The AstroEssence: Like it or not, we are transformed: by our own or others’ thoughts or words, by contrasts between relationships and values, by unexpected opportunities that are far beyond what we’d have envisioned for ourselves, by secrets or hidden or ignored matters finally seen, by an inflow of assets or money that by its very existence alters our priorities, by actions taken in defiance of what we treasure, by seeing an opening and courageously taking it. Look for one or more of these effects/ events; some of us will see it in externals that come at us, some will experience it internally, in a re-weighing of the impulses between the mind and heart. Look to matters of the House where Mars now transits (Aquarius) for the reasoning or arguments behind your own or others’ actions (and supported secondarily by the transiting Moon, in Gemini, with ’emotional thinking’), and look to the way the ego, identity, and values intersect (Vesta in Leo) for clues as to why things will change and take the form they do. We’ll all reach the end of the day changed; to make the most of it, be as conscious of your own concepts of yourself, and your projections, as possible (Hygeia conj Black Moon Lilith, Mars opp and Venus qnx Vesta, Mercury nov Pluto, sxt Mars, and trine Vesta, Sun nov Jupiter)

John Everett Millais - 'Ducklings' 1889 {{PD}}

John Everett Millais – ‘Ducklings’ 1889 {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a duckling that falls behind mama duck and the other ducklings. If you observe ducks you’ll see this often: one that seems either unable or unwilling to keep up. We all feel at times as if it’s a struggle to keep up, to stay safe by remaining close to the group, but we may want to consider the advantages to going our own way, if only for a time: what we lack in mama’s (authority’s) attention and protection, we make up for in not having to compete for the same assets with our peers, we may pioneer entirely new territory, and we may remove a target from our backs, as it’s easier for a predator to track a group than it is to find a single, small duck among the reeds. So, don’t lament if you are sometimes estranged from the group, or falling behind–there are ways to make it work for you that you’ll never get a crack at staying with the flock.

For those born with the Sun at 23 Scorpio: It’s all about who holds power, who’s in authority, who controls what territory, and who is in charge of whom. This is the topic through the year, up to your next birthday, and is likely exhausting, as continual adjustment will be required. Take heart, though, as what you gain by tackling this now is a strong, clear identity and a direction connection to instincts, which will guide you handily in future. Good luck, Scorpio, and Happy Birthday!

Please consider supporting the blog through donation or book purchase, and have an excellent Tuesday 🙂

Étienne Tournes -' La Toilette' 1874 {{PD}}

Étienne Tournes -‘ La Toilette’ 1874 {{PD}}

What goes on Saturday the 4th is concentrated on the New Moon and the beginnings it offers, with only mild influences from other contacts–those other contacts first: Juno is contra-parallel Ceres, suggesting power struggles over who holds authority, and possibly some Willful demonstrations of trying to move the immovable; and Uranus semi-squares Vesta, suggesting it may be tough for those on a rebellious or independent streak to honor what they truly care about (read: some may transgress, in the name of ‘being myself’). So we enter the weekend with lots of struggle, much of it internal and aimed at exercising our Will. Then comes the New Moon.

Conjoining of Moon and Sun in Gemini perfects just a hair (that’s a technical term!) before 8 PM PDT of the 4th at 14 Gemini 53, and happens to have Venus conjoined by degree, but still not yet perfecting her meeting with the Sun. This triplicity is trine Zeus, loosely sesquiquadrate Juno and Black Moon Lilith in Scorpio, in wide quincunx to Pluto, and square Jupiter and Neptune and opposed Saturn-Earth, these latter four bodies constituting that Grand Cross we’ve been so caught up in. All this suggests that the new beginnings of this New Moon are intricately connected to the experience of the Grand Cross, specifically concerning issues of ambition and desire as they concern ‘the Other’ (Zeus in Libra), of digging for the reasons behind personal empowerment or its lack (Juno in Scorpio), of exploring (or being forced to explore) what we may have hidden, been in denial of, or been enraged by (BML in Scorpio), and what, if anything, we can do to alter circumstances (Pluto in Cap).

The New Moon event is thus simply the outgrowth of what has been gestating/ developing with the tension of the Grand Cross, particularly as this applies to the social role or attempts at expanding one’s world (Jupiter), the current reality (Saturn-Earth), and the creativity or clarity of connection to reality (Neptune), and all in terms of how this plays out in relationships and/ or finances. In short, we find out something about ourselves, about what we want, and who we want, and how effective (or not) we’ve been at getting it.

