one instance having it already listed for sale, and asking the same before having listed it. How could it possibly sell by June, or at all, if you haven’t taken the step of first listing it? The assumption that we can leap over necessary steps to find the ultimate outcome is detrimental to the asking process in that one then approaches the entire matter with the idea that no energy will be expended in a direction unless that direction is guaranteed to pan out positively–and yet, consider how many times something that didn’t work out sent you in a different direction, and so sparked a later success.

That old saying about a journey beginning with a single step truly applies to asking questions in horary astrology. It’s the next step we see in the chart, and as with everything in life, there are just no guarantees about how it will all come out.

On the 22nd, in order to connect with our own sense of empowerment, we must do two things: reject hurt (even and most especially those wounds we have been embracing for a long time!) and we must be willing to fit the individuality–our originality, our uniqueness–to the critical feedback we receive. The temptation is to rebel against any critique, whether we judge it good or bad, to strike out on our own–but almost certainly, our choices and actions at this point will be based too much on our own delusions, fantasies, and ideals–and so are likely to be less successful than they could be if we were hooked into the world as it is. Helpful hints: reality was illuminated clearly yesterday, the 21st–if you can recall what you perceived then and apply it to now, you can make the most of what comes your way. Unfortunately, it’s a time when our minds and our instincts are somewhat off, not to be trusted–and even the material reality conceals things we’d be better off addressing. Right now, it’s not a matter of willingness so much as of clarity–until the dust clears, we are better off proceeding with care, and recalling yesterday when we saw how precisely gifted we are, and how and in what form we realized we must put it to use.

Luna enters Sagittarius at 1:41 PM Pacific time. You’ll be emotionally tuned-in to this area of the natal chart–the matters of this House are the one place today your impulses and perceptions are likely to be correct.

The 23rd everything may go according to our own relationship with the social sphere and/ or with our own recent expansion efforts. If we are cool with not trying to control others or anything not in our purview, we can enjoy true harmony between thought and instinct, values and wisdom, allowing us to make choices that are ultra-appropriate to who we are and what we need. It’s all about the spirit with which we meet things, and the willingness to attend to duties, to serve–and so reap the benefits.

Have a wonderful weekend!

“Sommerdag ved Skagens Sønderstrand” (Summer day on Skagen’s southern shore) P.S. Krøyer 1883 {{PD}}

The Sabian is, ‘Telephone Lineman At Work Installing New Connections’ That tells us that what reads to us as an ending (the FM) is really making room for better communications, possibly with others, but most definitely with ourselves. We are finding out about who we are, seeing connections within our own psyches that we never saw before, and this necessitates the installation of new ways of creatively bridging our thoughts and experiences; with fresh ways of seeing and thinking come fresh ways of realizing our purpose—the new connections are meant to show us what was there all along, but which we’re only now beginning to understand, see, embrace, or connect, one thing to another.

The Sun for the Full Moon is, ‘On The Beach, Children Play While Shellfish Grope At The Edge Of The Water’ Use of the word ‘grope’ is very unusual; it implies, again, evolution (“at the edge of the water”) and a growing consciousness. The image says we may, in the greater Universal sense, not even have crawled out of the oceans yet, in terms of understanding—or maybe it says we are still like children at play, lacking an awareness of the underpinnings that allow our (relatively) carefree attitude. In any case, this illumination adds to our burgeoning ability to see and measure our own progress, and to give it meaning.

'Ceres' Alice Pike Barney 1901 {{PD}}

‘Ceres’ Alice Pike Barney 1901 {{PD}}

A Little Lunar Essence for 27 September: 4 AM PDT the Scorpio Moon sextiles Pluto. It’s time to purge! –the emotions, the pipeline to intuition, and the Self of secrets that are weighing us down. Just let it out. 10 AM PDT the Moon trines Chiron and quincunxes Uranus. We are attuned to hurt, but if we make a conscious effort, we can turn that energy toward healing, it’s polar opposite–all we need to apply is a unique, original, or unusual approach that allows us to take a view beyond our wounds. Noon the Moon squares Jupiter. Experiences in the social sphere are not the best–stick with what you know, and what you’re sure of. 5:30 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Ceres. We are in touch with Mother Nature, Gaia, our own sense of authority, and can negotiate purely by ‘feel’ should we need or want to. 9 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Saturn and semi-sextiles Pallas. Restraint is smart–it’s that simple.

