Moon in Scorpio

The transiting Moon in the Scorpion’s sign adds depth to the atmosphere, so that those who are comfortable with emotion and with the way things are, are most ‘at home’ in the world right now; everyone else, the thinkers and doers and those ready for change may feel they’re moving through mud (or is it quicksand?) Just something to keep in mind during Luna’s journey–and of course this is the sign that holds part of the ancient Via Combusta (‘The Burning Way’). The Moon sited between 15 Libra and 15 Scorpio (Tropical) was considered a malefic placement in Horary, and some Horary Astrologers still use this in delineation. The reputation for this area may derive from fixed stars found there in ancient times, or from the way the Sun and Moon do not flourish in signs associated with the traditional malefics Saturn –Libra–and Mars–Scorpio. You may ask, does this area hold negative implications for natal placements found there? The answer is, no.

Juno at the midpoint of Mercury-Zeus 14 October

Obscure, I know, but an interesting set of contacts, especially when we note that Juno is also sesquiquadrate Sedna. Mind games may be the order of the day, not with others, but with ourselves! There will be a scratching, scrabbling, underlying need to feel empowered that could permeate thinking and communications, and be driven by desires, ambitions, instincts, and those matters in our ‘blind spot’ (issues that we carry that are plain as day to everyone else, but of which we remain blithely unaware!) This means we may be very vulnerable today, and possibly not even know we are (this could last through the 18th)–and that suggests hypersensitivity springing from what we’re not conscious of, from what we have hidden even from ourselves (or most especially from ourselves, that everyone else sees). Communicate with care, and realize that what we want may be exerting a much stronger influence on how we deal with others than we are aware–and that true cooperation will flourish only when we have as much regard for others’ wants and needs as we have for our own.

On Asking Horary Questions

When we ask about some matter using astrology, we need to understand that astrology can lay out the possibilities, but can’t be anymore definite about the outcome than we are at the moment of asking. By that I mean, if we are examining several alternatives through a horary question for the feasibility of each potential choice, we can only expect some generalities to show themselves, an outline of potentials, rather than a full-color, detailed portrait of guaranteed outcomes. It’s the difference between saying, “I’m hungry; where shall we go eat?” and so considering several potential places, and saying “I’m hungry; I’ll go to Fred’s and have the Chili-Cheese Conquistador for one!” With the first we haven’t decided anything but that we have a need and will consider alternatives–we wouldn’t reasonably expect to know the quality of the meal or the service, and anything that might happen there, at this stage; with the second we recognize the need and commit ourselves in a particular direction, from which we can extrapolate what the experience may be like, indigestion and all–and so with astrology, the first approach will tell us a little something about the experience we can expect with each restaurant, while the second will be much more specific, telling us what to expect with that particular meal experience at that place at this time.

This is something I’ve encountered many times working with querents (those asking the question): there is an expectation that astrology will not just tell them what to do, but will promise the success of a particular choice or venture. There is a kind of passive attitude that says astrology will give a definitive answer that not only makes the choice for them, but that also guarantees everything will develop along what they consider optimal lines. It just doesn’t work like that.

First, astrology does not tell us what to do: it shows us the probable circumstances resulting from a choice–and second, it doesn’t necessarily comment on the results, unless the choice itself brings immediate results. We can’t sit in the back seat and say, “I’ll climb into the front and turn left at the next crossroads, but only if the car will then turn into a Maserati and I’m guaranteed to arrive safely at my destination with a magically appearing pile of money in the trunk!” In this case, the querent is looking for a promise that taking responsibility and making a choice will insure that things go perfectly–beyond perfectly, really, to a kind of magical reward outcome–but a question can only address the next step, and the ripples this might cause, with potential ripples to the step after that moving out in ever-widening circles, and so being impossible to determine at the current, first-step point.

One more example: we ask, “Will my house sell by June?”, in one instance having it already listed for sale, and asking the same before having listed it. How could it possibly sell by June, or at all, if you haven’t taken the step of first listing it? The assumption that we can leap over necessary steps to find the ultimate outcome is detrimental to the asking process in that one then approaches the entire matter with the idea that no energy will be expended in a direction unless that direction is guaranteed to pan out positively–and yet, consider how many times something that didn’t work out sent you in a different direction, and so sparked a later success.