The best thing, though, is that we may be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and, no matter what the Grand Cross has revealed or delivered, see the beauty and worth reflected there (Venus), with new ideas occurring (Gemini) as to how that beauty and worth matters to our world. If we have an iffy relationship with Venus, we may be able to make peace with her now; an ability to Love Ourselves may emerge that adds incomparably to a positive interpretation of our own gifts and Beingness. Those who have a too-Venus oriented view already may find themselves judging the worth of everything around them, and so devaluing the Venusian intangibles that help balance our relationships and our view of the world; this is the signal to step back, and see that not all that holds worth can necessarily be seen.

'Two Girls Playing' Peter Ilsted c1900 {{PD}}

‘Two Girls Playing’ Peter Ilsted c1900 {{PD}}

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘Two Dutch Children Talking To Each Other, Exchanging Their Knowledge’. The fact that these are children in the symbol right away tells us that the knowledge these two are sharing may be incomplete, lack nuance, or could be innocent of the darker side of matters, though an exchange of what’s known is exactly what Gemini energy is made for. That could imply that information acquisition is a vital part of the New Moon event, but should perhaps be accepted with some caution: despite honesty and good intentions, what we receive may not be as sophisticated or complete as we really need. And why Dutch children? At the time these symbols were received by Elsie Wheeler and Marc Edmund Jones, the Dutch had a reputation (at least in the U.S., where the symbol divining occurred) for a spare, clean, direct, and a little bit cheap approach to life (phrases like ‘going Dutch’ are still in use, though I’d like to point out that stereotypes are just that, with no relation to real people or cultures), and that suggests that within the symbol we may be dealing with bare-bones knowledge, things that are certainly true, but that don’t carry the shades of meaning needed to truly understand something–or, that something important has been held back, a ‘cheap’ attitude toward info sharing. The implication is that what is conveyed by the New Moon is somehow incomplete, and knowing that will prevent us acting before we’ve acquired the details and shading that will give our knowledge necessary depth.

By the 5th we see both the Sun and Venus completing a sesquiquadrate to Juno, and yet they have not yet perfected conjunction themselves. This lends the day an outward-looking attitude, one that may tangle with, even challenge, the empowerment or assertive rights of others, from a sense of Self-satisfaction, a ‘knowing’ of who we are, that feels a bit like superiority–but as long as we also recognize Mars novile Zeus, we can subdue the ego in clever ways that get us what we want, and still allow others to do the same–and this is probably the ‘Go!’ point that what we learned about yesterday (per the Sabian Symbol) and were waiting for.

Full Moon 25 November 2015 A Memory Moves Us

Viktor Vasnetsov 'Snegurochka' 1898 {{PD}}

Viktor Vasnetsov ‘Snegurochka’ 1898 {{PD}}

Today our words and actions have the full faith and credit of our personal power behind them–and that means we’re only effective to the extent we’ve become, to paraphrase Carl Rogers, our potentialities. How well we have actualized what could be within us will determine our impact on others and our surroundings at this point in time. Any empowerment we’ve achieved pays off; and strangely enough, what’s smart may be to ignore those things we want to avoid or that make us angry (Mercury sextile Ceres and Mars, Venus parallel Juno, Pallas contraparallel Black Moon Lilith).

The Full Moon of the 25th is at 2:44 Pacific time (PST) at 3 Gemini 20, and in order to see the sweep of the Full Moon energies we have to allow a larger orb relative to what we usually do; that makes for a FM that’s part of an Air Grand Trine with Mars and Ceres, and that involves the FM in a T-square with the Sun-Saturn-Mercury conjunction (with the latter drawn in by contact to Saturn), with an arm made by Neptune, and a sesquiquadrate to Zeus.

In Gemini a Full Moon speaks of completion of thought, ideas, communications, or movement of some kind, generally focused in matters of the House where the culmination falls. We either see the matter fully formed, or we see it end, and in either case, the Gemini FM opens the way for the ‘next step’ mentally. The Air Grand Trine reinforces this and elaborates upon it: what comes is a balanced view of action and power. We see what our efforts have wrought, and how we need to adjust the action-power balance to get what we’re thinking about/ desiring (and this brings up the very important point, that what we think about, whether we acknowledge it or not, is what we ultimately are aiming for–no matter what we believe our goals really are). This Full Moon reminds us of this, as well as the fact that we are required to both express our power and to make an effort in order to achieve.

The T-square is a kind of reiteration of the GT/ FM message, with a further answer as to outlet: we see the material results of our thoughts, our Beingness (Sun-Mercury)–they have indeed created our reality (Saturn)–and we’re offered a way to release the tension through a purely creative act (Neptune), likely through matters of the House where Neptune is now transiting, or through the House where it sits natally.

