The 28th Venus is highlighted, as she squares Pallas, conjoins Vesta, and contra-parallels Pluto. Massive, possibly permanent but certainly serious change begins, or we see precursors appear, or change is possibly just threatened; but in any case, affected relationships and/ or sources of income will never be the same–or at least, we won’t think about them in the same way (Venus in Gemini). We may do some ultra-somber contemplating of what’s truly important to us, and to what and whom we’d like to dedicate our life energies–and the only problem is, we may not honor what’s practical or wise in the process, and so miss an important component of the equation. Luckily, we do have an avenue to wisdom-access: we go through Nature, or through those areas where we hold authority in our own lives–it’s this connection to unseen but felt power that will guide us well.

Today’s word image is an uncut kiwi fruit. Who would think to eat this, with its strange skin like some hirsute link between beast and plant? Look for something in your life that on the surface you might pass by as unappealing–give it a second look, and open up its possibilities, to experience something new, unusual, and startlingly beautiful in pattern and brightness.

May 29th we may lack the sense of irony necessary to see how truly odd it is that we are seeking empowerment through the very things that anger us, or that we resolutely ignore or deny connection to or interest in. Healing, which includes catching on to the inappropriate form or means of empowerment we’re seeking, involves bucking Nature or turning away from the advice of authorities or those in charge–which, especially if we are types who are sensitive to ‘the Other’, may not be so easy to do (Juno conjoined Black Moon Lilith, Chiron contra-parallel Ceres)

Anne Vallayer-Coster – ‘A still life of mackerel, glassware, a loaf of bread and lemons on a table with a white cloth’ 1787 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a pristine white cloth, beautifully rendered in an old painting. The care with which detail is conveyed in some Art is amazing, sometimes to the point where it overpowers the message or subject of the picture. What detail is drawing undue attention, and so taking your mind and heart off the real issue?

On the 30th issues of what’s smart or practical may challenge our priorities, and certainly, our thoughts on how to achieve need tailoring, specifically in terms of how we can both meet our goals and retain power over them. There is a basic push-pull dynamic underlying almost everything today that could lend a sense of disorientation; we may see everything in ‘either/ or’ terms, or male/ female, or active/ passive, Will vs. reward, or beauty vs. action–but what we need to remember is that the world doesn’t actually break down into such a neat dichotomy, with each ‘side’ sharing many commonalities with its apparent opponent. Find those mutual points, and you’ll have your way to smooth out difficulties and honor both what you are devoted to, and what is truly wise (Vesta sq Pallas, Venus contra-parallel Mars, Merc qnx Zeus and trine Pluto)

Today’s word image is a child’s ride-in fire engine with the pedals completely rusted out. What thing used to bring you carefree delight, that allowed you to exercise your imagination, that maybe even offered a sense of psychic ‘rescue’, that just doesn’t ‘work’ anymore? Joy is easily lost when we start to take ourselves and our goals too seriously–take time out to do something others might consider childish, but that you know will reconnect you to a sense of play.

Feeling and so being contrary, sometimes for no reason at all, may be the order of the day. Ours are renegade spirits today, breathing and digging deeply, tasting and experiencing intensely, following instinct and impulse, and doing so with what we love and need in mind, rather than what the reality picture dictates. Enjoy this exercise in an unusual type of freedom–and be aware, there will of course be consequences to choosing ourselves over what the world expects of us (Ceres nov Sedna, Mars in retrograde enters Scorpio, Venus contra-parallel Saturn, Sun contra-parallel Mars)

Today’s word image is a dog confused by the simultaneous calls of two would-be masters. What two goals, aims, ideas, or temptations are calling to you at the same time? The pull between them can be draining, exacerbated by an unwillingness to make up your mind. You may think that delaying will magically offer a way to do justice to both–it won’t. You can’t serve them simultaneously, so you must choose–or choose the Zen way out, and do neither.

