‘Undergrowth with Two Figures’ Vincent Van Gogh 1890 {{PD}}

24 August we see some raw, unadulterated, Self-focused (but not necessarily selfish) drive around ambitions and desire fulfillment come forward—we may just observe this in relationships, or may feel it ourselves—and some may become intent on making relationships or ambition scenarios payoff. The problem will be that thinking will be contrary to effective ambition fulfillment—it may in fact be so contrary to it that it crashes any efforts we make—and yet, pursuit of goals and wants isn’t out of the question, it just has to be done by feeling and instinct, like negotiating a pitch-dark room. Already launched ambition efforts may rake in Love or Money. Unique Self-expression suffers only to the extent that it fails to follow our own highest values and standards—if it does, we might be able to heal something long ago damaged and waiting for closure. (Venus sextile Zeus, Mercury contra-parallel Zeus, opposed Chiron, and quincunx Uranus, Sun sesquiquadrate Uranus and contra-parallel Vesta)

Today’s image is a young man, all alone, walking down a muddy road; in every direction, as far as the eye can see, there is nothing but a sea of yellow grass. No matter how alone or isolated we feel, we are still going forward, still going somewhere. It’s our own hubris that lets us think we know our destination; it’s much more natural that we don’t.

'The Pale Complexion of True Love' 1899  Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale {{PD}}

‘The Pale Complexion of True Love’ 1899
Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale {{PD}}

For Saturday, 16 August: determining power situations and power distribution seems vital, and yet we have a major distraction to all this in creative expression in the home or through a cause we support; the wish to express creative ideas takes our time and attention from dealing with issues of authority and from fully owning our own power position—and that easily creates problems. It might help to remain aware of two things: communications may be incomplete and erratic, so we can’t take for granted that we know the whole score (it’s almost like a mini-Merc retro effect), and we need to do whatever smart alternative the reality picture commands—to ignore it in favor of creative expression at this time is to court unpleasant mix-ups in agreements and to risk having our own power of choice usurped by the quick and the sneaky. (Ceres parallel the North Node, Neptune trine Vesta, Saturn semi-square Pallas, Mercury sesquiquadrate Uranus)

And for Sunday the 17th: we finally feel an enormous positive shift in the Cosmos—or at least in our little part of it—with the planet of Love and Money meeting the planet of expansion and abundance—so what could go wrong? We have a basic scenario for prosperity, specifically through communicating with or listening to those who hold the power; but difficulties with delusion or deception, fantasy, troubles within the home or with the mate, and instincts that seem to be at odds with the way the world works, may all show against us. The trick may be to keep things, whether relationships or finances, on a power exchange basis—that way it’s clear what’s changing hands—and realize that instinct and imagination sometimes aren’t our friends—at least that’s so when it comes to Money or Love—we need to stay focused on reality to make gains and feel good. (Venus conjunct Jupiter, quincunx Neptune, square Vesta, Mercury sextile Ceres, Sedna square the Sun-Earth axis)

‘On the Activities of the People at Moonlight’ Olaus Magnus 1555 {{PD}}

The Full Moon occurs on the 10th at 11:09 AM Pacific time at 18 Aquarius 02; she sextiles Uranus, opposes Mercury and Black Moon Lilith, and squares Saturn. It feels, in some fundamental way, that we may process the energy of the Full Moon as nothing so much as a distraction; maybe it’s its big, bright Super-ness that will dominate the sky and so disorient our sensibilities. In any case, what we may have is a ‘bang!’ over in one corner, pressure from reality in another, and showy confrontations with what we don’t want to deal with, what we’re hearing or learning, what’s being communicated, and all of it turning us away from the Aquarian higher knowledge and understanding we’re being offered.

How will it come to us, then? The Moon disorients, deludes, cloaks us in illusion; we must look to the Sun, and his companions Mercury and Black Moon Lilith. These offer solutions (the culmination of the Full Moon) that the Moon is too affected, too in love with her own glow, to deliver. To receive that higher illumination, that answer to a vital question, we must face those matters we find ourselves avoiding right now, and funnel that illumined energy through matters of one or both of the Houses in the natal chart ruled by Mercury. That’s a formula that won’t be the easiest to decipher, but it will show us areas of the chart (those Merc ruled Houses) and life matters that are overdue to be faced, dealt with, and from which we can glean something exceptionally important.