Let’s start with the Sabian for the Sun: ‘A Little Child Learning To Walk With The Encouragement Of His Parents’ This suggests that what ends for us is a static state, or at least one where we were not as empowered as we now can become; we’re now capable of taking our first steps in a new direction, one that has a purpose integral to our expression (of which walking is symbolic). The Sun’s Sabian at a Full Moon is indicative of the energy that caused, created, or preceded the Full Moon situation–so this FM is a point where we are ready to move forward in some important way.

The Sabian for the Full Moon is, ‘Holly And Mistletoe Reawaken Old Memories Of Christmas’ This hints that sensory input (through the nerves, memory, and lungs, all Gemini) will transport us to a previous ‘season’–not necessarily a winter one, but certainly, something invested with a distinctive atmosphere that makes for distinctive recall. Those memories will inform both what concludes or culminates right now, and what we take as a next step; what we remember may urge us to recreate that atmosphere, to figuratively re-visit a time and place, or at least to evoke it, in the now–and of course the question to ask ourselves is, ‘What is it that I want to bring back, re-live, or re-create?’ We know that’s probably a feeling–name that, and you’ll know what you’re aiming for.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

'The Harvest Moon' Charles Rennie Mackintosh 1892 {{PD}}

‘The Harvest Moon’ Charles Rennie Mackintosh 1892 {{PD}}

This is the New Moon report and the daily aspects for the 16th from the second-to-last and current issue of ECLIPSE. The title, ‘Out of Pain’, is meant to imply both that what arises may be formed by our wounds, and that it may help carry us away from a mindset of hurt.

16 June efforts bring empowerment—that’s pretty straightforward—but material results may be influenced by our blind spot issues, and so not exactly follow expectations. The more Self-aware we are, the better our results are likely to be, and whatever you end up with, you need to realize that it is a manifestation of your conscious choices and unconscious mind—and so mixes the two—any part that surprises you should be examined closely for the implications it carries about what you’re brewing out of your own sight. (Mars sextile Juno, Earth quincunx Sedna)

Gemini New Moon at 7:05 AM PDT of the 16th at 25 Gemini 07: ‘Out of Pain’

We’ll call this NM the arm of a T-square that it would normally be just a tad too wide to consider, in aspect to the opposition between Black Moon Lilith and Chiron. When we note the presence of the Earth, though, we have to admit we have a Grand Cross with this trio, so I suppose it’s only right to count it as part of this larger configuration, even though Earth’s presence in one corner only signals a material effect to the whole pattern. What is birthed at the New Moon comes directly from the way our sense of hurt, a specific wound, possibly the primal one, collides with all those matters we’ve ignored or denied, or with our sense of rage over some injustice, and what results is some new material condition, probably some sort of knowledge, response (‘getting the message out’ or going forward in educating the Self), retreat to the religious for answers, or the removal of someone or something to a far off place (Sagittarius).

The NM also sextiles Juno, conjuncts Mars, and makes a close semi-sextile to Sedna (only 2 minutes from exact, which is why we note it). These contacts reiterate the message of the Grand Cross, emphasizing the ‘I Am’, the ego, personal empowerment, and that material hidden in the blind spot or that lives below the surface and expresses as instinct. It also speaks of action taken, either at the NM or spurred by it, and promises we hold enough clout to do as we choose—and we likely choose something arising from or addressing our wounds and our regrets.

We talk about something originating with or born at the New Moon phase when it might be more appropriate to talk about the NM as a kind of aperture through which we glimpse something new, or at least, something we’ve never noticed before. As in the case of this NM, the materials that generate the new start may have been around a long time (the Chirotic wound, the rage of BML, Sedna) but we are allowed at this point to get a new sight of them in a specific combination that reveals something not previously noticed, either about the character of the energy itself, or about the way we’ve up to now interpreted it.

The Sabian for the New Moon is, ‘Frost-Covered Trees Against Winter Skies’. We get a winter image/ symbol for a summer NM (unless you’re in the Southern Hemisphere—then you’re getting one ‘in season’). This suggests, no matter on which side of the equator you reside, a distinctive ‘season’ during which the landscape (inner or outer) is uniform, and ‘wears’ the specifics of the time. Winter is the point in the cycle when everything is still, dormant, or dead. What we don’t often realize about winter is that this is a necessary time; there are seeds that wouldn’t sprout without the soaking they get from snow, there are bulbs that won’t bloom without weeks of cold, and the soil and many living things retreat from activity, in a way resting and replenishing for the growth to come in spring. Dormancy is its own ‘event’, its own form of activity—and that’s something that as humans living in an animus/ ‘doing’ driven society we may neglect to appreciate.