We are all likely to experience conflict between our belief system, or ‘the facts’, and reality as we know it. We’ll have to answer the old query meant to discern attitude: ‘Is the glass half empty, or half full?’* For some this will involve tests of the Will or ego against Nature, authorities, or against the constraints of duty, while for others it will involve a simple measurement taken by asking only one question, “Is this wise?” Outcomes may vary from opening up one’s world to overdoing rules in an attempt to lock down opportunities, trying to solidify a stroke of luck, restraining optimism, giving parameters to what might otherwise be overdone, or possibly may result in trying to learn more, in the hope of preventing chaos. This may sound formidable, until we consider a list of what may go right: spontaneity serves relationships or financial situations, being unique makes Art or attracts reward or Love, being a member of the group pays, and so does a willingness to foment revolt in support of Beauty or Love (Jupiter sq Saturn, Mars sesq Ceres, Venus nov Uranus, Sun sq Pallas)

*Everyone knows the correct answer is neither; first, yay! we have a glass, and there’s something in it–then consider the glass can be re-filled at any time, so that any statement of condition is momentary, at best. Or, if you are a literalist, as George Carlin would say, “I just see a glass twice as big as it needs to be.”

Today’s word image is a bright yellow duck. When you read those words did you see a live duck, a sign or image or cartoon, a rubber ducky, a stylized pattern, an action (“Duck!”), or a living thing? What came to mind holds clues on its own (seeing it as alive is quite different than immediately thinking of a printed image or cartoon, for instance), but in any case stands as both synchronous marker and personal image meant to reveal something about your own state of mind.

Thank you, and enjoy your Thursday!

A kind of family portrait, with a female guise of Pluto in Minerva, per some astrologers, mostly notably Isabel Hickey. ‘Minerva, Venus and Juno (The Judgement of Paris)’ Giovanni Andrea Sirani 1638 {{PD}}

We have traded out Vesta at the apex of a Fist of God for Venus; archetypes of the feminine, that describe facets of what it is to be a woman (or to be anima dominant) will show in response to tensions, conflicts, or quandaries between what we desire, including our goals and ambitions (Zeus), and what we want to change, destroy, or transform (Pluto). It seems that inadvertent change will be the result of getting what we want; or that desire fulfillment removes something from our lives we want to keep; or in getting what we want, or fulfilling a goal or ambition, we lose significant power (and so the converse is true as well: being powerful means we can’t have what we desire); and for some, the stress between desire and threatened destruction or change hinges on finances or reward–to make a move may be to throw an important source into chaos.

Notice that the base of the Fist is composed of two male-identified energies, both of which are strongly linked to appetite, to power over others, and to taking what is wanted, without regard for the Other. These are energies that naturally see themselves as holding prerogative over others–rather strikingly, they also do not see others as whole Beings, with feelings and rights inherent to their state, but instead see them as instruments upon which to enact their Will. So, what causes the conflict in the first place is an attitude of entitlement, one that is loathe to give up power and desire fulfillment in any context; it is an attitude that believes, above all else, that it should have anything it wants.

Too, it may be that females or the anima identified will find themselves pawns in a struggle between two sets of Wills–but in truth, the male and female designations are only meant to express the differences in expression, the more assertive versus the more receptive–this could involve anyone. What we want to know, though, is, What is the antidote?

Venus makes one other aspect, a quincunx to Juno. Ahhh, here is how each of us can best get along, whether our struggle is an external one with others, or an internal one over our own wants: we are successful (that is, we get what we want, without losing power) when we are flexible in the expression of our reach, when we are clear on what makes up our territory, and in areas where we are not dependent on another (or on the status they provide) to make an impact. Juno is all about position within the power network, but she’s only effective when she knows precisely where she’ll be truly empowered to act. Though she’s mostly famous for her hissy fits, we have to look behind the stories to see that in those instances she was trying to control something or someone over whom she did not hold power; yet she’s both powerful and smart, commanding in those areas where she indeed holds sway. It’s the depth of our own Self-knowledge that will be tested with the tense situation of the Fist; those who know in real-world terms the extent of their influence are the ones who will choose, and do, effectively.