'Fairy Islands' from the book Elves and Fairies 1916 by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite {{PD}}

‘Fairy Islands’ from the book Elves and Fairies 1916 by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite {{PD}}

8 AM PDT of the 2nd the Libra Moon quincunxes Sedna. Feelings, especially about relationships, are jarred by things in our ‘blind spot’–and so the origin of the disturbed feelings can’t be pinpointed. Noon the Moon trines Juno and semi-sextiles Pallas. Our empowerment relies on listening to that still, small voice of wisdom–but remember, it’s a choice, so we’re not guaranteed to stop and pay attention, and the voice won’t bother to shout–we have to be willing to hear what it’s saying. 4 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Ceres. The power balance in relationships is examined–negotiations, overt or covert, are in order, and Nature and one’s sense of authority all have their say in what’s worked out. This can even things out between individuals in such a way that it makes for a long-lasting and stable interaction, or it can show us that equity and balance will never be achieved with that particular person. An eye-opener that we should pay attention to. Void begins at 5:40 PM PDT; the Moon enters Scorpio at 7:57 PM Pacific. 10 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Vesta. We may look for emotional comfort on the home front, with the mate, or by diving in to causes to which we dedicate our life energy–or we may intuit something happening below the surface in one or more of these areas. The Scorpio Moon will dig to discover what’s hidden–be ready for an emotional revelation.

3 August thoughts and words may be darker or more destructive than we intend—in fact, we may not realize the power behind what we think and say at all! Too, illusion may seem preferable to the truth at this point. With just a small adjustment to the focus of our attention we can see both what’s powerful and what’s destructive—and so can avoid inflicting inadvertent damage. (Perfecting today: Mercury contra-parallel Pluto and quincunx Neptune, Sun quincunx Pluto)

The Daily Word Image for the 3rd is tiny green fairy lights in the summer garden. Time to fantasize, dream, and maybe consider the life forces, beings, and energies we can’t (or won’t) see.

And from an article on the life and death of founding member of the Rolling Stones Brian Jones (charts are here):

“Brian Jones has a 7th House Pisces Sun close to the South Node; Sun close to a Node implies birth close to an eclipse, and a Total Lunar eclipse arrived almost exactly three days later, on the 3rd. The eclipse was conjunct Jones’ North Node, his Ascendant, and his Earth (and so opposed his Sun), square his Jupiter, ruler of the 4th, and trine his Vesta. The emphasis on home and place, and on the identity so soon after birth may have sensitized his first conscious days to an extraordinary degree, setting up a condition of awareness of the loss of the Cosmic condition of the womb, and an existential longing that nothing earthly could quell. This may be reflected in his purchase, just a year before his death, of the house where A. A. Milne wrote Winnie the Pooh, Cotchford Farm; it seems an unusual choice for a premier rock star of the day, a sentimental and comforting atmosphere in a relatively isolated setting that was the opposite of the contemporary music scene.”

Weak sauce or not, we’ll all get a taste. Jean Béraud’s ‘The Drinkers’ 1908 {{PD}}

New Moon in Leo occurs 26 July at 3 Leo 51 at 3:41 PM Pacific time. The Leo New Moon roars at us mid-afternoon Pacific time, and so in most of the Western hemisphere may go unnoticed in the daytime sky. This New Moon is conjunct Jupiter, and we can count a loose sesquiquadrate to Chiron—and with lenient orbs a square to Mars, brand new in Scorpio.

This suggests that what develops at the NM seems much more formidable, with tougher requirements for action and choice, and much more serious stakes, than it really is; it appears that this conflict or challenge will in actuality be ‘weak sauce’, as the phrase goes—with effects likely concentrated in the natal Houses holding the NM and t Mars. We may work ourselves up, or the social circle may make noises that suggest this is a bigger event than it is—but what happens, or what choices we must make or actions take, will be much less effective and/ or meaningful to our Path than we might think in the moment. Mars new in Scorpio could be more concerned with being taken seriously (even being considered ‘dangerous’ in some sense) than in getting into action, and a square to Sun-Jupiter only adds incentive to broadcast the Self and ‘shine’—no one reacts well to that kind of pressure, especially after the somewhat debilitating experience of the Saturn-Uranus direction changes.

Carducius Plantagenet Ream ‘Dessert No. 4’ c1865 {{PD}}

Your weekend sampler, featuring a too-long cake metaphor, a slice (again!) from the article on sibling relationships, and a little glimpse ahead, but just a crumb–have a great weekend!