And a Little AstroEssence for the 28th: Our priorities and interests seem contrary to those of the social circle, and what info we learn or knowledge we glean may be destructive in its effects or concentrated on gaining or holding onto power. Efforts at expansion and control of others or our surroundings seem to threaten what we truly care about—so we step away, thinking we can avoid a problem, but instead find we’ve misunderstood the stakes involved. Stick to facts and adjust efforts to focus on material changes, results, and solid, working-with-reality matters; assume that you are operating under at least a few illusions, that the worth of things is fuzzy at best, and proceed with that kind of caution in mind. (Perfecting today: Vesta contra-parallel Jupiter and semi-square Pluto, Sun quincunx Neptune and contra-parallel Venus, Earth sesquiquadrate Saturn)

A brief article from the Weekly:

More on Eclipses: Expectations
Too often we approach eclipses as some kind of change-your-luck, reach-the-holy-grail, wash-away-your sins kind of astrological event. They are nothing more than New and Full Moons where we just happen, from our vantage point on Earth, to witness one body blocking another, and so cutting off that body’s light. Is that a big deal astrologically? Yes and no—it can signify big, even Earth-shaking, changes and wipe-outs, new starts and major endings, but we have to get past this idea that this kind of massive re-model of our potentials and our lives will occur at each eclipse set.

It’s really as rare as any other lightning strike or lottery win; we’ll have a few of those scattered through life, but mostly eclipses will represent the more subtle or less monumental changes that are part and parcel of every day living. Too much concentration on eclipses as super-powerful comes too close to endowing them with a magical effect they really don’t (and can’t) have—and it’s not a good way to look at the Universe, as if we are waiting for externals to rescue us, or bring us something mystical or extraordinary that will change our lives—really, we have to do the changing ourselves.

We must also remember that even though we are fixated on certain life subjects, that doesn’t mean an eclipse set will address them; sometimes it does, but just as often it points us in another direction entirely. This is a clue to us that the Universe doesn’t necessarily see our agenda as the important one—and maybe hints that what we are finding important in the moment isn’t really important at all. If you’ll let them, eclipses will help steer you in the direction of what you’re really facing, and what your real opportunities are.

Don’t abdicate, for instance, your responsibility to put that fire out. from ‘The Chronicles of St. Denis’ 12th century Artist unknown {{PD}}

From ‘Attachments—Asking Why’, an article on relationships in the current ECLIPSE:

We’ve talked about Ceres’ sex-deadening energy specifically when it contacts the Mars, chart ruler, or Sun or Sun ruler of a male from a female’s chart, or within a same sex interaction in either person’s chart to the other’s, but Ceres can bring her overwhelming Earth Mama or directly maternal vibe by moving aspect, and so temporarily put a damper on drives, unless the individuals can relate to an elemental form of sexuality—if the involved individuals are too civilized, too strongly identify caring with mothering, or are too frightened of Nature and natural behaviors (these make some people feel out-of-control), then a Ceres transit can really gum things up, the worst part being that one might feel the change is permanent, rather than transitory.

Just a Little Lunar Essence for 30 August: the Moon enters Scorpio at 1:53 AM Pacific time of the 30th. 1 PM PDT the Moon trines Neptune. We are open to deep feeling, inspiration, and creative change–whatever moves you at this point is likely to be very positive–unless you let yourself be mislead. Vet your ideas by imagining potential outcomes; if they’re all good, you’ve got a green light. 3 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Ceres and trines Earth. We connect with our power by connecting, literally, with the earth. Garden, work with clay, walk outside barefoot, swim in a natural body of water, plant something–it will bring power, balance, and peace.