Did I say “sure of ourselves”? By that I mean, NOT sure of ourselves! Everything that should give us confidence instead makes us feel unsteady, and each unique positive thing about us seems to hold a corresponding negative that may be horrifying, embarrassing, or unflattering. Feedback from the social order or ‘the facts’ only makes us more sure that every ‘bad’ thing about us is showing and we can’t see it ourselves. And worse, we seem to have an internal war raging, where the more passive sense of Self is facing off against the aggressive, selfish, or compulsive part. Sadly, this makes us think the worst of ourselves, to see ourselves as at best flawed, and at worst downright evil–don’t be silly, we are neither, nor do we carry some horrible gracelessness that shames–instead, we need to understand that the problem today isn’t in our character, our Soul’s make-up or history, or our previous acts–it’s in our viewpoint.

The lens through which we inspect ourselves today is so distorted that loving objectivity is twisted in the fun-house mirror; we can’t hope to see ourselves clearly (and we see others receive our projections of whatever negatives we can’t own ourselves), but the good news is that as long as we know our perceptions are either ridiculously exaggerated versions of our fears, imprecisely-received feedback from the social sphere, or complete misunderstandings, then we’ll be able to withhold our own judgment, humbling ourselves enough to know, we don’t know (Uranus contra-parallel Black Moon Lilith, Jupiter parallel Sedna, Venus enters Gemini, opp Mars, and qnx BML, Sun contra-parallel Pluto)

Today’s word image is a pink toy phone. Someone is telling us our communications are immature, when they are likely only couched in the feminine vernacular of receptivity. A message of gentleness is misleading others into thinking we are not strong, not developed, and not capable; just because we are listening, open, non-invasive, does not mean we are weak.

Though we’ve already discussed the Full Moon, that isn’t the only influence we’ll feel on the 21st. Whether we are more attuned to just one or two of these, pummeled by the Fist, or we are aware of all of them, there’s one thing today’s aspects have in common: they feel like a crisis. Those things we’ve been ashamed of, wished to ignore, or that have made us angry (and with which we haven’t dealt) in the past suddenly imply that there are secrets, depths, that may make the issues much worse than we ever thought; or maybe we feel that keeping to our values will wreck our empowerment options; or it could be we perceive a threat to home, mate, family, or to a cause dear to us (or dear to our Self-image, as something we use to define ourselves); or perhaps the social sphere, a lack of knowledge, or a failed or unreachable opportunity is jarring our concept of our own personal power, authority, and threatens to remove what we’ve ’til now seen as our territory.

And the level of aggression involved, the level of destruction threatened if we don’t comply by standing down in some energetic or psychic sense, is extraordinary–and though it will obviously have an external component, we must consider it may be in our own minds, or even more likely, a form of our own anger or aggression, bouncing back at us. We know this because of the way each aspect circles back around to something very personal: our values, our ego, our fear, our Self-image.

We are clever Beings; we know how to protect our viewpoint, justify our interests and our objectives, and for a few of us, at least, this is the origin of our sense of assault. For some this is an answer to our own failure to go forward when the way was clear–maybe we thought the ‘opening’ would last forever, maybe we were trying to do it ‘right’ and didn’t see that making the move, not our form, was most important–and just maybe we are unable at this time to see how truly responsible we are for our own situation. It’s much easier to say the reasons for where we are are ‘out there’, but the reality is, we got here by making choices (or by refusing to make choices)–and so ends another depressing (though it should be empowering, knowing it’s all in our own hands!) sermon on Self-responsibility–no wonder I’m not more popular!

There’s a Fist of God, apex Vesta, base of Zeus and Pluto, closely aligned the 21st that the Sun comes along and lights up the 22nd and 23rd. We juggle ambitions and desires, our very real need to feel powerful in our own world, and factors that may renew or destroy, and we find that what really matters are those things to which we’re dedicated–and then we must decide if we will honor those with our choices, or not. Real-world results, with real-world measures of our own power, authority, and reach, appear, but we need to be careful; what draws our attention may send us the false message that rebellion, Self-absorption, or chaos are positive responses, that they will empower. The true nature of the situation, though, is in the basics, what actually lies before us, with our best course of action one that finds ways for us to express our uniqueness and our spontaneity within those relationships and life structures we actually find sacred; that is, there’s no need for disruption or destruction, if we are clear on what we truly care about.

