From the newsletter:

The New Moon was at 11:38 PM PST at 2 Aquarius 41. This Moon marks the Chinese New Year, as it’s always timed to the first New Moon in Aquarius; I think of it as a second, mini-New Year, with all the ‘fresh start’ potential brought forward for secondses–it’s a point where we can refine our New Year beginnings, and this is a helpful point of view for those who tend to overreach in the resolution department, or who carry too high an expectation for instant renovation and renewal. I think, then, that we should call this ‘The Forgiveness Moon’, with the emphasis on being understanding of ourselves.

The New Moon makes a semi-sextile to Chiron and a sextile to Uranus and Ceres, which are now conjunct. The NM touches Jupiter by square, reflecting the one area of discord in our scenario. The overall picture is of inceptions that are unique personal power expressions, a direct manifestation of the authority one holds and the individuality at its most characteristic, and these may hurt us (either treading on the primal wound, or injuring via the feedback we receive from the social arena) or call forth our unique skills keyed to our Chiron energies, offering healing to others (and the Self through expression)–and maybe both of these effects, hurt and healing expression, show up at once. The location of the NM in Aquarius, plus the way the Chiron contact is minor (and thus signaling that it’s more a side effect of the NM event, rather than a focus) tells us that the intellect will be stimulated, that this is likely the spark point of ideas (Aquarius) that become action that epitomizes each of us as individuals (Aries). We can think of this energy as creating an exciting new activity or action that may cause some blowback from our social circle (and this could have material repercussions, or could simply reflect envy–Jupiter in Taurus) but that will be a perfect and original expression of who we are.

The Capricorn New Moon December 2011 ‘Seeking Embodiment’ + Solstice Meaning

'The Naiads' Paglieri 1881 {{PD-Art}}

The following is taken from the New Moon report in ECLIPSE Newsletter; to see the full report, please subscribe!

The 24th sees a New Moon at 2 Capricorn 34 at 10:06 AM PST. We’ll give ourselves slightly more than the usual two degree orb, which brings us a sextile to the Vesta/ Chiron conjunction, a square to Uranus, and a trine to Jupiter. A New Moon births new beginnings, and though we’ll feel the inception energy, it may have the character of stretching the new skin beneath a scar; we’re clearly exercising ‘new territory,’ but there is a painful feel under the surface of things.

The Sabian for the NM degree is, ‘A Human Soul, In Its Eagerness For New Experiences, Seeks Embodiment’ This, plus the above listed aspects, tells us that the unique thing we will be birthing or expressing, that may cause us to shield ourselves and contort ourselves in trying to present something that does not suit our true state, is really an attempt to express some eager newly discovered part of the Self. Because this is a new facet of our Beingness (at least in terms of our own familiarity with its qualities) we may fear that it will be mauled, protect it like a frail kitten, and try to gussy it up in an attempt to impress others, our assumptions about what will dazzle gleaned from our own insecurities and fears of ridicule.

What these New Moon symbolisms tell us is that we will discover and bring forth something new and fresh and wonderful from our Souls, and that we will be sorely tempted to respond in an immature way, to hide its true nature, essentially, because we will fear hurt, judgment, or other censure–but the symbols also assure us that this new facet of ourselves and our experience will be well received, welcomed by our circle–so that our response to this fresh part of us becomes dependent on our own ability to operate true to who we are, without Self-imposed distortions or ridicule.

A little on the Solstice and its meaning, in my opinion:

Solstice points are extremes of light and darkness in the physical world; it’s natural that we might see this as significant, and certainly, the symbology of it plays in to our own physical response to changes in light and the way this affects our physiology and the metabolic processes. The Solstices, though, are not astrological events, which is why I don’t usually write about them–in fact, I do not see them as astronomical events either, but an Earth-centered occurrence, since they are tilt-specific and seasonal far points, astronomical only in the way in which we are receiving the Sun’s light. Instead, I see human response to the Solstices as having a magical quality, and what I can only describe as a kind of religious significance–and this is a personal experience, felt if one has a reverence for nature. We are at an extreme point in one facet of our relationship to our environment, our earth, and the Universe, at the time of the Solstices–and of course, the extreme length of the darkness we undergo in the Northern hemisphere at this time suggests contemplation of the inner plane, while in the Southern realms the long day implies emphasis on the external, a revealing of what is and a chance to see surroundings as clearly as possible. We are brought to the farthest point where we as individuals will connect nature and our state of Being; it is symbolically the point of extremity where they interact, and the place from which we will then retreat, headed psychologically in the opposing direction. Differentiating the phenomena that are all around us is, I think, important–we shouldn’t think of the Aurora Borealis, for instance, in the same way we think of the astrological symbolism of Uranus–they meet in the way one is (likely) ruled by the other in astrological terms, but the nature of these is entirely different, with one a physical manifestation of nature, the other a component of a symbolic system that after millenia of observation offers us some correlation to energetic meanings in our own lives–if we confound the two, and start seeing the AB as heralding some Uranian significance, or as a transit of Uranus suggesting the AB will appear (though transits do alert us to possibilities, it is not the transit itself that makes something appear–that is the distinction), then we enter the realm of superstition–and nobody wants to go there, right? Thinking and seeing clearly are why we read astrology–and probably why we’re interested in the physical and the symbolic in the first place–and why we must honor the Solstices for the spiritual feeling they stir, rather than for any inherent meaning they carry.

