Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin {{PD}}

Conflicting inclinations set up the energy dynamic of the New Moon: on the one hand, we may find ourselves digging and digging in relation to stated values and priorities–we somehow just can’t trust what we see–and yet we see the perfect way to benefit through Love or Finances, specifically by focusing on what’s loved, important to us, valuable for its beauty, or treasured. These impulses may or may not present at cross-purposes, and some of us will delve into the essence of only one or the other, but together they set the stage and grab our attention, even as the New Moon slips in, plants a seed, and carries things forward.

The New Moon in Leo occurs in the wee hours Pacific time, at 2:46 AM at 00 Leo 44. It perfects just slightly more than one degree from conjoining Mars–and that means both bodies will move on very quickly to perfect contact to the Warrior energy. A very rough Fist is formed, with the NM apex to the square made between Black Moon Lilith and Neptune. This suggests trouble, in the form of rage or denial coupled with deception, delusion, or imagination run amok, that creates a need to ‘strike out’, to go it alone, or to let the ego drive, feeling we are ill-equipped to handle things any other way.

LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana, Photo By Hu Totya – Own work {{PD}} https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1222063

That’s unfortunate–but is there a way out, a remedy to subconscious anger or righteous resentment? Yes, via the New Moon’s novile to Venus in Gemini. Think about, talk about, consider what you love–that’s the best way to both see how to react and what to do.

The New Moon makes two other aspects, an out-of-sign trine to Chiron, and an out-of-sign square to Uranus. Expect jolts, but healing, Higher Understanding, and easy hurt, skills called forward to address the unexpected. The Sabian for the New Moon offers a clue: ‘Blood Rushes To A Man’s Head As His Vital Energies Are Mobilized Under The Spur Of Ambition’. We may be inclined to try to handle things through the intellect (Uranus) rather than the heart (Leo), though the image makes clear the man is driven by desire (Venus)–and it would be a mistake to focus solely on the mind; we need to utilize the mind in support of those cared-for people and issues, rather than letting the intellect, or anger, lead.

Though I don’t usually subscribe to checking every Sabian, I think considering the importance of Venus, we could use whatever hints the symbol might provide: ‘A Tumultuous Labor Demonstration’. It’s in the midst of chaos, upset, fighting for what we want (New Moon conj Mars) that we discover, reiterate, or crystallize the presence and intention of Love–and the New Moon provides the energy and focus to put that Love into action.

Since a Daily post is currently winning in the polls, I’m going to go for a two-fer to cover the 7th and 8th, which includes the Full Moon in Capricorn. Voting will end Friday, and I’ll go from there based on the final outcome.

Those are some nice gloves. The Workshop of Rembrandt {{PD}}

The 7th may feel like a gentle, velvet-gloved Punch in the Face, as Venus sets herself up as apex to a Fist of God with base of Zeus-Pluto. Change or conflict surrounding the goals or ambition picture may be rewarding but also tough in some regard; it’s as if we can’t receive the Love or Money without seeing the down side, or struggling with the power situation as it allows (or prevents) realization of our wants. No matter what form this Fist takes, it will hurt, particularly as it reveals our own role in making things the way they are.

No recriminations, though, especially if you’re aiming them at yourself; right now we’re too resistant to wisdom, and too influenced by what we’ve refused to acknowledge, to make good choices or sound judgments. Do your best to release, release, and release. Couple this with a policy of non-resistance (rather than outright acceptance) for best results.

Today’s word image is a red envelope. In some Asian cultures this is the form of a gift, filled with money, the dynamic energy of red a wish for good luck and prosperity for the recipient. This is a two-part question: who has recently gifted you with positive energy–mentally or otherwise send them thanks–and to whom would you like to gift a similar asset, in appreciation of what they’ve shared with you?

Gustav Klimt 1916 {{PD}}

The 8th sees no new aspects form, though it does bring us this year’s Capricorn Full Moon at 17 CAP 09 at 9:06 PM PDT. This Full Moon perfects exactly 1 degree before perfection of a conjunction with retrograde Pluto. Most of the other potential aspects are a little wide for the event, as well as being past perfection; the only other aspects meriting mention are a square to Zeus, and in proximity we see the FM also square to Jupiter. This offers clarity in terms of what the Full Moon energy reveals: we see the power picture (Pluto) as it stands, including who holds authority and why (Capricorn, Jupiter as the social sphere), as well as the ways in which that power structure restricts, curtails, or otherwise prevents us fulfilling our goals or meeting our ambitions (the square to Zeus). The facts (Jupiter) related to our ambitions and goals (Zeus) will create tension with the mandate of the Full Moon, which asks us to establish a ‘power position’ once and for all (the permanence of Capricorn). We are highly aware of the ways in which what we desire may force change, transformation, or even destruction, in the process of getting what we want, as our viewpoint may be exaggerated, making the issues seem bigger or more urgent than they really are (Jupiter). For many this may create a conundrum that offers no easy answer, though breaking a few eggs will likely be required before we can make this omelet (imagery courtesy of the Cancer Sun, with Sabian ‘A Hen Scratching The Ground To Find Nourishment For Her Progeny’).

The Sabian symbol for the Full Moon is, ‘The Union Jack Flag Flies From A British Warship’. This symbol speaks of identification attached to a defensive resource. This may imply we should be ready to defend what we can clearly identify as ours; establishing a power base is certainly indicative of the Full Moon-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn, and is vital to being able to deal with those issues that become apparent in the Full Moon’s light. There is also the potential implication, at least for those of us in the U.S., of this being the warship of ‘the mother country’, the one on which our system of laws is based and whose oversight fostered a revolution in order to form ‘a more perfect union’ of our own. That could suggest something bequeathed by the ancestors, a defensive outlook or ability passed down or learned through the family behaviors or even in the DNA, that will be an asset now, should we need it to ‘go to war’ or defend ourselves.

Read, donate, and enjoy a wonderful and enlightening Full Moon!