This tells us that, in the wake of NM events, we may need to ‘go dormant’, may need to retreat from active involvement in matters, even for just a short time, if the New Moon offers a new viewpoint that we aren’t accustomed to, and about which we haven’t yet made up our minds. The symbol is a reassurance that we needn’t act right away, should we need time to contemplate what we’ve had to confront, what we’ve needed to process, and what may have changed because of it.

See my books here–Happy New Moon, and Thanks! And if you’re interested, see my comment on interpretation of this New Moon in the comments section below.

Certainly more dramatic than a burst pipe. ‘Fisherman and the Siren’ Knut Ekwall {{PD}}

1 AM PDT of the 25th the Gemini Moon squares Pallas. What we’re thinking may be at odds with what’s wise–let feelings break the tie. 3 AM PDT the Moon fills in the base to a Finger of God with Black Moon Lilith, apex Pluto. It’s time to look at emotional secrets, those things we’d hoped to keep hidden, and deal with them for good; the payoff will be a clean slate, and maybe a little power. 9 AM PDT the Moon trines Zeus; our intuition supports our ambitions, and act as an excellent guide. 11 AM PDT the Moon sextiles Uranus and trines Mars. We act (or talk about acting) but surprise ourselves or others with the unexpected, the innovative, or the original. Go with it. 1 PM PDT the Moon quincunxes Saturn and squares Chiron. We may find ourselves adjusting the surroundings to fit our wounds; protect yourself, but realize too much coddling may actually prevent healing. 5:30 PM PDT the Moon trines Vesta-Ceres. We connect with what’s important to us through feeling–and behind that we find power.

Today’s image is a burst pipe. This brings to mind the unexpected gush of emotion, the kind of feeling that overwhelms and simply won’t be contained. There is something that is nearing this point with you, something you feel strongly about–and haven’t adequately expressed. Find it and let it out, before any damage is done.

2 AM PDT of the 29th the Gemini Moon sextiles Uranus and trines Zeus. Spontaneous discussion or thought on ambitions and desires is on the agenda. It’s a good time to network–you can get the support you need by showing your uniqueness–or if you’re on your own you’ll have good ideas and can ponder inventive moves to take you closer to your goals. 4 AM PDT the Moon trines Vesta. You are in harmony on the home front, with the mate, or with those causes to which you are dedicated. Use this flow to enhance the relationship. 6 AM PDT the Moon squares Chiron. We may shut down over hurt, or meet the challenge and pull Chirotic skills into the mix–your choice. 8 AM PDT the Moon trines Ceres and quincunxes Saturn. Who holds authority is up for discussion–and negotiations will necessitate some changes to the rules or boundaries currently in place. 11 AM PDT the Moon hits the midpoint of Juno-Jupiter. We see the emotional repercussions of serious power struggles–or we are emotionally caught in the middle of some sort of parental-feeling dispute. Ideas about who’s right may change with the wind–so stay neutral and out of it, if possible, and remember, it’s not really your fight. Unofficially, the Void begins at 11:45 AM PDT as it leaves the midpoint–officially it begins at 9:15 AM PDT as the Moon leaves quincunx with Saturn–but that’s only if you count the quincunx. Traditionalists begin the Void at 9:07 AM as the Moon leaves trine to Ceres–but that’s only if you use asteroids. If you want only strict Ptolemaic aspects and major bodies, we see the Void begin at 3 AM Pacific. The Moon enters Cancer at 7:14 AM PDT of the 30th. No matter where you start it, this is a very long Void. Generally, things go unexpectedly, and efforts begun at this time often as not come to nothing–so conserve your ammo, as they say, just for now.

Get ready for a new You--'They Come' by Thomas Cooper Gotch pre-1931 {{PD}}

Get ready for a new You–‘They Come’ by Thomas Cooper Gotch pre-1931 {{PD}}

New Moon in Gemini occurs May 28th at 11:40 AM Pacific time at 7 Gemini 21: ‘The Birth of a New Self-Image’

A New Moon in Gemini is very much about a new way of thinking—in this case, with Mercury at 29 degrees and Neptune in the picture, it’s about a new way of seeing ourselves, of having a new Self-image, devoid of the interference of illusion, upon which we can base our thinking. Other than the NM’s square to Neptune, the only other contact is a trine to now direct though still stationary Mars. This promises confrontation that destroys illusions, changes our ideas about ourselves, and that primes us for a new course of action, with the stage for that action likely related to subjects of the House ruled by Aries in the natal chart. Recent events have set the stage for a fresh understanding of who we are, and a new way to think about ourselves in the world; this is very good, bringing a kind of thought-renewal that we are rarely able to apply so completely to our own identity—but this time we can.