To those who celebrate the varied holidays that fall this time of year, my very best wishes–and to all, a wonderful New Moon start!

Just a Little Essence for the Sagittarius New Moon 2011/ Solar Eclipse: ‘At Play’

'Children Playing in Autumn' Plinke pre-1915 {{PD-Art}}

In the newsletter I called today ‘The Big Day’ for November; between the aspects and the partial Solar eclipse, it just seems like it is! Here’s a little something on the Sabian for the New Moon in Sagittarius, at 10:08 PM PST at 2 Sagittarius 36:

The Sabian for this NM/Eclipse is ‘Two Men Playing Chess’ Though the influences are complex, and the potential ‘moves’ many, we must not lose sight of what this (and by ‘this,’ I mean ‘Life’) really is: a game. This symbol strongly implies that we should approach events at this juncture with a mentality that is playful and flexible enough to respond, not as if matters are of life and death, but as if they are a challenge to our adaptability, our agility, and our ability to process, discern, and choose, and all with the end of becoming ‘the winner’ (in our own game). There is also the thought that the two men can represent either two active, doing, animus stances within ourselves, so that the game is an internal one, where we hope to defeat internal obstacles, or that they represent ourselves vs an external challenge or opponent–but then, if the external is really just a reflection of the internal (no matter how it seems or feels) then it’s really the same problem, isn’t it? This suggests, then, that the NM hard aspect to Chiron illustrates exactly what may constitute our opponent–so look to the natal Chiron situation for clues as to what might arise as our dysfunction, and also as to the healing attitude we might adopt in order to reconcile the two players, after the game (after the NM period).

For the ‘full’ New Moon picture! please see the newsletter by subscription or single issue–Thanks! And to those who are celebrating, Happy Thanksgiving! And to those who are not, Happy Thursday!

The New Moon in Scorpio occurs at 12:54 PM PDT of the 26th at 3 Scorpio 02. I’m making the orb a little bigger this time; we’ll say a full 3 degrees, as there are just too many bodies gathered so close to aspect–and that makes me think they’re straining to be heard in this New Moon configuration. That means the Moon/ Sun combo is conjunct Juno and opposed Jupiter, quincunxes Uranus and trines Chiron, and sextiles Pluto. It’s all about power, power specifically derived either through relationship or through one’s status and the friction this relationship or status generates–it’s the birth of strong, powerful, and perhaps vengeful urges–that will definitely, radically, change, and likely heal, things. This New Moon brings forward a dark, beautiful heart that rises from the ashes of previous clashes, upsets, and confrontations, renewed in Scorpio.

Above is the New Moon essence; if you’d like more, please subscribe! Thank you!

Piazza San Marco in the Moonlight by Nerly c1870 {{PD-Art}}

On the 27th we’ve really got all we can handle with a 4:08 AM Pacific New Moon at 4 Libra 00. Using our usual strict 2 degree orb, the NM conjuncts Mercury and sextiles Mars, squares Pluto and opposes Uranus (which is, of course, conjunct the Earth). This is a highly dynamic Moon and, in typical Libra style, packs a cold iron fist inside that soft velvet glove. With Libra, there is an automatic implication of a partner or ‘other,’ and so we know that the experience will not be a solitary one. Here, the NM announces itself as about communication (Mercury) and communion (the companionship function of Libra) that is accompanied by or prompts action (Mars); what results is of a destructive or transformative nature (Pluto) and challenges the stability of both our identity as an individual and within the group (Uranus) and could signal unexpected changes to the material situation (Earth).

And later . . .

11 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Venus–excellent! for love, for partnership in the true sense of the word, for co-operation, and for delivering justice, especially for balancing emotional scales–and the Moon’s 12:30 AM PDT of the 28th’s trine to the South Node says that we may draw on the past to reach an emotional resolution now–and this may be very good, as in we’ve in some sense ‘learned our lesson,’ or it could be bad, if we slip into old ways of seeing and doing.