‘At the Moulin Rouge, The Dance’ Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1889 {{PD}}

On the 2nd, Power Deceptions come into play. It’s not that we are unable to grasp which way (or to whom) the actual power is flowing, it’s that we are being presented with something by those holding the power that deliberately obscures the facts. Chew on that for a second; how does it feel to know that the Truth is being so purposefully withheld, and is done so with impunity? That’s what those in power do when they are unwilling to share. We’ll be mad, agitated, and probably lash out, because dah-um, it hurts, and hurts in a way that cuts us right down into our core, hitting a primal wound that triggers a sense of shame at our own vulnerability. At least in part, this is about learning that the hard edges of the reality picture can’t harm what’s most important: ‘what is’ just can’t put a dent in what we revere, in our highest values, or in what we find sacred, unless we hand our own power over to that external. That’s good news, showing that our Beingness, what’s important (and so what’s eternal) within us, is unaffected by those slings and arrows of misfortune. That should reassure us that the real problem lies outside of us and outside our reach, after all.

Message in a bottle, By Peer Kyle – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=36953569

Today’s word image is receiving contacts from strangers. Suddenly there seems to be a flood of individuals reaching out to people they don’t know; I’m getting them, clients and readers are reporting getting them, and not the kind that are to be expected from the line of work or the social presence–and these are not banking scams or info seeking. They seem to be ‘fishing’ in the old-fashioned sense: looking around for someone to engage with, the equivalent of approaching a stranger at a cocktail party for chit-chat. What they all have in common is this: they are the shallowest of contacts, and don’t promise any real interaction–so why should we respond? We should respond only if we don’t value our own time, if we are looking for meaningless interactions, if we are avoiding life at all costs. It’s the Universe asking us to show discretion, to value ourselves, and to think enough of others not to waste their time, either.

The 3rd brings Opportunity and Optimism painted in broad, shiny strokes, via sudden relationships, a choice of financial paths, an asset windfall, loves lost and found, past group affiliations that build new affiliations for tomorrow, and a promise that any power you have will be treated as sacred. Sounds wonderful, and for the most part, will be. Issues are generated by us, and arise from those matters we’ve ignored or been in denial about, and now must deal with to successfully take advantage of the sudden opening, the revelatory information, the innovative plan, or the original idea.

Today’s word image is a garbage scow moving over pristine waters. Is it time to ‘take out the garbage’ in a big way? The thing with the massive transporting of garbage is, we see it as ‘disappeared’, but it’s really just been taken to where we can’t see it–so isn’t really gone at all. Maybe it’s burned, or buried, but there’s usually a lot that doesn’t get obliterated. What ‘housecleaning’ have you done lately, literal or figurative, that may not have been entirely successful–that is, where’s the garbage been moved to, and does it need further handling, processing, or a final and complete destruction?

By Jot Powers – Own work, CC BY-SA 2.5, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=934530

Mars enters Cancer on the 4th and we may all feel like we’re Running Through Marshmallow Fluff. Suddenly ‘straight talk’ just isn’t as welcome as it was in Gemini, and the only ‘acceptable’ attitudes are caring ones–anything else invites censure or reprimand. Others may see us as overly aggressive, most especially when we’re minding our own business and seeing to what we want and need. ‘Selfish’ may get thrown around a lot, but so may labels that apply to those who take action because they care, who step up to leadership positions expressly to nurture, rescue, or comfort others, and who emphasize that individual responsibility is really the only genuine responsibility that exists. Remember during Mars’ sojourn here that Cancer is a Water sign; that can make assertive energies more volatile as they’re so easily paired with emotions, but it can also mean that if you can touch an aggressor through the feeling nature you can diffuse the human bomb.

The mind and the instincts are melded today, but this includes the ‘blind spot’ material, making for a touchy mental stew where it may be nigh on impossible to trace thoughts and conclusions along some logical or totally obvious course. The reality picture presents us with the need for adjustment, and if we can trust the instincts and are reasonably sure we’re not hiding anything from ourselves, then things can turn out just this side of inspired. Those sitting on a pile of denial or anger will only manage to fool themselves; everyone else will find the imagination stimulated and a creative viewpoint readily accessible.

Today’s word image is a bed in the middle of the forest. Is yours a fairy tale image, a hippie dream, a swirl of leaves where an animal or small human lay, or actual furniture, incongruous among the trees? There’s something about the image of a bed in the forest that says accessing the unconscious, possibly through dreams, a relaxed fugue state, or a meditative one. Examine today’s dreams, the ones you have asleep, and the ones you ponder awake, with an eye to what they might say about what your unconscious mind is building into your future real world.

The 5th we feel strong, sure in our identity and our purpose–so what is all this mental static? It’s caused by the way we’re Connected to Inner Power, but fail to connect to the reality picture as it currently exists. The mind is being short-circuited by a Fist of God, base of Hygeia square Jupiter, apex Mercury, that’s acting as a lightning rod for the dissonance between What Is and the internal landscape. What’s healthy for us is at odds with the social sphere and perhaps with the facts, and this is what creates interference between impulses and forming cogent thoughts. The urge may be to give the life direction a good going-over, but that misses what we might gain if, just for today, we’ll leave behind the rational and go with the fanciful and creative.

Expecting animals to behave like people is generally frowned upon, now days. {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a seal balancing a ball on its nose. Generally, we don’t see making animals do tricks as a good thing, anymore. In what way are you subject to someone else, who has ‘trained’ you to do something useless, frivolous, or simply to show they have power over you? And what will you do, now that you’re clear on how ‘unnatural’ it all is?

On the 6th we see Mercury move into Gemini and Venus into Taurus. Thinking takes on a crisp edge–a relief after yesterday–and relationships and finances take a bottom line, is everybody satisfied approach. We have an Optimistic, Forward-Looking Attitude that may be a tad impulsive to be productive, though the true measure of our effectiveness is found in whether we are able to reconcile our need for empowerment with both our highest values and what’s truly healthy. Not an easy equation to work out, but one that will be exceptionally beneficial if we can.