The Sabian Symbol for this is, ‘Aroused Strikers Surround A Factory’. Of course we mean ‘upset’ people on strike, not the other kind *wink* But, this somewhat unfortunate choice of phrase brings up a good point: that passion is passion, whether it’s sexual, stoked by rage, or employed in service to creating a higher ideal in the world; it’s intense energy, first and foremost, and we can direct it anywhere we choose (in spite of the impression we give ourselves, that it is created by the object or cause, we really have the passion first, then find what we judge to be a suitable outlet).In this symbol we see passionate individuals mobilized to create change, specifically in (what we can assume) is the workplace; we can translate ‘workplace’ to mean ‘our world’, where we are productive, with the attitude of the strikers the one we must adopt: a willingness to put our passion into action, to call for change, with the New Moon channeling that change-energy straight to ourselves.

The Gemini Full Moon occurs on December 17th at 1:28 AM PST at 25 Gemini 36: ‘It’s All Over But the Talkin’’

Our December Full Moon makes two aspects, a trine to Juno and a wide quincunx to stationary Venus. This culmination may carry with it a sense of accomplishment; we are feeling empowered, or have gained status, in some important way, but stationary Venus says we may be stuck: in a relationship, in our sense of aesthetics, with finances, with earning power, with our Art, with what we care about—somehow, we’re in a bind, and it’s just not working, and we likely don’t know how to get out of it.

In Gemini we’re going to want to talk it out, the only problem being that we may find others unavailable to us (the quincunx Venus), and so despite our triumph of empowerment, gaining, status, partnering with the ‘right’ person, or wielding the influence of our position, we may feel anxious and as if this small relationship or financial thing is keeping us from enjoying our win. It isn’t, really, but try telling that to someone who just wants to clear the air!

This is lovely

4 AM PST of the 18th the Gemini Moon trines Ceres and quincunxes Mercury, making emotions flow in words and thoughts, and expressions of power and co-operation with authorities come ‘naturally’. Easy communication of what we feel happens without any effort–but if we want to keep our feelings to ourselves, better to spend a few hours in isolation, as Merc in Scorpio, Ceres in Libra, and Moon in Gemini are all motivated to share, and just can’t hide what they think. 8 AM PST the Moon sextiles Uranus; sudden shocks, surprises, and emotional outbursts may accompany intellectual exchange or group involvement. 9:30 AM PST the Moon squares Chiron and quincunxes Pluto. Destructive choices or rage hurt inadvertently–if we choose to see these as transformative, instead, we may find significant healing within what feels like an otherwise negative situation. 4 PM PST the Moon trines Juno and quincunxes Venus. Empowerment rests in being flexible, largely with ‘the rules’ we are used to in relationship or values. In this case, bending with the breeze is good, and won’t make for any permanent change, which is the fear that sparks our resistance in the first place. 9 PM PST the Moon quincunxes Saturn and trines Zeus. Now we’re asked to be flexible with reality itself, in service to fulfilling our ambitions or desires. Okay, why not?

Today’s image is a goldfish–swimming not in a bowl, but in the air! There’s something surreal about events and perceptions today–try to take it all in without reaction or judgment, and let all but what’s crucial to you in the moment go.

For lots more, please subscribe! A big welcome to all my new subscribers, and a Thank You to new and old alike!

This weekend it may be the strongest, most powerful people who will weep the most. ‘The Lament for Icarus’ HJ Draper 1898 {{PD-Art}}

From the just-out issue of ECLIPSE:

30 August Mercury in Virgo sextiles Jupiter in Cancer–and despite the flow of a sextile what we find is some aggravation and overly critical interaction, as a too-sensitive social sphere or power-figure overreacts to communications that are bald facts stripped of niceties. If this were a bad science fiction movie, it might be Robot Accountants vs. the Crybaby-gods (or maybe those are dueling gangs involved in a dance-off, à la West Side Story). In any scenario, individuals and groups may split off into cold, calculating (and maybe just a little sadistic) truth-tellers (or perhaps fact-flingers) on one side and powerful but totally playing the tender feelings/ vulnerable ego card on the other. Just be aware, both are attempts to run the show–winners wait for the Moon to shift from Gemini into Cancer (4:33 AM PDT), then use Luna’s sextile to Ceres in Virgo, which also captures Mars at the midpoint, to act from a secure position of appropriate power expression–no need to try to wring blood from a stone, as those identifying with Jupiter will do, or to punish with the unvarnished reality of ‘What Is’, as those identifying with Mercury will.