A note on the station direct of Mercury: it occurs AM of the 22nd PDT at 14 Taurus 20, and makes no aspects moving forward (other than receiving a quincunx from the Moon) for some time. This suggests forward motion makes for a sense of aloneness, a sense of ‘I’ve just awakened, now where is everyone?’ Don’t be surprised if in the first few days after direction communication seems more smoke signals and carrier pigeons than direct talk and clear terms–it all evens out, soon enough.

(Perfecting the 21st: Black Moon Lilith enters Scorpio, the Fist, Jupiter qnx Ceres, Mars opp Vesta, Vesta qnx Juno; the 22nd Merc stations direct, Uranus nov Vesta, Saturn trine Ceres, Sun contra-parallel Saturn and conjoins Vesta to become part of the Fist; the 23rd the Sun nov Uranus, Venus semi-sq Ceres )

Word images for–the 21st: a phone booth stands, still maintained and in service, in a deserted warehouse district. This implies that despite our sense of communications as difficult pre-direction of Merc, we should be reassured that some area we thought it was ‘no use’ trying to communicate in is still active, if not easily accessible.

–the 22nd: a girl sits under an oak, counting acorns. Isn’t that just like us, to be so fixated on new beginnings, and so readily taking for granted what is already grown, that we put our attention on the ‘might be-s’, rather than what is? Here we may be admonished not to put too much stock in the potential of an ‘acorn’ well before it’s shown itself to be anything but food for squirrels 🙂

–the 23rd: a table is set for a meal that never happens; everything collects dust. Where have you created the perfect ‘setting’ but failed to follow through and use it to its best advantage? This may take a little introspection, a little thought, as it’s not always obvious to us where we may have made all the preparations, except for the ones that will really ‘serve’ some purpose.

If you want to order something, do it now–I’ll be unavailable from noon of the 21st through evening of the 23rd, and no one will be overseeing the Press, so no questions or queries will be answered, and no book orders filled, until my return to the keyboard. Edvard Munch – ‘Summer Night by the Beach’ (1902-03) {{PD}}

Big things make us itch; they seem like small things, like things we should be able to do something about, to swat away like gnats, but they persist, because they really are things that need a lot more of our attention than we’re currently allotting. We are tormented, affected, and not aware of how really major the impulses we’re influenced by; in the parlance of noir novelist Raymond Chandler, we’re feeling like we’re in the midst of “one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands’ necks. Anything can happen.” The surprising part is that it happens so suddenly, and though we’re focused on ideas and the meaning behind events, we’d be smarter at this point to take things at face value; if we don’t we risk loss, injustice, and dangerous circumstances.

I don’t mean to make today’s influences sound so ominous; I’m simply trying to convey the elusive, and potentially impulsive, nature of it all. Following our impulses, what we want, lust for, long for, carries a price, if we go for it directly, without considering consequences–and if we pause long enough to consider what might befall us as a result of our desire-driven choices, then we are likely to see that the road between ‘here’ and ‘there’ isn’t quite as straight or obstacle-free as we first thought (Vesta sesq Zeus, Mars semi-sq Pluto, Venus conjoined Sedna, Sun enters Gemini and qnx Black Moon Lilith)

Today’s word image is a sealed letter you thought already sent, found at the back of a drawer. That message was never received by the addressee, and yet you’ve likely conducted your interactions with them as if it were. Consider the impact of not having said what you thought you’d said; does it need to be said now? Or are things good the way they are? Sometimes forgetting to ‘send our message’ is the best thing we could have done.

We’ll close today with another quote from Raymond Chandler: “To say goodbye is to die a little.” So Mars semi-square Pluto! Enjoy your Friday!

Nuclear Reactor depicted on a September 1957 Japanese stamp. Irony is too subtle a word for this. {{PD}}

Since there are no new aspects perfecting for the 18th, I thought it might be time to consider the upcoming Full Moon. For once I think we’ll be served best to look at it early, with time to consider what kind of choices we might like to (or have to) make. But before we do, the word image for the 18th: A nuclear reactor shuts down on its own, to the surprise of the attending technicians. Considering we’re in approach to the Full Moon, this may describe a situation where, before we reach FM circumstances, we will temporarily ‘shut down’ the issue or energy outflow, in an attempt to ‘cool off’ what will end up being the subject of FM tensions. Anything you feel overwhelmed by or find suddenly ‘cut off’ likely signals what will end up being hashed out at the Full Moon, and in the days after.