Today’s word image is a rainbow in an unexpected place. We’ll catch one, when light hits a piece of crystal just right, or mist catches the sunlight, or even when a thin sheen of oil slicks the surface of a puddle. Look into the unexpected, the unplanned, the spontaneous for the fleeting beauty it can offer, and watch for those ‘signs’ that say to you everything is going well–because it really is.

Rainbow and sulfur dioxide emissions, Halemaumau vent, By Brocken Inaglory – Own work, GFDL, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3909872

For the 7th we end up shooting ourselves in the foot if we aren’t willing to Adjust our need for empowerment as it relates to our natural talents and tendencies–but if we are, we can allow values to work with what we’ve ignored or denied, and thereby solve or diffuse issues; adjustment also allows us to incorporate the ambitions and desires into the identity with great success. This day should leave us in a much better position than it found us, assuming our power needs are modified as noted, though we should expect (and accept) that thinking at this time won’t actually be clear on how we can best empower ourselves–relax, that comes later–right now the need is to adjust the Self–any conclusions about empowerment can’t be safely drawn until later.

Today’s word image is a place: Mexico, and specifically Cancun (or another ‘C’ city). Look for references to this (the phrase ‘South of the border’ or ‘going South’, for instance, which can mean escaping, hiding out), or use your own associations with the city or the country.

The 8th offers some highly positive and constructive influences, with only a single tricky dynamic. First, the good news: highest values put a Super-Positive Spin on expression, attracting opportunity and spinning facts into ideal shapes. Wisdom guides creativity, and in relationships and/ or finances we take unusual or innovative steps that can bring (or at least lay the foundation for) serious reward. The only thing to watch for is the working of our own minds; in spite of our skills and smarts, we may succumb to the allure of desire, which in this instance carries some inherently destructive components (Fist, Zeus-Pluto, apex Merc). We may be tempted to choose gratification in one area, and in the process fail to acknowledge that we’re ruining everything else. C’est la vie.

‘Lady in a Red Hat’ 1924 By János Thorma {{PD}}

Today’s word image is something red, that will really stand out. Mark the moment.

Enjoy a book! And have a great week!

25 May 2017 The New Moon in Gemini: The Germinal Spark

They’ve got New Moon ideas. Carl Bloch – ‘In a Roman Osteria’ {{PD}}

This New Moon may be like a little *ping*, almost unnoticeable, so distracted will we be from the new start, inception, or burgeoning issue it represents. The New Moon makes only one aspect, forming apex to a very loose Fist of God with base of Zeus square Juno (There is an argument to be made for a sextile to Vesta, as well, but no, it’s 3 full degrees–a little more than I like for a crisp Moon picture). This suggests something interesting: that we’ll have an idea, a thought, become aware of some germinal seed, just beginning, that comes to us at the same time we experience a conflict or upset, a clash between what empowers us and what we want–and those topics are so compelling that we may have a difficult time holding on to that new concept, that just-starting idea, that could grow into something great. Whether the idea comes to us as a result of the conflict, or is subsumed in the course of the conflict, we will be presented with a mental ‘spark’ of one kind or another; it’s up to us to refuse to wrangle with others (especially partners–Zeus in Libra) over our desires, and whether we have the clout, the support structure, or can show Self-restraint or follow the rules sufficiently (Juno in Capricorn) to fulfill our ambitions. It’s in this sort of dust-up that our New Moon idea can be lost, as we are tempted to focus on justifying, explaining, or proving that we both deserve what we aim for and are capable of getting it. We don’t need to explain ourselves to anyone–and we deplete ourselves if we use our energy to explain and plead, rather than to be and do.

By Larry Abramson – http://www.imj.org.il/imagine/collections/item.asp?itemNum=312005, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=17453944

So what’s the nature of the spark we’ll get? Look to the matters of the House where the New Moon falls for you. It may be an idea on one or more of the House topics, could present a sudden and fresh way of dealing with a long-standing related problem, or could be something we hear or read, a message or statement not necessarily meant for us, but just what we needed to be privy to, to realign our thinking or open our mind to a new way of reasoning or seeing. If the New Moon forms aspects to your natal placements, these are also clues as to what may contribute to the spark for you–and in particular, pay attention to Houses ruled, if any, by natal placements contacted by the NM. These can show a synergy that connects and combines matters into a single issue. For instance, if the New Moon falls in your 3rd, square your Virgo Sun in 6th, with Sun ruling the 5th, you could see a change in the daily routine (6th) as you get a new contract (3rd) related to your creative output (5th). This same combo could refer to a new creative idea (3rd, 5th) that causes you to take a particular job, or to change the one you have (6th). Or, you take a short trip (3rd) to gamble (5th) and lose your job! (6th) You get my drift.

The Sabian for the New Moon is, “A Revolutionary Magazine Asking For Action”. Words can educate us, move us to a cause, inform and inflame–but at this time we must take care to keep our attention on our goals. We can try to explain our ideas, try to enlist others to our side, but in the end, this is energy, as the Fist tells us, that’s better spent actually pursuing what we want. To change the world feels good, but it happens in the doing, not in the talking about doing–something to keep in mind as we deal with today’s influences and events.

We also see a passel of other distractions, presented through relationships, finances, and a reality picture that forces us to adjust our thinking by making it impossible not to deal with what we’ve up to now ignored, denied, or been enraged by. We may be told by others that only the future matters; what really counts now is to accept, even love, change–it’s not just the only way to stay sane, it leaves that much more of our energy and attention for our own use.

Your Week 19-24 May 2017 The Big Kahuna

‘Shaman’ 1930 Arman Manookian {{PD}}

I’ve added the answer to the Horary chart in the Horary article (scroll down or click here), in case you’re interested.