31 August relationships may support us, and our money and/ or talent supports our skills, but only if we refuse to dwell on our wounds or to think like losers! At this time the world really is ours to make of it what we will; don’t abdicate your immense power to declare your territory as your own in favor of playing victim or out of a mistaken belief that it’s egotistical to declare yourself—there’s nothing modest or virtuous about pretending to be weaker or more confused than we actually are. (Perfecting today: Venus semi-square Pallas, Mercury contra-parallel Chiron and semi-square Vesta, Earth trine Ceres)

‘Fairy Islands’ from the book Elves and Fairies 1916 by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite {{PD}}

8 AM PDT of the 2nd the Libra Moon quincunxes Sedna. Feelings, especially about relationships, are jarred by things in our ‘blind spot’–and so the origin of the disturbed feelings can’t be pinpointed. Noon the Moon trines Juno and semi-sextiles Pallas. Our empowerment relies on listening to that still, small voice of wisdom–but remember, it’s a choice, so we’re not guaranteed to stop and pay attention, and the voice won’t bother to shout–we have to be willing to hear what it’s saying. 4 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Ceres. The power balance in relationships is examined–negotiations, overt or covert, are in order, and Nature and one’s sense of authority all have their say in what’s worked out. This can even things out between individuals in such a way that it makes for a long-lasting and stable interaction, or it can show us that equity and balance will never be achieved with that particular person. An eye-opener that we should pay attention to. Void begins at 5:40 PM PDT; the Moon enters Scorpio at 7:57 PM Pacific. 10 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Vesta. We may look for emotional comfort on the home front, with the mate, or by diving in to causes to which we dedicate our life energy–or we may intuit something happening below the surface in one or more of these areas. The Scorpio Moon will dig to discover what’s hidden–be ready for an emotional revelation.

3 August thoughts and words may be darker or more destructive than we intend—in fact, we may not realize the power behind what we think and say at all! Too, illusion may seem preferable to the truth at this point. With just a small adjustment to the focus of our attention we can see both what’s powerful and what’s destructive—and so can avoid inflicting inadvertent damage. (Perfecting today: Mercury contra-parallel Pluto and quincunx Neptune, Sun quincunx Pluto)

The Daily Word Image for the 3rd is tiny green fairy lights in the summer garden. Time to fantasize, dream, and maybe consider the life forces, beings, and energies we can’t (or won’t) see.

And from an article on the life and death of founding member of the Rolling Stones Brian Jones (charts are here):

“Brian Jones has a 7th House Pisces Sun close to the South Node; Sun close to a Node implies birth close to an eclipse, and a Total Lunar eclipse arrived almost exactly three days later, on the 3rd. The eclipse was conjunct Jones’ North Node, his Ascendant, and his Earth (and so opposed his Sun), square his Jupiter, ruler of the 4th, and trine his Vesta. The emphasis on home and place, and on the identity so soon after birth may have sensitized his first conscious days to an extraordinary degree, setting up a condition of awareness of the loss of the Cosmic condition of the womb, and an existential longing that nothing earthly could quell. This may be reflected in his purchase, just a year before his death, of the house where A. A. Milne wrote Winnie the Pooh, Cotchford Farm; it seems an unusual choice for a premier rock star of the day, a sentimental and comforting atmosphere in a relatively isolated setting that was the opposite of the contemporary music scene.”

Melancholy can be an impediment to getting on with it; sometimes whittling helps. ‘Melancholia’ by Lucas Cranach the Elder 1532 {{PD}}

2 PM PDT the Scorpio Moon squares Black Moon Lilith, making for an overly gloomy outlook and atmosphere. Though Lilith is all about facing what we’d rather not, in this case we may be prompted to look in the wrong direction, toward things we feel guilty about from the past, rather than things we need to inspect now to improve the present and shape the future. Use discernment when considering matters at this point–and whatever you do, don’t take this temporarily gloomy ambiance to heart. 4 PM PDT the Moon trines the Sun and semi-sextiles Zeus. We see clearly what minor impediments are preventing ambition fulfillment–but that could mean we overlook the big stuff! This also begins a Grand Water Trine with the Sun and Chiron, suggesting that we easily see how to heal, especially in emotional terms. 6 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Saturn, acts as apex to a Finger of God with base of Venus-Uranus, and sextiles Pallas. Emotional and/or intuitive prompts can guide us well, requiring Self-assertion in relationship (or original efforts at earning) in order to bring about real-world results. We should see something concrete occur (or the foundation for it poured) at this time.