That old saying about a journey beginning with a single step truly applies to asking questions in horary astrology. It’s the next step we see in the chart, and as with everything in life, there are just no guarantees about how it will all come out.

It’s all about communicating emotion for Moon in the 3rd. Pierre-Auguste Renoir – ‘Confidences’ {{PD}}

A little something on natal Moon in the 3rd, part of my new book on the Moon:

To Think They Feel, or Feel They Think, is the problem presented by both a 3rd House Moon and a Moon in Aquarius (and sometimes Moon in Gemini). The individual with Luna in the natal 3rd ‘hears’ the emotional content behind everything communicated, takes in the subtle current of what’s unspoken, and feels keenly every sentiment conveyed by others—and may do it all as a matter of course, without recognizing that emotion as communication isn’t the way everyone sends messages, or feels feelings. Too, they may not be aware that everyone doesn’t run the emotions through a language and symbol filter, just so they can get a handle on what they’re feeling—and so a person unable to express their emotions through language may be a unicorn the 3rd House Moon doesn’t believe exists, adding a degree of difficulty to relationships with, for example, Water or Fire types.

We can theorize that the childhood environment, also contained in the 3rd, sensitized the individual to all those unsaid things, emotional assumptions, and the uneven affections of family and friends to an excessive degree; this is the person who senses everyone’s feelings about everyone else—but that doesn’t necessarily mean their perceptions are accurate. For all their ability to discern emotional inclinations, the 3rd House Moon is not beyond placing her or his own filter over what’s perceived: their filter is the mind. This is natural for everyone, especially those with lots of Air, but may be especially relevant for this Lunar placement as, whether there’s an unspoken message or not, 3rd House Moon may perceive one. Since they believe all communications have these emotional undercurrents, it’s (nearly) impossible for them to see that sometimes, words convey only what they actually say, nothing more. They may have a hard time believing that others aren’t as emotionally engaged in communications as they are.

Want vs. Need in the Natal Chart

Birthdays do seem to be a time when we think about what we want and need. 'The Birthday Party' John Singer Sargent 1887 {{PD}}

Birthdays do seem to be a time when we think about what we want and need. ‘The Birthday Party’ John Singer Sargent 1887 {{PD}}A Re

This is a reprint from 2009; Bon Appétit!

It’s really important to distinguish between what we want and what we need; often, we see them as one and the same or, much worse, confuse the two, or just plain misunderstand, thinking that what we need is only a desire, and denying it to ourselves out of misplaced frugality. We all have both wants and needs, and they’re shown principally by the Moon (needs) and Venus (wants) in the natal chart.

Noting that Venus has been tagged as representing wants, you may protest with, ‘But don’t we all need love?’ And you’d be right, of course we all need love, it’s just that the love we need must be delivered in the form of the Moon–the love we talk about with Venus carries other baggage: lust, jealousy, envy, greed, carnality, and the trappings of romance and courtship–all are forms of ‘Venus love,’ and not truly love at all, but desire. Love that is pure and untouched by these concepts is Amor, while Venus love that is other-directed and objectified is Eros. It remains to the Moon to show us true need, and the form of love that will nurture, comfort, and fulfill emotionally.

Does this mean we shouldn’t call Venus the planet of Love anymore? No, it just means that when we speak of Venus as representing love, we must remain aware that the love Venus represents is that which is typically found in relationship, shown by its rulership of Libra (with the singular exception of the Moon as it carries the maternal love). Venus can also show something about love of the Self (as indicated by Taurus and natural rulership of the 2nd of Self-worth and assets/ talents)–and yet, again, this suggests an outward component to the love, as this focuses on our perceptions of ourselves via the physical, the abilities, and the possessions, including our relationship to the personal finances. Because we live in a material world (sorry, Madonna) there exists a material level at which we will inevitably assess ourselves–and so we take this into account when thinking of Venus, as well.

Neither the Moon nor Venus promises fulfillment of the spirit, though the functions of each can lead to this (the propensity largely indicated in the natal chart by a relationship of either to Neptune, Chiron, the Sun, and sometimes Jupiter). Spiritual love and ideals are the province of Neptune and the Sun (this latter as it represents the Soul itself), but again, these are not separate so much as facets of the concept of love we all carry.