Friday the 19th there may be massive, literal finger-pointing over beliefs, facts, and disclosures, and though it gets ‘it’ out in the open, it’s not particularly healthy, in terms of the debilitating effects it has on everyone. We have a pounding Fist of God (Hygeia square Jupiter, apex the Sun) that suggests enlightenment will be brutal, and a tense T-square (Venus opp Jupiter, square Hygeia) that pits values, assets, and relationships against beliefs or facts–but which of the latter? In a best-case scenario, beliefs will be replaced by facts–that, at least, will make the discord worth going through, as it puts everyone on the same page, and removes a ‘wishful thinking’ element that’s contaminated Venusian areas for too long. Here’s the kicker, the key, the big kahuna, the whole enchilada: Mercury parallel Uranus tells us Higher Mind understanding, revolutions in thinking and reasoning, and revelatory information, is the result–truly a worthy and desirable outcome.

Today’s word image is a joke: cat walks into a bar, sits down, and orders a drink. The bartender puts a shot down in front of the cat, who reaches his paw out and swipes the glass off the bar and onto the floor. Then the cat says, ‘Gimme another’. Is there something we approach with a bit of swagger, certain in our actions, that appears confident and yet ends up being wasteful or silly? Are we even in the right place, placing the right ‘orders’, in the first place? Questions to ask ourselves today.

The 20th brings those with wisdom and those with empowered status into conflict. Are those qualities, wisdom and empowerment, necessarily always mutually exclusive? Of course not, but in this case, those seem to be the lines along which this particular confrontation will divide. Illusions about what’s healthy, or in how to achieve a functional state, abound, so it’s unlikely that, as the Sun enters Gemini, we will reach any workable conclusions–but we’ll sure think about things a lot.

By Ingo Neu, CC BY 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=53914743

Today’s word image is something red. Though things that are red will be noticed, there’ll be one thing in particular that stands out. What it is, and what it says, represents, or means to you, is what’s important.

The 21st brings unexpected harmony between the senses and the instincts–and so can lead to excellent responses and choices, when the mind doesn’t interfere and gum it all up. Our responses to relationships and financial situations will be right on; don’t forget tomorrow what you thought about someone, or some asset or money-related situation, today.

Today’s word image is a haircut. In symbolic terms, I see hair as representing thoughts. So, what does your choice of hair style say about you? Do you change the natural tendencies of your hair by adding product? Is your hair (and so your thinking) stiff and inflexible, does it curl tightly around on itself, is it limp or have you changed it by artificial means (dye or perming, perhaps)? What do you see being ‘shouted’ by the hair of those close to you? You may notice a surprising correlation between thinking ‘style’ and the way the hair is kept.

On the 22nd temper is a factor, at least in part because, consciously or not, we recognize that our reasoning at this time is clashing with our values. Don’t ignore this; have the courage to admit that what we want may actually violate our most important personal standards–and then let go of the desire. Nothing’s worth getting if it compromises our integrity.

There’s even a comic set on the Pacific trash heap itself. Image Comics, Joe Harris and Martin Marazzo (Fair Use)

Today’s word image is the great Pacific garbage mass, an accretion of discarded trash, junk, plastics, things sucked out to sea by tsunamis, and anything else that found its way to the water and doesn’t break down fairly quickly. We’ve been hearing about this for some time, the warnings dire and downright frightening, and there’s no disputing that this is a bad thing for the planet. But NOAA tells us the situation isn’t quite what we’ve been led to think. Consider that you may be viewing something in your world as hopelessly ‘polluted’, when in reality you can still change the course of things, still ‘clean it up’ and revitalize some vital component of your life. You can save it, if you really care; it’s not hopeless, after all.

The 23rd the sh*t hits the fan, as they say, with another Fist (Zeus-Juno, apex Sun) and another T-square (Venus opp Zeus, both square Juno) taking aim at our tender bits–and perhaps destroying our idea of what’s wise or practical in one fell swoop, or maybe re-shaping our inner wisdom or practical stance to be much more applicable in our current world (Pluto square Pallas). This Fist of God forces our attention to the way our ambitions and desires are at odds with our present empowerment scenario. We’ll see exactly how our status fails to bring us what we want–and presumably, we’ll see how to correct this. At the same time, though, we’ll be faced with the stress of the T-square, which pits ambitions against assets, or maybe relationships, and requires us, via Juno, to use what power we hold to work out a detente between two factors with each clearly seeing the other as a threat. The saving grace here, aside from the transformative power of Pluto that we will undergo, want it or not, is found in Mercury novile Chiron. This promises we will find a way to think about things that will ultimately be healing. When we look back, then, we’ll likely see today as rough but beneficial, possibly making one or more life areas much, much better.

Today’s word image is a husky, stranded on the median of a busy road. In this image the fact that this isn’t just a dog, but one that is most at home in the northern wilderness, and yet is found under stark, man-made circumstances, speaks of something close to Nature that is in a ‘foreign’ environment. What part of you is ‘made’ for something much more natural, for a more open or isolated setting, that has been forced into an unpleasant, even dangerous, situation?

The 24th we’re still wrestling with our own power situation and our ability to implement our wishes, but we see a few other factors become prominent: we’re stirred by both fear of being hurt in the future and a certain discord between reality and our instincts; we see that in some way getting what we want is out-of-step with our values, or endangers our relationships, or will cost, possibly more than we can bear; and we see highlighted those areas where we lack power, or the ways in which the current power structure denies us access or effectiveness. Today is simply a day to note what comes at us, to consider, formulate or fine-tune plans or approaches, and not to stress too much about where it’s all headed–we’re not nearly ‘there’ yet.

First known depiction of a Snowman from a Book of Hours, 1380, found in Koninklijke Bibliotheek, in The Hague {{PD}}

Today’s word image is a snowman! Who in your world is frozen, and is this keeping you from connecting, or does he use his frosty outsides to willingly isolate himself? Not all who are troubled need your help; sometimes they want barriers, want things to be this way.

The New Moon and general forecast for Thursday the 25th will follow in a separate post. Expect my explanation of the Horary chart tomorrow, the 19th. Many thanks to my readers! You are a lovely lot 🙂

It’s time to ask ourselves, in all honesty, what we’re actually putting out into the world. Are you a cheerful person? Do you choose the more positive take on any situation, the more negative (out of caution, perhaps), or the one that fits your beliefs? Are you realistic? Do you consider the psychic impact of what you’re saying or doing, beyond its veracity or the need to convey it? Are you a complainer, feeling justified in spewing your anger (sometimes dressed up as righteous commentary), not aware of the fact that you’re adding to, rather than alleviating, the garbage level? Just a thought, to make us all, myself included, more aware of what we’re really sharing with others.