Today’s image (for the 18th) is a pink cake box, like the kind you get from the bakery, containing a crushed cake and discarded on the freeway on-ramp. This is a sad image; who is so angry or unhappy or spiteful that they moosh a perfectly lovely cake and throw it out the window of a speeding car? Someone who doesn’t like the good things in life, that’s who, someone who is not willing to accept pleasure–and they don’t want anyone else to have any enjoyment, either. Is there someone like this in your life? If so, consider that they may ruin everyone’s cake out of deep sorrow, perhaps out of a belief that they don’t deserve life’s cake. If you find it in yourself, you may want to offer them a slice, and let them know that they really do deserve it–all we have to do is be alive to deserve it!–and we can all have our cake, after all.

Anything posited in the 11th adds layers to the interaction, and typically focuses major attention in 11th House matters. The Moon here, for example, may suggest we see our own mother, those who seem maternal to us, or those with whom we empathize as friend material; an emotional connection may be essential to viewing an individual as a friend, with this placement, and could dominate interaction. So how do our sibling interactions influence our later interactions with friends? Even if there are no other connections, Whole Sign Houses give us the same element in both 3rd and 11th House—and further, we get the same element on the 7th of Others, with all three Houses offering both personal and group or ‘other’ related viewpoints for the chart individual. This implies that the way we relate to friends and groups is very much like, even modeled on, sibling relationships and early childhood experiences (which also fall in the 3rd). With the elements connecting the Houses, we can’t help but translate our experiences in the matters of the earliest part of life (the 3rd) into later events and experiences as our horizons and contacts widen.

19 July are our relationships or finances not fitting smoothly into our reality, or must our reality modify itself to accurately reflect the Truth of our relationships or financial situation? That’s the question we’ll wrestle with all day. (Perfecting today: Venus sesquiquadrate Saturn)

20 July sees us discover the down side to our expansion attempts, our social role, or to knowing what we know; somehow we are seen as responsible for darker elements that are in reality way outside our control. This brings a form of public judgment, an episode where the social circle makes a pronouncement about us—and there’s nothing we can do about it. Just know that what’s communicated is more revealing about the thinking of those making the assessments than it is about you or your choices. Too, our own thinking is influenced by things we’re not aware of—and pushes us in directions we might not anticipate, to undetermined effect—and that could be the same influence that’s causing others to make those judgments of you. (Jupiter contra-parallel Pluto, Mercury semi-square Sedna)

This is just, as it says, a sample–please consider subscribing! Thanks!

Henri Rousseau - La zingara addormentata 1897 {{PD}}

Henri Rousseau – La zingara addormentata 1897 {{PD}}

The Full Moon occurs at 4:25 AM PDT of the 12th at 20 Capricorn 03. The Moon makes a wide quincunx to Venus and a wide square to the triumvirate Vesta-Ceres-Mars, with Vesta technically outside our usual fussy orb (even Ceres and Mars are a little farther out than usual)—but in this case Vesta’s close contact to the other two overrides my reservations. We also see a loose Grand Earth Trine with Sedna and Pallas. With a Full Moon promising culmination or fulfillment, we may find two simultaneous trends: a balancing or coming to an end of material matters involving a resolution to something that came out of our ‘blind spot’, but which we have answered with wisdom or skills—so a satisfactory ending—and another trend of new ‘problems’ or issues coming forward, these involving our own actions, our relationship to authority, assets or earnings adjustments, and our values/ what we find sacred/ and/or home and mate, and the impacts all these have on one another. It may almost feel like punishment: we’ve just managed to put out a few fires over there, and now a few more pop up over here. Darn!

Let’s look at the Sabian for inspiration as to what issues we could face. ‘A Relay Race’. Sh*t, that doesn’t sound good, does it? It sounds like we’ll be continuing that stressed state, continuing to bat at those fires with an old blanket. We may have a long way to go—the one bright spot is that a relay race involves a number of individuals, typically three others—so expect to have your three ‘allies’ made crystal clear with the Full Moon. We also look at the Sun, as it makes the light the Full Moon reflects. ‘A Famous Singer Is Proving Her Virtuosity During An Operatic Performance’. Ahh, this is nice—it implies that within all this stress and effort we show ourselves to be very talented, to be able to rise to the challenge and perform at the highest level, and this may be observed by others, with all the opportunity that implies. So there’s that.

And what about this Full Moon’s status as a ‘Super Moon’? The term has come to be used whenever there’s a Full Moon occurring near perigee (the point when the Moon is closest to the Earth).  Astronomically this is referred to as perigee-syzygy or a proxigean Moon (when the Full Moon occurs within 24 hours of perigee). But, it’s important to realize that the Moon reaches perigee once every anomalistic month (the time spanning one perigee to the next) of 27.55 days. It’s full once every Synodic period (a Synodic period is the time from one point, such as a Full Moon, to the next Full Moon) and these have an overall average of 29.53 days. It’s only when the Full phase and perigee occur roughly together that we have a ‘Super Moon’. Does this mean anything astrologically? Not really, but we can argue that we could conceivably feel this affect within the approximately 57-60% of the body that is water–after all, the Moon drives the tides, why shouldn’t this pull and create inner ‘tides’, as well? So, the ultra-sensitive among us may sense it, but the ‘Super Moon’ doesn’t, in my opinion, affect the astrology of the Full Moon event.