So when we seek love, talk about love, speak of needing to find another to assuage our loneliness, to give our love to, in my estimation we really need to be looking, not at our Venus, but at our Moon, first. This idea was encapsulated in the pop psychology axiom, ‘You can’t love another until you love yourself,’ and indeed, if we have not found the emotional fulfillment demanded by our Moon, we are, in a psychic sense, unable to look away from our own needs, and thus unable to really see and commune with another.

What about desire? After all, we’re in a way programmed to go after what we desire and there’s nothing wrong with that, except that we go after our desires with the expectation that having them fulfilled will fulfill us, when our desires are more about possession than about completion. Our Moon needs, however, are about completion, in the sense that our psyches cannot function as a healthy whole without the sense of having been nurtured, and emotionally ‘filled up’–and we are back to the idea that we cannot give away what we don’t possess–in this case, the sense of completeness, comfort, and nurture that make up the essence of the love we think of sharing with another person.

Gainsborough – The Painters Daughters Chasing a Butterfly 1756 {{PD}}

4 AM PDT of the 2nd the Virgo Moon opposes Neptune. Either we are consumed with imaginative or creative expression, or we have a microscope trained on the details, procedures, and organization of our surroundings. Neither extreme is as productive as a viewpoint that takes that detailed focus and applies it to creating–try to land there. 6 AM PDT the Moon squares Juno. Being critical toward those in charge is useless, but sharing the right knowledge with them can gain you a lot of ground. 10 AM PDT the Moon trines Earth/ sextiles the Sun and squares Venus. We are grounded, so it’s just confusing when we run up against relationship conflict or financial negatives–we feel like it shouldn’t be happening. Trust what surrounds you, what you can hold in your hand, and let anything reported, insinuated, or threatened fall by the wayside. Likely as not those implied problems will never actually appear. 3 PM PDT the Moon trines Pluto. Emotional depth comes easily at this point; we can relate at a very intense level. The inclination might be to dig down where and with whomever we are at the moment, but caution is in order: just because we can get down to the bare bones doesn’t mean we should. 7 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Pallas. We are in touch through intuition and emotion with our inner wisdom–ask it what you need to know. 11 PM PDT the Moon quincunxes Uranus and sextiles Saturn. We’re seeking security by shaking things up–a contradictory stance if there ever was one. Consider that’s not the most logical way to get from A to B.

New Moon at 5 Cancer 37 on 27 June: Creativity and Its Pitfalls

The Cancer New Moon trines Neptune, and with some leniency for non-Ptolemaic aspects, we can count it as semi-sextile the Juno-Venus combo in Gemini. This makes for new beginnings that are strongly emotional and are relationship, values, information, or communion-oriented; it also may generate emotion-driven creativity, inspiration, and imagination that have an agenda of furthering communication and caring. What we musn’t overlook, though, is that relationships and empowerment issues (especially whose ‘rights’ are granted by whom) will play a bigger part than we expect; they will act as an undercurrent, and issues of status, control, and emotional ‘territory’ will loom large in expression of NM energies. One important thing we must note about Juno-Venus is the potential for co-opting others’ resources, energy, relationships, or even ideas (the Gemini placement), as well as the possibility of jealousy surrounding creative energy expression. It’s not pretty, but it’s a whole picture, one that can equip us to create and protect our creation—for certainly that’s part of the Cancer mandate, a facet of nurture and care—and surely we know by now that to reject the darkness is to invite it in, sit it in the best chair, and give it a muffin.