Though I don’t usually take note of the apparent direction or retrograde motion of the asteroids (mostly because their meaning is so much a slice of other, major energies that we need to keep our eye on the big boys, instead–and since all bodies are only meaningful in relation to other bodies or points, a change in direction on its own doesn’t tell us much of anything–plus, there’s the whiplash factor with some asteroids, so that their apparent direction changes happen so frequently they become meaningless), today I want to make an exception, as we see Vesta go retro and Chiron go direct, as they form a sesquiquadrate to each other. Add to this that Saturn (parallel Hygeia) loosely fills in a Fist by square to Chiron, and we may see this: real-world ‘wounds’ or skills are required, through difficult circumstances, to manifest within the reality picture (that is, in concrete terms), and the result shows us just how our egos are aligning (or not) with those things we revere. This brings a reality check (a ‘health check’, really) on our support of our own causes, measuring how dedicated we actually are to the mate or the home life, and so offering a chance to course-correct, should we be weighting one side of the scales too much, either too selfishly, or too selflessly, for the overall good.

We also see a trine of two major players, Mars and Jupiter, in Air signs. Mars in Aquarius brings action and choice prompted by the intellect (positives: inclined to think before we do; negatives: we may be too disconnected from realities to make the best choices), and Jupiter in Libra promises an expansion of fairness (but possibly only after extremes have been swung between), the expectation of partnering with the social order (so that the individual may make the mistake of believing that the social sphere is in agreement with their personal agenda), opportunity through cooperation (though there is the danger we may acquiesce too much, trying to be fair) or through the partner, the Arts, the mate, and Jupiter in this sign invites beliefs to invade relationships, either supporting or clouding the interaction. The two planets trine implies belief-driven action but offers no guarantee as to how accurate the perceptions guiding our efforts truly are. Current conditions suggest we are more than a little susceptible to believing our own press, so that awareness of the skewed nature of the personal viewpoint becomes something we must embrace consciously, in order to both allow others plenty of leeway, and to navigate things as successfully as possible ourselves.

Today’s word image is a nun walking the corridors of a hospital. This seems to be a symbol of two things: submission to a greater power (subjugation of the ego) and dedication to service in the form of facilitating healing. We don’t have to go to such blatant lengths as entering a religious order to serve others or our God–but we do need to recognize and be consciously dedicated in this life to some variety of causes or commitments, in order to be living to the fullest.

For those born with the Sun at 10 Sagittarius: This year you may find yourself reaping the rewards of your creative or imaginative efforts, or your dedication to ideals–or not reaping them, if you’ve previously failed to put your all into action. You may have suffered under the illusion that you have plenty of time to make that dream a reality–this year will be a wake-up call reminding you that it’s your job to translate wants and fantasies into their real-life expressions. The good news is the mind and emotions are primed to go to work, and to see the most practical route to dream realization–so go for it. Good luck, Sagittarius, and Happy Birthday!

See today’s New Moon here–

The AstroEssence: Both preceding and following the New Moon in Libra, the rest of the 30th of September plays like a discovery of, or preparation for, New Moon shifts–and most of them will be positively productive, if not downright joyful. We’ll feel strong and confident in ourselves and our role, so that action and choice are swift and sure. We know who we are in that most important sense of knowing our status in all situations–and that just naturally leads to putting our attention in the ‘right’ place, and of course, effort follows attention. The mind is balanced, focused on perceptions of Truth, and yet it’s smart to bounce ideas off trusted others–they offer a perspective that’s just slightly different than our own, preventing blind spots (this is necessary because our position within a situation may cut us off temporarily from our instincts). Right now the input of others will often provide a spark that makes the whole picture fall together. The only upset may come from the social sphere, which may offer, even press on the individual, unwise or impractical options. For a few of the truly misguided, the facts may rear their ugly heads and reveal that beliefs were based more on myth than reality, signalling a time to embrace what’s really smart, after all (Sun nov Juno, Juno contra-parallel Sedna, Jupiter sesq Pallas, Mars trine Ceres, Merc nov Hygeia)

There is a Fist of God formed by two bodies that make major aspects to the New Moon, Saturn and Neptune, with apex of Vesta, which does not=this suggests that any clash between the reality picture and the creative urge (or obstacles to forward progress and ideals, or any other Saturn-Neppy combo you like) will result in real strain to the priorities and those matters you hold sacred, to include the home, the mate, and those causes to which you’re dedicated. It’s not a deal breaker, just something to keep in mind in the wake of New Moon developments, as the stress won’t come directly from the NM events, but from the way they create tension between our reality, our frustrations, and our ideals, spirituality, and creative urge.

Please enjoy this from Robin at Robin’s Window–

Today’s word image is the threshold of a door. We have some idea of thresholds as demarcating more than just the point when one passes from inside to outside or the other way around; we see them as marking major shifts (like the old tradition of carrying the bride over the threshold), as a point representative of or marking personal power or ‘territory’ (as in so many stories, where some supernatural entity cannot cross without being invited), we look at opportunities or options in life as doors (and claim that when one closes another mode of ingress must appear). And, when we speak of being on the threshold of something, we are talking about a major shift or change, one that signifies a huge step forward. So the question becomes, are you poised on a threshold, ready to enter something big and new, or are you inside, needing to defend your territory from someone that wants to intrude?

For those born with the Sun at 8 Libra: you’re in a kind of personal spring this year, Libra, one that promises as much renewal and regeneration as you need; the tough part is, you may not feel you need that many do-overs! This much regeneration may feel a little like destruction, as if the chaos is pointless–but you would be smart to recognize that, at least in this regard, the Universe knows more than you do–trust it to remove what’s no longer needed, and to prepare the way for what’s new. Be willing to make adjustments, use your creativity wisely, and a lot will change for the better by your next birthday. Good luck, Libra, and Happy Birthday!