Have a great weekend! And if you enjoy the blog, you may want to consider subscribing–see what you get here–

‘Summer’ Mary Cassatt {{PD}}

All the free subscriptions and sub extensions have been awarded; thanks to all for participating–I received far more entries than I expected–what a great surprise!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

28 June: 6 AM PDT of the 28th the Cancer Moon squares Vesta-Ceres. We care about something and that caring conflicts with our highest values and/ or will get us in trouble with authorities. When does this happen? When we love someone who will lead us down a bad path, when we know that the right thing to do is also wrong in the eyes of the establishment, when we are betrayed and have always believed we would walk away in this situation, but find ourselves staying against all better judgment. How to assess our position? We need to make caring about our own welfare top priority; if being involved in the situation means we won’t be respected in some way, it’s time to go. 2 PM PDT the Moon sextiles Sedna and catches stationary retrograde Mercury at the midpoint. Merc is paused for direction–he may act as the outlet for the emotional ‘blind spot’. Watch your own communications for what they can tell you about hidden feelings or motives within you; careful observation should be quite revealing. 5:30 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Jupiter. Feelings are exaggerated; someone may insist they care more than is reasonable. Look for what they might get out of taking such a stance. Void begins at 6:03 PM PDT; the Moon enters Leo at 1:43 AM Pacific time of the 29th.

Today’s image is a chocolate bar shared among three strangers as they wait in the pouring rain for a bus. Sometimes it’s just nice to be nice, you know?

29 June: we are aware that there’s a danger we could base our actions on past hurt, but we should know that the real influence is buried feeling, instinct, and hidden matters—not that that’s necessarily better, or worse! Adding to our, what? confusion? is a strong sense that relationships and financial matters are not what they seem. The way to handle this discomfiting influence is to channel our energy into a purely creative project, one that does not depend on others, or on obtaining new assets, before going forward. Work with what you have; action brings forward skills, draws inspiration from the unseen, and could, eventually, pay. (Mars quincunx Chiron, contra-parallel Sedna, Venus square Neptune, Sun trine Neptune)

Weighing Libra

Being Fair; Giving In—Or Not; Judging, and feeling they have the right to judge (reflected by Saturn’s exaltation in the sign), Libra assesses everything she contacts, and sets the standard for aesthetics, partnerships, for the worth of things, and in many ways, that’s her place. Libra is a set of contradictions: appreciating but wanting more; generous (insisting on sharing!) but also insisting that everyone else shares equally, as well; thinking about the other—but in the context of the Self; cooperating—but only if you do, too!
What appears to the onlooker to be indecisiveness is anything but; when asked to choose, Libra must ponder, weigh, and extrapolate. One of their strengths that’s often overlooked is that Libra thinks (it’s an Air sign, we musn’t forget) everything through to the bitter end before venturing an opinion or committing, which means once committed Libra’s loyalty is fixed, like its element. Libra’s completeness of thought is a plus mistaken for stupidity, timidity, or no preference at all—but Libra always has a preference—how could a being ruled by aesthetics, beauty, and the worth of things not?
Libra is seen as a social sign, but that isn’t quite right—it’s just me and you, not a crowd, and if we’re not speaking (a favorite tactic of Air signs), then a partnership with an unhappy Libra can be a lonely place, indeed.

Paul Signac Femmes au puits 1892 {{PD}}

21 June we enter a period when passion overtakes hesitancy, reticence, and possibly common sense. We believe in ourselves, in our instincts, in our ambitions, and in our ability to love, and all this equips us extraordinarily well to go forward, as long as we are connected with our own instincts and harbor no hidden destructive tendencies or rage. Those are some important conditions at this time; lack of success springs directly from going forward without following instinctual prompts, or if we are in denial about an angry agenda that seeps in and poisons the well of our efforts. Thoughts and the mentality itself may go ‘round in a circle, as we could think compulsively about what we’d like to avoid. Remember, fixating on what we don’t want will have the opposite effect, drawing it straight to us. Our attention shifts at this time to what we nurture and care about, and physical energy is deployed most effectively in disciplined, contained, constructive efforts that have us coloring, at least most of the time, within the lines. (Perfecting today: Jupiter sextile Sedna, Mars conjunct Zeus, Venus sesquiquadrate Pluto, Mercury semi-square Black Moon Lilith, Sun into Cancer/ Earth into Capricorn)

Painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, depicting a scene from Kalevala, a Finnish epic poem. The warrior Lemminkainen had been killed, his body hacked to pieces and thrown into the dark river that flows through the underworld, Tuonela. His mother, having collected the parts from the river and sewing them back together, looks up to see a single bee bringing back honey from the halls of the god Ukko, a wondrous ointment that would bring her son to life. This suggests Lilith as a mother, the lengths and dark depths to which she would go for her child, and the projection of the (sacrilegious) idea of taking resurrection into her own hands.

Painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, depicting a scene from Kalevala, a Finnish epic poem. The warrior Lemminkainen had been killed, his body hacked to pieces and thrown into the dark river that flows through the Underworld. His mother, having collected the parts from the river and sewn them back together, looks up to see a single bee bringing back honey from the halls of the god Ukko, a wondrous ointment that would bring her son to life. This suggests Lilith as a mother, the lengths and dark depths to which she would go for her child, and the projection of the (sacrilegious) idea of taking resurrection into her own hands.

A Little on Lilith

Lilith is an attractor—it’s one of those qualities we almost hate to recognize in her, as it’s so much easier to call her a bad girl; we’re so much more comfortable dismissing her as a problem, rather than recognizing that there are things about her that draw us to her, things we might like to have or be ourselves. She is said to sleep with demons—but isn’t that what a patriarchy that had been defied would say about the one who defied it? It’s undeniable that her dark qualities have a hypnotic pull; she is the shadowy alley we enter, the deep beyond the cliff’s edge that tempts us to step over, the lightless closet into which we reach, because we want to know. That was said to be Eve’s sin, a desire to know; it’s also said that Lilith returned to the Garden of Eden as the serpent who famously offered the Apple of Knowledge to Eve, hesitant, I-came-from-the-rib-not-made-of-an-equal-portion-of-creation-‘dust’-as-was-his-first-wife. Lilith is something more: she’s the woman (or the anima in men) that knows who she is: an equal to anyone else, in that most important sense of the word, the one describing our equality at the level of our basic humanity—and by seeing herself as equal, she succeeds in claiming equal rights, she succeeds in claiming the right to know, and asks permission from no one to do so.

What is Lilith’s real power? In demanding equality she became a screen for projection of all that the social sphere deemed undesirable—and so Lilith may speak much more of the power others attribute to those things they think they are not; she is a catch-all for everything deemed ugly and wrong, everything termed degrading to the feminine ideal within a culture. But with high Self-esteem as her hallmark, the source of her compelling and attractive nature may lie within us: she is an attractor because she has declared herself free and equal in a way we all desire to be, as well.

7 June our empowerment options come instinctively—either we know what to do, or we just don’t. Those who routinely block the unconscious will feel lost. Relationships and/ or finances get in the way of making uninhibited choices or taking action freely, and we may find ourselves resenting what we otherwise really need and want in our lives—the other possibility is that we find ourselves uncomfortable or unhappy trying to accommodate someone we love, or the needs of our pocketbook. We are sure of our values and what we’re dedicated to, and this clears the mental arena and makes perceptions unusually sharp (barring the empowerment/ unconscious conundrum) (Perfecting today: Juno conjunct Sedna, Venus quincunx Mars, Sun trine Vesta and parallel Mercury)

Today’s image is an early summer garden already overrun with growth. Though some might see this as evidence of abundance, it can be overwhelming for a gardener–too much to do! This image corresponds to what a great many of us have been going through lately–too much happening in our lives to handle all at once. What we need to remind ourselves of is that all this new growth is good, that it offers us tremendous choice, that it will mature at its own rate, and that all we need to do is keep our eye on what we really care about.

8 June beauty may blossom in some ugly places, and amazing transformations may, for one day, become routine. Relationships or financial situations may alter in a heartbeat—but if one or the other does change, it won’t be something you weren’t able to anticipate if you are honest with yourself. In fact, that may be the theme today: honesty brings reward, even if that reward is only that one knows the truth, especially in terms of resources or with others. That’s actually good, as it’s clear the reality picture needs modification, especially as this applies to how and where what we’ve learned from our wounds, or our Chirotic skills, may be better employed. (Perfecting Today: Venus trine Pluto, Sun quincunx Saturn, Chiron square Sun-Earth axis)