'The Sense of Sight' Philip Mercier c1746 {{PD}}

‘The Sense of Sight’ Philip Mercier c1746 {{PD}}

4 AM PDT of the 16th the Aquarius Moon opposes Black Moon Lilith. We may perceive a real distance between our innermost compulsions and temptations and our intellectual understanding of what it is that we need. The best approach to level ground between the two may be to translate those needs through the intuition–skip what you think and go with what you feel. 7:30 AM PDT the Moon trines Mars. Taking action or making choices is easy–the mind is clear on the direction we’d like to take, in spite of Merc’s retro status–or perhaps, because of that apparent backward motion, the mind gets out of its own way that much more easily. If we need cooperation from others, now’s the time to ask. 10:30 AM PDT the Moon trines Zeus. The emotional reactions support the ambitions and desires–without conflict within the feeling nature, we can pursue our wants at twice the usual speed and efficiency. Noon the Moon sextiles Uranus. Spontaneity that rises from our mood can bring surprising and enlightening experiences. 2 PM PDT the Moon trines Vesta, squares Saturn, and semi-sextiles Chiron. Something in the reality scenario gets in the way of us being able to honor those causes to which we’re dedicated, or to spend adequate time on the home front or with the mate–and this results in some hurt, our own or someone else’s. Find out if what you honor is impractical in real-world terms (and so doesn’t fit the reality scenario–if, in other words, what you’re pretending to honor is contradicted by the actual life you’ve built around you) or if the surroundings or commitments need to be modified to allow you to dedicate sufficient time and energy to those things that really matter. 5 PM PDT the Moon trines Ceres, offering us the cooperation or assistance of authorities or harmony between our own feelings and our expressions of power. 10 PM PDT the Moon squares Venus. Relationships may erupt in conflict as one or both parties rely on the intellect in matters that should rely on the heart.

Today’s image is a magnifying glass. Look closely; the details are very important right now.

Full Moon in Sagittarius at 9:11 PM PDT of the 12th at 22 Sag 05

The Full Moon forms the apex of a Finger of God with base of Jupiter-Sedna, with no other aspects falling within our strict three (at most!) degree orb. This promises a culmination of a matter related to the House in which this FM falls in the natal chart, an ending with a Sagittarian theme. The involved energies, Jupiter, Sedna, and the Moon, in themselves contradict one another: where Jupiter is about accumulated knowledge, Sedna and the Moon are about feeling, especially the kind of feeling that is pre-verbal, instinctive, and reactive; where Jupiter is about sharing and getting the word out, Sedna and the Moon are involved in the personal experience, and those experiences are of the kind that may never be shared with others; Jupiter represents the external and exotic, those things in the world we might visit or learn about, things that expand our Universe, while Sedna and the Moon represent internal qualities and a landscape only we can see and visit. Aligned as they are in a Finger, we can gather that a meeting of that external, Jupiterian, knowledge-based circumstance and the internal, instinct-guided, Sedna-type of knowledge and awareness (which are typically consciously hidden from us and make up our ‘blind spot’) will, if successfully achieved, result in an emotional ending or culmination. Keep in mind, though, that the Moon is also a principal indicator of the passage of time, so that this ending (Full Moon) may not actually have an emotional component, but may instead simply indicate a closing out of a particular period, and so represent the passage of time, or possibly a sense of satisfaction gained by successful utilization of both sides of the base energies.

2 AM PDT of the 29th the Gemini Moon sextiles Uranus and trines Zeus. Spontaneous discussion or thought on ambitions and desires is on the agenda. It’s a good time to network–you can get the support you need by showing your uniqueness–or if you’re on your own you’ll have good ideas and can ponder inventive moves to take you closer to your goals. 4 AM PDT the Moon trines Vesta. You are in harmony on the home front, with the mate, or with those causes to which you are dedicated. Use this flow to enhance the relationship. 6 AM PDT the Moon squares Chiron. We may shut down over hurt, or meet the challenge and pull Chirotic skills into the mix–your choice. 8 AM PDT the Moon trines Ceres and quincunxes Saturn. Who holds authority is up for discussion–and negotiations will necessitate some changes to the rules or boundaries currently in place. 11 AM PDT the Moon hits the midpoint of Juno-Jupiter. We see the emotional repercussions of serious power struggles–or we are emotionally caught in the middle of some sort of parental-feeling dispute. Ideas about who’s right may change with the wind–so stay neutral and out of it, if possible, and remember, it’s not really your fight. Unofficially, the Void begins at 11:45 AM PDT as it leaves the midpoint–officially it begins at 9:15 AM PDT as the Moon leaves quincunx with Saturn–but that’s only if you count the quincunx. Traditionalists begin the Void at 9:07 AM as the Moon leaves trine to Ceres–but that’s only if you use asteroids. If you want only strict Ptolemaic aspects and major bodies, we see the Void begin at 3 AM Pacific. The Moon enters Cancer at 7:14 AM PDT of the 30th. No matter where you start it, this is a very long Void. Generally, things go unexpectedly, and efforts begun at this time often as not come to nothing–so conserve your ammo, as they say, just for now.