I’m going to wrap everything up together in this forecast for a few days ahead, as I finish the eclipse report (which should be available here on Monday the 29th) and give myself a little breather. This coincides with Dark of the Moon, a good time to plunge into a Merc retro period, as we’re already more open to the feeling and sensing nature, the mind stilled (somewhat) by the lack of Lunar light; we don’t find what we think, or what we think we feel, so prone to block incoming information as it usually is. Between Merc’s retreat and the looming eclipse, it seems that making the forecast as tight and easy to remember as possible might be best for everyone–so here goes:

The 29th: We may be inclined to be too headstrong, and so sabotage ourselves–cooperation is the key that both empowers us and brings about serendipitous reward and/ or ambition fulfillment (Mars sq Nodal axis, Venus enters Libra and nov Juno, Sun nov Zeus)

Today’s word image is a wounded bird. Accommodating an injury, whether it’s physical, psychic, emotional, or spiritual, is vital to both recognizing its impact and then helping it heal. Ignoring it only offers the potential for the wound to get worse–and if you don’t heal, how will you ever fly?

By Giovanni Dall’Orto – Own work, Attribution, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=5208666

The 30th: change of mind might echo a change of heart; we benefit by facing what we’ve recently ignored or denied. All positives today come from embracing our own personal uniqueness (Venus nov Black Moon Lilith, Sun parallel Uranus and nov Hygeia, see also Mercury Retrograde, below)

Today’s word image is a pumpkin, ripened to orange in the garden. That’s a sign of fall–and yet it’s still August! What thing in your world seems to have arrived much more quickly than you anticipated? Is it truly ‘out of season’, or is it indicating more time has passed than you thought? What’s unexpectedly ‘ready to go’?

The 31st: reality-based evolution (whether that is transformational or destructive) is smart, with opportunity fostered by confidence in one’s abilities, a determination to deal with facts and ‘what is’, and a refusal to be rebellious just for the hell of it (Pluto nov Pallas, Jup p Ceres, Sun contra-p Nep and sesq Uranus)

Today’s word image is Pinocchio. The little wooden marionette wanted to be a real boy so much he actually became one. Is there some ‘impossible’ thing you’ve been wanting? Because you may just get it (and all that attends it, all the positives and negatives), after all. And don’t forget to tell the truth.

For those born with the Sun at 7 Virgo: sorting deceptions and illusions from realities, along with a sense of the emotions as being ‘closed off’ and inaccessible, may be the two toughest things for you to face this year, Virgo. This may be the year when you see and deal with every possible impediment or obstacle in your path to what you want–and then you may find, quite suddenly, that you’ve gotten exactly where you wanted to go! So go to work on those problems–it will all pay off handsomely, in the end. Good luck, and Happy Birthday!

For those born with the Sun at 8 Virgo: empowerment, the status you crave, and being part of a ‘power couple’ (even if you’re a silent or unwitting partner) may be in your year ahead, Virgo; success depends on how well you incorporate your ideals into your every day, how ‘married’ you are to having no illusions (hint: the more you like The Truth, the better), and being willing to exercise your creativity (no matter how minor the effort, or how creaky your attempts–use makes them better and better). Be brave, be willing, and get over your fear of heights–you can’t reach the top without letting that go. Good luck, Virgo, and Happy Birthday!

For those born with the Sun at 9 Virgo: the anticipation feels killer, doesn’t it? Almost there, you may be telling yourself–but somewhere along the way, did you forget where you were going? That may be the sense you have of things this year, through to your next birthday, Virgo. It may be difficult to believe that your dreams have changed, as has your idea of what it would be to ‘make it’–but they have, and it’s up to you now to respond to those changes and alter course. Until you do, you may remain stuck–or worse, succeed in meeting the old goal, and being immensely disappointed in how it doesn’t fit your life now. Look at what’s deep inside–that’s the only way to know what’s real, and needs to be followed. Good luck, and Happy Birthday!

For those born with the Sun at 10 Virgo: you have to look at those matters that enrage you, or that you’ve been ignoring or in denial of–they are the keys to moving forward this year and bringing your dreams to reality. A new emotional viewpoint unfolds for you no matter what, though how you deal with all these factors, the feelings and the problems, will determine your future, and possibly your fate–so don’t hesitate to tackle difficulties; it’s vital you make your voice heard. Good luck, Virgo, and Happy Birthday!

Mercury Retrograde 30 August-22 September 2016: Taking Aim at the Material

'Young Samurai and Female Attendants Practicing Archery' Utagawa Toyokuni I 歌川豐國 c1800 {{PD}}

‘Young Samurai and Female Attendants Practicing Archery’ Utagawa Toyokuni I 歌川豐國 c1800 {{PD}}

Mercury begins apparent retrograde motion at 6:04 AM Pacific time of the 30th at 29 Virgo 04–and immediately it feels like we’re thrown into a state of mental crisis! Criticisms, doubts, and potentially a headlong rush back toward either ‘the facts’ or the standards of the social sphere ensues–and this is just our immediate reaction. The retro period is one that prompts us to re-think, examine, and question the material situation (Earth sign) and how we got to where we are. We ask ourselves if we’re satisfied with what we’ve got, with what we see around us, with what we’re earning, bringing in, getting, enjoying, and whether our resources are adequate to our intentions; our thoughts about the material situation, likely keyed to matters of the House where the retro occurs (and secondarily to the Houses ruled by Merc), are vetted, and by the end of the retro we may have a completely different idea of what we need and want materially at this time. This interval will change our material aims, both how we think of our goals, and how we intend to get there.