Finger of God, Fist of God, Moon in Leo, My Daily Astrology Diary, My Weekend Astro Diary, New Moon, The Astro Essence

From the Visconti Tarot deck 15th century

6 AM PDT of the 30th sees the Moon trine Uranus and quincunx Chiron. It’s like we’ll get a kick in the pants–and whether it hurts or not is up to how we receive it! We can either let it hit us right in the primal wound (which will make us howl!) or we can let it hit us and use the momentum to propel ourselves forward and up–which won’t hurt at all–in fact it should revv up our unique skills. It’s a great influence, if we’re willing to go with it! Now, this is the start of a Finger of God, apex Moon, involving Chiron and Pluto as the base. Separate from other effects, the Finger offers, very simply, healing with a willingness to change, with resultant emotional and intuitive benefits. It’s no more complicated than that.

New Moon is at 11:39 AM Pacific at 7 Leo 15. The Leo New Moon reads as releasing subtle but powerful energies; it opposes Pallas (and Earth, of course), squares Jupiter, and quincunxes Pluto. There are other things close but outside the strict 2 degree orb–so we leave them alone.

The aspects suggest changes (possibly intense, traumatic, inevitable, sweeping, or arising from the destructive or the negative) challenge us to prove what we believe to be wise really is. It’s a giant reality check of a very personal nature; the upsets will require us to truly show who we are–and what’s more, there will be a public element to this. It’s very possible we will feel under a microscope at this time. We may be observed by the social circle, we may be tested by our students, readers, audience, our teachers, or those within our religious hierarchy, or we may be challenged to broadcast or publish our knowledge or wisdom and then to defend it. This may be a tempering of the Soul and the Soul’s Purpose–but will in many ways be more gentle than we might anticipate, and we should come out the other side (for this NM may just be the beginning of a long-term effect, rather than just a singular happening) much more sure of who we are and what we’re here to do (and consequently what we are also NOT here to do, courtesy of Pluto, who will help us eliminate and start again.)

Just after noon of the 31st, the Moon trines the North Node–and at about the same time the Moon also forms a loose Fist of God with a Moon/ Sedna square apex Pluto. The entire picture is one of unanticipatable material events (Sedna in Taurus) that have emotional results–and, contrary to the usual, we do not need to work out the square before Pluto is accessed–this time, it just happens. A Plutonian event can be anything that involves an exercise of power–just keep that in mind. It’s not necessarily a trauma, destructive act, or experience of rage–it could as easily be a transformative event that feels like a major blessing–so be ready for anything.

The Essence for the 1 July 2011 Solar Eclipse: A Diamond’s Potential

We start July off with, what else? That third eclipse! It’s a Solar (New Moon) eclipse, at 9 Cancer 12 on July 1st at 1:53 AM Pacific Time. As usual, we stick to a tight, 2 degree maximum orb–but are overruled by a compelling configuration.

Though it’s slightly outside our usual parameters, the fact that this is an eclipse begs for the inclusion of a Grand Cross, made up of the Sun/ Moon combination opposed Earth/ Pluto, squared by the Saturn/ Uranus opposition; no other bodies fall within our strict two degree, major aspect rule. What does this indicate?

The most obvious implication is that the eclipse kicks off a Cardinal Cross ‘crisis’–but crisis just means some combination of stress, opportunity, and action–the important part might be that, with the Sun/ Moon filling in the Cardinal T-square to a Grand Cross, it funnels the power and energy of an eclipse into an extant aspect–and possibly blows it up.

The most likely manifestation dynamic is this: the crisis will be set off by some matter of the House in the natal chart where the eclipse itself falls; this will in turn ‘light up’ the Cardinal T. In the most general terms, we are likely to see in our lives change to structures, rules, or boundaries and/ or partnerships that seemed permanent or permanently stuck in the present form, with the ‘revolution’ driven by a unique expression of Self-Will, or by the way the individual is compelled by the group.

The Sabian for the eclipse degree is: ‘A Large Diamond in the First Stages of the Cutting Process’ This suggests it’s either the start of a process that will bring forward some facet of ourselves we’ve never before known we possessed or it will bring forward a new matter (or life situation or structure, possibly in relationship) about which we will care in a major way (Cancer placement).

The Essence for the Solar Eclipse of 1 June 2011: Making Manifest the Desire

Moon in Gemini, My Daily Astrology Diary, New Moon, Solar Eclipse, Solar Eclipse June 2011, The Astro Essence

Thomas Cole 'The Architect's Dream' 1840 {{PD-Art}}

Solar eclipse occurs at 2:02 PM PDT at 11 Gemini 01. Using our usual 2 degree orb, we have only two aspects for this eclipse: trines to Saturn and h.Zeus. A Solar eclipse is, in a symbolic sense, a big, bright birth, where the intuition and emotional factor, for a short interval, blocks the Solar principle, which is all that’s open, conscious, and life-giving–but in the blocking is a symbolic absorption, and thus a powerful combination of the unconscious and intuitive with the conscious and worldly–and a new level of understanding is born.