May 2014 Full Moon: A Shift of Energies Toward ‘Ultimate Truth’

The Full Moon for May occurs on the 14th at 12:15 PM PDT at 23 Scorpio 54. This Full Moon is widely conjunct Saturn, conjunct Earth, and opposed Sedna-Sun, all across the Taurus-Scorpio axis, giving this FM a flavor of finality, the kind we’ve ‘known’ was coming all along, a shadow lurking at the back of our minds. When reading this FM within your own chart, make sure you read it across the pair of Houses in which the FM and Sedna-Sun fall, because this is a culmination that will be active in both arenas—in fact, it may be difficult to tell where the FM falls just by House activity, as there may be as much of an ending in the House opposing the FM as there is in the one where it occurs.

What ends may be something secret, destructive, undermining, or hidden, as the impetus with the FM may be to move in the direction of Ultimate Truth. Our instinctive understanding may tell us what is changing in terms of energy shifts and the unseen world, but we can look for some material echo of this in the House where the FM occurs—here Saturn manifests something concrete that reflects the ending or change we know is coming about.

2 AM PST of the 20th the Scorpio Moon sextiles Pluto and squares Venus. We may get perversely destructive or nosy in relationships, digging for no real reason, and inspiring rebellion in the process. Transforming the inclination to dig into a push to work out long-term or lingering conflicts may help break down mental relationship barriers and help us recognize the value of what we have. 4 AM PST the Moon trines Chiron, priming us for hurt or healing–a deliberate choice must be made. 8 PM PST the Moon conjuncts Saturn and opposes Sedna. We may side with authorities, the rules, with the secure way and the safety of boundaries, but we need to consider whether we do this because its where we feel at home, or if we do this out of fear. Use blind instinct (one way of positively using Sedna) to decide.

Today’s image is a diner on a rain-slick street, with people arriving in twos and threes to sit in its buttery light and drink coffee and stay dry. We tend to think of our membership in groups as it relates to our family, our professional group, or even our generation, but we have the chance to experience camaraderie, a brief communion built from shared experience, more often than we might realize. Over the next week or two, notice when you become part of these fleeting tableaux, and welcome the sense of warmth and connectedness it can offer, even if nothing unusual happens and you don’t speak with anyone.

8 AM PST of the 21st the Scorpio Moon sextiles Venus and squares Mercury. Romantic encounters get behind the facade, below the surface, or reveal secrets; some will revel in a certain sexiness in the air, others will try to suppress it. We’re willing to go out on a limb for something we care about. The funny thing is, if we try to make contact through words (or try to deliberately convey a message in any form) it may get garbled and, if received, may bring an angry or (worse) indifferent response–right now, go on instinct alone. 2 PM PST the Moon conjuncts Saturn and opposes Sedna. We get an emotional take on the stand-off between our reality picture and those elements of the psyche of which we’re unaware. How do we do that, exactly? We intuit or feel through the physical reality those hidden facets–and we react, without really knowing what we’re reacting to. This can usher in completely irrational responses to physical events or requirements the material world imposes, and can make us feel (or feel we’re witnessing in others) a mini-meltdown. If you do, don’t worry, it’s merely the psyche’s attempt to bring something otherwise hidden to the surface–if you don’t understand it now, just wait–you will. 5 PM PST the Moon trines Juno. We can use feeling or intuition to guide us in empowering ourselves–we may see effective steps to take in a dream, or a daydream, a movie, image, or during the creative process (Juno in Pisces). With a portion of this aspect ‘reaching into the Void’, so to speak, we may find a receptive attitude, or a deliberate stillness, most conducive to receiving inspiration. Void begins at 5:27 PM PST; the Moon enters Sagittarius at 2:12 AM Pacific time of the 22nd.