If we look at the retro picture poetically, we see that Mercury was in pursuit of Venus, newly fled into Libra (to the shelter of a partner? or a tax or investment shelter? or a partnership of earning and caring, or one of being valued or valuing the partner as an asset?) but the chase slows and then abruptly ends, with Merc retreating to a social milieu (a retro meeting with Jupiter) that welcomes him and envelops him with ‘I told you so’ and ‘What were you thinking?’ and ‘What more do you want?’ This meeting can also signal a retreat to ‘Big Picture’ thinking that believes the individual is too important to mess with details–a misunderstanding of the energy, in this instance.

Heed instincts and the wisdom of impulses on the 6th, as Merc trines Sedna, and be prepared–this re-thinking and re-ordering may hurt, or potentially could heal our ideas about the material world and our place in it (the 10th). At the same time as the hurt/ healing, we also receive a personal shock, lightning strike, or group contribution that offers wise revelation, that brings forward just what we need to hear, realize, or learn (Merc as apex to a Finger of God with base of Uranus-Pallas). A Fist of God forms the 12th with Mercury-Sun square Mars, apex Ceres in Taurus, that suggests action combines with thought, ideas, plans and though it’s not easy, the result will be the best ‘power position’ we can hope for materially in the moment. This also happens to be the point of the Inferior Conjunction of the Sun and Mercury, so keep awareness of whatever ‘seeds’ may be planted, deliberately or inadvertently, at this time. Mercury goes direct around 10:30 PM Pacific time on the 21st, in the midst of a trine to Pluto. This suggests change, transformation, destruction, reformation, right out of the gate, based on the changes to our mentality and to our view of the material world, and our place in it.

The page on the September eclipses is up!

Thank you, and enjoy the run up to the eclipse!

A Summer Shower, by Charles Edward Perugini 1888 {{PD}}

A Summer Shower, by Charles Edward Perugini 1888 {{PD}}

The AstroEssence of the 17th and 18th, and the Lunar Essence of the Full Moon in Aquarius: Leading up to the Full Moon we are faced with a question: Are we changed by Love, Money, or secrets revealed about values or assets, or are we the agent of change in areas of Love, in finances, in the keeping or spilling of secrets, or in recognizing a change in our values, and so changing how we relate? Since Earth signs are involved (Venus trine Pluto), we should expect a material, or at least tangible, impact; we may be ‘undone’, with some Venusian aspect of life devastated, destroyed, or transformed (don’t panic, this may be a good thing!) This fundamental change sets the stage for the conclusion, end, or completion associated with the Full Moon, 2:25 AM PDT of the 18th at 25 Aquarius 51. This is a near miss, an almost eclipse, and the impact we feel may be as much the Venus-Pluto aspect that precedes the Lunar event (as it leaves us reeling and yet unsure of what hit us) as it is the pull of the Full Moon itself.

This Full Moon, along with Uranus, forms the base for a Finger of God, with apex Jupiter. Should we also include Mercury, which is conjoined Jupiter and within orb of Uranus, but not the Full Moon? It’s a tough call, but I’m inclined to say Yes, as proximity to the other elements of the Finger means Mercurial energy will enter in some form–it just may not be what it seems. That is, we may believe we have come by rational means to a concluding belief, decision to expand, teach, or learn, or concerning a social role (Jupiter)–but the mind may simply be a means of translating our perceptions at the level of Higher Mind (Uranus) that is revealed through events of this Aquarian FM. This suggests it may be Higher Mind inspired feeling (Aquarius Moon) that is really running the show, not the cogitations of our limited, trapped-in-three-dimensions brains. Awareness of this will make us more open to spontaneity and give us confidence in our own choices (both Uranus in Aries) and this in turn allows a more attuned experience than does being overly-focused on our thinking and the illusion of control this inevitably gives.

Different fingers. Pink Sherbet Photography from USA – ‘Happy Finger Friends Love’ by D Sharon Pruitt CC BY 2.0

Too, let’s note the way Chiron is caught at the midpoint of the Finger’s base; since the opposition with Jupiter is separating, the implication may be that the dynamic of the Finger begins with a wound, or with an instance of healing, that then spurs the Higher Mind understanding that melds with the FM event to offer that Jupiterian result.

The Full Moon is also apex to a loose Fist of God (or Thor’s Hammer, for you Vikings) with base of Vesta and Hygeia. This may take us further back in time, to where an instance or pattern of not honoring our health (the Cardinal square between Vesta and Hygeia) helps bring about the Full Moon event–which, as you know, is likely to be related to matters of the House where the Full Moon falls.

A novile is formed by the Full Moon to Pluto, and the Sun/ Earth-Moon axis squares Sedna, creating a T-square. A sense of rebellion from what is instinctual may combine with a deep urge toward destruction and change–this makes a kind of engine for the configurations to run on, generating some deep conflict and energizing our embrace of change. We may reject or find unacceptable our usual, unprocessed response, and the conflict this engenders, along with an advantageous glimpse of what things might be like with the upsetting factors gone, eliminated, or reformed, is enough to make all the rest spring into action.

Elefantino di Giulia Orecchia Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International

And now we need to examine the elephant in the room. Her name is Pallas, and she’s conjoined the Full Moon in Aquarius. This suggests that everything involved with the Full Moon is a measure or test of our wisdom and practicality, as well as our skills and ability to apply them. This theme will loom large, and yet we won’t necessarily be seeing events, feelings, urges, and our responses to them as a test-taking or assessment–that only comes later, when the conclusion that is unavoidable with a Full Moon event makes it clear we wound up where we are because of what we consider smart, what we know, and how practical our ultimate orientation.

The Sabian symbol for 26 Aquarius (remember, we read up) is, ‘A Garage Man Testing A Car’s Battery With A Hydrometer’. This emphasizes the mechanism of testing, which we’ve already discussed. A battery is Uranian, while the hydrometer points toward the importance of feeling and so the Water signs involved: Chiron in Pisces, and one part of the Fist base, in Cancer. Both these signs are volatile emotionally, at least in part because the barriers between the individual and the Collective/ Others is blurred, even as we ‘test’ it from our own unique expressions of Will and viewpoint (Uranus in Aries). This could imply that if we are having a hard time processing our own feelings surrounding this FM, we may divert our emotions into a Big Picture expression, one that allows us to express but doesn’t risk quite so much emotional exposure, even to ourselves.