Still Life with Peonies by Edouard Manet c1865 {{PD}}

Still Life with Peonies by Edouard Manet c1865 {{PD}}

5 AM PDT of the 20th the Capricorn Moon sextiles Neptune; we imagine what we could build, with a little discipline. A highly productive influence out-of-proportion to the mild aspect itself. 5 PM PDT the Moon conjuncts Pluto, opposes Jupiter, and squares Uranus. Adding the Moon to this potent Cardinal T means that we’ll likely read the Plutonian reactions (rage, anger, destruction, transformation, or renaissance) as practical (Cap) measures to deal with the T tensions. That may be an accurate perception, and it may not–what will really count is whether we can muster the emotional restraint long enough to determine whether that Plutonian urge makes sense in the context of the situation we’re facing. By 6 PM PDT the Moon picks up the final arm of the Grand Cross with a square to Mars. Now we are faced with choices or action pertaining to the emotional situation just before; checking with others (Libra) may keep us out of trouble and our options in perspective. 9 PM PDT the Moon squares Zeus and sextiles Chiron-Venus. It doesn’t feel like what’s practical actually serves ambition fulfillment, but the reality is that we’re too quick to see ourselves as vulnerable to losing what’s dear if we pursue goals. With emotional reactions arising out of past hurt, we take a conservative approach, and then wonder why nothing’s happening. A better way might be to make sure that what we pursue builds on what came before; a step-by-step effort may not be speedy, but will reassure us enough to move forward at a steady pace.

On Tax Time and the Moon’s Voids

Obviously, this get-together didn’t start during a Void–unless of course they thought it wouldn’t go well. ‘Merry Trio’ Judith Leyster c1630 {{PD}}

We’re coming up on tax time in the US, but these rules apply in any country at any time when paying anything where you could be audited and the tax man could come back for more. These suggestions apply equally to personal taxes and business taxes, and have proven very useful in the real world; for myself, in a business that invites scrutiny (astrology is actually illegal in some parts of the US) I’ve filed using these guidelines for at least eighteen years now, and I’ve never been audited or had the return questioned in any way. These suggestions are based on some I first saw in the work of March and McEvers—if you’re not familiar with them and their well-presented work, you might want to be; their series, ‘The Only Way to . . .’ offers an excellent grounding in a number of Astro-areas.

It seems it’s all in the moment you release the Return; whether dropping it in a mailbox or pushing ‘Send’ on the computer, that is the point at which you lose control of the numbers, and entrust them to Big Brother. So to that end, you choose a moment during the Moon’s Void of Course period, every two and one half days. This can get tricky, as sometimes the Void is only a few minutes in length; but it’s worth planning ahead for.

The idea is that the Moon symbolizes the forward (linear) movement from one event to the next that is the essence of daily life; it represents time, not in Saturn’s slow, trudging-forward, span-of-eons way, but in the way that nothing sits still, everything is changing perpetually, and the Moon captures that changing nature of life in its swift cycle of waxing and waning. When it’s in the Void, it has made the last major aspect it will make to another body while still in that sign; it leaves the Void when it enters the next sign. In that period between the final aspect and entering a new sign, the Moon is said to carry no energy behind it; events, then, lack that same impetus, trailing off into nothing, coming to nothing, or never getting off the ground in the first place. This is advantageous in paying the tax bill as it would typically be scrutinized for discrepancies and extra due; offering it in a Void period, though, removes the energy that would ‘cling’, in a psychic sense, to the Return, which should allow it to flow through the system without a hitch, with either payment or refund over in no time. Whenever you want to put something through a system and have it pass through with little problem and without drawing attention, then initiating the journey during the Moon’s Void is the right time.

Stay away from submitting something during a Void when you DO want it to draw attention. Don’t enter a contest, submit a paper or article, or apply for a job or for entrance to a college, or make that ‘first moment’ in the Void for anything else where you want to be seen and heard. No interviews, placing orders, or announcements, either. There is another condition that applies to the Void, the potential for things not to go as planned. This chiefly applies to gatherings or something actually started during the Void, and it plays off what we anticipate going forward; if we believe we can start the party and it will be just fine, a convivial evening of laughter and warmth, what we may get is a lot of no-shows, a couple of fistfights, or an evening where everyone stands in icy silence with a drink in their hand—unanticipated outcomes, certainly, all bringing the unexpected as whatever energies were flying around fell into the Void as this unfortunate party got started, filling it