The Full Moon for May falls at 1 Sagittarius 13 at 2:14 PM PDT on the 21st, closely conjoined Mars in retrograde; the effect then is that the Full Moon perfects and in its aftermath Earth, Mars, and Moon draw ever-closer to one another, suggesting a period of a few days over which the Full Moon effects may unfurl, where we may learn something, or expand our horizons (both Sagittarius), and so fulfill the FM promise.

With generous orbs we also see the Full Moon opposes Venus and Vesta, and since anything opposing a Full Moon is automatically conjoined the Sun, this tells us that what occurs during and following the FM is most likely rooted in matters of relationship, either those involving home and mate, or those involving what we love and dedicate our life energy to, with potential for involvement of assets in the relationship/ dedication mix–and as everyone knows, there can be quite a clash over where one may put one’s effort and attention, as a limited number of hours in a day forces choices: do we choose our causes or our relationships? Do we choose what pays with Love or Money? Even those of us who find a balance will continually be adjusting for the ebb and flow of energy and need. This FM and the period that directly follows may challenge us to decide what we’re going to do (Mars) about that balance. Be prepared, as the voice of the ego (Mars) will be at least as strong in the equation, and maybe more so, as what we love and are dedicated to (Venus, Vesta).

We’re stretching our orbs when we count Pallas as square the Full Moon, but as this creates a T-square with the oppositions, it pays to note what it’s telling us: that what’s smart and/ or practical may conflict with the way we’re seeing and weighing options–we may be allowing the ego too much say. We can also count the FM as the midpoint of a close Zeus-Pluto square, which implies developments will deal with tensions surrounding change to the ambition and desire picture. And, minor aspects, semi-squares from Black Moon Lilith and Juno (which are conjoined in Scorpio) to the FM suggest what occurs is propelled more than a little by issues of anger, denial, or empowerment that have been hidden, and now come clear.

'Among the Waves' Ivan Aivazovsky 1897 {{PD}}

‘Among the Waves’ Ivan Aivazovsky 1897 {{PD}}

The Sabian Symbol for the Full Moon is, ‘White-capped Waves Display The Power Of Wind Over Sea’. We have an interplay of elements here, emotion (Water) and intellect (Air), and perhaps need to keep in mind that neither should prevail; in the image we see their interaction, the way the intellect can buffet the emotions. It’s a reconciliation we want, one that accommodates, as much as possible, both emotional and achievement-oriented needs.

For a Full Moon we also look to the Sabian for the Sun, in order to know something of the origins of the current Lunar situation: ‘Santa Claus Furtively Filling Stockings Hanging In Front Of a Fireplace’ This suggests that Full Moon events, no matter how they make us face things we’d rather not, or that we feel force choices that reveal a little more Self-interest than we’re comfortable showing to others, actually deliver a gift, one that gives us a venue for energy expression (the fireplace) that is much truer to ourselves.

‘Le Destin’ Henry Siddons Mowbray c1895 {{PD}}

A most interesting mix of influences occur the 17th. On the one hand we are likely to find our impulses, especially those keyed to creating the future, inspired (probably without our awareness) by those things ignored, denied, or by injustices we’d like to address–and this is highly fortuitous, making our inclinations much more effective than they would’ve been had we really thought about the matter (Merc still retro and entering that most tense point before direction–no wonder it’s best our mind stays out of the way!)

On the other hand, we may see a kind of breakdown of alliances along gender lines, with the ladies somehow more willing to cooperate or collaborate with each other than they are to accept male input (maybe it’s all that mansplaining we have to put up with). In fact, the collaboration of those with assets (no matter their gender) and those with power or access is another way this energy may show itself. There’s the potential for some mild antipathy to permeate female-male interaction (with or without actual cause in the relationship), and if you do feel it, the wise course is to back away slowly, no eye contact and no big, sudden movements, and just go about your business; there’s no reason to pick a fight, or even be snarky, over something so non-specific, so undefined and even baseless, as this (NN nov Black Moon Lilith, Venus nov Ceres, Sun semi-square Ceres)