We also look at the Sun’s Sabian with a Full Moon, simply because it is the origin of all light, and so enables perception. ‘After The Heavy Storm, A Rainbow’. So, whatever troubles are stirred at this time, we can be assured it’s for the good, or at the very least, that it will all work out positively.

The only aspects not addressed by the FM are Venus’ contra-parallel to Zeus and parallel to the North Node; these add a flavor of drama, wherein relationships, values, or finances push back on our ambitions, and where we struggle to reconcile wants with maintenance of what we care about. It’s easy to see that this will add tension to the feeling nature, and again make us work to figure things out, rather than allowing Higher Mind to possess us for a time.

(Perfecting on respective days: Venus trine Pluto/ Pallas sesq Hygeia, Venus contra-parallel Zeus and parallel NN, Sun sq Sedna)

Odilon Redon - L'oeuf 1884 {{PD}}

Odilon Redon – L’oeuf 1884 {{PD}}

The word image for both days is a peeled, hard-boiled egg. We’re always talking about ‘potential’, especially in terms of our own lives and our own creativity. An egg is potential itself, but hard-boiling it captures potential and turns it into solid mass; it is what it is, at that moment–there’s no more room for development. The events of this Full Moon may show us that certain things can no longer remain (at least in our minds) in that state of potential; they will have already hardened, taken shape, and so must be accepted, used, dealt with as they are.

For those born with the Sun at 25 Leo: speaking of potential, you are fairly bursting with it–but what you need to know is that making the most of it won’t come easily: you will be tempted to fight every instinct and the deep, rhythmic primordial knowledge of life itself as it attempts to guide and inform you. Why would you resist that? It could be that you’ve come to believe too strongly in your own individuality; it’s time to acknowledge that there are forces out there bigger than you, and that they want to help. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

Olaus Magnus 1555 {{PD}}

Olaus Magnus 1555 {{PD}}

For those born with the Sun at 26 Leo: a lot of things have come to an end recently, and you move into a new emotional ‘day’, with all the optimism that can offer. You’ve learned a great deal; we could say you’ve become wise, from all you’ve experienced. It’s time to take what you know and apply it in the smartest way possible; all that you know will coalesce to create a kind of ‘magic touch’ that, with even minimal effort, will manifest exactly what you’re aiming for. Good luck, Leo, and Happy Birthday!

'Woman Reading a Letter' 1660-1662 Gerard ter Borch {{PD}}

‘Woman Reading a Letter’ 1660-1662 Gerard ter Borch {{PD}}

The Full Moon occurs at 10:19 AM PST at 3 Virgo 33. A Full Moon is an ending, a culmination of what came before both in the passage of time and in the emotional history, and signals a conclusion, especially a conclusion of feeling based in the Moon (emotions) reaching a point of maximum visibility. We tend to see the point of things, to realize that the situation is complete, over, no longer viable. And we let it go, or we allow the conclusions reached to fuel change.

This Full Moon is semi-square Zeus, yet too wide for us to count a quincunx with Venus, though we might need to count the exceptionally wide (for a Moon event) opposition of the Moon-Earth to Sun-Neptune-Ceres, with the latter two only 29 minutes apart at 9 Pisces. The mild but noticeable contact to Zeus implies that ambitions or the desire nature are receiving some sort of answer, with FM events pointing to an end place for something we want–and of course, this can be because we get it, or because we don’t, and see that it will never be ours.

The Moon-Sun complex suggests this: what has pushed us forward has been some combination of creative energy, delusion, lies, spiritual quest, ideals, power needs, authority issues, a search to establish territory, and the desire to control. These have formed the fait accompli we see with the Full Moon, with its Virgo location suggesting practical results, an accounting, and/ or a harvest.

The FM Sabian is, ‘Black And White Children Play Together Happily’, clearly a suggestion that the FM brings a state of integration, harmony, balance, parity. Whether this is internal or external for you depends generally on whether the FM falls below the horizon (internal) or above the horizon (external) in the natal chart.

For a Full Moon we also look at the Sun’s Sabian, as the Sun is, after all, the symbolic source for the energy that creates FM circumstances (as well as the literal agent of light): ‘Heavy Car Traffic On A Narrow Isthmus Linking Two Seashore Resorts’ This again brings forward the idea of happiness or play (the resorts), linked by movement between them (a kind of sharing of like material, symbolized by the people we can assume are traveling in the cars). The idea may be that it’s in making the effort to get together in the first place that the two opposing or disparate elements (symbolized by the Black and White Children) find a way to happily interact, and pinpoint commonalities.

The star of the show, however, is a loose Fist of God (or Thor’s Hammer, for the Nordic enthusiasts among us) that names the FM apex with a base of long-term on again, off again Cardinal square Pluto-Uranus. This square has been analyzed to death, and though it takes a particular form for each individual, we can say this: the forces of individuality and/ or the group in relation to the individual, and facets of uniqueness, originality, and rebellion are awakened in service to the individual Will or identity (Aries), and clash with, not the need for change, but the actual changes themselves (a fine point, but an important one) in any and all structures, rules, and boundaries related to Capricorn and the House containing transiting Pluto, as well as the House it rules natally, in the chart.

So, it’s the changes that the individual responds to that go on to create even further change, new rules, new boundaries, new structures, that help shape the individuality and allow harmonious interaction with factors from which one once remained separate, and the Full Moon events comment on this: we see some conclusion related to integration of disparate elements that’s either practical, draws criticism, or in either positive or negative form is a kind of ‘harvest’ (which is simply the result of what’s been ‘planted’ previously). This Full Moon may reveal what we have constructed from our own unique sensibilities in response to changes in the rules and structures within which we normally function. We have made it work, as Mr. Gunn says, though it hasn’t been easy (or perhaps not–we may simply take a pounding–the Fist); but with this FM event we get an answer that acts as a conclusion: to a dream, to a lie, to a desire, and from there we must determine our next step.