With the Sun/ Moon conjunction we see a strong, positive relationship to time, constraint, form, reality, and what’s solid (Saturn) and we see the eclipse energy contacting the concepts of ambition and desire (h.Zeus)–this marries the ‘birth’ energy, ‘what is,’ and the push of goals and desires in a powerful three-way relationship, making for an eclipse that rides on a swell of highly perceptible and highly charged energy. In particular, the input of h.Zeus is one of desiring, asserting, and working to gain, and may be the ‘secret’ engine behind the Solar eclipse impetus.

We’ll bring into the reality only those things we’ve invested with a serious desire energy and in some sense released into the Collective. This is in part because 1) the h.Zeus involved is the transiting body, not the natal one, and 2) because an eclipse involves the current transiting Moon, symbol of the Collective unconscious and the emotion that is ‘stored’ in the Akashic Records (briefly, that’s an energy record of all that has ever been) where our ‘energy investment’ is recorded–and from which it will be manifested by the eclipse contact to Saturn. So, what comes must meet these conditions–and will be related directly to the natal House where the eclipse occurs.

The Sabian for the Solar Eclipse echoes what the planetary scheme already spelled out–with the important addition that this will occur in an area for each individual where we feel either at a disadvantage, or where we have been struggling for our personal independence, but where we are somewhat sophisticated. To begin something we’ve dreamed of, independent of others (or of previous restraints or restrictions), something we’ve been striving for and for which we’ve put energy, consciously or not, into the Collective–this is the essence of the Solar eclipse for June 2011 at a personal level.

To see the entire eclipse report, including the discussion of the Sabian symbol, subscribe–you’ve still got time (and two more eclipses after this one are on the way!!) Buttons at right, only $15 dollars for 3 months, or $25 for 6 months–Thank You, and Happy Eclipse!

The Essence of the Taurus New Moon, 2011: Burgeoning Awareness

Europa and the Bull ancient Greek {{PD-Art}}

On the 2nd of May we have a New Moon at 11:49 PM Pacific Daylight Time at 12 Taurus 30. We keep our usual two-degree orb, and we end up with quite a few aspects. We have a trine to Juno (the NM promises easy empowerment beginnings in the area of the chart where Juno, currently at 14 Virgo 00, is transiting); a quincunx to both Saturn and h.Zeus (what’s started at the NM must adjust to reality/ things as they are–especially relationships–and to the need-state of ambitions and desires, as they are clearly solidified–conjunction to Saturn–and must be dealt with); opposition to Earth (of course!); squares to both Vesta and Pallas in Aquarius (events or experiences of the NM spark Higher Mind devotion to the sacred, to home and sexual expression, and to what we know to be wise, and may bring revelations and innovative ideas); the NM is just out of range for a sextile to Ceres; and consequently authorities might lack power and not truly have reach, at this time.

Taking into account my interpretation of the New Moon’s Sabian symbol (available in the newsletter) we ask, what does all this New Moon energy indicate? That this marks the point of a burgeoning awareness of some part of the contents of the personal psyche, and that this awareness will rely upon both a clear connection to the personal reality and a consciousness of one’s most sacred values. You’ll be dealing with ‘baggage,’ your own or someone else’s. Remember, it’s only a starting point–something is born with this Moon (and it’s likely materially related, or will affect the material situation–Taurus) that has deeply-felt ‘roots’–and a growing consciousness of what starts here will inform thought and experience at least through to the next New Moon, with results that reach far beyond that.

The Essence of the New Moon for 3 April 2011: Glass Half Empty, or Glass Half Full?

April New Moon, My Daily Astrology Diary, New Moon, The Astro Essence

'Glass of Absinthe and a Carafe' Van Gogh 1887 {{PD-Art}}

The New Moon happens at 7:31 AM PDT on April 3rd, conjunct Jupiter, and opposed Saturn, h.Zeus, and of course the Earth. When it arrives, this may give the NM energy a bouncy feel, back-and-forth between optimistic seedlings, the hopeful beginnings of things, and a reality-based viewpoint that says, ‘Put a lid on ambitions and desires–be practical.’ It might be a no-fun face-off, and we will likely choose one side or the other, according to our personality. Are we more a glass half empty or glass half full kind of person? That will determine which role we play–and of course, casting ourselves as one means we must cast others in our environment as the other, someone to ‘blame’ as either a wet blanket or an irritating Pollyanna.

The Sabian is surprisingly menacing: ‘A Serpent Coiling Near a Man and a Woman’ That doesn’t sound like a symbol of optimism! And yet, what we may see in this is not danger, as our first impression might be; the snake is near, which requires only awareness. This is perhaps a suggestion that we bring ourselves down to earth, just a little, by keeping a sharp eye on what surrounds us. The man and woman mentioned in the symbol suggest inclusiveness; the warning to stay aware applies to everyone, no exceptions.
